00:03Many times when people think of Afghanistan, they just think of the headlines, but there's so much
00:10beyond that. So my intention was to just solely focus on showcasing the people because at the end
00:18of the day, they're far more similar to you and I than we may have seen. We just haven't been
00:24exposed to photographs and stories like this. My name is Daniel Malikyar. I'm an Afghan-American
00:36visual artist. My family is originally from Afghanistan and my parents immigrated to the
00:41United States in 1979, just before the Soviet invasion. And so growing up, I sort of had this
00:49dual experience where at home, I was always shown and got to experience the beauty of our culture
00:58through the food, through the music, through all of the different stories that my family would tell me.
01:05But then when I'd step outside, the experience was entirely different. It was driven through
01:11narratives of what you saw in the headlines. And so I always sort of had this longing to
01:18bridge that gap and gain a deeper understanding of both where I come from, but also myself. It felt
01:26like a piece of me was missing in a way. So I believe that this project in a way was
01:32me sort of
01:34trying to just gain a deeper understanding of what my roots were and almost
01:42fulfill and document the missing void of those stories.
01:57Afghanistan is a country that has many different ethnic backgrounds, thousands of years of history
02:06and culture. And I think in today's day and age, it's very difficult to discover new places and new things
02:16and tell those stories because of how interconnected we all are through globalization, technology. And
02:22Afghanistan, I think, is one of the few places where there are so many unseen human stories and places that
02:32deserve to be shown to the world.
02:36I was in a taxi cab very early in the morning, leaving Kabul on my way to a rural village
02:43to photograph a fashion
02:45subculture that I had discovered. And just as we were making our way out of the city, I noticed these
02:52massive
02:52globs of color kind of dancing in the distance. It almost felt surreal in a way. And I knew right
02:58away that they were
02:58balloon sellers and they were just on their way to work in the morning and you see them scattered throughout
03:03the city from time to time. But it's very rare that they have all of their balloons with them because
03:08they
03:09they sell them throughout the day. So I got very fortunate to make that photograph in that very, very brief
03:15moment in time. And oftentimes I feel like the the most special photographs are almost presented to you.
03:22The photograph of this beautiful Kyrgyz girl milking a yak took place in the Palmyr mountains in Afghanistan.
03:32And the Kyrgyz people, they're nomadic. So they travel three to four times throughout the year, typically,
03:40and it's in search of the best grazing land for their cattle. And so in the mornings and in the
03:45evenings,
03:46they milk the yaks. It's a it's a daily ritual. And a lot of the livelihood revolves around the yaks.
03:51So I got very fortunate that I happened to document this moment of a beautiful girl,
03:59Sharga, as she was milking the yak in the afternoon before they were tied down for the evening.
04:22As the 40th of hotline, I took the place of the Grandchart, the one by the 7th of the
04:3970s of the 60s to 50s. So I lived in prayer for the 9th of the 18th of 2019.
04:40The neighborhood is a great place of the reservation at manhà and the 80s.
04:41The 10th of the 1st of the 10th of the 11th of the 11th of the 11th of the 15th
04:41of the 11th of the 15th of of the 13th of the 11th of the 10th of the 11th.
04:50The bridge passes in the village of Agrippina,
04:55the circle of Caligula and then of Nerone,
04:57and takes the name of Nerone,
04:59because Nerone is the most famous person
05:03to this area,
05:04because in the circle of Nerone,
05:06where now it is located in the Vatican,
05:07will be martirized by the Apostle Pietro.
05:10The bridge is, however,
05:12is considered the most ancient,
05:14which is built by Caligula,
05:16the zio of Nerone,
05:17to connect the villa
05:19that is currently on the other side,
05:20in accordance with the Hospital of Santo Spirit,
05:24to Agrippina,
05:25whose mother,
05:26which is the mother of Caligula,
05:27and we assume that already in 1939 d.C.
05:45The bridge is facing a pretty important phase,
05:50and this is the cause of a series of factors,
05:55such as the prolonged siccities of these summer months.
06:00The port of Median, in the urban tract of Rome,
06:02is down to 80 m³,
06:06against a historical value
06:08that is around 150 m³,
06:12as a median.

07:07This is the Medicine Festival in the UK, west of London.
07:11It's a not-for-profit gathering combining music, art, ceremony, indigenous traditions,
07:17well-being and environmental activism.
07:20Over 10,000 people are attending this year coming from all over the world.
07:45I'm from the Netherlands, it is actually my first time here and what I like about the festival
07:52is the sharing of wisdoms, actually, that's the reason why I came.
07:56I hope to get out of here like inspired, rested and, yeah, motivated as well.
08:04The people, the connection, it feels like when you come here, it feels like home.
08:09In Europe and around the world, there's a growing interest in conscious festivals such as medicine,
08:15which encouraged people to explore their inner selves, reconnect with nature and create a sense of community.
08:22We see ourselves as part of nature and not separate from it.
08:26And so we promote the medicine of dance, the medicine of music, the medicine of community,
08:33seeing people who have maybe a different worldview and engaging with that, learning new skills,
08:41understanding new ways of seeing the world. We would call it a sacred festival.
08:52To date, the medicine festival has donated over 100,000 euros to support the environment and indigenous communities.
09:09It looks like the whole neighborhood has lost power.
09:14What the hell was that?
09:23We can't leave.
09:27I think that our neighborhood, our house, our whole street has moved.
09:37How the hell is that even possible?
09:41I love the, I love, that's what I loved about the script when I first read it was the family
09:46story
09:47and that it was, I didn't know exactly where the story was going to go.
09:51But once I realized that it was a crazy dinosaur survival movie,
09:59I was still really impressed that David was writing about this couple and about their relationship
10:06and how through whatever's happening in their life, they're unable to talk to each other properly,
10:14express themselves properly and through fighting for the actual survival of their family,
10:19they find each other again.
10:20I really, I loved that.
10:22It was very, it was very well written.
10:25What the hell's going on?
10:26Get inside now!
10:31It was a mixture, it was a mixture of a lot of different types of movie magic.
10:35So I had been told when I signed on that they were going to make every effort to do this
10:41practically
10:42and it was going to be animatronics and puppetry.
10:45That didn't happen.
10:47So, but we did get really kind and wonderful stuntmen in leotards holding long poles that had dino heads on
10:58them,
10:58sort of prancing across a suburban street.
11:00And the thing that was so amazing was when you saw them and the scene wasn't happening,
11:05it looked so funny.
11:07And then the second David said action and you were there in the mindset of the character,
11:10they were the most terrifying things you'd ever seen.
11:13They were like just creepy and strange.
11:21Gather supplies.
11:22Grab anything you can use as a weapon.
11:28What are we gonna do?
11:33We're gonna survive.
