In Delhi's Satya Niketan, students residing in paying guest accommodations face severe civic and infrastructural challenges, including high rents, dilapidated buildings, overflowing sewage, single exits, and safety violations. Following the collapse of a five-decade-old building operating as the Hostel Days PG, students from Delhi University South Campus highlighted issues of poor quality food, contaminated drinking water causing illnesses like typhoid and jaundice, and unaddressed maintenance complaints. Students reported paying rents ranging from fifteen thousand to thirty thousand rupees, alongside mandatory security deposits that PG operators frequently refuse to return upon departure. Across localities like Satya Niketan and Anand Niketan, students from states including Rajasthan, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh endure unregulated housing conditions due to a lack of affordable alternatives. The incident underlines widespread concerns regarding safety compliance and basic living facilities across student housing hubs in the university area.

00:00Just about every lane in Satya Niketan has PG accommodations.
00:05Multiple buildings which have been built, maybe without permission, violating building laws.
00:13But what is evident here is that this is home for several students who come from outside Delhi to study
00:21in South Campus of Delhi University.
00:24I can see three students sitting here.
00:27Kahan se ho aap? From which state of India?
00:29Rajasthan, West Bengal. I'm from UP.
00:32So three different states and you are here. This is your PG?
00:37Okay. So did you get calls from your parents?
00:43Like temporarily you have to move out.
00:49Please leave.
00:50Okay. So what do you think?
00:53Now we are going to go, but what will happen later? In the long run what is the solution for
01:00it?
01:28I mean, we don't have any other option.
01:32We are going to go, but we are going to go, but the price starts from 30,000. It is
01:41not possible for everyone to pay 30,000 monthly just to study here.
01:4430,000 is of one bed actually.
01:47Actually, the second bed in the same room is of 30,000.
01:50So they are making so much money from one room only.
02:21Rent prices are very shocking here.
02:22And then again, there are no shops, but there are no facilities that are so close by or not.
02:27The area is not congested, but the buildings are too long.
02:30So there is no idea that there will be better you will get there.
02:34Because there is no idea that there will be better you will get there.
02:37PG's also lined up, lined up, lined up will get there.
02:39Although that is a residential area, you will get less than you will get there.
02:43But it is the same way, there is no other option to live there.
02:47And when you leave and you want to move out to that area,
02:52there will also be rents and rents, you will get high.
02:56Because now it feels like there is no other option to live.
03:00So now we are going to rent high.
03:02Then we are going to rent high.
03:03So that is true, children has no option.
03:06Where are you going to rent to live now.
03:09Because you are third-year.
03:10So you are third-year students.
03:11Are you трourados students in two years?
03:13Or are you going to turn to the PG the U Tour students in two years?
03:15I actually have changed.
03:16I have changed.
03:17I have to go to 3 years in 3 different PG.
03:19My third-year budget, I am in third-year.
03:21So this year again I have to go back.
03:22I have to go back to that.
03:23I am just hoping to go back and get better.
03:24But then, everyone is going to go back to the same conditions of your country.
03:43When you complain to your manager, nobody is there to listen?
03:48They don't do anything. They don't do anything. They'll listen to the other.
03:55It is very normal for them.
03:56The children complain and get tired. The water is so bad.
04:00The people who live here are at least typhoid.
04:03Within the first week of your living, I got typhoid myself in the first week of my first year of
04:08college
04:08and I got typhoid from the food and the water.
04:11And you have no solution for it.
04:13Because our people here are the same. The food is the same.
04:15And who do you complain to?
04:16You have no one. If I'm facing any kind of problem, they won't return my security.
04:20And who do I complain to at last? I need my money back at least.
04:23They do that. They threaten you.
04:24That they will not return the security money.
04:26And what is the security money like?
04:28It's like equal to your monthly payment.
04:30One month? Yeah.
04:31So if I'm paying 15,000 rent,
04:35I'm going to take PG now.
04:37And if I give 15,000 rent,
04:38then I have to pay 15,000 security deposit.
04:41So I have to pay 30,000 for a month.
04:43And then they say,
04:45if you stay for a month,
04:46there's a contract for 12 months, 10 months.
04:49If you stay for a month,
04:50and then you leave after the contract,
04:52then you have to pay your security money.
04:54They do not return it.
04:55If you do anything,
04:56you don't do anything.
04:57They don't do anything.
04:57In any way, they do it.
05:01The PG facility known as Hostel Days,
05:05which came crashing down on Sunday
05:07in the lanes of Satya Nikitan,
05:09charged a premium from middle class students.
05:12But what it could not provide
05:14was the most basic promise.
05:16Safety.
05:20Nearly 50 students were packed into the ageing,
05:24five decade old structure,
05:26operating as an unregulated boys PG.
05:29And that such buildings continue to house
05:31dozens of young students in the university belt,
05:35unchecked and unregulated.
05:37Points to a rot far deeper than one collapsed building.
05:42prettyاف the same constructs from overrun. But that's
05:42all, the cuttinglege
05:42to spread the significance to the person is certain pieces.
05:42crazy. People to fire up
05:42suo society to be able to Do these by words
05:42like you're about to
