McFarlane Toys DC Multiverse DC Classics Aztek Figure Review

00:00Finally, the citizens of Vanity have something to cheer about. There's something new for Nayeli.
00:05Here's your look at the brand new McFarlane Toys, DC Multiverse, DC Classics, Aztec.
00:24The Brotherhood of the Q raised Uno to wear the helmet of Quetzalcoatl,
00:28defend the city of Vanity, and the world against the shadow god Tezcatlopoco.
00:32When Uno arrived in Vanity, however, he encountered a vigilante named Bloodtype,
00:36aka Dr. Curtis Falconer. Bloodtype died after their battle, but not before he told Uno that
00:41he was about to start work at St. Bartholomew's Hospital that very day. Deciding he needed a
00:46civilian identity, Uno impersonated Falconer, protecting Vanity as a superhero later dubbed
00:52Aztec by the press. After team-ups with Green Lantern and Batman, Aztec briefly joined the
00:58JLA, but died attacking the living planet Megadon, the supposed second coming of Tascalopoco.
01:04Boy, did I ever struggle with the read-up for Aztec. Let's hope, though, that I didn't struggle
01:07with the figure. Before that, we get a closer look at the DC Classics, Aztec. First, I'd like
01:11to thank Popeye the Toyman. A name you've heard before, a name you'll hear again. I actually
01:17picked it up from him on the Facebook Marketplace. For how tall, though, Aztec's going to stand,
01:21let's take the trusty tape measure. If I'm reading this correctly, Aztec stands seven inches in
01:27height, or about 17 and a half centimeters tall. Now, the guy has had team-ups with both Batman
01:34and Green Lantern, so I think it would be probably fitting enough to bring in some of my favorite
01:38versions of both the characters. He's also aligned himself as well with the JLA, and I'm just going to
01:43bring in a couple examples of those. Not many, though, but here's what the figure looks like also
01:47with the DC Classics Superman and Wildcat as well. Even though he does wear a mystical four-dimensional
01:53suit, we're going to try our best at least to get this review in two dimensions. We're working
01:57currently on three, but that would involve you guys having to then spend a little extra money
02:00and get yourself 3D goggles. Even though if you even had 3D goggles, you'd probably even be able
02:06to see, though, the figure doesn't have really much in the way of accessories. Sure, yeah, he does come
02:10include with a display stand. Sure, yeah, it does have the DC logo down below. And sure, yeah, it does
02:14have,
02:14of course, a peg that's neighboring to that that can plug into either
02:17one of Aztec's boots. The figure does also come in clue with a trading card. Now, I realize,
02:23looking at the trading card, that I have it upside down, because, of course, the way that
02:27the font is designed, it's at the bottom, though. I feel really like it should have been actually
02:31this way up, where he's kind of flying towards us, as opposed to having it look like he's flying or
02:36kind of looks like he's actually falling upside down. It's from the DC Classic Band, and, of course,
02:41on the back of that, his real name and the struggle that I had, his real name is Uno. You
02:46can
02:46probably already see for yourself. There's quite a lot of reading, and there's quite a lot of harder
02:50words to read as well. He comes, at least, though, in clue with the card, and the card is also
02:54a
02:55reminder, first of all, that I feel like it should have first also been this way. But also, something
02:59that I really always liked about Aztec was the fact he had longer horns. These long spikes that he has
03:04in the back of his helmet, unfortunately, aren't here, though, in this new release from McFarlane Toys.
03:09The only other thing that he has outside of a trading card and display stand is working close
03:13fists, which I gotta admit, though, those small fists do seem rather tiny. I mean, again, like when
03:20you put them against the figure's body, again, I'll swap them out in a second, it does seem like he's
03:24got very small hands. I feel like these could also really be good hands for maybe a joker as well,
03:30if you'd like to have the clown prince of crime wearing blue instead of traditional purple.
03:35Swapping out the hands, by the way. One thing I also want to bring your attention as well
03:38is that not only do I feel like the hands are small, but there's something to be said,
03:43though, about flat hands where there's not really a whole lot going on for them.
03:46I feel like if you're going to be giving flat hands like this, I'm just only demonstrating with
03:50my own flat hand, it would be only just nice to bend the fingers just a little bit so they're
03:56not
03:56completely flat. It looks like he really would be going up to the JLA and giving everybody high fives
04:02just by only adding just a little bit of bend in any one of those fingers, just giving him a
04:07little
04:07bit more of a dynamic pose. Because if you have them just displayed like this, it looks like he's
04:12so awkwardly standing there, nervous, I'm sure, that people are going to be coming up and talking
04:16to him. I just feel, again, like the hands probably could have been curved a little bit more
04:21inwards, like this, or maybe not like that. And I also feel like maybe the hands could be a little
04:25bit larger as well. Anyways, though, if you did want to change out the hands, just a case of popping
04:29off
04:30the hands from the pegs, and replacing them with very, obviously very small looking hands.
04:36Again, I'm only going to peg these in the pegs here just to show you guys.
04:40It would be like, which is the worst of the two? What's the worst of the two evils? Because again,
04:46like if I plug the hand in, if eventually I get around to actually doing this, because these pegs
04:49always move around on me. Bear with me here. We're going to twist it slowly, maybe talk a little
04:57less, maybe do a little more. Plug them in place. There we go. Again, if you like, look at the
05:02size
05:02of his hand here, and you look at even like both of these hands, I just feel are way too
05:07tiny.
05:07It's also interesting to note too, like the gauntlets that he have is actually one of the few times that
05:12a figure from DC Multiverse has had, if I just take the hands back off again, removable gauntlets.
05:19I'm not sure why they had to be really removable. Would it have cost just as much maybe to remold
05:25this?
05:25I'm assuming this would probably be a body that we've already gotten before, but would it have cost
05:29more to mold the new arm with this now on the end of it, rather than having this separate? Because
05:36I
05:36feel like right away, there's already going to be something that could potentially be lost on the
05:39figure. It just seems like it doesn't make any sense. But again, like says the guy that's not
05:43actually building these figures from scratch or selling them to the market. Let's go ahead and
05:48just get his tiny little hand back in place. It's getting these blasted pegs. I tell you, though,
05:54tell us all about it. I tell you, though, these pegs are a bit of a nuisance. Just get them
05:59on.
06:00Get them on there. Aztec, unfortunately, though, doesn't come included with any other accessories.
06:05And I was kind of thinking to myself, like, I like Aztec. What could potentially have Aztec come
06:09included with? Well, his like his super abilities are strength, speed, flight, and visibility.
06:14And tangibly, an advanced energy projection. So right away, if you look at the last thing,
06:19an energy projection would have been perfect. It's a whole lot of Ps. Just to go something on
06:24the end of his hand, instead of just giving him the bare basics. I guess maybe the logic with that
06:29was probably people aren't going to be as interested maybe in an Aztec as they would be with the
06:33Batman. So maybe they kind of skimped it back for things that the figure does have. Now, I'll say
06:37right away, one thing that I was disappointed to see on this Aztec, because again, it's very few figures
06:42that we ever have gotten of this character, that his horns aren't long enough. I mean, again, based
06:47on the design, at least that they decided to go with, most of the time when we usually see Aztec
06:52in
06:52the comics or in the Justice League Unlimited cartoon, he tends to have much longer looking
06:58spikes on the back of his head, not so much the short ones that he has. Saying that, though, I
07:03actually do think the face sculpt is pretty good. It does look like Aztec, short of again, short of the
07:08fact that the figure does have slightly smaller spikes on the back of his head. I do like this
07:13use of gold that they've given. It does look a little unfinished on the back, where I feel like
07:17they probably could have gone in there with a second coat of paint. Of course, he does also have
07:21the gold here on the sides of his shoulders as well. This whole piece, if I was to lift this
07:26up,
07:26now I know this is a body that we've gotten before. I just, I'm drawing a blank right now as
07:30to which
07:30body they've used before. But I know, though, that does look like they've taken now a new piece of
07:35body, and they've actually just put it over top of his torso. Again, I guess that probably would be
07:40much like the gauntlets, a cheaper way of going around getting a figure like this out, instead of
07:45having to mold the arm with this now on here, and having to mold a brand new torso piece on
07:49top.
07:50Maybe again, it's just cheaper, says this guy. Maybe it is cheaper to actually mold this as a separate
07:54piece, and then just put it literally over top of the figure's torso. The trunks look, again, a little
08:00down below, like I'm sure we've gotten this before. Maybe it is with a Batman. More than not, I would
08:04imagine that it probably is a Batman body that's been used before for Aztec here. But I think the
08:09colors are pretty good on him. I like the gold. I like this teal color that they've given for his
08:13trunks. It does look like they've added a little too much wash here on the front of his body. I'm
08:18trying my best not to run with my finger across his groin. But yeah, the darker color, though, I feel
08:22probably could have been pulled back just a little bit. Speaking of pulling back, hey, buddy, can you just
08:27pull that back a bit? We don't need to have it right in our faces. I like the boots. I
08:31think the boots
08:31look really good on this guy as well. Now, the boot does seem, though, unlike the gauntlets,
08:36it does feel like it's actually molded to the lower leg. So they probably, if had they had to
08:41make this a brand new mold, they would have done this all as one piece and not as separate boots.
08:46On the bottoms of his feet, by the way, he does have, of course, the pegles. Going back to what
08:50I
08:50said before about having a display stand and only one peg to work with, obviously the one peg can go
08:55into only one of his heels. For Aztecs, articulation. The head is going to be on a ball joint. It
09:00allows the
09:01head to rotate all the way around. I'm not sure if you missed it or not, but these spikes that
09:06he
09:06has on the back of his head are actually more of a softer plastic. They're not prickly to the point
09:10where you're actually going to be drawing blood. I mean, I can't think that they're probably going
09:14to be able to sell a figure like that that would be able to do that. But still, don't be
09:18running
09:18around the house with Aztec in your hand in case you fall it on. At least you fall your eye
09:22on top of
09:22that because that probably would still hurt. The head's going to be, again, on a ball joint, so it allows
09:26the
09:26head to rotate all the way around, up and down, back and forth. And the figure does also have
09:31I wanted to say before that the figure had like a ball joint at the base of his neck, but
09:35doesn't
09:35seem to be the case. Shoulders are a little more limited on Aztec just because he has all this extra
09:41piece. I don't know. I feel like this probably could have been cut right here and may have been added
09:47onto his arm. I know that would have then involved more cost of producing the figure. It probably just
09:51is so much cheaper just to make this as all one piece. But making though all one piece limits then
09:56what you could do with the figure. So you can't really rotate his arm all the way around. You
10:01sure could still hinge his arm out 90 degrees or a T pose. But yeah, he's a little bit more
10:06limited
10:07where you really can't move it all the way around. You could certainly, though, rotate his bicep all
10:11the way around. He has a double hinge in his elbow. Hands rotate all the way around as small as
10:15they may
10:16seem. Of course, there's also a hinge there as well by the nature of the peg. Top of the torso
10:20is going
10:21to be on our ball joints. Lower from that, the abdomen is going to be doing pretty much that same
10:25thing. Legs do split. And once again, they are using ratcheted joints for these. Oh, that's
10:33satisfying. Buddy, keep the groin away from our faces. And the legs do go forward and back. A little
10:38bit of a swivel there at the top of the thigh. Nice double hinges in the knees. Good and chunky.
10:43Ankle moves up and down. Ankle rocker there as well. And the figure does also have some toe articulation
10:49as well. It's, you know, it's a good looking figure. There is some things, though, that I'm
10:54not crazy about when it comes to Aztec here. I think, first of all, he probably could have used
10:59a lot more accessories than what he actually got. I mean, like, short of having, again, I go back to
11:03short, short of having really small hands, the figure only really has at his disposal, out of
11:09packaging, just a trading card, which, again, I have it going the wrong way, and also a display stand.
11:15And that's it. Short of, again, some swappable hands. I still feel, again, like when it comes
11:20to flat hands like this, Superman may be the exception to this rule. But when you include
11:26flat hands like this, I feel like you have to go in there and bend the fingers because
11:31it puts the hands in an awkward position where it feels like he has to go around giving high fives
11:36to everybody. Hands, I feel, should have been a little bit larger. They should have maybe curved in
11:40a bit. I'm sure this could be something I could also fix with a little bit of hot water. Put
11:44this maybe
11:44in hot water and see if I can go in there and bend the individual piggies, whether they're going to
11:49the market or not. Short hands. Again, he does have the gauntlets that are going to fall off his
11:54forearm. So just be careful of that. It's a good figure. I mean, it has issues with it that I
12:00feel
12:00like could have probably been making this figure a little bit better. But I think the biggest one for
12:04me is really like Aztec. I've always considered the character having these long spikes in the back.
12:09I don't know if, again, it's a safety issue. And maybe that's one of the reasons why
12:12Todd and his team had to omit the idea of longer spikes on the back. But it is, though, the
12:17one
12:17thing that I always think that Aztec should really have. And unfortunately, though, the figure under
12:22delivers in that department. I think most of my interest for Aztec probably stemmed from the days
12:27of the Justice League Unlimited cartoon. And of course, the subsequent figure release that he did
12:32get, where he actually, I think, came in clue with a shield as well. I wish I still had all
12:36my Justice
12:37League figures. So there's remorse. But if the fact that the figure did come in clue with a shield
12:42could have also been maybe a solution to the problem of this figure lacking in accessories, maybe
12:47even an energy effect, like I said before in the review, we're getting a shield. Something that the
12:52figure, I feel, needs to have. So it makes it feel like the figure isn't just an afterthought, which
12:57is kind of, again, funny because like Aztec is coming near the end of this line. We're kind of getting
13:02to the
13:02end of really like the lights at the end of the tunnel of where we're going to be going with
13:06the Justice
13:06League. Oh, more specifically, I guess, where we're going with the DC Multiverse line, McFarlane
13:11toys. Near the end, of course, its line is now giving us an Aztec. I kind of really feel like,
13:16too, with
13:17Aztec saying what I said before, Spike's not being long on the back of his helmet. If you can't pull
13:23off what
13:24I feel would be a notable trait about the character, unless he's had shorter horns. If he is, and he
13:29has, let me
13:29know down below, but I feel like that, again, is one of the things that Aztec is known for having.
13:34If it is a safety issue where they just couldn't put it on the figure's head, I would almost even
13:39just say, don't release the figure. Now, again, like if this is the way he does look at some point
13:45in the comics with slightly shorter spikes, that's one thing, but if he's always known for having
13:49longer spikes, you're really kind of selling this guy short. There we go again, with the short jokes.
13:55Selling this guy short with not having those on the back of his helmet. What do you guys

14:08That's where like a lot of the more, I don't want to say obscure characters. Obscure probably isn't the
14:12best word to be using, but there are certain characters, though, that I only really remember
14:16knowing them because of seeing them in Justice League Unlimited. And then from there, it was like,
14:20oh, that's kind of a cool character. Picked up the figure for Aztec, and sort of liked the character
