House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has warned that the Trump administration cannot legally rename the Kennedy Center without formal legislative approval from Congress. Speaking to reporters, Jeffries said the Kennedy Center Board lacks the authority to change the institution’s name, noting that its establishment and name are explicitly defined in U.S. law.

The comments came after White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that the Kennedy Center’s board had unanimously voted to rename the iconic venue the “Trump–Kennedy Center.” Leavitt claimed the decision reflected President Trump’s role in “saving the building” over the past year.

However, Democrats argue that the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is protected under U.S. Code, meaning any name change would require an act of Congress — setting the stage for a legal and political showdown over presidential power, cultural institutions, and congressional authority.

00:00With respect to the latest foolishness to come out of the Trump administration,
00:08I mean, it really seems to me at this point that Donald Trump doesn't give a damn about the
00:14prospects of the country and the Republican Party. The notion that Donald Trump has spent
00:22more time on the golf course than trying to keep health care affordable for the American people
00:29or drive down the high cost of living in and of itself is extraordinary. But then we layer on top
00:35of that, he can find $40 billion to bail out Argentina. He's trying to extort $230 million
00:43from the Department of Justice. He literally has ordered the destruction of the East Wing
00:50of the White House. At the same time, he says the affordability crisis is a hoax.
00:56Republicans are being crushed electorally all across the country. News of the demise of the
01:03Democratic Party was greatly exaggerated. And yet, what Donald Trump comes up with
01:11at this particular point in time to end the year is not ordering Mike Johnson, because he could have
01:19done that, to remain in Washington until we address the issue of health care affordability and extend the
01:29Affordable Care Act tax credits that the so-called Kennedy Center board wants to rename the Kennedy Center
01:39after Donald Trump. Are you kidding me? Like, how does that help deal with the affordability crisis
01:47in this country? These people are pathetic. They are sycophants. And these are individuals right now
01:59who are bending the knee to a loser. The Republicans are losers. Why are you bending the knee at this point
02:08in time? It's not clear to you that, as Michael Ray Richardson, the great former New York Knicks, once said,
02:17the ship be sinking? It's over. This is the Titanic. I don't get it. I really don't understand the situation.
02:28Because these people promised that they were going to lower the high cost of living on day one.
02:33And they failed to do it in year one, let alone day one. And now their holiday gift to the American people
02:43is to continue to try to block our ability to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits.
02:51But they want to rename, allegedly, the Kennedy Center after Donald J. Trump.
02:58These are sick people. Something is really wrong with these folks.
03:04And here's the final thing. They don't have the power to do it.
03:10Only Congress can rename the Kennedy Center. The wannabe king and his sycophantic minions can't do it.
03:20But they're going to create a spectacle across the country. And everybody's going to chase this story.
03:29But how does that actually help the American people who've already been convinced that Donald Trump is
03:36not focused on making their life better? The whole thing is extraordinary.
03:40And it's another indication of the fact that things have fallen apart quickly
03:50for Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
03:52And House Democrats are going to continue our commitment to the principle that in this great country,
03:59when you work hard and play by the rules, everyone should be able to live an affordable life,
04:07a comfortable life, and the good life. Not too much to ask for in the wealthiest country in the history of the world.
04:15Good paying job, good housing, good health care, good education for your children, and a good retirement.
04:21And that's what Democrats are going to continue to fight to achieve for every single American in this country.
04:31Thank you all. Happy holidays.
04:33Happy holidays.
