President Donald Trump says the Strait of Hormuz may become less important as new energy routes emerge across the Middle East.

Speaking to reporters at the White House on September 4, Trump pointed to new pipelines and overland transportation routes that could allow oil to move without passing through the strategic waterway.

Trump said, “A lot of alternatives are being made to the Hormuz Strait. The Hormuz Strait is not what it used to be.”

He also highlighted an overland route through Syria, saying trucks are already using it to transport crude.

Trump warned Iran that continued reliance on the strait could become less significant, saying, “Iran is going to end up, if they don't get smart, really smart, with a Hormuz Strait that's not very necessary anymore.”

His remarks come as governments and energy companies look for alternative ways to transport and export oil amid continuing tensions with Iran and concerns surrounding the vital shipping route.
