00:03The wheels in motion to supply gas power to territory homes from the Beetaloo Basin.
00:10The Northern Territory Government has supported us so much to get to this point,
00:14and it's appropriate that they get the first fruits of the work.
00:17On red dirt, a moment captured, marking the first fracked gas from the Beetaloo,
00:23the expansive and long-touted onshore gas reservoir nearly 1,000 kilometres south of Darwin.
00:30We have stared down the hypocrites, and today there is a project
00:34that is going to literally change the future of the Northern Territory's economy.
00:39The gas released this week into the NT grid by US-owned Tamboran Resources.
00:45The first step, with the company pledging it could lead to more pipes being built
00:50to take the gas east and for export.
00:54It's proving a resource to justify pipeline investment
00:57and to justify the gas sales and the LNG processing.
01:01It's impossible to put a very strict timeline on that,
01:04but I think we all have confidence in the sequence.
01:06Native title holders from the vast regions around the Beetaloo
01:10optimistic the gas will bring jobs and royalties for their people.
01:14With Tamboran on board, like, we're talking, you know, for the investment,
01:20with, you know, like, with Elliot, you know, we want, like,
01:24better future for our younger generation and for us.
01:28Not everyone is beaming about the Beetaloo,
01:31with concerns over its impact on climate change
01:34and possible future of powering data centres in the desert.
01:38The Beetaloo Basin is a climate bomb
01:41and will result in more climate impacts across our region and across the world.
01:47No federal government has done more in relation to combating climate change
01:52than the Albanese Labor government legislating ambitions,
01:55putting it in law that this country is committed to net zero by 2050.
02:00It's been eight years now since a moratorium on fracking was lifted
02:04here in the Territory. And with the tap now turned on for gas here in the Beetaloo,
02:09government and gas company officials say fracked gas is here to stay
02:14for the next generations.
02:15This is about certainty and stability and affordability above all else
02:20and that's our energy policy.
02:21In Darwin, a new anti-fracking campaign has been launched
02:25as a debate that's been raging for a decade fires back up.
02:35are looking for ever since ofassen.
02:35Have we come here?
