00:30A 43-year-old Swiss man was arrested on strong suspicion of being behind a rare deadly gun attack at
00:37a rave in Switzerland.
00:41Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has blamed Russia, Israel and the international far-right for the spreading of disinformation that
00:50led to the Ceuta migrant surge in July.
00:52He also said an investigation into what caused the mass influx of at least 72,000 migrants to the enclave
00:59of Ceuta is still ongoing.
01:02In an interview with Spanish Radio, he claimed that rumors and disinformation were spread on social media in order to
01:09attack Spain as well as Europe in order to divide it.
01:13Sanchez also ruled out any responsibility on the part of the Moroccan authorities in the mass migrant crossing into Ceuta.
01:20Meanwhile, the Spanish government plans to allocate 165 million euros to Ceuta's recovery.
01:28The emergency package of measures is set to be approved by the Council of Ministers on Tuesday.
01:34Spain's government says most migrants have since left the enclave, but thousands remain wandering the streets and sleeping on beaches.
01:42Demonstrations have intensified in recent days, with some protesters clashing with police on Thursday.
01:53Italy's government announced a 15-day extension to the suspension of the Schengen agreement with Spain after the mass influx
02:02of at least 72,000 migrants from Morocco entered the Spanish territory of Ceuta in July.
02:09Border checks for travellers arriving from Spain were due to expire on August the 31st, but in recent days, Rome
02:17had explained that the situation in the Spanish enclave remains critical with between 5,000 to 10,000 irregular migrants
02:26still in the city causing serious tensions with locals.
02:30Italy had reiterated that there is no desire for a clash with Madrid and that the Czechs have concerned only
02:37third-country nationals with no impact on Italians, Spaniards or other Europeans.
02:43In recent days, Spain's Foreign Minister Manuel Alvarez has described the Italian government's move as unjustified and an affront to
02:52the dignity of Spaniards, motivated solely by electoral considerations.
03:04The European Commission has designated ChatGPT as a very large online search engine and Reddit and Roblox as very large
03:12online platforms under the Digital Services Act or DSA.
03:16With this decision, the three companies are subjecting to the bloc's strictest online safety regime.
03:23The designation will prove particularly consequential for ChatGPT because the Commission has concluded that an AI chatbot that pulls live
03:33results from the Internet functions as a search engine, not merely a platform.
03:39Reddit and Roblox have been designated as very large online platforms as both allow users to create and share content
03:47publicly.
03:47Under the DSA, online services that reach more than 45 million monthly users in the EU are classified as either
03:56very large online platforms or very large online search engines.
04:00The three services now have four months to comply with a series of obligations, including annual systemic risk assessments covering
04:10illegal content, the protection of minors, effects on users' mental and physical well-being and public security.
04:17They must also submit to independent audits and share data with regulators and vetted researchers.
04:25Non-compliance can attract penalties of up to 6% of a company's global annual turnover.
04:37Rescuers were still searching for survivors on Monday, one day after a ferry capsized off the northern coast of Cyprus.
04:45The ferry left the northern port of Kairinia around midday on Sunday and was set to travel to Turkey but
04:51capsized shortly afterwards.
04:53There had been 267 people on board of the boat.
04:58Out of that number, 241 people were rescued, 8 died and 18 were listed as missing.
05:05Several survivors told local media they heard a blast shortly before the vessel rolled.
05:10Some passengers also said the boat had begun taking on water before it capsized.
05:16Early on Monday, the captain and eight others were brought before a judge where they were placed under formal arrest.
05:22The ferry is currently lying at a depth of 514 meters.
05:26Local authorities said that recovering the vessel's black box will help understand what caused the tragedy.
05:37A 43-year-old Swiss man was arrested on Monday on strong suspicion of being behind a rare deadly gun
05:44attack at a rave in Switzerland.
05:47Police said that investigations into a possible motive are ongoing and that at present they believe the shooting was carried
05:53out by a lone perpetrator.
05:56Gunfire erupted in the early hours of Sunday morning as an annual rave was winding down at the racecourse in
06:02the town of Arau.
06:04The attack triggered an international manhunt for the shooter, who left an Italian woman dead and wounded five others, some
06:11seriously.
06:13Authorities were alerted around 2.30am local time to the shooting and later took the remaining visitors to a nearby
06:19gym where many were interrogated.
06:23Authorities urged people to stay away from the area and asked for video recordings or photos from the rave to
06:29use in their investigation.
06:35Algerian President Abdelmajid Taboun has ordered changes to the criminal code, saying he intends to reinstate the death penalty for
06:43arsonists after deadly wildfires.
06:57The president also declared three days of national mourning after fires in northern eastern Algeria killed at least 12 people
07:04and injured dozens.
07:16He said 54 people were receiving hospital treatment for burns, including six in critical condition.
07:23Meanwhile, Algeria's civil protection agency said 46 fires remained active out of 193 recorded in the previous 24 hours.
07:32Three major highways were also closed because of fires.
07:41China, Russia and India, three of the world's biggest powers in one room here in Bishkek.
07:46Their leaders have come for the summit of the Shanghai Corporation Organization,
07:51a bloc whose 10 members speak for more than 40% of the world's population,
07:56with observer states and partner nations swelling the guest list to more than 20 countries.
08:02It began 25 years ago as a security pact.
08:05Today, it wants to be so much more.
08:07A champion of trade and connectivity and part of a push for a more multipolar world.
08:13On the table this year, security and counterterrorism,
08:16a long-promised SCO development bank,
08:18and new trade routes as the conflict strains key corridors like the Strait of Hormuz.
08:23But the real story is in the bilaterals, the one-on-one meetings on the margins.
08:29Armenia's Pashinyan and Azerbaijan's Aliyev have already sat down.
08:34The Kremlin says Putin will meet Pashinyan to discuss the future tomorrow.
08:39And all eyes are on Modi and Putin's bilateral.
08:43Against a backdrop which is very turbulent,
08:46Trump's tariffs, the fallout from the war in Iran and the war in Ukraine.
08:50Amongst those also attending is the UN Secretary-General, whose opinion could be vital.
08:56But what's happening here is crucial and matters directly for Europe.
09:01This is Toby Gregory for Euronews from Bishket.
09:09Behind the roar of the engines and the visual spectacle of each liftoff at Europe's spaceport in French Guiana,
09:16the critical division is at work whose role tends to go unnoticed,
09:20unless something goes wrong, the flight safety division.
09:23Your news spoke to one of the engineers who makes sure it all runs smoothly.
09:27The flight safety division is responsible for the protection of people from the launch onwards
09:32until the decommissioning of all the rocket parts involved in the launch.
09:35We do this by tracking the rocket with a trajectory analysis in real time
09:40and also thanks to the analysis of weather data in real time before the launch.
09:45So it goes very fast.
09:47We are trained to act very fast in a very coordinated way.
09:51So we have a simulator in which we train every week, sometimes a couple of times a week
09:58so that we have qualifications to be able to act very fast during the launch.
10:03So it is a decision that is taken among all the team
10:06and then we decide to stop the flight by the neutralization command.
10:11Very simply, we have a flight corridor that is calculated before each launch
10:15and if the rocket goes through this flight corridor, it means that it can get dangerous
10:20so we stop the flight and we interrupt the flight.
10:22So we have a flight corridor until we overfly the first countries.
10:26So then we are not above ocean anymore and so we stop the intervention possibility.
10:42Asian stocks fell on Monday as Federal Reserve boss Kevin Warsh signaled
10:46that interest rate hikes could be needed to tackle persistent inflation.
10:50At the Jackson Hole Symposium, Warsh said inflation currently at 3.7% was concerning
10:56and suggested financial conditions were not restrictive enough.
11:00However, he stopped short of committing to a rate hike.
11:03The comments pushed U.S. Treasury yields higher and lifted the dollar
11:07while all three major Wall Street indexes fell on Friday.
11:11Asian technology stocks led losses as investors assessed
11:14the impact of higher borrowing costs on AI investment.
11:18Markets are now awaiting U.S. jobs data this week
11:21and consumer price figures next week for clues on the Fed's next move.
11:26Meanwhile, oil prices jumped more than 2% after Washington said
11:31it had attacked Iranian rocket launchers near the Strait of Hormuz.
11:35The resumption of hostilities after a month of stalemate
11:38has revived concerns about the conflict and the continued closure
11:42of the Strait of Hormuz through which a fifth of global crude oil passes.
