00:23on a tuesday um we're gonna have to settle for that with our weekly tuesday visits coming up
00:29this season but i appreciate it hell maybe i'll join in and we'll go hawaiian shirt tuesdays and
00:34wednesdays lord knows i have plenty um it's not just it's not just a day of a week you know

00:40a lifestyle and and if i if i could in good conscience tell you that i put on this hawaiian
00:47shirt today because i thought you know what let's just fudge a hawaiian shirt wednesday on a tuesday
00:51i'd tell you i did but i i didn't i wake up not literally in this one but i sometimes

00:57in a hawaiian shirt sometimes i go to bed in a hawaiian shirt certainly the hours i'm awake i'm

01:43not in the fun way though i'm i'm honestly i'll be perfectly honest kind of pissed i never got
01:48propositioned all the weird all the years i wore that shirt and i'm like once i found out i was

01:53in horror and then i was like well wait a minute you kind of offended constantly like why how am

01:59only now finding this out that should have been something i found out right away uh we bring in

02:24i i and i mean this in the most positive way possible kind of an uneventful uh you know training
02:33camp into preseason for the chiefs only because it means they've avoided the big one knock on wood
02:39faults don't find it they've they've avoided the big one here you're right and i think there's a
02:45good distinction to make about uneventful from the outside versus all of the preparation that they
02:51need from the inside yeah we haven't needed to see or hear a whole lot obviously like we're plugged in
02:57on a sicko level i mean i know things that happened in practices that um you know it will never
03:02in any
03:03way become useful in a week from now it'll you know these my jeff caldwell fun facts are all
03:07unfortunately water under the bridge as he's they waved him yesterday most of your listeners might not
03:13really know who jeff caldwell is so that that's something that happens throughout a ton of training
03:17camp but you're right and especially through the preseason there have been lots of fun things there
03:21have been lots of good developments and i'm sure we'll talk about like r mason thomas and felix
03:25new dk uzama guys who will matter when week one gets here but like one of the most fun stories

03:31the preseason has been garrett nussmeyer and none of us really want to see garrett nussmeyer at any
03:36point in the regular season unless they've got it wrapped up by week 18.
03:39there are good blips for jaylen royals and not you know lots of things from cyrus allen and training
03:44camp but to your point every single team in the league has some younger wide receiver who has caught
03:52the eyes of fans and coaches in training camp and then it's just a question of where are they when
03:57the season actually begins so yeah the ashton gelati injury obviously sounds horrific the phrase
04:04ruptured plantar fascia is really alarming um but it seems like there is a very reasonable path for
04:10that to heal up on its own and for him to be pretty much himself week one week two whenever
04:14that arrives
04:15so no huge injuries and i guess it would be a huge story if patrick mahomes started practicing partway
04:21through training camp but he was so far ahead of schedule you pretty much put a bow on that one
04:25by day
04:26one yeah for sure we are actually just talking about that uh just a little bit ago like how would
04:32we feel
04:32if there was more unknown with mahomes at this point with what it's like maybe we do want to see
04:38maybe a series or two but he's like all indications are things have been pretty fine so it doesn't feel
04:43like there's that that need we're also talking um josh about the defense and how hard it is to kind
04:50of evaluate who's standing out on defense sometimes during the preseason um for me you mentioned felix uh
04:57for me uh jayden hicks in the last couple of games has kind of caught my eye as far as
05:03the motor he's bringing uh the hits what he just totally just planted browning there at one point
05:13in the game uh what about you who's who's also maybe been catching your eye even though it's kind
05:18of hard to evaluate defense on the preseason it is and that's just it's another factor to kind of add
05:24to the analysis so like with jayden hicks you're right he's looked like the best player on the
05:28field a lot of the times he's been on the field he's also largely been on the field with second
05:32and third stringers both around him and going up against him so that's still what you want to see
05:36right if you are a guy that's going to be in the safety rotation you'd better look like the standout
05:42player against kind of these these lower level future practice squad players that you're playing
05:47with and against it it just makes it more difficult to kind of to weed out the noise of it
05:53all
05:53one of the things though that i do think you can often look at that is not quite as noisy
05:57is just do you see some of the traits translating for a player like the one that i'll highlight here
06:03are mason thomas you saw him at oklahoma you you knew in the scouting report that there was going to
06:09be this explosiveness the speed the ability to bend at the top of the edge you want to talk about
06:14like
06:14ankle flexion that's something the chiefs haven't really had in a pass rusher since maybe
06:18d ford um there might be a couple here and there where they've tried on a player
06:22like that but never really came to fruition well for our mason thomas you can't prove that you are
06:27d ford like obviously that ended poorly for him in kansas city he was a really useful pass rusher
06:33you can't prove that you're going to be a 10-year starter into preseason games but you can show me
06:39that those traits that we drafted you for are showing up at each checkpoint along the way it's
06:44going to be different for him in week one against the broncos than it was in the first two weeks
06:48of
06:48the preseason but if you continue to pass each of those tests you stand out a little bit in training
06:53camp you have good reps against the likes of josh simmons you take it to the preseason and again you
06:59stand out as clearly one of the most dynamic players on the field sometimes in the preseason and i don't
07:05really think this is necessarily true for like peter woods even though he's had a quieter preseason
07:09than he had a camp sometimes you get to the preseason and one of your first second third round picks
07:14goes out there and doesn't separate themselves they don't stand out from the pack and you start
07:19to go okay well maybe he's going to be a little bit of a late bloomer maybe he needs a
07:23little bit
07:23of time the inverse has happened for our mason thomas and in a very small sample size i think
07:28monsoor delane looked like a different speed of player for the very brief window we got of him last
07:34weekend um i love seeing what we've seen from thomas so far because it was a little bit outside of
07:39character for the chiefs to bring in that kind of pass rusher again they haven't had under spags in quite
07:43some time but being able to see those tools start to assert themselves makes me really excited for
07:49what he'll do in the regular season they're going to not have much time to acclimate that defense i
07:54hate defense in the preseason we don't see anything out of defenses in the preseason we just have to
08:00guess i want to look at the other side of the ball though we have talked really going back to
08:05last
08:05year and certainly into the offseason the chiefs need and desire to run the ball they've spent the money
08:10there they've drafted the offensive line there they had the injury to mahomes the one thing in
08:16on the offense that i would like to see a little more of in the preseason i don't think we're
08:20going
08:21to like we're not seeing fields maybe line up under center as much as i'd like to hope that mahomes
08:29does
08:29i mean the numbers for ken walker out of you know under center formations versus the shotgun are pretty
08:37staggering we're seeing mahomes do a little bit of it in practice do you get the sense that when
08:43it is mahomes and that line and ken walker uh three weeks from yesterday that we're going to
08:50see more of that i do think they're going to run the ball now i'm kind of like well i
08:54hope they don't
08:55just run it out of the shotgun though because they've got this player they spent all this money
08:59on who hasn't done that very well over his career i i think there's a little bit of both i
09:04do think
09:05they will run an under center more than we've seen them do in recent years across the board i think
09:10i
09:10think walker is going to push them that way and i think the evolution of the nfl right now is
09:14kind
09:14of pushing them that way that's something that a lot of teams have found more success in now that
09:18doesn't mean that you can just run what the rams do and run 13 personnel you got to have three
09:22tight
09:22ends that you like on the field if you're if you're trying to to push that kind of physicality
09:27with extra bodies out there but i do think that the under center thing is a real evolution that's
09:31coming i don't think it's going to be 80 of their run plays but i think it's going to be
09:35enough that
09:36you see you see that as a potential fastball for what kenneth walker can do and then i do think
09:41they
09:41are still betting on him being better out of the shotgun than he even was in seattle i think they're
09:46going to use him more in the passing game than the seahawks did and really all across the board this
09:50is
09:51hugely about walker but it's not all about him because i think that entire running back room is in a
09:56pretty cool spot right now i i don't think amari de mercado i know he's played late in both
10:00preseason games i don't think he's in any real roster danger because he's the best pass protector
10:05on the roster and if you're running the media yesterday if that's any yes yes that too if you
10:10talk to the median training camp you got a lot of days to fill you talk to the media once
10:13you get
10:13back to kansas city i think you're probably on the roster uh but the other the other indication
10:17is that i don't want emmett johnson out there being the last line of defense between nick
10:22benito and patrick mahomes his knee you know like that might come for him at johnson i think he'll be
10:27a
10:27a willing pass protector but he's not an experienced one right now so there's really kind of like four
10:32different speeds of running back not not literally i guess but four different flavors of running back
10:37in that room there and um i think that they have every like every opportunity to take advantage of
10:43that um in this kind of small evolution for the chiefs offense again eric b and him he's not
10:48obviously he's not coming from a a different school of offensive coordinating he's he's coming back
10:54home so to speak but i i do think that they are going to push more in that direction there
10:58will be
10:59more under center and i it's taken a while for me to fully get here because we've seen so little
11:04of
11:05walker in the preseason you can judge so little about the running game and training camp but i am
11:10really really excited to see what he adds to this offense because for all the conversations we've had
11:14about the pass catchers about wanting to have more depth at receiver and then even getting excited
11:19about cyrus allen and all of that the biggest addition they made this offseason on the offensive
11:22side of the ball by a mile was kenneth walker and i i don't think they're gonna forget that when
11:27week
11:27one shows up you know we've been talking a lot on this show about uh justin fields and you know
11:33obviously his gifts and and so many of the things that he can do really well uh at his position
11:39that
11:39not many can do as far as the total toolbox do you see uh like we kind of feel like
11:46we see justin
11:47fields still maybe being thrown in some formations every once in a while and trying to use him or do
11:52you
11:52think once a regular season starts we never see him it's it's a good question that i've been asked
11:57other times this offseason and i haven't given myself an answer that i'm happy with because i'm
12:01really of two minds on one hand he is a like really unique athlete and andy reed is not only
12:07not afraid i think he's always hearing the siren song but what if i do something weird you know what
12:12if there's a little a little cute trick play in the red zone where something strange happens
12:16and so i that part of me that's you know that's the angel maybe that's the devil on my shoulder
12:20that well andy reed loves doing some weird tricky stuff and justin fields can do some weird tricky
12:24stuff the other thing on my shoulder you can decide if it's good or bad i guess is that i
12:28don't think
12:29andy reed is going to take patrick mahomes off the field now he doesn't have to you can just have
12:33mahomes there also they can both be in the backfield mahomes can jog out to the slot or whatever go
12:38really wide and just try to take a defender with them on one hand it would not surprise me if
12:44patrick
12:44mahomes catches a touchdown from justin fields this year and on the other hand it wouldn't really
12:48surprise me if we're talking in december and going so are we going to see justin fields in the
12:53playoffs are we going to see him you know for a little wildcat formation at some point i i do
12:59still
12:59think you know if mahomes were to miss time and obviously they didn't know exactly the recovery
13:04timeline when they when they acquired justin fields i think the offense would look different if he was
13:08qb1 for a game or two uh than it does with mahomes or even than it might with garrett nussmeyer

13:13i've been impressed with but i don't think he's ahead of fields right now just in terms of what
13:16they're going to ask him to do but i i hope i think because i do love weird football i
13:22hope we
13:23get a little bit of that from fields every once in a while it could it could be the first

13:28against the broncos and it could not be until the playoffs i know that's a terribly unhelpful answer
13:34but the truth is i would not be surprised at either extreme i i think i think that that the
13:39last thing

14:12let me see injuries in here am i am i supposed to see injuries in here to consider all factors

14:19i'm going to give you the boring answer that no one's going to be excited about probably but my
14:23crystal ball right now it's a little fuzzy but i'm seeing three healthy players and i'm seeing
14:29rishi rice he's definitely there i'm seeing that's xavier worthy no question and starting the game
14:35i'm seeing taekwon thornton okay i cyrus allen's gonna be involved at some point him playing a little
14:41later into the preseason makes me think we're still in a rep acquisition period for him and i think that
14:48if if what really any of those guys but kind of especially rice it were to miss actual time i
14:54do think
14:54you could see cyrus allen jumping into that rotation a little bit the thing is i don't for
15:00what they're going to be asked to do i don't think that cyrus allen quote unquote leaps taekwon
15:07thornton in a schematic sense because taekwon thornton's job is to go that way is to take it down the
15:13field
15:14and to bring that vertical speed xavier worthy can do that deep and intermediate and and again you know
15:19this my connection on the crystal ball is i don't have wi-fi on it someone's gonna get hurt
15:24there there will be a wide receiver injury between weeks one and 12 right so at some point i do
15:29think
15:30cyrus allen will be the first guy that kind of gets the call up there but i really do still
15:34think
15:34that the top three that entered this this offseason are still going to be the top three
15:38and you'll be thrilled if you have four or even five receivers who kind of demand playing time
15:44that that would be a gift they've got a big tight end that's going to demand the ball too
15:48yes i mean let's not for jake brinningstool yeah oh you meant the other guy yeah yeah the other guy
15:53the other guy you know you opened up talking about uh nussmeyer and you mentioned him again
15:59boy josh you think there's a lot of teams that are looking at nussmeyer this preseason thinking
16:04like ah maybe we should have drafted him a little higher i i was shocked that he was there at
16:09pick
16:09249 or wherever the chiefs got him he was the 10th to last pick of the draft he was the
16:13last
16:14quarterback taken when carson beck went to the cardinals in the third round i think i remember
16:19having a conversation with some of the kcsn guys who do all of the draft coverage thing and that
16:23like you could have swapped carson beck and garrett nussmeyer in the draft and it wouldn't i wouldn't
16:28have batted an eye it wouldn't have shocked me for nussmeyer to have been a third round pick and
16:32yeah i just i wrote a piece over on uh chiefs on si a day or two ago that not
16:38only do i think nussmeyer
16:39has shown you enough that that you'd like to keep him on your roster i think he's shown the league
16:43too much at this point to believe that you could sneak him to your practice squad i don't think he's
16:47clear in waivers this league never has enough quarterbacks joe flacco right now at age 41 is
16:53making six million dollars to back up joe burrow the bengals have a quarterback say what you want
16:57about the bengals say what you want about joe burrow but joe burrow is not the problem in
17:00cincinnati the rams draft a first round quarterback to try to avoid the quarterback carousel in a year
17:06or two when matt stafford retires and then you have teams like the browns and currently the falcons and
17:11really like a third of the league that's just in quarterback hell to purgatory or somewhere in between
17:17so i i really was surprised that nussmeyer fell as far as he did he's not just like some random
17:23guy
17:23that had a nice senior year at a small school that then you take a shot on in the seventh
17:28round
17:28he was a first round pick being mocked as a first round pick during his junior year i guess it
17:35was
17:35it might have been his fourth year but you know if he would have left a year prior partway through
17:38that
17:38season mid first high first round pick that kind of pedigree that you find from guys that end up the
17:43sam darnolds or mac joneses or right now kyler murray baker mayfield guys that are highly drafted
17:49and then struggle at the nfl level and then kind of have a second act it feels like we're kind
17:53of
17:53the chiefs bought incredibly low on garrett nussmeyer and it feels like his second act could just be
17:58starting as being a seventh round pick so yeah i've i've been really impressed by him again i'll
18:03say this because i know a lot of people want to see him keep climbing the depth chart i think
18:07it's
18:07justin fields right now and i think that's for a reason i i think that you have a veteran who's
18:11been in the league for a while i'd be surprised if fields ended up jumping him and if nussmeyer
18:16ended up jumping fields in the depth chart but i'd also be at this point surprised and honestly
18:20i'd be disappointed if the chiefs didn't make room for him on the 53 because i i don't think he's
18:25making making the practice squad i think somebody else would love to have garrett nussmeyer join their
18:29quarterback room and for the chiefs then if he's just your backup for my homes the next several years
18:33on a super cheap contract you've won the draft pick if somebody sees him in the preseason in a year
18:38or two and they go you know what we might we might trade you a pick for garrett nussmeyer then
18:42you've hit a jackpot turning a seventh into a third or whatever it might be so uh yeah i've i've
