00:24josh in for another chiefs visit each and every tuesday now as we march toward the regular season
00:30just a couple of weeks shy from the start of it josh we were talking uh we have a segment
00:35we call
00:35headlines i missed um because we're getting old and we miss things now or i do and we're busy
00:40have you reached that point yet a technology came up in this um have you reached that point where
00:46you've sort of checked out on new stuff and you're kind of good with what you have yeah at a
00:51really
00:52like alarming rate you know they say it's uh falling asleep and falling in love both happen
00:57the same way first slowly then all at once that's also happened for me not knowing who like tate
01:03mccray is and i'm going pretty big there i eventually figured out who she was but that took a long
01:08time
01:09and there are a lot of others right behind her that are on the wrong side of the cutoff for
01:13me so
01:13um yeah i i was pretty convinced throughout most of my 20s that i would just continue to keep up
01:18with
01:18things because i like keeping up with things and that has not been true so far in my 30s it
01:23doesn't
01:24happen i i have had to ask my co-workers in the office probably four times now who justin herbert's
01:30girlfriend is yeah yeah she was also one that i think other people knew before i did i caught on
01:34what does she do again the example that just came up in that segment i once thought cameo and only
01:41fans
01:41were the same thing interesting well i think they have some key overlaps probably and
01:50somebody somebody told me remember you remember the original coach on last chance you
01:55that the the first start of that show so somebody told me that they had a cameo from him and

02:02thinking that it was only fans and i'm like what why like what are you talking about uh that'd be

02:09headline that's how i learned that those were different things uh chiefs preseason in the
02:14books chiefs are never going to win a preseason game again uh that one touchdown in the preseason
02:20i don't know what i honestly for me the biggest takeaway is they avoided the big one no big injury
02:25uh they have plenty of nicks and bruises that we can be concerned about but as some teams lost
02:31really critical players the chiefs at least avoided that yep and that you know that that's also the
02:38reason that you didn't see patrick mahomes out there like this is pure speculation nobody go
02:42aggregate this or anything but i saw patrick mahomes go through his pregame warm-ups three times i think
02:47if that was the super bowl he could have gone but i think if he would have gone out there
02:51and played
02:52in a preseason game without either josh simmons or trace smith or any combination of the starting
02:58line and then mahomes suffers any sort of setback it would have been like debilitating for for for a
03:05kingdom so i mean that is the best part of all of this there are little takeaways um across the
03:11board really from players like jalen royals to felix inu dk uzama some like young guys that you saw some
03:18sparks from but none of that now now that the roster is set at least none of the preseason stuff

03:25matters all that much despite the fact that at least i was living and breathing nfl preseason for
03:30these last three weeks now the roster's set they've decided who's on the right side and the wrong side
03:35of the 53 and all of those guys who stood out in the preseason now have to do it when
03:39the games
03:40actually count when opposing teams are scheming to stop you instead of just going out there to go
03:45through your reps josh who is the first person that you mentioned tate who tate mccray i don't i gotta
03:52i gotta look that up i don't know but i know her name she sings i think she sings yeah

03:58pretty with that's what bothered me about justin herbert's girlfriend like i i'm with it i might

04:48okay back on track here love me some shania uh after the cuts josh i mean any big surprises or
04:56did it kind of work out pretty much how you thought it was going to work out as far as
05:00those
05:01final roster cuts there there was only one move that i was like flat out very surprised by and it
05:07was them cutting amari demarcato um the cowboys swooped him up and and waiver claimed him and
05:12everything so he's in dallas now um the the two moves that i guess could have been surprising
05:17a month or two ago were demarcato and cater kohu those were both like one of the first kind of
05:22waves
05:23both one-year deals but free agent signings from this offseason cater kohu i'm not that surprised
05:28by because i think the writing on the wall was kind of there throughout training camp they draft
05:33jayden kennedy is kind of a long-term nickel defender slot corner type but then it seemed
05:37like chris rollin wallace really kind of had the the inside track on that job and steve spagnuolo
05:42still loves legerius sneed so the the roster math didn't really work out for kohu even though i feel
05:48like he should be on somebody's roster right now the chiefs had so much redundancy in the slot that
05:53wasn't super super surprising demarcato was the one that i was loud wrong on like i had a
05:57a mailbag a couple weeks ago over on on chiefs on si and somebody asked like who could be the
06:02veteran surprise cuts and i explained why it could be cater kohu and then why it wouldn't be amari
06:07demarcato and when it was demarcato as well that was the one that really surprised me not because he
06:12was even the second best runner on the team but i think that he was either the best or second
06:18best
06:18pass protector in that backfield behind kenneth walker and kenneth walker can't be on the field
06:24100 of the snaps that's not a way for an apple running back to live and he's had some injury
06:29issues here and there i i feel really good about what we saw from emmett johnson and brashard smith in
06:34the preseason again as running backs as pass catchers as runners but demarcato felt like he was here to
06:41make sure you had one more line of defense between a blitzer and patrick mahomes and so when demarcato
06:46was cut that was the biggest surprise for me because i just thought i thought he had a specialized
06:50role on this team where i probably would have i would have kept four running backs over four tight
06:56ends or maybe an extra offensive lineman i'm a little bit surprised how many they still kept
07:01even after cutting as a pole which wasn't necessarily as much of a surprise as demarcato but
07:07is kind of disappointing i liked as a pole and um he's he's moved on the washington's practice squad
07:12so those those are kind of the moves that that stood out to me demarcato was the one that genuinely
07:17surprised me though i want to talk about the wide receiver room we didn't really see any of them we
07:24had a question yesterday about remigio and do they need you know do they need that roster spot for
07:30somebody who's almost certainly just going to be on special teams i i would say yes because i don't think
07:34this team this year is going to be able to make any mistakes and if that guy does nothing but
07:39catch
07:39punts correctly then that probably is important for this team this year like they're just going to
07:45have to be better with penalties and turnovers this year so i get it are you are you comfortable
07:51are you happy with that room we didn't see any of the key guys all preseason right and so yeah
07:58so from
07:59the the number six spot you know andrew armstrong was the guy that some people were a little bit up
08:03in
08:03arms no pun intended um about trying to get on the 53 and and i didn't i didn't think that
08:09he was in
08:09huge danger of being claimed off waivers there's always that story not just for the chiefs but for
08:14just about every franchise you've got some receiver who barely misses your team's roster and you really
08:20hope that your team can get him back on the practice squad and then almost without fail you do i
08:26think
08:26armstrong on the practice squad is perfectly fine and i think that that logic that you explained is
08:30largely why dave tobe has kept nico remigio in a a almost uncontested race to be the the main punt
08:37returner for this team tobe even mentioned in his presser a week or two ago like he wishes he had
08:41more
08:41top-end speed but you go back to the sky more issues of years past and i think that the
08:46chiefs or at least
08:47tobe or or whoever there is making the decision might might be a little bit touchy to the idea of
08:53putting
08:53an inexperienced returner back there i would be a little bit more excited about that if remigio was
09:00a little more dynamic as a returner in addition to being like the vet you can trust back there but
09:06i
09:06understand why they did it i i of the the roster moves again where i was like a little surprised
09:10about four not super surprised but a little surprised by four tight ends i was never surprised
09:15that but that nico was going to be on this team um again you you wish he was a little
09:20more dynamic as a
09:21return man or offered a little bit in the passing game but you're not going to be throwing the ball
09:25to wide receiver six very often if you are something has really gone wrong and they've got at least four
09:30through cyrus allen and maybe five through jalen royals where they will get involved over the course
09:35of this season so i i do think that adds up even if if nico is essentially a specialist i'm
09:40glad you
09:40mentioned the penalties though because it's not just don't fumble last year nico wasn't muffin punts
09:45but there were too many holding penalties and jack cochran is on this team and you've still got
09:51a lot of linebackers who played a lot of special team snaps last year i assume they're going to try
09:54to get kevin knolls back on the practice squad after he was a late wave yesterday with the other
09:59corresponding moves they made so i i think that if it was like even last year if it was a
10:06clean unit
10:08if it was just no mistakes and and no self-inflicted wounds i think you'd probably take that now but
10:15to
10:15your point it's not just catch the punts it's catch the punts and don't let any of those other 10
10:19guys
10:20hold or otherwise be penalized blocks in the back or whatever because it was just it was a negative
10:25way too much of of last season so i i'd love you know i'd love dante hall back there again
10:30but if it's
10:31nico back everybody in front of him also needs to play a cleaner game throughout the season
10:35love the dante hall reference x factor that's right i want to touch on something you mentioned a little
10:42bit ago uh on the offensive line and just how many uh how many bodies they got there of course
10:48last week they trade with the giants for josh uh azudu does that what does that tell you are
10:55they looking for depth or are they still just not sure on what that what that starting line is going
11:01to be yet uh how are you reading those numbers on the offensive line i think the azudu trade and
11:07the trade for diego pounds were just the chiefs spending a tiny bit of future draft capital to get
11:12ahead of the waiver claim system even having a higher waiver claim this year i think they clearly
11:16looked at those guys and thought eh pretty good chance that they don't make it to us with the
11:20ninth waiver claim here um pounds in particular is kind of interesting because he he's got a full
11:25rookie contract now of team control as a udfa from this year so also both players they could have
11:31signed like azudu was a free agent this offseason and pounds was an undrafted free agent and you know
11:36the chiefs also feel like they got pretty lucky i think with kahlil benson in that mix like i mentioned
11:40asapole earlier i liked him on this team i liked him as a a developmental option for years to come
11:47they end up making that roster churn there at the bottom i don't really think this has anything to do
11:52with josh simmons or jalen moore i i don't think either of these guys could do anything about josh
12:00simmons missing time if that does happen i don't know that it will but like if if josh simmons misses
12:04time and now diego pounds is starting at left tackle you're you're still in a little bit of a of
12:09a
12:09bench there so i think that the top six are the top six i think it's your starting five and
12:14kahlil
12:15benson i'm a little surprised mike caliendo ended up making the cut again after adding azudu who i
12:20think is probably more guard than tackle at this point pounds is a real tackle prospect so i think
12:25they just saw an opportunity to refresh that depth on the offensive line and to try to build
12:32build a new nucleus there after maybe being a little bit disappointed with a lot of the guys that
12:37just didn't have very good preseasons uh a couple interesting decisions along the defensive line
12:44emmanuel ogba is out i think i i think that i read into that they feel good about the young
12:50players
12:51he he's always felt like kind of an insurance policy uh they go in and bring in the guy in
12:58the
12:58middle of the college football controversy jack pyburn uh who had a nice preseason they i i think they
13:05feel good about the about the if they're gonna let go of ogba don't you don't doesn't it tell us
13:09that they feel good about sort of that second line of gelati woods norman lot whenever he comes back
13:15and our mason thomas and i guess now young guy like jack pyburn like they look deep enough there
13:20that they could do it yeah and then even at defensive tackle marcus harris made the initial 53
13:25and then they waived him to pick up bryson easton who had a really nice preseason in san francisco
13:30this team has a ton of rookies and a bunch of udfas that ended up making it which again i
13:34also think is
13:34is very very interesting ogba they they got to one of those veteran spots on the practice squad
13:39also so if they need an elevation if if felix has a slow start if there's another injury ogba will
13:45be
13:45there and he you know he looked a little bit in the preseason like a player who was still available
13:52in mid-august whenever they signed him and whatever role they get from him i'm i'm kind of glad really
13:58that that he's the one starting from the practice squad because he might be able to give you
14:0212 snaps in three games as a practice squad elevation in december and and maybe he's a guy
14:09that can patch up a depth issue if somebody else suffers an injury but you need other people to
14:14raise the ceiling here you know what carloff this is going to be you hope gelati's back healthy enough
14:18for week one but our mason thomas is going to be the edge rusher that determines the ceiling if the
14:24ceiling of that group really changes i think that's similarly true for peter woods so um i do feel
14:30perhaps better about it now mostly because of our mason thomas's preseason just that it's not
14:36all theoretical anymore you've seen a little bit of it in a chief's uniform and not just a sooner's
14:40uniform to see what those traits can look like against not all starters and not all offenses that
14:46are preparing to stop them but the secret for our mason thomas is that when the regular season arrives
14:50defenses aren't looking at him first they're looking at chris jones and then they're probably
14:54looking at george carloff this until our mason thomas proves otherwise so i do still think that
14:59there's there are plenty of questions to be asked near the top end of the depth chart but i do
15:03think
15:03it's good that they were able to stash ogba on the practice squad and not end up having to depart
15:09ways with a younger player that might have gotten scooped up somewhere else you know josh going into
15:13this season and looking back last year not the year cheese fans wanted i mean ends with uh mahomes
15:20with a really terrible injury and then you know you wonder is he gonna be ready week one you know
15:25all these questions all these kind of bad feelings of last season but to me the offseason preseason camp
15:33the way mahomes seems to be just fine kelsey's back seems pretty focused it feels like all things
15:41considered it feels like it was pretty good camp and offseason and and and preseason going into week
15:48one i feel like we'd probably be surprised telling our past selves how good we feel going into week
15:54one after how last year ended yeah and and to kind of like connect from the start of this conversation
16:00to here it's been a relatively quiet offseason for my chief standards at least and certainly
16:08in terms of like the the bad chaos that you don't want to have obviously the draft was all hands
16:14on deck
16:14and they started nine and move up to six and all those things but everything since then it was kind
16:20of business as usual in saint joe we were talking about cyrus allen we've been talking about the rookie
16:26class and khalil benson and and trying to figure out you know what are the little tweaks and surprises
16:32with this roster but very very very few of those conversations have been nationally relevant very few of
16:40those have been you know nfl network hey we're reporting from saint joe they pretty much look like
16:46the chiefs mahomes looks good we'll see in week one and i think that's still really how it feels
16:50you know if they go out in week one and they throttle the broncos the chiefs are going to be
16:54the national
16:55story of week one if they go out there and get throttled by the broncos those good vibes are all
17:00going
17:00to go away and then i would say most likely that game's probably going to be pretty close probably going
17:06to
17:06be pretty stressful and then we're going to do this for a little while while we try to figure out
17:10are the chiefs back are the chiefs frauds of course it's going to be a mini week-long process but
17:16i would
17:17agree with with kind of both of your statements on the offseason that things went pretty well
17:21certainly from a health and attention standpoint after things kind of settled down when camp got here
17:26it feels like it's business as usual and now i'm just kind of getting itchy thinking about how long
17:32it still feels till week one gets here and we got to see if any of these players are any
17:36good and
17:36we're not going to know that until that's right i mean the preseason last offseason remember last
17:42offseason weren't we dealing with a bunch of rushy rice things too and like wondering about what's
17:47going to happen with all that and we still had our share of that this offseason as well but you
17:52know
17:52it was it was pretty cleared out by the time camp got here right right we're we're mostly there
17:57yeah just two weeks from yesterday uh josh we appreciate it um go go catch some some tate
18:04mccray i don't know if it's for me or not but i will go i'll just go learn the name
