Trauma does not affect only the mind. Its impact can be experienced across the body, breath and energy, emotions, thoughts, sense of self and our ability to experience peace and connection.

In this video, we explore the Pancha Kosha Trauma Framework™, presented in the book What Happened to Me? Indian Perspectives on Childhood Trauma and Recovery by Dr Gunjan Y Trivedi, Dr Riri G Trivedi and Dr Hemalatha Ramani.

Drawing from the Pancha Kosha model of the Indian Knowledge System, the framework looks at trauma through five interconnected layers:

• Annamaya Kosha – physical body
• Pranamaya Kosha – energy and breath
• Manomaya Kosha – mind and emotions
• Vijnanamaya Kosha – intellect, cognition and discernment
• Anandamaya Kosha – inner peace, joy and authenticity

Childhood trauma may affect several of these layers simultaneously. Physical tension, disrupted breathing, emotional distress, negative thought patterns and a loss of connection with one’s authentic self may all be different expressions of a larger trauma response.

The Pancha Kosha Trauma Framework™ offers an integrated way to understand these connections. It suggests that trauma recovery needs to look beyond symptoms alone and consider the interconnected body-mind system.
