00:01A Ukrainian national was arrested on Wednesday in Croatia on suspicion of involvement in the
00:08September 2022 explosions on the Nord Stream gas pipeline. According to German prosecutors,
00:15the person arrested is a trained scuba diver who was part of a group of individuals who planted
00:21explosives on the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2. He was strongly suspected of jointly causing
00:27explosions, anti-constitutional sabotage and destruction of buildings and structures, they added.
00:34The undersea gas pipeline was linking Russia to Germany to carry Russian natural gas under the
00:40Baltic Sea. The incident had heightened tensions over the war in Ukraine at a time when Europe
00:47was seeking to end its dependence on Russian fossil fuels. According to prosecutors, the aim of these
00:54explosions was to prevent Moscow from profiting from its energy revenues. Russia had accused
01:01the United States of being behind these explosions, an accusation denied by Washington.
01:11EU leaders have expressed their support to the International Criminal Court after the United States
01:18announced it would sanction top officials investigating Israel's actions in Gaza. In a statement,
01:24the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and Council Chief Antonio Costa said that
01:30the ICC helps deliver justice to the victims of some of the world's most horrific crimes. They added that
01:36in order to carry out this essential work, its judges and officials must be able to act independently
01:43and without external pressure. The statement came after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced
01:49that the U.S. would sanction the ICC's President Japan's Tomoko Akane and senior lawyer Abdul Aissi of Senegal.
01:57The top officials have been tasked with probing war crimes allegedly committed by Israel in its war in Gaza.
02:03The ICC has described these sanctions as a flagrant attack on its independence.
02:13A Russian drone attack on a bus in Kherson in southern Ukraine killed four people and injured several
02:19others on Wednesday. In a post on Ex-President Volodymyr Zelenskyy slammed the attack as part of a
02:25safari hunt against Ukrainian civilians.
02:35Local media reported that Russia launched two ballistic missiles and 65 drones at Ukraine overnight
02:41into Wednesday. In Zaporizhia, two people were killed and at least 10 injured by Russian drone strikes.
02:47That's according to local authorities. The fire broke out on a second floor of the hostel,
02:53a furniture store was set ablaze and the roof of a nearby apartment building was damaged.
03:03Iran has executed over 900 people since the beginning of 2026,
03:08according to a report by human rights group the Abdurrahman Buramand Center.
03:12The Washington-based group documented 901 executions between January and July,
03:18and 28 executions in August alone. The rights group noticed a sharp increase in the use of capital
03:25punishment across cases involving national security, drug-related offenses, and members of ethnic
03:31minorities. At least 56 people were executed during the seven-month period on political or national
03:38security charges. 13 were accused of espionage and 14 were sentenced on other security-related
03:44charges. Drug-related offenses accounted for at least 268 executions. The figures also show a
03:52disproportionate impact on ethnic minorities and other vulnerable groups. The report documented the
03:58execution of 16 women and two people under the age of 18 at the time of their alleged offenses.
04:04The latest figures add to growing international concern over the scale of executions in Iran.
04:17The Latvian president has come to one of Europe's most sensitive borders as the Baltic
04:21country faces growing security threats from its eastern neighbors, from irregular migration to the
04:26risk of war. I'm standing here in Latvia with Belarus being just on my side. The fence behind me was
04:33built two years ago to cope with irregular migration. The Belarusian regime is being blamed for the
04:38high number of migrants attempting to enter Latvia. And the timing is no coincidence. Partly this is
04:44because Latvia had five elections in October, that's number one. And of course then it's really important
04:51somehow to show that we are not able to cope with the pressure. Latvia finished its fence along the 173
05:00kilometer border with Belarus this year. But all the work to strengthen the border protection should
05:05be completed by the end of the year. Latvia is adding surveillance systems, cameras, drones and towers.
05:10In the meantime, migrants are finding increasingly difficult ways to get through. Either climbing the
05:15fence or even digging under. On some days of the summer, Latvia has recorded more than 100 attempted illegal crossings.
05:30And the challenge goes well beyond people trying to cross the border. The Baltic country just days ago had
05:36a drone shot down in its territory, experiences hybrid attacks and is preparing even for a threat of war.
05:42These blocks, all these fortification materials would help us to enable this terrain. Latvia is strengthening
05:49its border defenses by pre-positioning fortification materials, planning minefields and other obstacles
05:54and integrating drone and deep strike capabilities into a defense line. Are you expecting more hybrid
05:59threats from Russia and Belarusia? We are much better prepared, but we never can rule out anything.
06:07Firefighters managed overnight to fully surround Belgium's largest wildfire in a century, but the
06:13situation on the ground remains complicated with several flare-ups overnight, authorities said on
06:19Wednesday. According to the crisis cell, the fire raging in the high-fence nature reserve is no
06:25more moving towards Germany, with the goal to bring it under control, court, if possible with aerial
06:31support. Firefighters say they launched a decisive push to encircle the wildfire on Tuesday, despite wind
06:39and rain hampering air support operations.
06:42When we arrive here, under this rain, we say that there is an incendie that is happening, but it is
06:46not
06:46because we see no flames, there is no fire, the fire is there, it is in the ground, and the
06:50rain is
06:50there, it is sure, but today there is a storm in abundance, it is very good, but it will probably
06:54have hundreds of liters to open the fire, because almost everywhere we see little flames,
06:59little smoke, there is a fire on the ground, there is a fire on the ground, so it will have
07:06been
07:06inonded for a long time.
07:08The blaze charring the vast expanse of buggy pitlands, pine trees and hiking trails spread over the weekend
07:15to some 3,000 hectares, but a hard access front towards the German border remained a concern for both
07:22authorities and some residents already under evacuation orders.
07:46Europe has been swept by weeks of devastating wildfires,
07:51areas filled by dry conditions and a historically hot summer,
07:55with France, Greece, Portugal and Spain also battling major fires.
08:04European surface temperatures are rising due to climate change,
08:09and the Mediterranean Sea has seen a rise of around 2 degrees, according to a new scientific study.
08:16The study by the World Weather Attribution Group shows that some of these areas
08:21temperatures are heating up faster than the global average.
08:24Researchers found that the change in temperature is severely impacting our ecosystems.
08:31Marine life is moving from warmer waters up into the Mediterranean,
08:37and then from warmer, more southerly waters, such as down near Spain,
08:41is now pushing more north towards Ireland, and then the fish, say around Ireland,
08:45are being pushed even further north again towards the North Sea.
08:48So this is concerning on a number of levels, not just for marine life, but also for its impacts on
08:55human communities.
08:56Experts say that this is particularly being driven by the continued burning of fossil fuels.
09:03Meanwhile, Western European seas have seen an increase of over 1.3 to 1.4 degrees Celsius.
09:10According to the European Union's global warming monitor, the world's oceans hit record high temperatures for a second straight month
09:19in July.
09:26Former Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended from tennis after testing positive for cocaine.
09:34He tested positive while playing at an ATP 250 event in Mallorca in June.
09:40Kyrgios said he had difficulties coming to terms with being near the end of his career after two years of
09:47injuries.
09:47But that he takes full responsibility for what he calls was a huge mistake.
09:52The 31-year-old Australian reached the Wimbledon singles final in 2022, where he lost to Novak Djokovic, although now
10:02ranks 919 after a series of injuries.
10:06Kyrgios got a wild card to play doubles at Wimbledon last month and lost in the first round with partner
10:13Alexander Bublik.
10:14The International Tennis Integrity Agency will prosecute the case, and the length of his ban will depend on whether the
10:21substance was taken during a competition.
10:25Cocaine is banned as a doping substance during competitions, with lower sanctions possible when used away from events.
10:39Sophie Adneau is writing a new page in French astronomy.
10:43Six months after joining the International Space Station, the aeronautical engineer made her first spacewalk this Tuesday.
10:51Adneau became the second European woman and the first French woman to carry out such a mission.
10:58The journey is carried alongside with the American Annie Menon.
11:03The operation began around 2.30 pm French time and was scheduled to last no less than six hours and
11:10a half.
11:11The objective is to replace the space-to-ground antenna, which is essential for high-start data transmissions and communications
11:19between the ISS and ground control centers.
11:23To do so, Sophie Adneau carries in her diving suit a liter of water and oxygen, enough to last about
11:2910 hours in space.
