00:58Hello, welcome to From the South. I am Lorena Font from the Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
01:03We begin with the news. Stay with us.
01:20Thousands of demonstrators assembled at the Lincoln Memoriam in Washington, D.C. for the March on Washington 2026
01:28Defend the Vote held on the 63th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s historic speech, I Have a Dream.
01:34The mass rally brought together civil rights leaders and lawmakers to demand federal protection against recent rollbacks to voting rights
01:42across several U.S. states.
01:44Organized by National Action Network and the Drum Major Institute alongside dozens of community groups,
01:50the mobilization focused on defending access to the ballot box ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.
01:57Keynote speakers highlighted ongoing legislative challenges to congressional mapping,
02:02anti-discrimination protection and economic equity programs urging nationwide action to safeguard civil rights.
02:12It's very important today to exercise our First Amendment right and to spread awareness about what's going on in our
02:18current administration.
02:19It's important to stay informed on the decisions that are being made that will ultimately change our lives as citizens
02:25of the United States.
02:26And this time, too. So, you know, like this is like get out the vote, protect the vote.
02:32All other rights are protected by voting rights. Voting rights protect all other rights.
02:38So like once the voting rights are gone, they can really do whatever they want.
02:41So it's really important for us to be out now.
02:47A United States military plane carrying 73 deported migrants, 29 Mexican and 44 Honduran nationals has arrived at San Pedro
02:56Sula Airport in Honduras.
02:58The flight carried Honduran and Mexican nationals forced to return, exposing the human tolls of forced displacement driven by economic
03:06inequality and systemic crisis across the region.
03:09Honduran authorities persisted the deportees at temporary shelters in San Pedro Sula, where non-Honduran nationals now face further deportation
03:18protocols toward Guatemala.
03:20Human rights organizations continue to denounce punitive expulsion policies, calling for regional solidarity and structural solutions to address the root
03:28causes of migration.
03:36Cuba's President Miguel Díaz-Canal Bermúdez continued his inspections of Havana-based organizations that are making significant investments to improve
03:45basic services for the population, such as water supply and electricity generation.
03:50The leader, accompanied by members of the Council of Ministers, reviewed the plan to restore the Paso Seco aqueduct near
03:57Lenin Park in Havana during the extensive discussion at the construction site.
04:02The President emphasized the need to ensure continuous pumping, including when power from the national electricity grid is unavailable.
04:10Also, the head of state visited the 50 megawatts battery system being installed near the Havana Technological University, which contributes
04:18to the stability of the electricity system.
04:20At the same time, President Miguel Díaz-Canal called for taking advantage of all the opportunities offered by the 176
04:28recently approved socioeconomic measures.
04:36Meanwhile, on Friday, Cuba restores its national power grid following a partial outage caused by an oscillation in the transmission
04:44lines that left the country's five eastern provinces without power on Thursday.
04:49The incident left approximately 3.4 million people in eastern provinces, Las Tunas, Holguín and Granma, leading to the shutdown
04:57of power plants No. 6 at the Antonio Maceo Thermal Power Plant, No. 1 at the Lilio Ramón Pérez Thermal
05:04Power Plant known as Felton, and No. 6 at the 10 de octubre Thermal Power Plant.
05:09In turn, the escalation of the energy blockade imposed by the United States has prevented the proper operation of the
05:15thermoelectric and distribution systems due to a lack of imported diesel and fuel.
05:27The United States Department of the Treasury, OFAC, has partially eased sanctions on Venezuela by issuing a series of updated
05:36general licenses for key economic sectors.
05:39General License 46D authorizes U.S. companies to engage in the extraction, marketing, import, and transport of Venezuelan oil and
05:48petrochemicals involving state energy firm PDVSA.
05:52Additional measures include License 47B for diluent sales, License 51C authorizing mineral and gold operations, and License 61A approving telecommunications
06:05-related services.
06:06The broader package updates multiple frameworks to permit key transactions, goods, and operational services supporting Venezuela's core industries.

06:58Likewise, the political leader argued that the election should be annulled,
07:02and stated that the complaint would be brought before the United Nations regarding voter manipulation in different countries in the

07:27We'll be right back, stay with us.
07:51Welcome back to From the South. We continue now with more information.
07:55In the autonomous city of Ceuta, Spain, there has been an increase in violence by residents against migrants over the
08:01last 24 hours.
08:02Residents of the coastal city gathered a trampoline beach where they broke throughout the police barricade
08:08and burned dozens of tents set up to force the migrants out.
08:12Spanish authorities point to the president of Ceuta, Juan Jesús Vivas, as the one directly responsible for the violent events
08:20of the past few hours.
08:22Furthermore, senior officials condemn the events in Ceuta, describing them as unacceptable
08:26and claiming that they were driven by ultra-radical groups.
08:38In this regard, on Friday, during a parliamentary session which takes place daily in the lower chamber of Spain's parliament,
08:45Interior Minister Fernando Grande Marlaska called for an end to all forms of violence in Spain's enclave of Ceuta
08:52after protests over security turned into clashes between local police.
09:00And in that regard, given the events that have been unfolding in recent days, and especially yesterday and the day
09:06before yesterday,
09:08I call for calm and an end to any kind of violence because, as you are as well aware as
09:13I am,
09:14violence is not the way to resolve any complex problem.
09:19And, while I have absolute empathy for the citizens of Ceuta, violence is by no means the way forward.
09:28Widespread protests broke out in Iceland against the resumption of negotiations for joining the European Union.
09:34Reykjavík, the country's capital, was the scene of this protest outside the parliament building,
09:39where more than 1,000 supporters gathered with flags and banners bearing slogans such as a note to the European
09:45Union.
09:46This mobilization comes just a few days before the Icelandic people vote in a referendum
09:52on whether the government should resume membership negotiations with the European Union,
09:57a step that does not imply a final decision to join.
10:01The referendum is taking place against a backdrop of geopolitical changes,
10:05including the war in Ukraine and recent U.S. statements regarding Greenland.
10:16In Indonesia, thousands of protesters and police clashed outside parliament in Jakarta
10:21to demand stricter sanctions against corruption.
10:25Riot police used tear gas and water canyons to disperse the protesters.
10:29They marched toward parliament to demand the passage of a bill stale since 2008
10:35that allows for the confiscation of the assets of corrupt officials.
10:39They also demanded the implementation of the death penalty for those convicted of this crime.
10:45Furthermore, they called for an end to the free school meal program,
10:48which has been plagued by allegations of corruption in cases of mass food poisoning.
11:14Iran is preparing a list of conditions to present to the United States for the reopening of the Strait of
11:20Hormuz.
11:20According to Mohsen Rezaev, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council,
11:25Iran has reached an agreement with Oman on a shipping corridor throughout the Strait.
11:30He added that ships would be allowed to use a designated temporary channel in the central part of the Strait
11:36if the United States meets Iran conditions.
11:39Rezaev other warned that if the blockade continues,
11:42Iran will target U.S. economic interest fully and with intensity and force.
11:46The security official also stated that if the conflict resumes,
11:51Iran will prepare for a new phase and that any future war will be different from previous ones.
12:03For his part, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbasarashi spoke about the regional conflict
12:07following his meeting with the Qatari official.
12:10He took to his ex-account to say,
12:12Putting diplomacy back on track isn't impossible.
12:15It hinges on U.S. understanding of one simple fact.
12:19Pressure does not work.
12:21The U.S. should build trust, speak respectfully,
12:24acknowledge our rights and uphold commitments.
12:35Moving on to Ukraine.
12:37On Thursday, protesters gathered in Kyiv to express their dissatisfaction
12:41with President Volodymyr Zelensky's government.
12:43The protests over the dismissal of former Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov
12:48coincided with his allegations of corruption against the government.
12:52Fedorov's dismissal sparked protests with serious consequences in the midst of the conflict with Russia
12:58and come amid an anti-corruption investigation into a high-ranking official
13:03in President Zelensky's office who is involved in a money-laundry scheme.
13:14Meanwhile in Russia, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov assured that peace talks with Ukraine
13:19are currently suspended, stressing that Kyiv is not seeking a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
13:25This way, during a press briefing offered on Friday,
13:29Peskov emphasized that Ukraine is aware of Moscow's demands
13:32but has no intention of discussing them through diplomatic means.
13:36In turn, he asserted Russia is maintaining a positive momentum on the battlefield
13:40as a special military operation continues striking key Ukrainian military infrastructure.
13:46In this regard, Peskov declared that recent Western media reports
13:50about an escalation of the conflict are scare stories.
13:54Moscow and Kiev last held peace negotiations under U.S. mediation earlier this year
13:59when they held three rounds of peace talks,
14:02the first two in Abu Dhabi and the third in Geneva.

14:52We continue now with more information.
14:54The death toll from the flash floods along the border between Nepal and China's Tibetan region
14:59has risen to at least 579, with nearly 2,000 people remain missing.
15:05Disaster management authorities in Nepal confirm that search teams have rescued over 1,400 injured individuals
15:12as operations expand downstream.
15:14Emergency rescue efforts faced a temporary pause after a large barrier lake formed by landslide debris
15:21overflowed, raising fears of a secondary flash flood.
15:25Operations have since resumed.
15:27After engineers determined the water runoff was manageable,
15:31over 4,000 police and military personnel continue searching devastated river corridors
15:36to locate survivors and clear blocked transit routes.
15:45In the aftermath of the tragedy, local media reported on Friday
15:50that the Nepali government has asked Meta and TikTok to remove graphic images,
15:55AI-generated videos, fraudulent donation, QR codes and misleading posts circulating online.
16:02Precisely, the coordinator of the government's Social Media Regulation and Management Task Force,
16:07Bihai Kumar Roy, said authorities asked the companies to remove objectionable and deceptive content
16:14as soon as it is flagged, alleging it could mislead the public,
16:19hamper relief operations or cause further distress to victims' families.
16:23Officials also urged the platforms to make their algorithms more proactive
16:27in detecting and blocking graphic and false content.
16:30since Meta and TikTok currently take between 24 and 48 hours
16:35to respond to reported posts.
16:44China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs provided a report on the government's action plans
16:49following the devastating flooding that affected the Chinese autonomous region of Tibet.
17:00After the disaster, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China
17:04paid great attention to the situation.
17:09Xi Jinping, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China,
17:13immediately made important instructions
17:15and made clear requirements for rescue and emergency treatment.
17:20under the command of Xi Jinping,
17:22the Politburo Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee of the Communist Party of China
17:28and the Prime Minister of the State Council, Li Chiang,
17:31rushed to the disaster area to visit the victims and rescue personnel.
17:35Dr. Zhang Gueqing, Kən Vargas,
17:37the President's Administration,
17:38is the Executive Director of the National Administration.
17:38He said Dr. Zhang,
17:41the President's National Union of Educators expressed its concern
17:44over the lack of funding and contingency plans
17:47for educational institutions affected by insecurity
17:50and the effects of the El Niño phenomenon,
17:53which lead to schools' dropouts.
17:54Andrés Quispe, president of the UNE, stated that the National Secretariat for Risk Management has warned that due to the
18:03effects of El Niño, 7,139 educational institutions, which together encompass more than 1.2 million students, could be affected.
18:13Quispe explained that in the Ciarran and the Amazon region, where the school year is about to begin, there are
18:205,139 educational facilities. Of these, 1,280 have infrastructure problems. However, only 43 were renovated during the 2025-2026
18:32school year.
18:33Due to the economic difficulties and current situation in the nation, some children are forced to look for work during
18:40the vacation instead of participating in educational activities.
18:51In the United States, severe storms swept across North Texas, producing 70-mile-per-hour wind gusts that tore roofs
18:58of buildings, downed trees and knocked out power lines.
19:02Local residents described sudden tornado-like downboards that damaged homes, leaving at least one person hospitalized due to a roof
19:09collapse.
19:10Thousands of utility customers lost electricity across Terran and Dallas counties, compounding the crisis as triple-digit hit advisories remain
19:19active.
19:20The prolonged blackout forced the evacuation of a senior living facility in North and Fort Worth, with firefighters safely relocating
19:2810 residents to a temporary shelter.
19:36In northern and northeastern Algeria, dozens of fires are reported to be still burning.
19:42So far, they have claimed the lives of 12 people, and mitigation efforts continue to minimize the impact on vegetation
19:49and agricultural areas.
19:50According to civil protection authorities, of the 174 fires that occurred between August 27 and 28, at least 64 remain
20:00active.
20:00The fires have affected 10 Algerian provinces, and the highest concentration of places is reported in Tijel, which has recorded
20:0820 fires so far.
20:10For this part, the Egyptian government expressed solidarity with the people and the government of Algeria, while civil protection brigades,
20:18the army and air support units are working on response operations to put out the fire and prevent the disaster
20:24from spreading.
20:32Moving on to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the country has launched a targeted Ebola vaccination campaign in Kisangani
20:40to contain an outbreak that has recorded over 5,000 cases and 2,600 deaths.
20:45The first phase prioritizes frontline doctors, nurses, and safe burial teams, backed by an initial delivery of 70,000 Erbevo
20:54vaccine doses to protect essential personnel.
20:57Health Minister Roger Canva urged all frontline responders and high-risk contacts to get vaccinated to prevent further transmission of
21:05the virus across the country.
21:07Medical staff, including nurses and treatment centers, directors, led by example by receiving their jobs publicly to build trust and
21:15encourage participation in the drive.
21:24United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said Thursday that an additional $1.1 billion is urgently needed to fight the
21:34Ebola outbreak that is rapidly spreading beyond containment.
21:39The outbreak is the fastest-growing Ebola epidemic on record, it is growing faster and wider than the response to
21:49contain it, but it can be stopped, we know how to contain Ebola, how to interrupt transmission and how to
21:57save lives, but we must also overcome another virus, the virus of indifference, we are facing a public health emergency,
22:06the virus of indifference, we are facing a public health emergency in one of the world's most fragile settings.
22:10For example, three decades of conflict in Ituri province alone have displaced 1 million people and severely weakened access to
22:19food, healthcare, and other basic services.
22:23Across the region, more than 12 million people need humanitarian assistance and protection.
22:29Meanwhile, health systems are overstretched, infrastructure is weak, entire communities remain difficult to reach, the world still has an opportunity
22:40to get ahead of this crisis, but time is not on our side.
22:44The Ebola outbreak deserves far greater attention than it is receiving today.
22:50The communities affected deserve far greater assistance, and the response deserves far greater support.
22:57The world has the knowledge, the means, and the resources to stop this outbreak.
23:02It's time to summon the collective determination to act before the cost becomes more deadly, more difficult, and more expensive.
23:15And like this, we have gone to the end of this brief.
