Mattel DC Core Series 2 Superman Figure Review

00:21Sure, he's the man of steel, but is he going to be flying off the shelves?
00:24Here's a look at the brand new Mattel DC Core Wave 2 Superman.
00:33Well, at least the last son of Krypton isn't last in this line.
00:37Before we get a closer look at Wave 2's Superman, let's take the tape measure and see how tall the
00:41figure is going to stand.
00:43Technically, we've already been teased by the Man of Steel because we've, of course, got the larger scale Core-sized
00:48figure,
00:49which, again, I still don't think they need to call it Core.
00:51Core really should, I feel, denote the idea that the figures are going to be this size,
00:55not the much taller figures because it's going to be a habit trying to order those things online.
01:00Again, for how tall Superman's going to stand, my tape measure seems stuck right now.
01:03He seems to clock in about six and a half, maybe six and a quarter inches in height,
01:08working out to be a figure that's 16 centimeters tall.
01:11Not too bad.
01:11Two waves in and already four members of the League.
01:14Wave 1 consisted of League member Batman, League member Flash.
01:18Wave 2 has Superman and Green Lantern member Jon Stewart.
01:21I wonder if Wave 3 will finally get a female figure announcement, and maybe we'll get Amazonian's Wonder Woman.
01:27We don't have yet any ideas of what a Core female figure looks like, although if we look to maybe
01:32the Master of the Universe movie tie-in toys,
01:35there was technically a Core release Tila, so I wonder if maybe they're going to be using a similar style
01:39of body for the release of her.
01:41We did technically also, again, get a version of Superman.
01:44I'm just going to show you guys what the face looks like.
01:45It seems like it is the same face as the smaller Core Superman, but again, I don't think that really
01:50Mattel should be marketing the larger scale figures as Core, too.
01:53That's going to confuse a whole lot of people.
01:56Elderly Granny is going to be trying her best to buy Billy a birthday present online, only looking at Core
02:01Superman and thinking that that's the right size of the figure that he needs,
02:05realizing, not realizing that she's going to be ordering a much larger Superman when the smaller Superman would be the
02:10better one for his collection.
02:12Speaking of Superman in the collection, I mean, certainly we can also compare a couple right now.
02:16To the left of the Core, Superman happens to be the one from McFarlane Toys.
02:20The one to the right, though, is a little bit older of a Supes.
02:23This was released by also Mattel from the DC Universe days.
02:26From this doomed planet apparently stowed away in a ship is a paper pamphlet.
02:30Does the pamphlet give us an escape plan?
02:32No.
02:33What it does show you, though, is that Superman comes in clear with armor and how to attach it onto
02:37his body.
02:37I'm going to do my best to do that.
02:39As of right now, though, the armor is attached right now to his sprue.
02:43The armor actually does have a front and back armor piece.
02:46It does also have a metal girder rail, and he also comes with a chain as well.
02:51These side pieces kind of look like they should be mouth guards, but they actually will attach onto the side
02:56of the armor.
02:57I guess we could really do that right now.
02:59We're going to remove the steel girder here, for example.
03:02We'll just put that off to the side.
03:03We'll also take off the chain.
03:04Superman always seems, especially like the older toys, always tend to come with either a chain or something that Superman
03:09would be squeezing.
03:11Working construction yards, I would think that a lot of the workers there would be like,
03:14Come on, Superman.
03:14We need those materials.
03:15That's going to cost us extra money.
03:18Superman doesn't seem to care.
03:19Well, I guess Superman does care.
03:20He just, every once in a while, though, he needs to show how strong he is by destroying materials.
03:25That's going to come out of somebody's pocket.
03:28Let's also remove the chain.
03:29We could put that off to the side.
03:31We'll take off the armor here as well.
03:32Well, there's a few extra little pieces, fragments of plastic.
03:36We can take those off as well.
03:38Take these.
03:39I wonder, though.
03:40I'm looking at these.
03:41Would they have maybe worked better had they been green?
03:44They could have been kryptonite.
03:45Well, I guess maybe Superman doesn't really want to have kryptonite armor.
03:47That defeats the whole purpose of him being protected by it.
03:51Taking off his shoulders.
03:52Oh, we took that piece off instead.
03:55We'll put that off to the side.
03:56Take this off.
03:58These shoulders seem like they're almost going to be the most things, struggling things to
04:02get off.
04:03Let's just take.
04:04There we go.
04:05We'll clip that off on one side.
04:07Okay, that worked a little bit better.
04:09Get in there.
04:10Clip it carefully.
04:12What we don't want to do is we don't want to clip off those little.
04:15And of course, I've got all this extra plastic residue.
04:18Do we really even care?
04:20Do you care that much to watch this guy try to remove the extra bit of plastic?
04:24I would hope that some of you at least care that much.
04:27This, by the way, does attach.
04:28I think it attaches onto the end like that.
04:31There we go.
04:33So at least some of it could be salvageable if they still wanted to use it to build the
04:37skyscrapers.
04:38I don't know really why this had to be a separate piece.
04:41It just clips onto the end, but it doesn't really serve really much more of a purpose.
04:45I guess that's the whole part, but I mean, wasn't this really all that necessary?
04:50I mean, Superman is still going to be squeezing the life out of that metal.
04:53Anyways, okay.
04:54So what we're going to do, we get our last shoulder piece.
04:58If you want to put this onto Superman's body, we're going to take the front half of it.
05:02And the front half, you'll know, has the Superman emblem on the front.
05:05So we'll just clip that.
05:07We're not really even so much clipping it on just yet.
05:09We're going to flip the cape around.
05:10I think, is the cape necessary?
05:12Maybe the cape isn't necessary.
05:13We'll just clip these.
05:15So how it works, as I'm following along with you, there's holes on the tops, nothing
05:20on the bottom.
05:20And then there's pegs here on the top.
05:22So we can just snap everything together.
05:25That goes one.
05:26That goes the other.
05:28And there's really nothing actually attaching the bottom half of the armor onto Superman's
05:32torso.
05:34So then you get these shoulder pieces and they're going to clip on.
05:37This seems really all more excessive than necessary.
05:40And these just, I already see one problem.
05:45You know what?
05:45I'm looking at this.
05:48Yeah, there's, I don't think I actually had the peg completely attached onto his torso.
05:52That is going to hold a whole lot better.
05:56Now let's finish what we started.
05:58The front of his armor, snap this in.
06:02One problem really does face this armor is there's nothing, sure, it attaches onto the
06:06back of his body, but there's nothing really here that clips onto the front of his torso.
06:10So every little banging that you do seems like it wants to remove the armor completely.
06:16I'm sure I probably could have practiced this too prior to hitting record, but I wanted to
06:20be, I wanted to experience this the same way that you were experiencing this, whether you
06:24liked it or not.
06:26So he has shoulders.
06:27Those go either up or down.
06:29I guess if you really wanted to, you could have them a little further up.
06:32I wonder if this is going to be also armor that's going to be shared with Lex Luthor.
06:35I mean, obviously he's not going to have a Kryptonian symbol on the front.
06:39I guess if they wanted to have fun with it, they probably could have put a slash through
06:43it.
06:43So it'd be like, no Krypton, no Krypton.
06:46But that's what Superman's armor looks like.
06:49Let's just get that.
06:49There we go.
06:50Zoom that in just a little bit.
06:53I mean, it's okay.
06:54I mean, it really does remind me of the old days of Kenner where like they put armor on
06:58Superman for no reasons really whatsoever.
07:00I guess it's okay.
07:01I guess it does the purpose okay.
07:02I mean, it's not necessarily ruining either of the figures.
07:05So if you didn't like the idea that he had the armor on him, just simply take the armor
07:10off, which I'm going to do right now.
07:13So obviously I'm going to have to take the shoulders off first.
07:17That's the only way to really remove the front half from the back half.
07:20Just detach this.
07:22There we go.
07:24These seem more stubborn than anything else.
07:26I wish the front of the torso armor stayed as securely in place.
07:29And of course, we'll just go ahead and take these all off as well.
07:32Move all the pieces all out of the way.
07:35I mean, I guess the armor is okay from the standpoint of a child.
07:39Childs would probably get a little bit more.
07:41Children would probably get a little bit more enjoyment out of this than I would.
07:45I guess if you also wanted to, you could put the armor together and you could just have
07:49this displayed as a mantelpiece.
07:51Maybe on Superman's fireplace.
07:54Just put that on the back.
07:55Like a trophy.
07:56A trophy he got.
07:57He won.
07:58You know, again, for what it is, it's a play thing.
08:01I feel like honestly, though, they probably could have just easily gotten away with the
08:04steel garter and also the chain as some, just some of his accessories.
08:08The steel part, by the way, looks like it also does a clip onto this piece right here.
08:13I think it does.
08:15Just barely, though.
08:16I mean, like, we're just assembling things.
08:18It looks like a whole bunch of plastic pieces coming together.
08:23This, I don't think necessarily needs to clip onto here.
08:26And I certainly don't feel like this has to clip onto the end of it.
08:29That's just, that's just adding extra steps for the sake of adding them.
08:32By the way, too, if you wanted to see what Superman looks like when he's benching iron,
08:36literally, you can just go ahead and put that into his hand.
08:38Whoa, let's not knock the piece over there.
08:41Let's take the piece here.
08:42We'll put it into his hand first, and then we'll reassemble ourselves.
08:46At least the plastic for his hand is soft enough, so you don't have really any worries
08:50that way.
08:51Open that up.
08:53Get in there.

08:56And we can also take the other half, which, again, doesn't seem like it makes much of
09:00a purpose to me, at least.
09:01But, yeah, that's what Superman looks like when he's benching iron.
09:07It is what it is.
09:08I mean, again, I don't really think necessarily Superman needed, he didn't need to have so
09:12much stuff thrown with him.
09:13I think just, if honestly, I'd given him just a little shard of kryptonite, probably would
09:17have been perfectly fine.
09:20Move those accessories all out of the way.
09:22We'll get a closer look now at Wave 2 Superman.
09:25You know, there's a trend that I've started to notice with a lot of these DC Core figures,
09:30and I've noticed that more with Wave 2 than I did with Wave 1, they seem to really have
09:34long heads.
09:35Superman has this.
09:37Jon Stewart has that as well.
09:38I mean, we're going to be talking a little bit about that when we eventually get around
09:41to looking at the figure.
09:42Body-wise, though, it does look, though, like they are using the same body as Batman.
09:47You can kind of tell by the fact he's got these lines down the middle of his thighs.
09:51Batman had that, too.
09:53And he's also got the panel lining here.
09:54So they sort of devised at least a body that several figures could make use of.
09:59And yet, funny enough, though, I mean, obviously, he's going to be a bigger body.
10:02He's not using the same body as Flash.
10:05I mean, short of maybe having Batman having the gauntlets, Superman doesn't have that.
10:10It is very much the same body, different overall, or different underoos, different belt, clearly
10:15all together.
10:16By also molding the body and only printing on whatever image that they wanted to use.
10:22I don't know, again, why the camera's not focusing.
10:24By also just printing this on the front of his chest makes things a whole lot easier.
10:29They don't have to worry about retooling torsos every single time.
10:33But again, like, the colors look pretty good for Superman.
10:35I like the blues that they went with.
10:36The reds look good as well.
10:38Pretty clean looking paint.
10:39But again, I do feel like maybe Superman's face is a little too long.
10:44I think for what it is, though, as a kid entryway line, I think the face is really, really still
10:49quite good for Superman.
10:50I feel like maybe, though, like, again, looking at the larger Superman and the smaller one,
10:55maybe, though, the larger Superman had the better looking face, even though it does look like they
11:00are using the same head sculpt.
11:03Now, this Superman does have some additional articulation.
11:06The larger core Superman, which, again, we've already had a look at, didn't have really as much.
11:10But what it did have going for it was the size.
11:13Didn't have any elbow articulation.
11:15Didn't have really anything in the way of the knees.
11:17But certainly when it comes to, like, the smaller core figures, they get a little bit
11:21more.
11:23Superman's articulation is that he's going to have the ball joint in the head.
11:25So it's going to allow, first of all, the head to rotate all the way around.
11:28That's going to look down and up, back and forth.
11:30Arms do rotate all the way around as well.
11:32You can hinge those easily out.
11:35There's a bend at the elbow.
11:36Everything really I'm covering right now is everything that we've looked at already in
11:39the wave.
11:40One core figures.
11:41Nothing changes here for Supes.
11:43Hands do rotate.
11:44Oh, by the way, the arms do rotate in case I just happen to leave that point.
11:47Waist swivels.
11:48That's all you're really going to be able to get.
11:50Legs split.
11:51Ball joints there, by the way.
11:53They go forward.
11:54They go back.
11:55A little bit of a swivel.
11:56Three cores the way up the thigh.
11:58There's actually quite a substantial swivel.
11:59And he's got the single hinge knee.
12:02Nothing really rotates down below.
12:03It does feel like the boots are a separate piece.
12:06So you can turn them just a little bit.
12:08And all the figures so far, I think maybe Joker was the only one that didn't, seems so far
12:12to have pegles in the bottoms of their feet.
12:15Now, this wave is going to be still very Batman heavy.
12:19Not only are we getting, obviously, a Jon Stewart, a Superman, they are the unique figures.
12:23Then we're getting a Joker-ized Batman, and we're also getting an all-black stealth Batman.
12:28So if you haven't already gotten tired of Batmans being used for the DC Core, well, we get another
12:33two in the DC Core Wave 2.
12:36Bringing back in, again, the League members.
12:38Flash clearly seems to be standing out here with the unique body, whereas both Superman
12:44and Batman are using the same bodies again.
12:46Bigger bodies, bigger, more muscular bodies seem to be borrowing so far this mold.
12:50I guess Flash is a little leaner of a hero, so he's not going to rely really as much on
12:55the mass.
12:56I like, really, the Superman.
12:58He, again, comes included with a lot of things that you kind of really ask yourself.
13:01Like, as a kid, you would like this.
13:03As an adult, you sort of think to yourself, I know I'm only going to put the Superman on
13:07display, and likely these things are just going to end up sitting in a tote or a bag somewhere,
13:11just a big bin of accessories.
13:13I think if anything might be displayed with my Supes, it might be the steel girder, which,
13:17again, I know.
13:19Materials, Superman.
13:20Materials.
13:20That's costing somebody out of pocket.
13:22Comes, of course, included with the chain.
13:23I might be more likely to use these than I would likely be using the armor.
13:28Superman is pretty already armored up as it is already.
13:30He's the man of steel.
13:31Does he really need any additional steel encasing his body?
13:35I don't really think he does.
13:36Superman has a whole lot going on.
13:38What he doesn't have going on, though, is the top of that girder.
13:41Every time, though, I've tried to attach it on, it keeps falling off.
13:44I guess that's, quote, one of its play features is that it's constantly popping off.
13:49So if Superman is battling a bad guy, maybe that's just a piece that breaks off when he
13:53breaks it over the bad guy's head.
13:55Ouch.
13:56At least Superman is going to be protected by a use of the armor that's going to go and
14:00snap over top of his body, making use of, of course, the hole that's on the back of
14:03his torso.
14:03So once again, like the Batman that came with the Bane, was it the Batman with the Bane?
14:08Or maybe it was the Clayface.
14:09Batman had a rocket launcher that attached onto the back of his torso.
14:15So Superman's armor does the same.
14:17Yay.
14:17There's a reason why that exists.
14:19I don't know really why I would have a reason for this to exist when it comes to displaying
14:23Superman on the shelf, where I have currently my core figures and I can't see Superman really
14:28standing front and center with his armor on his body.
14:30I like it.
14:31I mean, it's there.
14:32It had to be included, I guess, as an accessory piece.
14:34I think, though, truthfully, he probably could have been just fine to have the metal beam,
14:38the crushed metal beam.
14:39It's coming out of somebody's pocket.
14:41And, of course, the chain.
14:43What's interesting, though, is that Superman only really has one gripping hand.
14:47So even though he has things that he can hold, things that he can taunt and flaunt his muscles
14:51with, he technically only really has one hand to do that with.
14:55So if you did want to have him displayed with the chain, I guess the chain could latch onto
14:59the hole on the bottom of the girder.
15:01I mean, again, we're just assembling stuff, aren't we?
15:03We assembled armor on his torso.
15:05We assembled stuff to the girder.
15:06In the end, the takeaway, I feel, for this review.
15:09First of all, I hope that we had fun, but that just things had to come together.
15:14Coming together, though, certainly from a wave two standpoint, I'm glad at least Superman
15:18came now and we didn't have to wait so long to get him later.
15:21I still don't know whether we are going to be getting female bodies.
15:24I mean, you know, to have a Batman, then to have a Superman, it feels empty not having
15:29yet a Wonder Woman.
15:30So I hope that she's going to get eventually a release.
15:32But the rest of this release for the wave two will, again, be Jon Stewart and two other
15:37Batmans.
15:37One's going to be technically a Jokerized Batman, so you can make the valid argument,
15:40well, it's not really technically Batman.
15:42It still is a Batman.
15:43And we're also going to get an all-black stealth Batman.
15:47Two figures, by the way, that we will be looking at in upcoming reviews.

15:57I guess if you were a younger collector, you would say, yeah, armor!
16:01Older collectors might be like, yeah, armor!
