Many individuals with Complex PTSD (CPTSD) seek therapy for symptoms like anxiety, relationship issues, or persistent self-blame, without realizing that toxic shame lies at the root of their struggles. Unlike standard guilt which says "I did something wrong": toxic shame targets a person's core identity, convincing them that "something is wrong with me".
This deep-seated belief often stems from repeated childhood trauma, such as humiliation, neglect, or constant criticism, and frequently persists into adulthood as social anxiety and self-doubt, even if the individual becomes highly successful professionally.
