South Africa seeks reimbursement from African countries for migrant repatriations

00:09The request comes after South Africa were deported or helped repatriate more than 80,000 immigrants following protests and violence
00:18against illegal immigration.
00:20According to the country's Home Affairs Department, which briefed lawmakers on Tuesday, the country has spent nearly $80 million accommodating
00:29and transporting immigrants who demanded to return to their home countries.
00:34The foreign ministry has sent written requests for compensation to Malawi, Ethiopia and Nigeria, officials said.
00:42The money-covered buses to transport the immigrants, temporary repatriation centers and staff overtime, among other expenses.
00:52Most recently, Ghana pushed for the situation in South Africa to be included in the agenda of an upcoming African
00:59Union meeting, a suggestion which was rejected by the Continental body.
