00:10On Wednesday, the Venezuelan government has threatened its production alliances with different
00:16national and international companies to boost its hydrocarbons, energy and gas sectors as
00:21part of the state's efforts to improve the national economy.
00:26During his speech at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Russian Foreign Minister
00:32Sergey Lavrov denounced the West's systematic attempts to undermine the unity of Russia and
00:39halt the consolidation of a multipolar world order.
00:44Pyfun Sao Del struck the eastern province of Wuhan in eastern China on Thursday with sustained
00:49winds of 23 meters per second near its center after previously hitting the coast of Siyan.
01:01Hello and welcome to From the South.
01:03I am Lorena Fon, from the Telesurio Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
01:06We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:20The Venezuelan government threatens its energy ties following the signing of agreements with
01:25U.S. and Italian companies and in the oil and electricity sectors.
01:28More details in the following report.
01:34Venezuela's acting president, Delcy Rodriguez, led the signing ceremony with the Italian company
01:40INI and the U.S. companies Chevron and General Electric, accompanied by officials from Washington
01:46and Rome.
01:52This is a historic day because of the combination of disagreements and what they entail, agreements
01:57to develop untapped oil fields.
02:00We've been saying for decades that Venezuela wasn't developing untapped oil fields, and
02:04we are doing so in partnership with Allies, Chevron, a U.S. company that has been in Venezuela
02:09for over a century, ENI, an Italian company that has been in Venezuela for over three decades,
02:17and in collaboration with major international companies.
02:26Claudio Descalzi, Executive Director of ENI, emphasized that these agreements are the result
02:32of months of intense work and dialogue between the parties, united by the goal of building
02:37a solid partnership focused on increasing the production of the South American nation's
02:42resources.
02:46This ceremony marks a milestone in the beginning of a new historic phase of growth and a new
02:50sense of confidence in Venezuela's energy future.
02:57These agreements are the result of months of intense work, dialogue, and cooperation among
03:02the parties involved, who share a common goal, that is, a solid partnership focused on creating
03:06long-term value and rapid growth in the production of Venezuela's magnificent resources.
03:21In addition, U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright emphasized that the agreement signed today
03:27with Chevron, ENI, and General Electric will represent tens of trillions of dollars in direct investments
03:33for Venezuela.
03:35The dealings that were signed earlier today, particularly three with very large multinational
03:44corporations of Chevron, ENI, and General Electric will represent tens of billions of dollars
03:52of investment into the Venezuelan economy. That's direct investment, but the spillover impacts will be enormous.
04:06In this regard, Caracas reaffirmed that it has always been willing to cooperate, noting that
04:14agreements with other nations around the world were interrupted by the coercive measures imposed
04:19by the United States on the Venezuelan economy.
04:25On Wednesday, in Caracas, the governments of Venezuela and Suriname consolidated a new phase of brotherhood
04:31and geopolitical complementarity following a strategic summit aimed at strengthening trade and food
04:36sovereignty for both nations. The bilateral meeting, led by Venezuela's Minister of Agriculture,
04:41Vladimir Padrino López, reformed the commitment of Caracas and Paramaribo to wield a development
04:47block based on continental solidarity. We have much to do together in the spirit of solidarity,
04:53trade, and complementary. Let's move forward together, emphasized the Bolivarian Minister
04:58noting that the geographical proximity between the two countries represents a fundamental advantage
05:04for shielding their economies from external pressures and consolidating sovereign projects
05:09of mutual benefit. The work agenda prioritized the implementation of practical mechanisms to boost
05:14key sectors such as agriculture and foreign trade, raising the level of regional integration.
05:26Brazil's Senate Committee on Constitution and Justice has approved a proposed constitutional amendment
05:31that will end the six-day-on, one-day-off work schedule. The initiative, which now moves to the
05:37plenary session, would reduce the maximum weekly workload from 44 to 40 hours, said an eight-hour daily limit,
05:44and establish two paid days of rest per week. Of the 27 lawmakers present for the vote, only four aligned
05:51with former President Jair Bolsonaro voted against it, underscoring the broad support for a measure
05:57that President Lula da Silva's administration is pushing as a cornerstone of the labor policy.
06:03The text will be debated over five sessions in the Senate plenary, where its final outcome will be decided
06:09amid high expectations from unions and social movements that view the reform as a historic step forward
06:15for Brazil's working class.
06:22The Brazilian Congress passed a law on Wednesday to promote the extraction of critical minerals.
06:28The law aims to promote the exploration of critical minerals and rare earth elements
06:32throughout tax incentives of up to approximately $980 million for those who invest in the field over a five-year
06:40period.
06:41In addition, it calls for the creation of a government council that will regulate the sector
06:46and have better powers over changes in corporate control at mining companies, as well as the establishment
06:52of a mandatory registry for projects. The National Mining Agency must prioritize the use of concession processes
06:59for areas with potential for the production of this type of natural resources.
07:09And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at Tell
07:13us in English.
07:14There you will find news in different formats, news updates and much more.
07:18We'll be right back. Stay with us.
07:31Welcome back to From the South.
07:33A federal judge in the United States has blocked President Donald Trump's latest attempt to restrict birthright citizenship,
07:39ruling that the executive order targeting so-called birth tourism is almost certainly unconstitutional.
07:46Judge Deborah Boardman cited June the ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court, which upheld protections for children born in
07:53the United States.
07:54Trump signed the new executive order in August, seeking to deny automatic citizenship to children whose mother traveled to the
08:01country,
08:02specifically to give birth, among other provisions.
08:05In a 35-page decision, Boardman said the Supreme Court had already determined that children born in the United States
08:12are citizens at birth,
08:13adding that the president must follow the law.
08:16A ruling prevents the Trump administration from enforcing the order against children born to one or two undocumented parents after
08:24February 19, 2025.
08:30On Wednesday, United States Southern Command confirmed that in a joint operation with Ecuadorian authorities,
08:36they intercepted a vessel attributed to the criminal organization known as Los Llaneros.
08:41The operation comes amid serious allegations by Ecuadorian fishermen regarding the legality of the Pentagon's operations in national waters.
08:50While the fishermen question these actions, the Ecuadorian government supports cooperation with the United States in operations in the Pacific.
08:57According to Southern Command, the intercepted vessel was being used as a resupply point to support drug trafficking operations
09:04and is believed to be linked to Los Llaneros.
09:08During the operation, United States military personnel boarded and seized the vessel.
09:13Its occupants were handed over to Ecuadorian authorities and the vessel was subsequently sinked, according to Washington.
09:25The headlined approach implemented by Ecuador's President Daniel Novo has not worked.
09:31A figure he himself revealed proves the experts, analysts and human rights activists write.
09:37They warned him from the start that his approach would fail.
09:40There are currently more than 80,000 members in organized crime groups.
09:44The head of state himself revealed this figure recently during his appearance on a national radio program.
09:50Official records indicate that in 2024 there were 50,000 members of these criminal organizations.
09:57Today, following the implementation of all the Novo administration's plans, the number has reached 80,000,
10:03which means that since the president declared a state of armed conflict, 15,000 people have joined organized crime each
10:10year.
10:10The figure is so alarming that even experts who have opposed the government's programs
10:16suspect it may be manipulated data intended to provide arguments justifying a military escalation in the name of public safety.
10:24What it is certain is that the homicide rate in the country since President Novo has signed the decree
10:29has never declined despite the millions in resources managed by the executive branch.
10:50The Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel inspected the South Basin water supply system, which supplies drinking water to over 30
10:57% of Havana's population.
10:59During the tour, state authorities presented a comprehensive strategy combining infrastructure maintenance and energy stabilization
11:07to address ongoing water supply disruptions in the capital.
11:10The Cuban head of state emphasized that the pumping instability is largely driven by power grid fluctuations
11:16linked to the impacts of the U.S. blockade on fuel and equipment imports to restore service.
11:22The executive plan integrates backup generators, pump recovery, and long-term renewable energy projects,
11:28establishing an operational model intended for gradual expansion across all provinces.
11:43Amid the dynamics of escalating sanctions and the blockade, everything can change over time,
11:49because we are subject to many variables regarding how the United States government's aggressive policy is handled,
11:55which undoubtedly affect this situation.
11:57But I believe there is a vision, an understanding, and a will, an approach suitable for the moment,
12:03that can help us find solutions to the problems.
12:10Nicaragua's co-president Daniel Ortega welcomed the progress made on constitutional reform
12:14to protect the democratic system from foreign threats.
12:17At a ceremony marking the 47th anniversary of the National Army, the co-president recalled national historical events
12:25and moments when Nicaraguan heroes and martyrs stood up to foreign aggression to defend the country's sovereignty.
12:31Ortega stated that the recent constitutional amendment to protect national democracy from foreign interference
12:37was necessary because the constitution contained provisions that facilitated aggression against the Nicaraguan people.
12:43He emphasized that the amendment which must be revisited in the next legislature to definitely take effect
12:50puts Nicaragua's sovereignty first,
12:52reforming the Sandinista government's commitment to protecting the country's independence and stability
12:57in the face of external and internal threats.
13:03This is a reform that, logically, prioritizes Nicaragua's sovereignty,
13:15which is what we must protect above all else.
13:19And in this regard, the Nicaraguan army played a decisive role.
13:29Nicaragua's co-president Daniel Ortega stated that the country has succeeded in defeating the aggressions launched,
13:34which is sought to destroy the freedom and democracy of the Nicaraguan people.
13:38We have succeeded in defeating the attacks,
13:49the attacks,
13:53one time and again,
13:58that had been launched against our homeland,
14:06seeking to destroy the independence,
14:08self-determination,
14:10freedom,
14:12and democracy
14:13of the Nicaraguan people.

14:47Russian President Vladimir Putin opened the 11th plenary session of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok on Thursday,
14:53where he praised investments by foreign partners and investors across the country.
14:58In this regard, President Putin also noted that the Asia-Pacific region is a growth hub that sets the pace
15:04for the development of the entire global economy.
15:07The Eastern Economic Forum is being held September 1-4 in Vladivostok.
15:12This iconic economic event brings together government officials, business leaders, and experts from Russia and abroad.
15:20This year's theme is the Far East Development for the benefit of the people,
15:24with more than 70 sessions covering topics such as investment, international cooperation, technology, logistics, and infrastructure.
15:37On Thursday, during his speech at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok,
15:42Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced it was a systematic attempt to undermine the unity of Russia.
15:48The head of Russian diplomacy was unambiguous in stating that the exploitation of the wealth and advantage of the largest
15:56and richest continent on earth has long been hindered by Western policy.
16:00During his speech, Lavrov asserted that Western aggressions have escalated, becoming even more ferocious.
16:06For months now, the Russian Foreign Ministry has been denouncing the West's desperate attempts to maintain position
16:12it has already lost on the global stage and blames its leaders for creating a global crisis of confidence
16:18throughout which it attempts to maintain its dominance throughout the colonial methods.
16:37Typhoon Saudel struck the eastern province of Wuhan in eastern China on Thursday,
16:41with sustained winds of 23 km per second near its center after previously hitting the coast of Xi'an.
16:48The hydro-methodological event forced local authorities to activate extreme civil protection protocols
16:55and raise their response levels in the face of widespread flooding.
16:59As a preventive measure in the face of persistent torrential rains that began to sweep throughout the region,
17:05provincial governments proceeded with the safe evacuation of more than 83,000 residents.
17:10Local media reports confirmed the temporary suspension of work, commercial, and school activities
17:15in vulnerable areas of the city of Shangshu, where accumulated rainfall and strong winds
17:20put the urban infrastructure and flood control systems to the test.
17:30Three powerful storms are crossing the Pacific Ocean, with experts pointing to unusually warm waters
17:35linked to a historic El Nino event as a key factor behind their development.
17:40Hurricane Lowell straightened to Category 5, the highest level on the hurricane scale, as it moves westward.
17:46It was followed by Category 4 Hurricane Carina.
17:49Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Marie intensified into a hurricane Wednesday night,
17:54according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.
17:57Marie was located about 600 km southwest of the southern tip of Baja California,
18:02with maximum sustained winds of around 130 km per hour.
18:06The National Hurricane Center said hurricanes Lowell and Carina are expected to pass well away from the Hawaiian islands.
18:14El Nino is a climate pattern that warms large areas of the Pacific Ocean,
18:18and warmer ocean waters can provide more energy and moisture to the developing tropical system, helping storms threaten.
18:31Precisely regarding El Nino, the United Nations Climate Agency warned of its potential devastating impact on communities and economies,
18:38issuing a call to action to save lives and protect livelihoods.
18:43This El Nino will deliver a major blow to communities, economies and supply chains across the globe.
18:52So many sectors will be affected. Agriculture, trade, fisheries, health, energy, transport, water resources, disaster management, to name but a
19:05few.
19:06We are already seeing disruption and devastation from droughts and floods and extreme weather.
19:13We expect these impacts to multiply and cascade as El Nino intensifies.
19:18We have the forecast, the foresight to save lives and protect livelihoods.
19:24Today, we are issuing a call to action.
19:28The science is clear.
19:30We have the knowledge and tools to prevent El Nino-related hazards becoming a crisis.
19:36Let us join together and ensure that we leave nobody behind.
19:47Moving on to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Ebola outbreak has killed more than 3,000 people, according
19:53to the latest government data,
19:54as the virus continues to spread at an unprecedented rate.
19:57The Health Ministry reports more than 6,100 confirmed cases and 3,007 deaths since the outbreak was declared a
20:05global health emergency in mid-May.
20:07The virus has now reached six provinces with two additional health zones affected last week in North Kibu,
20:13where the fatality rate is particularly high.
20:16Health workers are facing difficult conditions and have repeatedly gone on strike over unpaid wages.
20:21Conflict, attacks on medical staff, population movement and weak health infrastructure are making containment more difficult.
20:29The World Health Organization warns the outbreak could surpass the deadliest Ebola epidemic on record,
20:34which struck West Africa between 2014 and 2016, which killed 11,000 people.
20:45The Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is already the second largest on record
20:53and the fastest moving that we have ever seen.
20:59Yesterday, the epidemic passed 6,000 reported cases, and today it reached 3,000 deaths.
21:08The WHO is working with partners to progress all these three vaccines to efficacy trials in DRC starting in October
21:19or November.
21:22And like this, we have come to the end of This Things Brief.
