00:02all right welcome back in everybody it is sports daily we are joined by wyatt thompson voice of
00:09the k-state wildcats wyatt let's just start with the hype train k-state dominant through two games
00:17defense defense still hasn't allowed a touchdown how excited responsibly excited should k-state
00:26fans be right now well i think they should be excited from what they've seen just because of
00:31as you said they're 2-0 you probably expected them when the year started to be 2-0 at this
00:37point but i
00:38think what we have seen was a really good get out of the gate game with nichols where you had
00:4485 guys
00:45in the lineup and then you face some adversity this past weekend against washington state and you
00:51faced a pretty good defensive team and um and and found a way to pretty much dominate for the most
00:58part now some would say they well they didn't necessarily dominate i would argue that they did
01:04um i think if you you can't take away the pick six at the end of the half but you
01:11rush for 295 yards
01:12against that front um that's pretty good domination in my mind and i thought it was not perfect uh maybe
01:20not as clean a game as the nichols game but i think you take a lot out of it the
01:24offensive line has
01:25played well they're running the football defensively i don't know where you you criticize it even if
01:33you're a really big uh critic there um at least that's the way i see it
01:42wyatt talking about uh avery johnson you know one thing i was thinking about uh last night when i was
01:47re-watching a lot of the game and getting ready to watch that uh pick six at halftime for the
01:53first
01:53time because i was covering stuff at the state fair during the game so i caught a lot of that
01:58after
01:58and i knew it was coming i saw the time on the clock and i was preparing myself you know
02:02preparing
02:02for how bad it was going to be and it was it was bad but with with avery i was
02:07just thinking you
02:08know and and i know people are going to go off the rails and say i'm like saying that avery
02:11johnson is
02:12josh allen that's not exactly what i'm saying i'm just saying as far as jacob as far as talent and
02:18skill set you know a big thing with josh allen even at wyoming in his first couple years in the
02:23nfl
02:23he was turnover prone he would make it he'd make a lot of bad choices but his instincts were always
02:30what you just still pointed to and just his drive and the way he wants to win he was pretty
02:35turnover
02:36prone at first i think with avery do we just need to accept that that's going to happen from time
02:41to time he's he's just that gunslinger type of mentality but the great thing i saw in the second
02:46half was that he seemed to get over of course it really helps when he got rodney fields he can
02:50just
02:50hand the ball off to that takes a lot of pressure off when he can just take it to the
02:53house like
02:54that but i was worried about that delay and worried that about avery just replaying that pick six in his
03:00mind sure over and over and over and i was worried that that was going to carry over into the
03:04second
03:04half thankfully it seems it didn't well you you said a lot of things there that i think we need
03:11to touch on one it was not a good play okay i think you start with that and realize that
03:18it was a
03:19a situation where they made a pretty critical mistake where they're really in great shape right
03:26before half at 17 nothing here's where the story gets interesting for me because i don't know if you
03:33heard avery after the ball game and in some of his uh postgame comments uh with the media
03:40uh colin klein wore that one i don't think avery had to colin basically said that one is on me
03:46don't
03:47blame the quarterback for that one we were trying to set up where we could get a hail mary some
03:52thought
03:52it was a field goal but that's not necessarily the case and i i won't go into why that is
03:58the case
03:59but uh suffice it to say that i think the hail mary thing was what was on his mind and
04:05i think if he
04:05had to do over again uh maybe they'd have played it a little bit differently okay so you go from
04:11there
04:12and avery afterwards said you know that doesn't happen very often where the coach wears it like
04:18that that that's paraphrasing not quoting but that's basically what the guy said i don't think he's
04:24trying to play away from the fact that he he threw the ball he threw the interception that's on him
04:29too but you know colin i think was a man to stand up and say no no don't blame him
04:36that's on me
04:37right and i like that i i think that's a good thing so now you get the adversity of that
04:42you go to
04:43halftime you come out you get ready to play and you have a delay then the defense comes out bang
04:50bang bang bang three and out and then you get a 75 yard touchdown run and for all intents and
04:55purposes
04:56it makes it 24 7 and for the most part the game is over at that point so i felt
05:02like that they
05:04really did about as good a job as they could overcoming that ending to the first half just
05:10based on you know the defense getting a stop and then you get that shock play and when you when
05:16you
05:16look at all of the the numbers i mean everything favors k-state they did not run the ball they
05:23did
05:24not throw it great um k-state got to the quarterback some which is i mean i'm sure you guys
05:30saw the
05:31window gregory play and all that that dude has twitch now i'm so excited for the way they're defending
05:38um the secondary was supposed to be a question mark they're not perfect but man they're getting
05:44better so there's a lot of things to like even if it wasn't perfect from my perspective there is i
05:50but
05:50i don't i don't i mean colin klein can say that i don't want to let avery off the hook
05:54for that
05:55decision no not not at all but again he's the guy that was saying i got he didn't say it
06:01this way
06:02but i got greedy i wanted i wanted to try i know but avery's now in his fourth year sure
06:07he cannot
06:09make that decision you know it's brady brought up a good point earlier when we were first talking
06:13about the game it's not that avery threw a ton of interceptions last year it's that the timing was
06:18almost always backbreaking and so that's that's where no matter what the situation is you've got
06:25to have and i think this is coming by the way i think this is why this is one of
06:30the big reasons i'm
06:30so excited that avery's back with colin klein because of what the film room looked like probably
06:36yesterday and today like what are we seeing right here because we have to be able to see that that's
06:42not the right decision this was washington state ultimately it was fine what if that's a big 12 game
06:50later in the year you cannot make that you can't make that decision yeah i think avery avery is
06:57looking good but there it is that decision that comes that just can't come he ran the ball really
07:04well he's looked good throwing he's probably why did they if they run the ball like this man he's
07:09gonna have a lot of wide open receivers this year so i don't think he's gonna miss throws like that
07:13it's these mistakes he has to cut out yeah yeah i'm not debating that at all it was was it
07:19a good
07:19throw no it wasn't and i'm not trying to say that avery shouldn't take some of the blame but i
07:26was
07:26just impressed that colin stepped up and said that one's on me you can say what you want about avery
07:31but
07:31that one's on me that's all i was trying to say there avery has been better um i i think
07:38when you
07:39look at it what do they have three penalties and two games you know what i'm gonna say that's pretty
07:45dang good that's the hype train stuff yes right the offensive lines look good they haven't committed
07:50penalties 95 yeah and that was supposed to be the problem i know that that's what i mean remember
07:58how the offensive line is supposed to not be any good yeah and the truth is and i i think
08:03i've said
08:03this to you guys i don't know this for sure but i i said before we played a snap this
08:09year
08:10which when we lost john pastore those guys on that offensive front okay and again this is charlie
08:19adams playing in front of tanner morley which wasn't supposed to happen either but let's say they're
08:24they've both been you know what they i think the coaches like both of those guys and and mike schmidt
08:31will tell you that charlie and duarte both have played and gotten so much better since they first
08:37arrived here but they have all along like villerill jones and hawkins period end of story and i think
08:44you can see why now through a couple of games are they totally where they need to be yet certainly
08:49not
08:49but to me that's one of the things that uh stands out as a good good thing why i think
08:56another big
08:57off-season question that seems to have been answered or a concern was what does k-state do with
09:03dylan edwards now a ku jayhawk you know what type we know the type of playmaker and skills and speed
09:09he
09:09has and like rodney fields jr not the biggest guy on the field actually that's where i i get so
09:15many
09:16goosebumps from time to time watching this colin klein coach team because we know the history of small
09:21little fast running backs like that at k-state and what they can do yeah uh boy how much has
09:27has that
09:28been answered as far as what now without dylan edwards with the addition of rodney fields jr and
09:33joe jackson still getting good looks i mean the depth we have when it comes to the run game
09:38again getting some goosebumps boy and you probably should that's a really good point
09:44you know let's go back and remind ourselves how how good joe jackson was at the end of last season
09:50he had that nearly 300 yard rushing game at utah and had nearly 125 yards against colorado
09:56that's a pretty good way to finish it up he was very confident and all of that coming into this
10:01year stronger better all of those things all of that is actual truth right and now you augment that
10:09by by throwing rodney fields and we i don't want to forget jay harris either man you know he he
10:17made the
10:17one uh play against nichols where he put the the ball on the ground but he's been solid but i
10:25don't know
10:25that there's a k-state fan out there that isn't excited about rodney right and they should be he
10:31is really really really really really good i think um i i think the coaches shocked everybody when they
10:39started him in game one but the reason is is because he was way good and and the best option
10:45uh in the
10:47two weeks leading up to game one and he has not disappointed i love everything about him man he
10:53really competes he's physical he's not the biggest guy but he can run and he is tough as hell i'm
10:59just
10:59going to say it he is tough which oklahoma state transfers better yeah greg yeah yeah they're pretty
11:05good aren't they yeah uh white i white thompson voice of the wildcats joining us it's i don't know
11:11you told us last week about washington state's front i think you got it we got everything we wanted to
11:16see it couldn't be any better for k-state we are seeing i think maybe the design of what colin
11:23klein would like the offense to look like and that's running the ball they they're doing it with three
11:29different players right now which you you know if the offensive line's good that helps everything
11:36doesn't it like i want avery johnson to light it up and be a pro player and all these other
11:40things
11:41but man it sure appears through two games like the strength of this football team is to run the
11:47ball and play defense and yet again looks an awful lot like a bill snyder team doesn't it yeah especially
11:53if you throw the the little uh caveat that is special teams out there too right i mean they were
11:58pretty good again there also yeah i i think you make a great point there because colin has said from
12:05the get-go we're going to live in in physicality world right uh that's that's what we want to do
12:10and and that starts with just good quality solid football you know tackling good special teams
12:16running it and but having some balance too we always used to talk about that a lot with with coach
12:21and i think that's kind of what this is they i do think what they're doing right now is is
12:28what he
12:28wants to be like um and i think the excitement for me is is that they have done a really
12:35nice job out
12:35of the gate but i think they know that they can still be better and they'll have to be better
12:42as
12:43you said a while ago when these games get harder you know i've i've looked at tulane i don't know
12:49in all honesty that they are what they've been the last couple of two or three years
12:54but that doesn't mean they're bad guys they were they were a cfp team last year and won 11 games
13:00um they lost at duke did you see duke just beat illinois i mean i mean what a wild i
13:07mean i'm sure
13:08you guys both expected oklahoma state to beat oregon right and i expected to play iowa like crazy
13:15tulsa i know welcome to college football boys here we go does it matter though why does it matter if
13:22two lanes good like i you know k-state can't control that stuff no what they can control is
13:28not giving up an offensive touchdown through two games and absolutely dominate they can only play
13:34who they play yeah yeah and i don't i want to take anything away from tulane i think they're pretty
13:39good as a matter of fact i thought they showed a lot of moxley the other night being down at
13:44home
13:44against south alabama who and south alabama is one of those teams that's pretty good coach my major
13:50apple white but everybody you know good team kind of a name right and that happens in this sport
13:56right it just does uh i think they will come in and they will compete but i do think k
14:01-state's the
14:01better team and should win the game so we'll see how they handle things uh yeah i think you take
14:08care
14:08of your own barn first i've always you know i've learned that from coaches from way way back
14:12worry about what we can control um coach snyder always used to say we can control between the
14:19white lines a lot of things but outside of that it's a little harder and you know what he was
14:23never
14:24wrong on that that's a fact yeah why you just get those feelings so many times and i was thinking
14:29about it again last night how you mentioned balance and that balance we have right now with the program
14:34we have a program that's so deep in history and tradition right now and tight success to bill
14:42snyder yet this is a team that just feels like it's just constantly looking forward it's such an
14:48interesting balance right now and with colin klein you know i kind of think that i get the feeling he
14:54has a big chip on the shoulder still and has that attitude about him because his team was so close
15:00to
15:00righting the wrong of 1998. they they were right there if things go different at baylor k-station
15:06national championship game sure that year do you wonder if he that's still in the back of his mind
15:11and so the big motivation would be like coming back to coach and be like let's let's still right that
15:15wrong it's an interesting it's an interesting question and it's one that i haven't really pondered
15:20a lot but here's the way i think i probably should answer that is there some truth to that probably
15:26so
15:26but i i think what what colin is all about right now is doing this thing the way he he
15:34wants to do
15:35it um and we're off to a good start here he has talked and talked and talked about what a
15:41special
15:41place this is and he's preached it to the players um and and i think they are all bought in
15:48and they've
15:48seen it right place was hopping the other day right i mean it was it was even through the delay
15:55they
15:56once we started again they were in the seats you know sometimes i mean not all of them but a
16:01lot a lot
16:02of them right so i i think what he really wants to do is do something here that hasn't been
16:10done before
16:10so what is that well they've won championships before uh what if we could at some point down the
16:19line be a cfp team be a playoff team you know those types of things and and maybe not just
16:25get
16:25there but do something with it i think that's what drives the guy he he wants to reward k-staters
16:30for
16:30their loyalty um and and just what they've done for him and and others over the years this this is
16:38a
16:38very loyal fan base guys you know that it's just um i think i think that's you know what drives
16:44him
16:45he wants to be good he wants to be great um and i i think that's how he works every
16:49day i'm about
16:50to run through a wall why say that again i'm about to run through a wall why you got me
16:55hyped up
16:57and that's okay i'm ready yeah yeah that is okay i i think there are some that that uh are
17:02still a
17:03little bit skeptical and i i totally understand that but i i get excited from for what i've seen
17:09to this point and and i do think they have more in the tank and and i i do think
17:13that
17:15i'm not going to kid you man i'm really excited about how they're recruiting they're not going to
17:19get everybody they want but they have one of the best high school players in america here saturday
17:23watching and he had a great time who knows whether they'll get him or not but the fact that they're
17:28getting those kind of people's to campus and noticing all the cool things that are going on here
17:32is great if you get your share right this year they're right it will help recruiting 100 percent
17:40it 100 percent well why uh it's another uh 11 a.m kick on saturday what do you guys have
17:46for us on
17:46the broadcast well looking forward to it you know we'll visit with colin visit with both coordinators
17:51uh i'm going to talk with uh the play-by-play guy at uh two lane here in a little
17:55while maybe get a
17:56little bit more on them cory glory and he's a terrific guy um not sure on players yet
18:02but um the guys that i've had so far have really played well like a ryan howard last week and
18:08two
18:09weeks ago and then uh caleb patterson um wouldn't mind talking to i mean rodney's been good and i'm
18:15going to talk to him at some point but i want to talk to joe jackson to see how that
18:19plays yeah you
18:20know joe you can say what you want but joe has handled this like a pro man he hasn't he
18:26hasn't you
18:27know buried his head and sulked he's he's gone out and fought and played and has been
18:32happy that rodney's done well that's the other thing that i think is great because the competition
18:37here is good and that's what you want and and you know weapons josh manning looks like the real deal
18:42he was really good how to target yeah it's it's going to be fun why we appreciate it you didn't
18:47help brady at all he's he's he's all jacked up and i'm ready to go why it's not he's not
18:53going to
