00:05nominated, Deputy Prime Minister David Lamey told Euronews.
00:09The European Commission proposed extending the temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees
00:14until 2028, while limiting the status for newly arriving military agents.
00:20A new Europol report has dealt into EU's most threatening criminal networks.
00:30The death toll in Venezuela's powerful twin earthquakes on Wednesday night have risen to 235,
00:36with officials warning it may continue to climb in the coming days.
00:41The United Kingdom will ensure a continuation in its foreign policy when a new Labour leader and prime minister is
00:48nominated,
00:49Deputy Prime Minister David Lamey has told Europe Today.
00:52His comments came after outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer assured an orderly transition to a new Labour government.
01:00There's absolutely no question of a change in foreign policy.
01:06We have remained committed to Ukraine through successive governments, and that will continue.
01:13And we have been absolutely clear, reconnected with the global community.
01:17A European reset all about continues.
01:21Keir Starmer set out a timetable for his resignation on Monday, amid mounting calls for a change in leadership from
01:28within the Labour Party, as it loses support.
01:31Former Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is currently tipped to run uncontested for the role, and could be at the
01:38helm as early as July the 17th.
01:40A Burnham government is widely expected to maintain Starmer's key foreign policy principles, including on deepening trading and economic ties
01:49with the European Union, in a bid to tear down the barriers to cooperation created by Brexit.
01:54The EU-UK summit, due to take place on July the 22nd, has now been postponed in response to the
02:01political transition in London.
02:03The two sides were expected to seal deals on agri-food imports, emissions trading and youth mobility.
02:12The European Commission proposed on Friday to extend its temporary protection scheme for Ukrainian refugees until March 2028,
02:21while explicitly blocking newly arriving military-age men from obtaining the status.
02:26The policy shift announced by EU Home Affairs Commissioner Magnus Brunner aims to support Kiev's mobilization needs by excluding individuals
02:35aged 23 to 60 who leave Ukraine without legal military authorization.
02:40Our proposal provides that temporary protection should not be granted to newly arriving persons who are not allowed to leave
02:50Ukraine because of their military obligations under Ukrainian law.
02:56And this is what Ukraine has asked us to do, and this is what we are doing.
03:02The exemptions will remain intact for individuals with severe disabilities, fathers caring for three or more children, and those deemed
03:11entirely unfit for combat duties.
03:13Adult men currently make up 26.6% of Ukrainian refugees living across Europe, but EU officials confirm that anyone
03:22who has already been granted status will not be stripped of their legal protections.
03:28The proposal must now be approved by a qualified majority, requiring at least 15 member states, representing 65% of
03:36the total European population, to vote in favor.
03:40Meanwhile, Denmark has bypassed the wider EU migration framework to already deploy a similar system,
03:46decreeing that incoming Ukrainian men will receive residence permits only if they can prove a formal military exemption.
03:56The Ukraine Reconstruction Conference is both a sign of solidarity and one of the largest economic events in recent years,
04:04says Eliza Zeidler, state secretary at the Ministry of State Assets, in an interview with Euronews Poland.
04:41Business leaders are taking a pragmatic view of the political turmoil.
04:45For them, Ukraine's reconstruction also means building a new standard of quality,
04:49and they're looking at it from a long-term perspective.
05:25What would help companies get involved in Ukraine's reconstruction before the war ends
05:30is receiving financial guarantees from the government.
05:32To jest moment, kiedy możemy rozpoznać ten rynek i to robi nasza spółka.
05:38Założyliśmy biuro w Kijowie.
I dzisiaj jeszcze, kiedy trwają działania wojenne, uważam,
06:09Approximately 200 contracts and agreements are expected to be signed during the Ukraine Reconstruction Conference.
06:20A new Europol report has delved into EU's most threatening criminal networks.
06:25A staggering 731 of them have been identified as operating within the EU,
06:31with over 400,000 members from 118 nationalities.
06:35Their main business areas are drug trafficking, followed by fraud and online fraud.
06:39The EU's law enforcement agency highlights the rise of cybercrime in particular.
06:45Thank you for the question.
06:45All crime is nurtured online. It's accelerated by area and technology.
06:52Criminal networks also exploit weaknesses in financial systems and global trade.
06:57They have a very strong financial backup.
07:00They use sophisticated countermeasures.
07:02They use high levels of corruption.
07:05They are globally internationally connected, sells across the EU and beyond.
07:09So, an international enterprise.
07:12Europol stresses that targeting individuals is not enough.
07:16As long as the business model survives, others will step in and replace them.
07:20Hence, the EU agency recommends to strengthen cross-border law enforcement,
07:24invest more in disrupting criminal digital infrastructure,
07:28and to follow the money to recover criminal assets.
07:33The European Union's border agency, Frontex, launched a new command unit in Lisbon on Wednesday.
07:40Contingent 5 will be a regional command and will operate in the Iberian Peninsula,
07:44covering the Portuguese and Spanish borders.
07:47Frontex is expected to deploy more than 300 agents to reinforce security on the Portuguese mainland
07:53and in the autonomous region of the Azores, on the Spanish mainland and in the Canary Islands,
07:59as well as at key entry points into Europe in the Western Mediterranean.
08:04Regarding the challenges posed by the new European control system,
08:07the director of Frontex assured that airport border control should not pose an increased concern in the near future.
08:14All member states are right now challenged at the borders,
08:18not only because of the numbers, but also because of the introduction of new systems,
08:21but we will manage it, and Portugal will also manage it for sure.
08:25Frontex will do its utmost. We are here to support.
08:27I think we're already helping a lot. It will take time for sure,
08:31but I'm fully confident that Portugal will deliver with Frontex and later on perhaps even without Frontex,
08:37but for now we are willing and able to help, and we are helping.
08:42Portugal already has a reinforcement of 25 Frontex agents,
08:46but that number may increase to 60 agents at airports.
09:12relativamente à segurança do nosso território, do território europeu.
09:16Amongst Spain's greatest concerns at the moment is combating illegal immigration,
09:21as the country is on the front lines of some of Europe's busiest migration routes.
09:44The launch came as the EU adopts a tougher stance on irregular migration,
09:49with new rules across the bloc taking effect in June,
09:52aimed at stricter border controls and faster deportations.
09:56Currently, there are 3,800 officers deployed across Europe.
10:00Frontex's permanent staff is expected to reach 10,000 officers by 2027.
10:10The death toll in Venezuela's twin quakes on Wednesday night has risen to 235,
10:16according to the country's health minister,
10:18who added that more than 4,300 others have also been injured.
10:23Search and rescue efforts are continuing in the worst affected regions,
10:27including La Guerra, just north of the capital Caracas.
10:31A 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck in quick succession,
10:36just minutes apart, according to the U.S. Geological Survey,
10:40marking the country's worst natural disaster in over a century.
10:45Thousands are still reported missing,
10:46and officials warn the death toll may continue to rise in the coming days.
10:51The government, headed by Acting President Delce Rodriguez,
10:55has issued evacuation notices to thousands of residences in the affected regions,
10:59which span all the way to Brazil's Amazon.
11:03Rodriguez says her cabinet is mobilizing all available resources to help those most vulnerable,
11:09and pleaded for more assistance from the country's private sector,
11:12as well as neighboring nations.
11:15Mexico, Chile, Ecuador, and El Salvador were among the countries that have dispatched aid
11:20and sent rescue teams to assist in search efforts.
11:24The United States, which seized then-President Nicolas Maduro in a stunning military operation earlier this year,
11:31has waived some of its sanctions on the country until the 23rd of October
11:35to allow transactions related to earthquake relief.
