Rep. Joyce Beatty has sharply criticized President Donald Trump over the controversial Kennedy Center name change, vowing to continue fighting the move. Speaking about the ongoing court hearing, Beatty accused Trump of bringing embarrassment to the White House and said the dispute was another reason for opponents to keep challenging the decision. She also expressed confidence that public opinion supports their position, declaring that “the American people are on our side.” The remarks come as the legal battle over the Kennedy Center’s name continues to draw national attention.

00:00Well, first of all, as you probably know, we appeared before Judge Cooper again.
00:05And again, we are dealing with all the unlawful actions about the Kennedy Center
00:10that Donald Trump and the board put forward.
00:15As you know, there were several of us who voted in opposition to it.
00:19I am a board member, and we want this over, but we want it done lawfully.
00:24We were very careful about making sure in the board meeting that we said we didn't have enough time,
00:30we didn't have enough information.
00:32A couple PowerPoint slides was presented to us.
00:37But today was a good day in court because we were here to fight for justice.
00:42And when you think about a president of the United States, that board meeting was over two hours.
00:47And while the president acknowledged himself that he had been on the virtual call the entire time listening,
00:55we're dealing with being at war.
00:57We're dealing with people trying to decide whether they can get their medicine, their food,
01:02or put gas in their car to get to work.
01:04And he got on the board call to basically talk about himself
01:08and to make snide remarks about several of us, including myself.
01:13So you have to understand what we're dealing with.
01:16Another reason we want to make sure that we do it in a lawful way.
01:22I don't believe that I have a lot of trust.
01:25You all will remember what we were told about the East Wing.
01:30No one told us that he was going to do away with the Rose Garden,
01:34that the entire wing was going to be abolished or under demolition.
01:42He told us that there was going to be a ballroom.
01:45We've seen all of the horrific things that he has done.
01:50So today was another day in court, and we will continue to fight against things that are unlawful.
01:56I'm very lucky to have a team of lawyers who understand the law and clearly articulated it.
02:06So thank you for being here.
02:08And I'd like to ask Nate Thaniel to say something.
02:12What I will just say very clearly is the court decided this in May.
02:17Judge Cooper was exceedingly clear.
02:19The Kennedy Center's public spaces are named for John F. Kennedy.
02:23They must honor John and F. Kennedy, and they can honor nobody else.
02:27So his decision was very clear.
02:28And we think, and what we told the court today, is that the government is flouting the court's orders,
02:34it's flouting the court's decisions, and it's courting a constitutional crisis over one man's vanity.
02:40And I want to just touch on one thing that the congressman mentioned.
02:42In their filing on Monday, the Department of Justice threatened to tear down the Kennedy Center
02:48if they don't get their own way.
02:51It was the equivalent of saying, my, what a nice Kennedy Center you have there.
02:55Shame if something were to happen to it.
02:57This is unconscionable.
02:59It's unbecoming of the Department of Justice, and it's wrong.
03:01And it's very childish.
03:03I mean, come on, this is the President of the United States saying,
03:06if I don't get my way, doing something unlawful,
03:10then I'm just going to come in and tear it down and make it some arena venue.
03:15We've seen what he's done in the most embarrassing ways to the White House.
03:21So that's another reason that we will continue to fight,
03:24because the American people are on our side.
03:28They're asking us to stand up and to fight for justice.
03:32And so it's very personal to me.
03:34The Kennedy family has been very supportive of this,
03:38and I know they would want me to say thank you to all of the volunteers.
03:43And lastly, let me say, this is affecting everyday people's lives,
03:49the people who work there, the people who come there
03:52and hold it in such high esteem because it is our Kennedy Center.
