00:00interview on kfh and we have with us the voice of the wildcats wyatt thompson brady bowman with
00:09you tj cleveland in for jacob albrock and max power our producer and uh wyatt well first off
00:15welcome well it's good to be with you guys um unfortunately we're we're talking about a
00:24wildcat loss that is pretty disappointing and uh i guess we'll just jump into it it was it was not
00:30k-state's night for a lot of reasons and it was frankly a little bit of a surprise for me
00:35and uh
00:36you know clearly disappointing for for a lot of wildcats and uh on that plane home let's put it
00:42that way why we'll we'll dig into the intricacies of what happened out there on the field but as i
00:47said
00:47earlier in the show i think the best way to describe it uh is that since december right
00:54the hired colin klein and this this balloon has been inflating uh and then with a 3-0 start the
00:59way that they did uh it kind of just got popped a little bit not to say that it crashed
01:03down to earth
01:04but you're the balloon is not as inflated as it was right you're you're coming back to reality a
01:08little bit yeah it's perfectly said tj and good to be on with you guys i you know my thing
01:13is is that
01:14yeah everybody i mean as a heck of a heck of a marriage with colin klein and k-state from
01:21from
01:21my perspective and it still is i think that's the thing that i've been reminding myself about that
01:26you know he's just getting his feet wet you know his fourth game as a coach it didn't go as
01:31planned
01:31and and there were a lot of things that you can point to they didn't run the ball particularly well
01:36they had some drops in the past game they had some turnovers and mistimed uh penalties and mistakes
01:43but but at the end of the day they got beat at the line of scrimmage they just couldn't stop
01:47the
01:47outside zone run game and and um we knew going in uh two things one was the left side of
01:55that
01:55offensive line with cincinnati uh was filled with a couple of pros joe cotton is a really good player
02:00the tankestall kid is really good and k-state really struggled all night with that there's no
02:06question about it and yet you were still in the game and had a chance had you been a little
02:11bit
02:11better in some of those areas so there's that and then the other factor is is you know one game
02:17does not a season make you're into an off week now so you have to live with it for a
02:21couple of weeks
02:21that may be the hard part but maybe maybe you just flush it easier that way too and move on
02:26because
02:27you know what in two weeks we've got houston coming in here and there every bit as good and
02:31probably better than cincinnati so work to do yeah why as we talked about last week you know i was
02:38uh having our wedding during the game and when i look back a little bit later kind of catching up
02:43on it a little bit you know well after the fact my focus was appropriate in the right in the
02:48right
02:48focus let's make that clear all right after after you got the vision of your loving wife out of your
02:54head well i went right back to her when i looked at the looked at the box score a little
03:00bit later
03:00at time i felt pretty good and you know looking back at a 10-0 start it seems like it
03:05was a good start
03:05but why does this well let's start with this because this is the question i was meaning to
03:11ask you or that that was top of mind for me has your feelings as far as how you felt
03:16right after
03:17the game have compared to now after having a couple of days to kind of digest it are your feelings
03:22the
03:22same do you look at it any different uh than you did right after well i think you always look
03:28at it
03:28a little bit different once you have time to you know think it through and uh kind of relive
03:35it so to speak i'm one of those guys that the older i get the harder it is to flush
03:40those and i
03:40don't i mean we got home i i literally walked in the door i don't even remember uh 150 ish
03:49or some
03:49something and and i know i didn't even try to lay down until about three o'clock and you you
03:55sat there
03:55and you think back of what had happened if this would have been different or this call would have
04:02been different a lot of those kind of things so it is yeah it is a little different than right
04:08after
04:09because you you know the the truth is i the other thing that i wanted to say before and didn't
04:15put it
04:15in there is when we talked in pregame show about a lot of people around the league weren't sure
04:20what was k-state really and what was cincinnati really i don't know that we necessarily answered
04:27all of the questions with that but i think like everything else in the world it showed that k-state
04:33may have a wart or two um can they be corrected i think the coaches would tell you yes so
04:41i i think
04:42now i jump forward to what you're talking about and maybe you feel a little bit better
04:48um colin klein's going to address the media here uh in about an hour and a half or just a
04:53little
04:53over i'm anxious to see if the messaging is still the same if it may be slightly different what we
05:00will hear on the injury front with guys like jaron tibbs and will ansio and people like that so there's
05:06a lot on the table and i know that's rambling and a lot but that's the thing that you you
05:11kind of get
05:11into that mode where you think about you know what happened why it happened and now how do you fix
05:18it
05:18how do you move on and and where does that lead us frankly as we move forward again you got
05:23houston
05:23and kansas coming up right then you go to arizona state i mean we got we got a lot of
05:28football ahead
05:29of us uh why we'll talk about the the positives because there was a few in this game that you
05:33can
05:33take away but uh you know just speak on the negatives of what went wrong uh if you had to
05:37point something out uh what really is it i think that if you asked me uh there was times the
05:42defense
05:43you know obviously you give up 271 yards on the ground uh there were times the defense felt like
05:48they were kind of just like oh that guy's over there right you know they're just the kind of
05:51head spinning stuff that we saw at times last year right yeah it's a it's a good thought because i
05:57think
05:57when it's all said and done again you win and lose games at the line of scrimmage and k-state
06:01lost
06:02this game at the line of scrimmage uh i don't think their offense uh offensive line play
06:09excuse me what was as good as it needed to be but i thought they did compete i think the
06:15defense
06:15would tell you it just from a schematic standpoint a fit standpoint a tackling standpoint uh all of
06:24those things mattered it just seemed like if you think back to the game they had two really good
06:29runs and then k-state shut them off and then all of a sudden after a little while of shutting
06:34them off
06:35then it seemed like the floodgates open again well what was different well they were blocking it a
06:39little bit different too you got to give them some credit uh but but you know it got away from
06:45them
06:45so i think that is a negative right the other factor is for me i i felt like the biggest
06:52swing in the game
06:54and you mentioned the seven uh you know the lead at halftime um
07:01to me the play by derrick sally where he fumbles in the third what happens if you go down there
07:08and
07:08score and you make it 24 to 10 i agree i mean that was i mean they gave up there
07:11was like a 14 point
07:12swing in like two minutes of game time it felt like and then games only the other thing is on
07:17a positive
07:18side you know they were getting trucked around pretty good there and since he's driving to you know
07:24ice the game and k-state somehow some way even though things weren't going well forced a turnover
07:29and it gave him a chance so you know like every game you know that you're there's you know ups
07:36and
07:36downs good and bad and what have you but you can't you can't mask that this was not a good
07:42game for
07:43them at the line of scrimmage and and you have to be concerned bothered by it and and try to
07:48get it
07:48fixed and we'll see if they can quote get it fixed yeah staying with that i mean is this kind
07:55of the
07:55game so far this season where we kind of saw the the injuries to the offensive line and some of
08:00those
08:00key players kind of kind of show up yeah probably that's a that's certainly some would look at that
08:07as an excuse but but i have thought you know asked me about all the the thoughts that run through
08:13my head you know one of the things that i was thinking about sunday morning because i cranked right
08:17back in here after i mean i got to bed about three o'clock and i was back in here
08:21at 7 30 that's my
08:23brilliant life but one of the things i thought about was you know how different would it have been
08:31had we had john pastore how different would it have been if we had george fitzpatrick you you do think
08:38of those kind of things but the reality of it is we don't and you you've got to you can
08:44only control
08:45what you can control right some things are out of your control but um these coaches i think do feel
08:52like um you know it wasn't good but it it can get better and i i think just structurally i
09:00think it
09:01can and i think you have to live with that and see you see if you can make it better
09:04because
09:04you know here's the scary part you know you got houston coming in here in two weeks and i was
09:09re-watching their uh game with georgia southern on saturday now they were on the road but it was
09:14georgia southern so you take out of that what you want but they scored touchdowns on their first six
09:18possessions that's a little scary because they can run the ball they can throw the ball they have a
09:23really good quarterback a terrific running back who was at tulane who hurt us in 24 here so yeah that
09:31you just you just have to go back to work get your mind right again and say you know what
09:38we're going
09:38to work through this i think uh one of the biggest positives i think you can take away from the
09:43game
09:43obviously the wide receiver that broke out derrick sally jr uh is a guy that played at hutch right we
09:49saw him on a national championship game for the hutch blue dragons we just talked about hutch back to
09:52number one in the country presumably uh what what's going on with derrick's i i didn't realize because i
09:57was i i remember his name whenever he was at hutch uh and then i think he caught a touchdown
10:02in the
10:02national championship game and it's like that guy looks huge that guy looks like he could be a real
10:06athlete in the big 12 uh and then he didn't really hear his name and then last night on saturday
10:11night you hear his name a whole bunch what's kind of gone on with him this season well that's another
10:16good thought and and topic because i i'm like you he looks the part you know when you look at
10:24his body
10:24and i'm i'm looking at six three and two thirty four and you know the guy the guy had seven
10:31catches
10:32for 140 yards and you can argue all day long whether the third quarter fumble was key or not
10:38and or if it was a fumble or not yeah but but this kid has a chance to be really
10:44good is he a finished
10:46product no is he still learning certainly and i think that's part of it to answer your question tj he
10:52we needed him when jerron tibbs went down and give him credit he responded um and again on a night
11:00where k-state was you know hurt by some drops and stuff he was pretty good um i thought he
11:06was
11:07really good if you want to know the truth and if if he can kind of get maybe another step
11:12or two
11:12forward with with his god-given talent uh systematically uh k-state will be a better
11:19football team for it because he uh he's a good-looking athlete really good-looking athlete
11:25yeah wyatt uh you know avery had 30 completions 50 pass attempts which is probably a little bit
11:30more than uh anybody want to see in a game i was actually wondering if that was a record as
11:35far as
11:35completions what i can find and just a very quick search is that josh freeman had 36 completions on
11:4251 attempts in 2007 against oklahoma state so talk about avery and those wide receivers and and obviously
11:49the breakout game with with sally you know despite that fumble he would have to take that away i mean
11:54we're really really talking about the game he had but this is another game i think one a positive to
12:01take from this was sally and avery johnson three games in or i guess four games in there's been big
12:09wide receiver numbers like that but they've been revolving it like avery's finding a lot of different
12:13guys and i think that's maybe encouraging looking forward that whether it's tibbs he gets injured
12:20it's next man up whether it's been yeah uh josh manning he's stepped up uh before seems like there's
12:25some guys stepping up and avery's finding them yeah you covered a lot there and i think what i'd say
12:30is
12:30this 30 of 50 both of those are career highs for for avery which is fine except i i think
12:38i would say
12:39it's probably too many completions and too many attempts or at least too many attempts um k-state
12:47threw the ball i want to be accurate here so i'm going to look they threw the ball for 292
12:52yards
12:52uh that's a season high i believe um they rushed it for 155 which isn't bad uh but but i
13:01think they
13:01relied too much on the pass because of the um it was difficult to run at times even though when
13:08you
13:08look at the numbers joe jackson had 11 carries and averaged 5.4 but had only 59 yards rodney fields
13:15had an average of 4.2 and scored twice but his average was 4.2 both of those guys have
13:21been better
13:21than that so k-state even though the numbers look okay i think they wanted to be better yeah and
13:27what
13:27does that lead to maybe less than 50 pass attempts maybe 35 to 40 inch i think the like you're
13:35saying
13:35here why not to cut you off is that uh avery throwing a 30 of 50 we've had this conversation
13:40basically since avery's been at kansas state of what's the best version of avery johnson right
13:45i think uh and you can explain better than i they don't want him to throw the ball 50 times
13:51right
13:51and that's kind of just a product of the environment of what saturday night was i mean after that 14
13:56point swing we talked about they didn't really have a choice you can't just go quarterback run and try
14:00to come out of a hole and and they were just trying to dig out that entire time okay so
14:04there we get
14:05to it i don't know how long we've been on here 10 minutes or so here here's the truth fellas
14:09okay
14:10people don't want to hear this necessarily but you were limited in using avery in the quarterback run
14:16game because the truth is you had one other quarterback one yeah that was available and he
14:22frankly wasn't healthy enough really to do much i didn't think about that that's that's the truth
14:27um again is it an excuse probably but i think you have to be honest with people and and say
14:36that
14:36that's what it was so you did have to be you know pretty careful there um and and i don't
14:44know if you
14:45will agree with this or not and i again i don't want to get into whining about losing right but
14:50i did
14:51not think it was the world's best officiated game there was some late hitting and some
14:57malarkey i'll say that that probably should have been cleaned up by the officials early on and
15:01wasn't so there's my griping of that uh we'll get it on and now off the table because i hate
15:06doing it
15:07stan and i even talked about that three plays in a row there at one point the other night that
15:11here we
15:11are criticizing the officials and you don't and we don't like to do that but you also have to be
15:17fair
15:17in the reporting of it and um it you know it was just a frustrating night and you got to
15:23get better
15:24um you again talk about you have control over some things and not others that that's you can't control
15:32the officiating that's either that's either pretty damn good or it's pretty ordinary or it's below
15:37average right or somewhere in that that scale and i just thought it was a little on the weak side
15:42yeah brady brady allow me to do my best uh wyatt glass half full thompson impression here because
15:48i'm going to take the words out of his mouth uh and he's going to say that it's not time
15:53to panic
15:53right it's only one big 12 loss i'll be at oh and one to start but they do have a
15:58favorable schedule
15:59uh and the big 12 is going to beat up on each other they can still find themselves where they
16:03want
16:03to be is that what you were going to say well all of that is accurate yeah right it doesn't
16:07take away
16:08the sting from the loss and here you have to be honest with everybody i've you know i've learned
16:13this it's you're better off telling it truthfully or as howard cosell once said telling it like it is
16:19right this this law sucked right it sucked because i think it showed that k-state does have you know
16:28some things that they need to get better at and maybe we saw a little bit of a glimpse of
16:32it with
16:33two lane with the outside zone rushing right that's probably a truthful statement um but but
16:40yeah if you can get it cleaned up some this is still a football team if they can get a
16:45little bit
16:46more healthy and win some hard games you know to get where they want to get you're going to have
16:51to
16:52beat a top 25 team in houston you know everybody thought we were going to waltz in late in the
16:58year
16:58and beat iowa state because they were going to be terrible you know what i got news for you they're
17:02not they're not terrible the kuk state game here do you think it'll be a fight i'm going to guess
17:08at least in the beginning they're going to come in here and fight you right we go to arizona state
17:13we've got oklahoma state here that will not be easy they just won at west virginia so i guess you
17:20can look at it a thousand different ways but again that glass half full thing we have opportunities
17:26and this is not the first time we've lost on the road to start big 12 play we did it
17:31one year
17:31not that many years ago and won the league so it can be done it can be the question is
17:38is are we
17:38good enough to go do that that is the question we'll be finding out and uh why thompson your voice
17:44of the cats with us just a little bit time maybe about a minute left why i do want to
17:48ask you uh coach
17:49klein how do you think he's going to handle this uh first loss and and going into the bye week
17:53real
17:54quick well i i've i've known for a long long time sir and i'm as being as respectful as possible
18:00if there's anybody that i've known in my 50-year broadcast career that hates losing any more than
18:05colin i want you to show it to me because i don't i he is a competitive cat now uh
18:11i got that
18:12he took this hard and he's going to try to do what he can to fix it simply stated all
18:17right yeah
18:18well appreciate it as always
