00:46like exhale and celebration all at the same time after how bad last season went and and even going
00:53back to the end of last year losing the Super Bowl uh to the Eagles the way they lost that

00:58to the Eagles and how last year went it just felt like a a collective exhale and also just jubilation
01:06that we're back and everything that we hoped would work out as far as the way things were looking to
01:12work out over the offseason at least for game one it's a long season it's game one but it all

01:19out almost to a tee that that's one thing that we might have talked about this at some point in

01:25last couple weeks or even during the offseason something I've thought a lot about um over these
01:30last couple of months I I don't think I ever really had a an obvious metric of what success for
01:38the
01:38Chiefs looks like this season or even in week one you know they win 14 games fantastic that's a success
01:44for any team by any metric but like what is what's the lowest thing you would accept as a good
01:49year
01:49for the Chiefs coming into this season before the game last night and one of the common threads that
01:53I kept hearing from other people and kept thinking for myself was the the idea that you get a little
01:58bit of that Chiefs mystique or the inevitability or the oh not these bleeping guys again and that came
02:07back last night in a different form than we've ever seen it for this this Patrick Mahomes Andy Reid version

02:13of this Chiefs team you know you had some Kareem Hunt years early on I guess year and change whatever
02:18it would have been um you had times when the running game was a real part of of the weaponry
02:23and you had
02:23great times with Damian Williams and Jarek McKinnon and Isaiah Pacheco for for when he was healthy
02:28Clyde had a stretch you know you've had times when you've been able to look at the Chiefs offense and
02:32say hey there's some balance here there's real talent in the backfield these last couple of years were
02:37really an outlier in terms of how hard everything seemed in terms of the ground game what the Chiefs did
02:42last night to your point Brady I I think last night was a what had to be a staggering blow
02:51to a lot of teams and a lot of fans around the league that that went to bed last night
02:57looking at
02:57their ceiling going it's the freaking Chiefs again like I thought we I thought we vanquished these guys
03:03Mahomes Torres ACL this is a bare minimum it should never look easy for the Chiefs in what feels a

03:10bit like a rebuilding retooling year depending on your perspective and you bring in Kenneth Walker
03:17and he just has for anybody a career game in his first game as a Chief there are a lot
03:23of things
03:24that they we talk about the passing game we can also talk about some things that they did well that
03:28enabled that performance last night but it it really did feel like a a huge alarm to the rest of
03:35the league that the Chiefs appear to still have a little bit of that Chiefs magic and it came back
03:39right out of the gate this season we could see it I mean look it was we it was predictive
03:43we could
03:44predict that Walker was a good fit with this offensive line it happened it will break off
03:49it long runs it will be like when Derek Henry is battering a team for three quarters and then all
03:55of a sudden in the fourth defense is like that's always been the upside I don't know if you saw
04:00and
04:01this wasn't a run play but on Travis Kelsey's long reception I don't know if you were watching
04:05Rasheed Rice on that play everybody everybody is buying in and may and and one of our listeners
04:14made a great point in the first hour maybe this is an EB reflection could be but everybody is bought
04:22in and the television broadcast Mahomes looked over to the sideline and basically said stop throwing
04:26the ball let's just keep running it that's running everybody's bought into this including the receivers
04:31who are blocking well we knew the offensive line was going to block this up if they buy into that
04:38and their defense really is that good out of the gates here we go they're cooking now the defense
04:45that good with about what three snaps from on sort of lane by the way we can come back around
04:49to that
04:49but I mean holy smokes what an effort um the the Rasheed Rice point absolutely I I would agree with
04:54your your your caller commenter listener um give Eric Biennemi credit give Chad O'Shea credit
05:00for the running back room give DeMarco Murray credit now obviously he's got two different backs
05:04back there than we're we're with the the version of the team last season but that was one of the
05:09things where you're right like we we the the the fit made hypothetical sense for Kenneth Walker
05:14the interior of this offensive line is so good and we thought the tackle group was going to be a
05:20little bit different than what we saw last night and tip your hat to Kula Benson again I think they
05:23were trying to make sure that Kula Benson didn't live his life on an island in a drop back passing

05:27over and over and over last night and it worked out for everyone that way um I think everybody
05:32deserves credit at every level offense and defense special teams had their issues but like Matt
05:36Ariza had a hell of a game I mean you really can you can you could scroll through the roster
05:40and pick
05:4150 guys to to tip your hat to but I think the coaching staff deserves a ton of credit for
05:46actually
05:48adapting what we talked about with Kenneth Walker in the offseason stick with me here but like
05:52sometimes you'll you'll read a book and you'll love the book and then you hear the movies coming out in
05:56a
05:56couple years and you're so excited for the movie adaptation of this book that you loved and then it
06:01comes out and they didn't get the casting right the dialogue doesn't quite work on the big screen
06:06you go okay well this is hugely disappointing I think with the Chiefs and Kenneth Walker the the book
06:12was good the idea the base text was always right there it always made sense for this team to go

06:18center more to run a little bit of a more power-based run game with Eric Biennemi back with the
06:23new
06:23assistants I already mentioned in O'Shea and Murray it made sense it should have worked as a movie but
06:28was it actually going to be good when the season started and then you get I don't know Project Hail
06:34Mary last night no pun intended but it's like oh okay so this book that everybody loved is also a
06:38great
06:39movie everybody's cooking now I mean it was a a beautiful proof of concept last night Josh that thank
06:46you for reminding me I still need to see Project Hail Mary it's very good I've heard it's fantastic
06:50uh so I need to do that let's talk a little bit about the the Broncos side of this because

06:57is it's not like the Chiefs did this on Monday night in week one against like the Browns or somebody
07:02like that this was a team in Denver that everybody thought uh should have probably been in the Super
07:07Bowl if Bo Nix was healthy in the AFC championship game and Drew Brees' wrist didn't hurt apparently
07:13right I don't know if you guys talked about that or not yeah yeah we yeah we did actually last

07:17wild so this is a very respected Broncos team coming in with a a lot of expectations going into
07:25uh this year and Bo Nix just looked extremely extremely uncomfortable kind of reminded me a
07:32little bit of uh Drake May last Wednesday night just very unsure really pressing trying to force
07:38some things just kind of feeling a little loss out there um from time to time and uh the Chiefs
07:43taking advantage uh you know with Kenneth Walker uh the Broncos defense very good last year the
07:49Chiefs had no no problems but you know with the Chiefs defense they really made Bo Nix uh scramble
07:56quite a bit and and scratch his head quite a bit yeah he never looked comfortable he couldn't do
08:00anything under pressure I think this is a a hat tip to Steve Spagnuolo once again where you get Davis
08:07Webb who's who's sort of this rising offensive mind his first year as the offensive coordinator his first
08:12game calling plays maybe his last game calling plays I jest but barely let's see let's see what's
08:17happening in week 12 let's see if Sean Payton wants those keys back uh depending on how the season
08:20goes the rest of the way but it looked like even with all the credit in the world to Davis
08:24Webb who
08:24like Mahomes has spoken highly of and Spag spoke highly of last week that looked like Steve Spagnuolo
08:30one-off game plan specialized week one opener against a first-time play caller and the Broncos were
08:37betting on Davis Webb never looking like a first-time play caller they were betting on their
08:40infrastructure Jalen Waddell was a non-factor in this game Courtland Sutton who you know gave
08:46Trent McDuffie so many problems in in years past and again a Broncos team on both sides of the ball
08:52that is supposed to be so much better than what we saw last night to your point it it would
08:59have been
09:00this would have been an exciting game against a lesser team against a worse opponent with with fewer
09:05expectations behind them this year the Broncos went to the AFC championship game dealing with
09:10the quarterback injury traded for Jalen Waddell and said okay let's do it for real this time
09:15I mean this does give me some joy there are very few uh sports allegiances that I still hold like
09:22hate in my heart for weirdly it's the Boston Red Sox and the Denver Broncos but the idea that there
09:27are Broncos fans just sort of like walking like zombies around work today going oh no last year was our
09:33shot maybe is it over is it it's only been one week is it over that does maybe this makes
09:38me
09:38hateful oh it does fill me with joy it is such a nice thing to think about the Broncos back
09:42in the
09:43building today preparing on a short week over there as well thinking what are we gonna do and then when
09:49are they gonna pay Bo Nix like is that still gonna be in the cards their schedule is awful it
09:54by the
09:54way not that we're not talking about the Chargers a team that couldn't beat a terrible team that we all
09:58thought coming into the season in the Arizona Cardinals the Broncos and Chargers could end up
10:03with brutal starts to the year and the Chiefs need to handle business next week I'm not calling that a
10:09foregone conclusion not because I don't think the Colts are anything special but huge emotional win
10:13week one you got to come back and do it again six days later but if the Chiefs get off
10:17to the start
10:18it looks like they might get off to now the AFC West might be a completely different ball of wax

10:24we thought it was going to be a week ago yeah and those schedules will even out I do think
10:28the Colts
10:29are interesting because they'll probably be one of the better running teams in football we assumed
10:35and maybe it still ends up this way Denver ends up one of the better passing offenses but as we
10:40look
10:41at that defensive side and spags why does anybody ever doubt him at this point in his career I guess
10:47it doesn't matter but the defensive line even as he's been good it hasn't had the best pass rushes
10:52and that defensive line had pressure almost every play Felix and you DK Uzama look good obviously
10:59our Mason Thomas look good but if they can get a little juice in that pass rush again these are
11:07things you couldn't really count on and and I don't even know if the pass rush people were even
11:11really quick we were hopeful for the run game was anybody really hopeful that they could be a really
11:16top end pass rush this year I I was excited to see it which is slightly different than expecting it
11:23to
11:23happen right right like I was really excited to see what our Mason Thomas looked like in his first
11:28NFL game outside of the preseason when he looked explosive and like he could be one of those guys
11:32here's here's the thing about the pass rush and even mentioning spags last year the Chiefs had a
11:37terrible time getting off the field on third down and they had to blitz a lot and they weren't that
11:42effective when they blitzed because they just never got home with four it was just not something
11:47this defense really had the the horses for well last night if I asked 20 Chiefs fans or 20 people
11:54who watched the game who was the Chiefs best pass rusher last night I think you could probably get
11:59three or four maybe five different answers you get a couple of plays you know like the the pass batted
12:05out by Nick Bolton that then uh George Karloffis flattens Bo Nix on a really excellent just like
12:10hard-nosed football play punishing the quarterback both of those guys in Bolton had a couple of
12:15blitzes that worked really well Karloffis made some impact but he wasn't like a takeover game
12:19Chris Jones was relatively quiet and I don't think that's because he just got one-on-one matchups
12:24he couldn't win I'm gonna have to go re-watch the game later today but I assume the Broncos were
12:28keying in on Chris Jones and saying okay well can somebody else beat us well a couple plays it was
12:32Peter Woods with a hurry or a batted pass a couple plays it was our Mason Thomas getting to the
12:36first play of the game it was Noel Williams on a blitz you Kyrus Tonga taking up the space that
12:41he does in that defense there was not a standout star of the Chiefs defense last night and I think
12:48that's a great thing because for the first time in quite a while the pass rush plan is something
12:54other than blitz like your hair is on fire or pray Chris Jones gets it done by himself or that
13:01then maybe Karloffis can clean up or Ashton Jelotti can clean up what you saw last night was a bunch
13:07of
13:08players winning a rep here or there and the Broncos never got settled that to me again I think Walker
13:15is like obviously the most fun takeaway here by a mile but the thing that has always been on my
13:20radar
13:20of hey is is this if the Chiefs are significantly better on on defense than we thought they were going
13:27to be I feel pretty good about the secondary or at least the cornerback room if Delane is is healthy
13:33I guess obviously now is the big asterisk there but I thought that made sense Monterey Landon
13:37Williams and the combo of Sneed or Chris Roland Wallace or Jaden Kennedy or you know back in training
13:42camp Kate or Kohu whoever someone's going to win the slot job I like the outside guys when they're out
13:47there Christian Fulton played pretty well last night really forced into a much larger role than I was
13:51expecting because of Delane's injury but if they can get there with four it doesn't have to be the
13:56same guy winning every rep in fact I kind of prefer that it's not as long as somebody is affecting
14:00the
14:00quarterback and they just did that so consistently last night Josh real quick I'm not sure where
14:07exactly uh your suite's at I don't know if you were a couple rows behind Taylor Swift and Tom
14:13Cruz or if you're just off to the side did you get a Tom Cruz uh autograph or a picture
14:18or anything
14:19like that so here's the analogy I've used I'm like the astronaut that you know when they went to the
14:24moon I'm the astronaut who had to stay on the spaceship while the other guys go walk so I am
14:30in the radio studio in in the Kansas City metro area while Mitch and Dana are in the booth clings
14:37down there on the field so they're doing the actual moon walk and I'm uh I'm I'm back in the
14:43control
14:43room maybe I'm not even on you know what I might not be on the spaceship I might just be
14:47in Houston you
14:47know um but either way I uh I did enjoy I enjoyed the the stars coming out uh pun intended
14:54for uh
14:54for an incredible way to open the season and uh by the way quick shout out Andy Reid fourth down
14:59aggression this game's totally different if they don't go for it on fourth down two times once it
15:02was the first down that led to a touchdown another time home run hit from Kenneth Walker I know we've
15:06talked about fourth down aggression in the past I'm mentioning it now while it's hot and while it's
15:10exciting because we'll file it away and if it doesn't work still you know point to the fact
15:15remember this like I I agree with you especially if they're gonna run the ball one final thing Josh
15:19uh in the last two minutes or so it was not pretty for Mahomes through the air for most of
15:26the game
15:26yep we don't know what that's gonna look like I don't know how much better it's gonna be
15:31are we to any are we in any way concerned about the passing attack coming out of that game
15:38Mahomes no passing attack yes um I Patrick Mahomes I tweeted that he like looked like Patrick Mahomes
15:44and lots of people were like no he doesn't well pardon me I meant running for a touchdown and
15:49running for a first down he looks confident he's willing to make plays with his legs but
15:54the wide receivers combining for 37 total yards is not ideal that's not how you want to build the
15:59offense the rest of the way um so I I do think there's a little bit of that I think
16:03that there
16:03was some protecting of Khalil Benson and obviously being able to run the ball that successfully you can
16:08get away with that game plan a little bit they need better days from the wide receivers in terms of
16:12getting separation they're gonna eventually need to be able to drop back and pass it but if they
16:16want to win four or five games like this first I wouldn't bother me any they will as this goes
16:22until
16:22somebody stops them yep this is the way they're gonna go I mean it's and it's it's been so obvious
16:28to all of us that this could work so well and to see it work so well as man that's
16:33fulfilling
16:34that Rasheed Rice touchdown was pretty sweet though it wasn't for many yards but that was incredible
16:39like that just showed me again that everybody's just going a million miles now like everybody's
16:44bought in and playing extremely tough and just daring the defense to stop me there were there
16:50are explosions in different ways and in different places than we've seen as of late and I think that
16:56is extraordinarily exciting if you want to get excited about Rice watch him block on that long
17:01Kelsey I'm telling you block that dude for 40 yards it's one of the better reps of his career not
17:07just blocks reps I really agree with that like a left tackle out there just picking a guy up and
17:13not letting him go it was it was great it was a great performance um Kenneth Walker's the real deal
17:19man it's it seems like a good fit and he'll break him off and Emmitt Johnson in our final seconds
