Changemaker for Diplomatic Reporting, Climate Communication, and Multilateral Affairs (Canada)

Stéphanie Fillion is an award-winning Canadian journalist and editor whose career has been defined by a commitment to making complex international affairs understandable, accountable and accessible to the public. Working at the intersection of journalism, diplomacy, multilateralism and public policy, she has developed a distinctive role within the international media landscape: bringing audiences closer to the institutions, negotiations and geopolitical decisions that shape the world, while maintaining the independence and scrutiny expected of serious journalism.

As Editor-in-Chief of Envoy Magazine, a quarterly diplomatic affairs publication based inside United Nations Headquarters in New York, Stéphanie operates at the centre of one of the world's most consequential diplomatic environments. Her professional experience includes nearly a decade within the UN press corps, where she has covered the Security Council, the selection of the Secretary-General, international conflicts, climate diplomacy and the complex negotiations that take place largely outside public view.

Her journalism has appeared in internationally recognised outlets including Forbes, Foreign Policy, BBC News and CNN, building on an earlier career in Canadian broadcast journalism with Radio-Canada and CBC. Reporting in English, French and Italian, she brings a genuinely international perspective to journalism at a time when geopolitical developments increasingly transcend national boundaries.

Journalism at the Centre of Global Decision-Making

International diplomacy can often appear distant from everyday life. Behind formal statements, diplomatic ceremonies and institutional announcements are negotiations involving peace and security, climate change, international development, human rights, economic interests and the future of multilateral cooperation.

Stéphanie's work helps bridge that distance.

Through her reporting, she examines not simply what governments and international institutions announce, but the political and diplomatic dynamics behind those decisions. Her coverage of the United Nations Security Council has placed her close to some of the most consequential debates concerning international peace and security.

00:00Hello everyone!
00:01My name is Stéphanie Fillon and I am Editor-in-Chief of Envoy Magazine, an independent nonprofit
00:08outlet that covers the UN and geopolitics.
00:11First of all, I want to deeply thank the Icons of Change Award for the recognition and also
00:18congratulate all the others honorees tonight.
00:22It's truly an amazing list.
00:24I first set foot inside the United Nations a little more than 10 years ago.
00:28I was a young-ish reporter who was full of dreams and I was fascinated by this mysterious
00:36building that sits on the East River of New York City.
00:39What I quickly discovered was that, yes, the United Nations is a fascinating place to cover,
00:45but also that it was in dire need of high-quality accountability reporting.
00:52Over the past 10 years, I found out that a lot of mainstream media were disengaging with
00:59the institution.
01:00Not because they didn't want to, but because covering the United Nations is truly expensive
01:05and the business of journalism is changing.
01:08And that's what Envoy set out to do.
01:11Envoy has an amazing group of talented, experienced, award-winning reporters who are covering the
01:19United Nations on a daily basis.
01:21We want to produce high-quality accountability reporting that makes the United Nations accessible
01:28to all.
01:29So that's why I truly want to share this recognition with the whole Envoy team and also the whole
01:36team of United Nations correspondents across the globe.
01:40I truly believe that freedom of the press is deeply important and that high-quality journalism
01:47is something that is worth investing in.
01:50Thank you so much everyone and have a good night.
