00:01After a 19-year-old son disappeared while attempting to cross the Atlantic to Europe,
00:06a miniature boy turned her grief into a mission to help other families facing the same loss.
00:12In Imbrose Tafis neighborhood, where many families have lost their relatives to irregular migration,
00:18boy helped search for missing migrants and support their relatives.
00:24That's how I drew on my own experience.
00:27To understand research methods and track down those who had taken the boat,
00:33I got in touch with the Red Cross so they could help me with the investigations.
00:39In this way, I managed to find many boats that had disappeared and I informed the families of the victims.
00:46Eventually, all the families began coming to me, bringing photos of their children
00:50so that I could start looking for them in collaboration with the Red Cross who helped me support the families.
00:57Aminata founded the collective of victims of irregular migration in Senegal in 2020.
01:03The group now supports more than a hundred women while working with organizations,
01:08including the Red Cross, to trace missing migrants.
01:14Young people don't go to sea to kill themselves nor to jeopardize their future.
01:20They want to earn a living and support their families.
01:23The truth is that many young people have taken the small boats and managed to build houses
01:28and they are doing a lot for their communities.
01:32I don't judge them.
01:33It's the state I blame because they must open the borders and allow young people freedom of movement.
01:39Traveling freely is a right.
01:45For families like Ndoye, Aminata has become a lifeline after the disappearance of her daughter.
02:00There was a time when I was completely lost, but now I'm doing much better because I've started opening up
02:06to other people again.
02:07And all of that is thanks to Aminata.
02:11It is thanks to Aminata that I'm still here talking to you because I'd almost lost my mind.
02:17A son is a victim of emigration, but she puts herself aside and started helping others and the other parents
02:25of victims.
02:33Aminata says government must do more to give young people opportunities at home and allow safer legal routes to travel.
