A building collapse in south Delhi's student hub Satya Niketan has resulted in the loss of seven lives, prompting widespread concern over hostel safety and civic accountability. Students studying at Delhi University colleges, who come from various parts of the country, are vacating their paying guest accommodations and returning home or moving to relatives' residences due to safety worries. The incident has raised questions regarding building bylaw violations, structural audits, and administrative inspections in congested student localities. Although the Delhi Chief Minister stated that action has been initiated, questions persist regarding delayed enforcement and whether the tragedy could have been prevented. Outstation students residing in multi-storey accommodation units with several rooms per floor describe an atmosphere of concern following the incident. While many students are temporarily leaving the area to escape unsafe conditions, concerns remain about the recurring issues of substandard living conditions, lack of regulatory oversight, and missing accountability when they return to continue their academic education.

00:00Seven lives lost and Delhi is searching for answers, accountability.
00:07The living condition of hostels in Satya Niketan is pathetic.
00:12It's deeply concerning and above all, it gives you a sense
00:16that how difficult it is being a student in South Delhi campus.
00:22Because most of these students come from small towns of India.
00:25They come to Delhi to fulfill their dreams of studying in Delhi University.
00:30But because of the limited option of hostels, what they are seeing is,
00:35just look at this, parents taking their daughters back home.
00:40This is the story of Satya Niketan today.
00:43Earlier today I spoke to several such students to get you a sense of maze
00:48of hostels that is there in and around this area.
00:52And why does it take a tragedy for questions to be raised around inspection,
00:58open violation of the bylaws and also accountability and action.
01:04The Delhi Chief Minister says action has been taken.
01:08But what appears certainly is a belated and a delayed action.
01:13Could those lives have been saved is the larger question.
01:22A phrase parents often repeat when their children say they want to leave home
01:28to chase their dreams in the colleges of the national capital.
01:35But the struggle does not end at all.
01:38It begins the moment they arrive here.
01:43Searching for a roof over their heads,
01:46trawling through cramped lanes and crowded neighbourhoods.
01:53Looking for one thing, a safe place to live.
01:58And when they finally find one,
02:01they pay thousands every month for that safety.
02:05But is it really safe?
02:09The collapse of a PG in the heart of the student hub
02:13has raised a chilling question.
02:15What is the cost of chasing an education dream?
02:20And more such sight is now visible in Satya Niketan,
02:24which continues to be the hub of students.
02:28Now most of these students are leaving this,
02:30they are vacating their PGs and heading home,
02:33though temporarily.
02:34Varsha?
02:35Yes, ma'am.
02:36Q?
02:38Ma'am, it's no more safe.
02:41If it was a home, far away from a home,
02:44but still,
02:46how do we know how to sleep tomorrow night?
02:48You know, we haven't come to sleep.
02:50After watching, we have to see it all.
02:51You know, the inspection of the government
02:53is a lot of different things.
02:56So where are you going to be?
02:59I am from UP, Haryana.
03:02And now you will be moving out temporarily?
03:05What options do you have?
03:07We are going to be 20 hours.
03:07We are going to be 20 hours.
03:08We are not going to be safe here.
03:10So we are going to be going to be safe here now.
03:11And what is it that we can't leave PGs?
03:14We can't leave PGs because there is an agreement for 11 months.
03:16We will not give any security fees.
03:18Where are you going to be?
03:20Are you going to be taking bags?
03:21We are going to be going to our relatives' home.
03:24I will leave my home to Lakhnau.
03:26Move to Lakhnau.
03:27For how long?
03:28Till when is Venkatesh shut?
03:31Or other campuses, till when are they shut?
03:33Are you going to be safe here?
04:03What did your parents tell you?
04:06My parents said he said go and check them.
04:09Because I am alone and nobody is here alone.
04:14We were in New говоряism.
04:15How do we sleep?
04:16No.
04:18I am not sleeping.
04:19I didn't see it.
04:20I saw the terrace so many times,
04:22I saw the side and I saw it.
04:24I was like, I was like...
04:30We are hardly 300 meters away from the collapse site.
04:34And we have someone who is standing with a bag
04:37and her cab has already come.
04:39You live in one of the PG's here?
04:40Yes, yes.
04:41What happened? What do you know?
04:43And how much do you pay?
04:45And where were you yesterday when the collapse happened?
04:47I was here only since it was Sunday yesterday,
04:49so most of us were in our PG.
04:52I was not aware during the collapse
04:53because I stayed a little far away from the building.
04:55I got to know from my friends
04:57because they were constantly calling me
04:58to ensure whether I'm safe or not.
05:00So, later I got to know about the collapse and everything.
05:03So, by the time I got to know,
05:04the teams were already there,
05:06police officers were already there,
05:07they were evacuating,
05:08they were trying their best to bring the students out of it.
05:11And then, since then,
05:13the atmosphere of this area has become a little damp
05:16and a little saddening also.
05:17So, my parents are also worried,
05:19so they have asked me to move to my uncle's place
05:21for my own safety.
05:22Concerned? Worried?
05:24A little concerned.
05:25When do you come back?
05:26Let's see.
05:27I am not sure now.
05:29You're not sure?
05:30Yeah.
05:31You might just move out of this PG.
05:33How many...
05:34In your PG, there are how many apartments
05:36or how many rooms
05:38which are out on rent?
05:39Four floors and...
05:41In each floor we have two to three...
05:43Four to five rooms.
05:47They're leaving now.
05:49Going back home.
05:51Away from these buildings.
05:53Away from the fear.
05:59But many of them will have to return.
06:02They will have to come back to the same city.
06:05Same cramped lanes and a maze of buildings
06:09where audits, inspections and accountability
06:13can often remain missing.
