Trauma does not affect only the mind. It can influence the body, nervous system, emotions, thoughts, sense of self and our ability to experience safety and inner peace.
In this video, we explore the **Pancha Kosha Trauma Framework™** from the book *What Happened to Me? Indian Perspectives on Childhood Trauma and Recovery* by Dr Gunjan Y Trivedi, Dr Riri G Trivedi and Dr Hemalatha Ramani.
Based on the Pancha Kosha model from the Indian Knowledge System, the framework looks at trauma across five interconnected layers of human existence:
• **Annamaya Kosha** – the physical body
• **Pranamaya Kosha** – the energy and breath layer
• **Manomaya Kosha** – the mental and emotional layer
• **Vijnanamaya Kosha** – intellect, cognition and discernment
• **Anandamaya Kosha** – the layer associated with inner peace, joy and authenticity
Childhood trauma may create disturbances across several of these layers at the same time. For example, chronic fear may affect the body and breath, influence emotions and thoughts, and gradually shape how a person sees themselves and responds to the world.
The Pancha Kosha Trauma Framework™ therefore offers an integrated way of understanding trauma and recovery. Rather than focusing only on thoughts or symptoms, it considers how healing may involve restoring balance across the entire mind-body system.
