00:30Hello, everybody. And then there were eight.
00:3416 of the very best countdowners over the last five years
00:38in our champion of champions already cut in half.
00:41And even in over 40 years of countdown history,
00:45today is really special because in this quarterfinal,
00:49the couple, the married couple, Florence and Sam,
00:52taking each other on.
00:53I mean, they are now going to be a famous TV couple.
00:56So let's get ourselves in the mood
00:59because they'll be on this list somewhere.
01:00See how many you can get.
01:01You know, I love a quiz and everyone can play along at home.
01:04So I'll give you the couple.
01:05You tell me the TV show.
01:07Easy one to start.
01:08Your favourite.
01:09Ross and Rachel.
01:10Friends.
01:11OK.
01:12Now, this one I know you know.
01:14Right.
01:14Because we love this programme, but it's not obvious.
01:17Phil and Vivian.
01:20Phil and Vivian.
01:21Vivian.
01:21Vivian.
01:22What's Vivian in?
01:23Vivian.
01:23Let's just say it was their nephew was the star of this show.
01:28You're going to kick yourself.
01:29I'm going to kick myself.
01:31Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
01:32Oh, Uncle Phil.
01:34Finally, you won't get this because of the age gap.
01:38Right.
01:38But I think this is the best couple ever.
01:40Two huge stars, but in a TV show.
01:42There's the clue.
01:43David and Maddie.
01:46Don't know.
01:46Bruce Willis, Sybil Shepard, Moonlighting.
01:50Oh.
01:50Yeah.
01:51There we go.
01:52Sam and Florence are on that level.
01:54Sam and Florence.
01:54Fame can destroy relationships.
01:56I'm telling you.
01:58We'll see how it goes.
01:59We've got another couple over in Dixonry Corner.
02:02The brilliant G of the D, Susie Dent, who has blisters on her fingers.
02:06They might know words we've had to check and recheck.
02:09And you've had all the help you need from the immensely talented and brilliant Heather Small.
02:16Let's do this.
02:17Florence and Sam, I'm not going to introduce you separately.
02:20That would be daft.
02:21Let's just have a chat.
02:22So, Florence, you were after Sam in terms of appearing on Countdown.
02:28So, did he get you in the Countdown?
02:30Did Countdown bring you together?
02:32I need dish.
02:33No, we met a long time before we had any interest in Countdown.
02:37Sam went on first.
02:38I made a passing comment about the fact there weren't many women on the show.
02:41And he said, well, you're a woman.
02:43Why don't you go on?
02:44You'll be good.
02:45And he applied without my knowledge.
02:48Well, listen, it's too close to call, you know.
02:50There's only a point between you in the last 16.
02:54Have you got any side bets on this with the three kids?
02:57Another one on the way?
02:58Like doing the dishes for a month?
03:00Something like that.
03:01And if not, why not?
03:02No, I'll blame any defeat on the fact that I've got a baby kicking me in the ribs.
03:07Or you could say that's one and a half against one.
03:09So, you could look at it the other way.
03:11Sleight advantage.
03:12All right, listen, best of luck to both of you.
03:13Such a special occasion.
03:15Let's make it a family affair.
03:16It's Florence and Sam.
03:20And, of course, Florence gets to go first.
03:22The better half.
03:22Off you go.
03:23Hi, Rachel.
03:24Hi, Florence.
03:25Can I have a consonant, please?
03:26You can indeed.

04:27Florence.
04:28A seven.
04:30Yes, and Sam. Seven as well.
04:31Yeah, Florence. Arising.
04:33Arising and Sam. I'll go for raising.
04:36Raising and arising.
04:38Perfect first date. Seven points each.
04:40Straight to the dictionary corner.
04:41I'm guessing that's as good as it gets.
04:43Yes, that's as good as we got.
04:45Good start. Good start all round.
04:48Decent letters as well. Sam, keep it rolling.
04:50We'll get nine more. Hello again, Rachel.
04:52Hi, Sam. Can I have a consonant, please?
04:53You can indeed. T.
04:55And another one.
04:57L. A consonant.
04:59L. One more.
05:02N. A vowel.
05:05A. Another vowel.
05:08E. A vowel.
05:11A. One more vowel.
05:14I.
05:17And a vowel, please.
05:21Lastly, another A.
05:23In 30 seconds.
05:25,
05:51The End
05:55Need a number, Sam?
05:56Seven.
05:57And Florence?
05:58I'll try a seven.
05:58OK, Sam, what have you got?
06:00Talina.
06:01Talina and Florence.
06:03Allatine?
06:04Talina and Allatine.
06:06Talina, you sounded confident, and you're right.
06:08It is from Zoology, and it's a bivalve mollusk.
06:11So that's very good.
06:13And Florence always, sorry?
06:14Allatine.
06:14A-L-A-T-I-N-E.
06:17It's not there.
06:18Palatine, obviously, but not Allatine.
06:20Sorry about that.
06:21Sam takes the lead, 14 to 7, 10 points up for grabs.
06:24Now, Florence, you're choosing the first numbers round
06:27of today's special show.
06:28Please, can I have four large, Rachel?
06:30You can, indeed.
06:31Take no prisoners, Florence.
06:32Four large, two little.
06:34And the little ones, six and six.
06:38And a large, 25.50, 75 and 100.
06:43And the target, there are 350.
06:47350 numbers up.
07:19So it works out sometimes.
07:20350, Florence?
07:22Yeah.
07:23Yeah, Sam.
07:24Yeah, 350.
07:24I almost want to ask you to do it together, you know, but I won't.
07:27Florence?
07:28I did 75 times six, minus 100.
07:30450, 350.
07:32I didn't even need to use the sixes.
07:34175 and then 50 over 25 is two, and times them together.
07:38Two 175s, yep, same result.
07:40There you go.
07:41You're not getting a round of applause for that.
07:42Ten points each as we head their first tea-time teaser in this very special champion of champions
07:48quarterfinal.
07:49It is goon free.
07:50Goon free.
07:52The quartet have left.
07:53It's a conclusion.
07:54The quartet have left.
07:55It's a conclusion.
08:12Welcome back.
08:13Very quickly.
08:14Goon free becomes foregone.
08:15The quartet have left.
08:17It's a conclusion.
08:19Right, let's get on with it then, Sam.
08:20We'll get more letters.
08:21Can I have a consonant, please?
08:23Thank you, Sam.
08:24K.
08:25Another one.
08:27R.
08:28One more.
08:29D.
08:30A consonant.
08:32T.
08:33A vowel.
08:35U.
08:36Another vowel.
08:37A.
08:38And a vowel.
08:39O.
08:42A consonant.
08:43Z.
08:44And another consonant, please.
08:46And an R.
08:49Thanks, Rich.
09:21Absolute filth, those letters.
09:22Sam?
09:23I've got six.
09:24Yeah, and Florence?
09:25I've got five.
09:25The five is?
09:26Razor.
09:27Razor, for sure.
09:28And Sam?
09:29Dotaku.
09:30Yes, it is in, as if there's any ever doubt, an archaeological term.
09:36Dotaku are bronze bell-shaped objects decorated with geometric designs or stylised scenes from
09:42life.
09:43So you will find them in rituals used in Japan around 300 BC.
09:49Good.
09:49You need to find a word like that to get a six.
09:51Were there any others?
09:52Dictionary corner, Heather?
09:53No, I had razor.
09:55Yeah.
09:56I had kraut, as in sauerkraut.
09:58Sorry to hear about that.
09:59Nobody wants kraut.
10:0130 plays 17.
10:03We'll stick with the letters for the time being.
10:05And Florence, a chance to peg back a few points as you're choosing them.
10:09Consonant, please, Rachel.
10:10Thank you, Florence.
10:11G.
10:11And a vowel.
10:13E.
10:14A consonant.
10:15N.
10:16A vowel.
10:18U.
10:19A consonant.
10:20S.
10:21A vowel.
10:23O.
10:24A consonant.
10:25R.
10:27Another consonant, please.
10:30B.
10:31And a final consonant.
10:34A final D.
10:36Here we go.
10:37Here we go.
10:38Here we go.
11:07It's time up, Florence.
11:08Eight.
11:09And Sam?
11:10Eight as well.
11:10And eight.
11:10OK, what have you got?
11:12Rebounds.
11:13Rebounds in Sam?
11:14I'll flip it round and go for Bounders.
11:15Bounders, OK.
11:17So let me rebound over to Dictionary corner.
11:19Well, that's as straightforward as it's been, actually.
11:21So both those words in.
11:24Great to get an eight out of that.
11:25No nines?
11:26We didn't get a nine.
11:27We had Burgeons, Flourishes.
11:29Beautiful.
11:30But, yeah, I think those were our lot, too.
11:33You missed one eight.
11:34It would only count in Northern Irish countdown, the way we say it.
11:36But songbird with a U.
11:37So if you're watching in Northern Ireland, you can have those eight points.
11:41We will allow it.
11:42Right, let's get back to the numbers, and Sam, you're picking.
11:44Can I have three large and three small, please?
11:46You can, indeed.
11:47Three large, three little in this super grudge match.
11:51And the three small ones.
11:52Nine, six, four.
11:55And the biggies.
11:5650, 75, 100.
11:58Come on, let's get a challenge.
12:00920.
12:01920.
12:03Numbers up.
12:05920.
12:061020.
12:071020.
12:071.
12:221020.
12:271020.
12:33that's time nine two zero sam uh nine one nine not written down okay one away florence uh nine
12:40two one sam uh nine times a hundred is nine hundred nine hundred uh 75 minus 50 is 25 add
12:47it
12:47on and then subtract six nine one nine one below very good one the other way then florence i
12:53subtracted four instead of six yeah all right no need to go there at nine two zero rachel riley
13:00um with this one you could say 100 less four 96 times it by nine for 864 and add on
13:09the six and
13:10add on the 50 920 very good right great start isn't it 45 plays 32 as we once again get
13:21to
13:21chat with heather small which is always a delight now you've been on tv a lot recently um and at
13:27the
13:27moment in the midst of something very special where so many young people get the chance to be on the
13:32type of stages that you've appeared on so tell me about it yes i'm currently on tour with young
13:38voices and it's uh young um people from very young age maybe to about 15 or so that um go
13:47around the
13:48country singing so young choirs from schools get to sing in mighty stages with some of the best
13:54musicians there's a orchestra and they raise funds as well they raise money and it's for another
14:00children's charity which is place to be which is a charity that deals with mental health issues for
14:06young people so they get on stage and it builds confidence it's so joyful and you just you get up
14:14there
14:14and you do what you love to do and for those young people to experience that on the highest level
14:19to be part of that i just i just love it and not everyone will go on to be a
14:24professional singer
14:25but there's something about getting in front of an audience that builds your confidence
14:29and also the camaraderie you know it's a memory for life so for me to be part of that and
14:35those young
14:36people's memories it's an honor it also goes so much deeper doesn't it because we all have a voice
14:42you know in my case terrible but it brings together people from all over the uk so therefore you know
14:50different ways to grow up different backgrounds different lifestyles different classes different
14:55colors different religions everything so it brings people maybe out of areas that don't have that
15:00that's right brings them together about unification and i think that's what music does as well as sport
15:05you know it's a leveler and when those children come it's just about singing you know it's not about
15:12the clothes that you wear or anything you get props for being there and singing your heart out
15:17absolutely well listen for any young people sitting watching with their parents with their older brother
15:21or sister with their grandparents if you've got a voice and you know it's there use it because look
15:26what happened with heather small she played glastonbury to a hundred thousand people and so much more
15:32heather heather thank you absolutely love it right salma florence that was good to sit and
15:38listen to but now you take centre stage again and florence it's your letters can i have a consonant
15:43please rachel thank you florence s a vowel e a consonant r a vowel a a consonant c a vowel
15:56e a consonant g
16:00another consonant s and a final consonant please final another g hands down
16:12so
16:28so
16:44That's time, Florence.
16:45Seven.
16:45Yes, and some...
16:46Seven as well.
16:47Seven's all the way.
16:48Florence.
16:49Creases.

16:50Yeah, creases as well.
16:52Creases and creases.
16:53There you go.

16:55One at each end.
16:56Perfect.
16:56There you go.
16:57Over the dictionary corner,
16:58or maybe a little bit of light here.
17:00You might want to get something.
17:02Greases.
17:03Oh, greases.
17:04Nice.
17:04And there's also sagas,
17:05and a saga in pottery is a protective fireclay box,
17:09and legend has it there as a job,
17:11which is the saga maker bottom knocker.
17:13Oh, yes.
17:13I love it.
17:15Worth coming to the dictionary corner.
17:17That's great.

18:10Bye.

18:15Bye.
18:18That's time. Sam?
18:20I'll try an eight.
18:21OK, and Florence? An eight.
18:23OK, the eight is? Wartiest.
18:25Yes, and Florence? A word I know you'll hate.
18:27Yes. I hated wartier when we had it the other day.
18:31Yeah. Wartiest has to be there, then.
18:33It is. Yeah. It is. Yeah. Good eight, though.
18:36I won't ask you for a longer word, Heather.
18:37Anything just better than wartiest?
18:40Anything just to soothe my mind?
18:42Unfortunately, I am not the balm that you seek.
18:46I will move on.
18:51Numbers again. Florence, there's just 13 points in this,
18:54so it's right on the knife edge.
18:56Let's see if the numbers move the dial at all. Let's go.
18:58I'll take six more ones, please.
19:00Six more this time.
19:02I know I wouldn't have to twist your arm to gamble.
19:04Taking your destiny into your own hands, that's what I like.
19:07The little ones.
19:08Nine, four, eight, five, three, two.
19:13And the target to reach.
19:15Oh, I'm so sorry.

20:00Florence. Multiply two, three, four and five.
20:03One way. Yeah. I did three, five and eight.
20:05Apparently there are 214 different ways to get this one.
20:09There you go.
20:10Let's have them.
20:11And we'll be here all day.
20:13We'll see how many we can do during the break.
20:14Right. I know it's such a special day
20:17because we have an actual married couple playing each other,
20:19but at stake, a semi-final berth in the Champion of Champions.
20:24Down to business when we come back really close.
20:26Here's your tea time teaser.
20:28Rap Tango. Rap Tango.
20:30It's a colourful character when going to court.
20:33It's a colourful character when going to court.
20:52Welcome back.
20:53Rap Tango becomes Trigopan.
20:55Brilliant.
20:56If you manage to get that at home,
20:57I think we need an explanation, Susie Dent.
20:59Yes, it is an Asian pheasant
21:02and the male is really brightly coloured during courtship.
21:06Right, OK.
21:07Let's get back to the only male, female that matters right here
21:10and that's Florence and Sam.
21:12And it is Sam with the letters.
21:14Can I have a consonant, please?
21:16Thank you, Sam.
21:17B.

22:23Yes, come on, Heather, that's what we wanted.
22:24I don't even care what you two have to say.
22:26What have you got?
22:27It doesn't apply here.
22:28Dumbest.
22:29Dumbest.
22:30There you go.
22:30Finally a word I understand.

23:41A consonant.
23:42How many Florence and eight and some seven the seven is our peace I
23:49Confident in the eight. Let's find out hat plights. Okay, gosh
23:53It is in there. Yes, they're actually without the H a pli te s
23:58But it's with the H as well in geology igneous rocks with homogenous final medium grained texture. Yeah
24:04On a roll
24:07Anything else the Dixstreet corner Heather we have spittle spittle
24:11Yeah, very nice not very teeth. Not as nice a word. There you go
24:15So there you go the seesaw battle Florence now has a two-point lead, but of course we're still in
24:20the crucial
24:22Countdown conundrum territory, so let's take a a little break and head to Dixonry corner because Susie yesterday you were
24:29talking about working out the origins of
24:32Town city village names. Yes, these two are from Rochdale. So I'll just let you know that
24:37Okay, well
24:38You know just talk a little bit about the sort of the different periods when it comes to place names
24:42and the different influences and
24:43Going to start with the Celts
24:46They lived in Britain before the Roman conquest and it's interesting
24:49They didn't actually leave a huge linguistic mark on our vocabulary, but their place names do survive
24:55So the various Avon's around the country Avon and Afon in Welsh as well meant river
25:03So you will find those dotted around the Tamar and the Thames they both go back to the Celtic for
25:09dark
25:10Because they were dark sort of mysterious rivers if you like and pen in a place named like penge or
25:16Penrith
25:17Pendleton
25:18usually comes from the Celtic for a hill or a headland
25:23Cornwall
25:23Was seen by the Romans as almost part of Wales. It was the headland of the foreigners because for them
25:31Welsh itself goes back to and the idea of a foreigners or sort of barbarians over there if you like
25:37Um, so that's another one and then coom
25:39Comes from a Celtic word meaning valley and you'll find that dotted around the southwest in Ilfra coom
25:47Sulcom as well castle coom
25:50Crocom lots of different places there and onto the Romans
25:54Many new settlements and many of us will be familiar with the place names there
25:58And usually gave them the new names like Londonian, but sometimes they actually combined existing places
26:06They combined Latin and the Celtic that they found so
26:08Lincoln goes back to the Celtic lindo for pool and then the Latin colonia meaning colony
26:15So it was the colony by the pool and then we
26:20Adopted from Latin
26:22Castrum to
26:24Basically denote places that had Roman military links and you will find that in Chester which was a descendant of
26:30that
26:30Castor
26:32Ancester as in Gloucester and so you've got Chester Bistus
26:35Ironcester Colchester, Manchester, Winchester, etc. You'll find all of those preserved there
26:41So again, just a little bit decoding can help you unlock
26:44Quite a lot of these well open secrets. I think behind our place names and tomorrow. I'll come on to
26:50the anglo-saxons
26:50Yeah, brilliant
26:51APPLAUSE
26:54Okay, back to the game. We cannot divorce Florence and Sam no matter how hard we try
26:58The married couple just two points between them with four rounds left. It's exactly the way we wanted it to
27:04be
27:04Sam, you're picking these letters

28:12Yeah, one of those rounds isn't it?
28:15It was very easy to see early on
28:16So I think there would have been a whole arsenal of weapons out there and countdown land anything else you
28:21two want to add
28:22Or are we all are we all done?
28:24Sevens
28:26Also evasion, okay good really interesting stage of the show. So let's just get on with it Florence

29:18MUSIC PLAYS
29:3430 seconds is up, Florence.
29:37Six.
29:38Sam.
29:39Six.
29:40Florence.
29:41Gotten.
29:42And Sam.
29:43Gentoo.
29:44Gentoo, fantastic.
29:45There you go.
29:46Yeah, look at this smile here.
29:48I'm a penguin fanatic, thank you.
29:49But they both just count as six.
29:52It's as black and white as that.
29:54Yeah.
29:54Right?
29:54It's as seven for us, too.
29:55As good as it could be.
29:56So I find this really interesting tactically.
29:59Florence has got a two-point lead.
30:02So is Sam going to be mischievous here
30:04and just try and mess it up
30:05and get a slight lead going into the countdown conundrum
30:08or just bank what he has
30:09and take it all the way to that crucial moment.
30:11Your six numbers.
30:12I can't wait to hear what comes out of your mouth next.
30:14We actually agreed before we came down here
30:17that we were going to pick everything except one large.
30:19So that leaves too large for this numbers game.
30:21No boring one large.
30:23So too large.
30:25Conservative choice.
30:27Right.
30:27The last numbers of this contest.
30:29Six, eight, ten, one, fifty and seventy-five.
30:35And the target, 895.
30:38Eight, nine, five last numbers.
30:41Six, eight, ten, one, fifty and seventy-five.
31:11Eight, nine, five the target.
31:13Sam?
31:13Yes, eight, nine, five.
31:15You got it.
31:16Florence?
31:16Yeah, so did I.
31:17Eight, nine, five.
31:18Sam, let's have it from you, please.
31:19Ten plus eight is eighteen.
31:21Eighteen.
31:22Times fifty for nine hundred.
31:24Yeah.
31:25And six minus one is five.
31:27And take that away.
31:28And another 29 seconds spare.
31:31There you go.
31:31And Florence?
31:33Exactly the same one.
31:37Well, we've arrived at the moment we all wanted to be at.
31:41Florence has 95.
31:42Her husband, Sam, has 93.
31:46So that means it will come down to a crucial countdown conundrum.
31:50In 2015, they said to have and to hold.
31:54They said for richer or for poorer.
31:56They said they'll death do us part.
31:58But for better or worse, we're going to separate them now.
32:02Let's reveal today's crucial countdown conundrum.
32:35And time's up.
32:36Florence takes it.
32:42That was 30 seconds of the worst stress just watching it.
32:46Can't imagine what it was like for you two.
32:49Just quickly, because everyone at home will be screaming it if they have it.
32:53And it's going to be another really difficult one.
32:55Dictionary corner?
32:55No.
32:56Rachel?
32:56Tell us, Colin.
32:57No, I've got to stop asking for this.
32:59Brilliant.
33:00Really testing.
33:00Let's have a look at what the answer was to today's countdown conundrum.
33:04Oh, I don't know.
33:05Ah.
33:06There you go.
33:07Just cleared up for us.
33:08Beautiful.
33:08It's what cats' eyes do in the dark.
33:10They sort of sparkle in the night time.
33:12Gorgeous.
33:13Wonderful.
33:13That was absolutely epic.
33:15The floor is yours.
33:16What's your thoughts after that, Sam?
33:18Well, I'm just so glad we got to play each other.
33:20We've been looking forward to this ever since we realised it could happen.
33:23Yeah.
33:23And two points in it means not that much bragging rights, is there really years going on?
33:29It was close enough.
33:30Florence?
33:31Well, listen, I know that it's just been the perfect atmosphere in the studio today, but
33:36still, come on.
33:37Yeah.
33:38We want to go all the way now.
33:39Yeah.
33:39I feel like the pressure's on to hold up the family name.
33:42There you go.
33:43You thought it couldn't get any better this week, Heather?
33:45It was wonderful.
33:46Wonderful.
33:46You know, for me, it's when their children look back and see their parents on TV playing
33:51each other, I think that'd just be a wonderful thing, yes.
33:54Like you said, she's got to go on now.
33:55Keep up the family name.
33:56Yeah.
33:57Yeah.
33:57Absolutely.
33:58Well, listen, 20 years down the line, Countdown will still be here.
34:00The unborn one will be an octo-champing.
34:02In this family.
34:03That's probably.
34:04I love it.
34:05I love it.
34:05There you go.
34:06I've enjoyed watching the body language today.
34:08Whenever Sam got something, he looked abashed.
34:10Check Florence was okay.
34:11Yeah.
34:11Whenever Florence beat him, not even a class.
34:14It was never in doubt, just like it's not in doubt in this studio.
34:21Rachel, Susie and I will be back tomorrow with another champion of champions quarterfinals.
