00:26And Canada promises to hit back, dollar for dollar.
00:33The stories that matter, clear and credible, from across the country to around the world.
00:39These are your Unbiased Updates from Straight Arrow.
00:45Good morning, I'm Craig DiGrelli.
00:46Today is the day Treasury Secretary Scott Bessett is set to unveil new sanctions against Iran, part of the economic
00:54D-Day President Trump has promised.
00:56Bessett is set to hold a news conference today to detail what he says will be a massive new financial
01:02offensive against Tehran.
01:04Writing in the Financial Times, Bessett calls it the single greatest financial offensive ever marshaled against an adversary.
01:11He says the goal is to cut off every economic lifeline supporting Iran's government.
01:17And he's warning countries that continue doing business with Tehran that they could face consequences of their own.
01:24Iran is already warning countries not to take part.
01:27The head of Iran's top security body says any country that joins the U.S. economic campaign will be considered
01:33an enemy and has threatened to harm their interests.
01:36Iran's president, though, is still defending the memorandum of understanding signed with Washington in June as the best path to
01:44ending the war,
01:46even though its 60-day deadline has expired and both sides have previously declared the deal dead.
01:52Meanwhile, Iran and Oman are set to continue talks Tuesday over the future of the Strait of Hormuz.
01:58The two sides have been negotiating for weeks over how ships could move through the critical waterway, including possible fees
02:05and designated shipping routes.
02:07For the first time in more than two months, the U.S. military has carried out a strike on a
02:13boat it says was trafficking drugs.
02:16U.S. Southern Command said early this morning that two people were killed in Sunday's strike in the Pacific Ocean.
02:22South Com says the vessel was operating along established narco-trafficking routes in the eastern Pacific.
02:29The strike resumes a military campaign that the administration had paused for more than two months.
02:35Operation Southern Spear has destroyed at least 66 vessels and killed more than 200 people since it began last year,
02:43part of the Trump administration's campaign against suspected drug traffickers in the Caribbean and Pacific.
02:49In a statement, South Com Commander General Francis Donovan called the latest strike
02:54a powerful demonstration of our lethal precision, overwhelming capability and absolute resolve to protect the U.S.
03:03Thousands of people are waking up away from their homes this morning
03:07as a massive uncontained wildfire burns dangerously close to Reno, Nevada.
03:12The Hawk Fire has already forced tens of thousands to evacuate
03:16and this morning crews are bracing for another day of dangerous conditions.
03:21These pictures show just how intense the fire has become.
03:24The Hawk Fire exploded to more than 15,000 acres after starting on Saturday
03:29and as of Sunday evening, crews had no containment.
03:33Officials say the fire was human-caused, though exactly how it started remains under investigation.
03:39Hundreds of firefighters are now battling it from the ground and the air.
03:42And look at this, a driver captured the flames racing across the hillside, dangerously close to homes.
03:50At times, the inferno was moving so fast, officials say it actually jumped over fire trucks.
03:56Look at that, it just lit up something.
03:59Lit up a tree extremely close to these houses.
04:04It is ridiculous right now.
04:07It is very close and it is widespread.
04:10Fire officials have ordered some 42,000 people out, with another 45,000 in evacuation warning zones.
04:18At least six people have been hurt, including three first responders.
04:22Two hospitals have evacuated patients and the National Guard is now helping with the response.
04:28Heading into Monday, the big concern is the wind.
04:31Shifting stronger winds have already made this fire extremely unpredictable
04:35and could make the fight even tougher today.
04:38The Canadian dollar is taking a hit this morning as the trade war between the United States and Canada escalates.
04:46The loony fell about half a percent against the U.S. dollar
04:49and also lost ground against several other major currencies.
04:53The drop comes after new 50 percent U.S. tariffs took effect Saturday
04:58on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, including dairy, wine and wood products.
05:03Canada is now promising to retaliate dollar for dollar with new tariffs starting September 8th.
05:10And the deal fell apart fast.
05:12Just days earlier, President Trump said the two sides, quote,
05:15have a deal and gave negotiators three extra days to finish it.
05:19By Friday night, the talks had collapsed.
05:21Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called the final U.S. terms uneconomic and unfair,
05:26saying the Americans wanted to restrict Canada's ability to make trade deals with other countries.
05:33U.S. Trade Representative Jameson Greer blamed Canada for the breakdown,
05:37saying Ottawa added new demands and backed away from earlier commitments.
05:41New tariffs are expected to face a core challenge,
05:44while businesses on both sides of the border warn
05:47the escalating fight could drive up costs and disrupt supply chains.
05:52Politics now, the 2026 midterms are still more than two months away.
05:57But in South Carolina this past weekend, 2028 already looked very much underway.
06:03Pete Buttigieg returning to the state as he weighs another run for president,
06:07and he's already drawing some fire from a potential Democratic rival.
06:12Buttigieg spent the weekend making the rounds, including the NAACP dinner in Orangeburg,
06:18with a particular focus on black voters, who helped end his 2020 presidential campaign
06:23after he won just 3% of the vote in South Carolina.
06:27Their support could matter even more next time around.
06:31South Carolina is now set to hold the Democrats' first presidential primary in 2028.
06:37Most Americans, and even in a conservative state like South Carolina,
06:41most voters disagree with the Republican agenda to cut taxes for the wealthy,
06:45disagree with the Republican tariffs, disagree with the Republican war in Iran,
06:49disagree with the Republican cuts to Medicaid and to SNAP,
06:52and agree with us on doing more for health care, more for education, more to bring prices down.
06:57But Buttigieg isn't even out of the state, and the 2028 jabs are already starting.
07:03A spokesperson for California Governor Gavin Newsom, himself a possible 2028 contender,
07:09mocking Buttigieg's absence from South Carolina, posting on X,
07:14first time in SC in three years? Nice.
07:17And they're hardly alone.
07:18Newsom, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, Congressman Ro Khanna, and Senator Cory Booker
07:24have already made their own trips to South Carolina as the potential Democratic field starts taking shape.
07:30Republicans are already working the state, too.
07:33President Trump was in South Carolina Friday campaigning for Darlene Graham ahead of the midterms.
07:39I watched another commentator say the Republican Party is only 70 percent.
07:45Let me tell you, the Republican Party, I think, the real Republican Party is 100 percent.
07:50Make America great.
07:52So while the next election is still 2026, the maneuvering for 2028 is clearly underway.
07:59Finally this morning, IndyCars, high speeds, and sharp turns right in the heart of Washington, D.C.
08:06The Freedom 250 Grand Prix took over the streets of the nation's capital Sunday.
08:11The streets around the National Mall were packed with fans as IndyCars went buzzing past the U.S. Capitol
08:17on a 1.7-mile course.
08:19The course also wound past the National Archives and Smithsonian with military flyovers overhead.
08:25The race was part of the Trump administration's celebration of America's 250th birthday.
08:31Before the race, President Trump took a lap around the course in the presidential motorcade.
08:36He then waved the green flag to start the race.
08:3925 cars took the green flag, and after a few fender benders along the way,
08:4427-year-old Kyle Kirkwood of Florida took the checkered flag and won the Freedom 250.
