Icons of Change International Awards 2025 EJ Elena Shin Head of Climate and Sustainability Solutions, Aviva Investors Former Vice President, EMEA Fixed Income Sustainable Investing Lead, Global Fixed Income, BlackRock Former Vice President, Portfolio Manager & Global ESG Research Lead, Multi-Asset Strategies and Solutions, BlackRock Graduate, Harvard University Masters Certificate (on campus), Sustainability Studies Sustainable Development Goal 13 – Climate Action Changemaker for Climate Finance and Regenerative Capital (United Kingdom) --- For EJ Elena Shin, finance has never been just about numbers on a balance sheet. To her, capital is a regenerative force—a lever that, when deployed with integrity, can simultaneously generate strong returns and build resilience for communities, ecosystems, and future generations. At the intersection of institutional finance, sustainability, and systems thinking, EJ has spent more than a decade proving that performance and impact are not opposing forces but mutually reinforcing drivers of transformation. Her career spans leadership roles at two of the world’s largest investment institutions—BlackRock and Aviva Investors—where she guided trillions in assets under management toward sustainable, climate-aligned strategies. At BlackRock, where she served as one of the founding architects of ESG and sustainability strategy, EJ helped integrate climate risk into global asset valuation models, frameworks that are now standard practice in institutional capital allocation. She worked closely with sovereign wealth funds, insurers, endowments, pension funds, and family offices to align trillions in AUM with the energy transition and long-term resilience. Later, as Head of Climate Solutions at Aviva Investors, she scaled decarbonization and net-zero investment strategies across both public and private markets. Her portfolio of work included developing climate risk assessment tools, engaging regulators and NGOs, and designing methodologies to stress-test portfolios against physical and transition risks. Her leadership helped position Aviva as a vanguard in global climate finance. But EJ’s perspective extends well beyond technical frameworks. Shaped by a cross-cultural upbringing in South Korea, North America, and Europe—and by early proximity to diplomacy through her father, a South Korean Vice Minister of Unification and architect of the Sunshine Policy—she brings a rare global fluency to her work. Raised among UN diplomats and global policy leaders, EJ internalized the unspoken codes of negotiation, discretion, and cross-cultural dialogue. Add to that field experiences across 60+ countries—from Wall Street boardrooms to multilateral forums at the Vatican—and EJ carries a uniquely holistic worldview into every boardroom and strategy session. Her academic path reflects this dual focus on rigor and vision. A graduate of NYU Stern School of Business, she combined finance with politics and international relations.
