00:45fragrance trifecta it's a body wash it's a lotion and it's a mist this scent is kind of giving like
00:52that first class upgrade that's only ever happened to me one time which was probably one of the peak
00:59highlights of my entire life window seat ample room like as soon as you press that button on a 12
01:05-hour
01:05flight where you just like lay down and you're like oh my god I actually don't mind traveling across the
01:10world and someone just brings you a nice little warm scented towel that you put over your eyes and
01:15you go to bed you can layer it up you can feel the opulence and we'll lock in for the
01:19day so yes I
01:21want to be so honest with you right now I'm really not entirely here mentally I'm in Paris I was
01:28actually
01:28there a couple of weeks ago doing some fragrance research I was in just the streets it was a little
01:34bit rainy but I was just doing my rounds to find all the best fragrances in the city I would
01:41argue
01:42probably one of the best cities to actually do perfume research I'm walking into the hotel lobbies
01:47and I'm getting that very specific hotel smell and mixed with the fact that since we're in Paris it
01:54gives you buttery croissant and a gust of kind of I don't know we can say je ne sais quoi
02:00probably one
02:01of my best scent memories is the first trip that I ever took to Madrid it was in high school
02:05I was 14
02:06which means at that point I was a woman my mother was very very concerned that because I saw the
02:12Lizzie
02:12McGuire movie I was going to go to Spain and meet a Spanish man and never come back and like
02:18fly away
02:19in a Vespa when I got off the plane in the Madrid airport I was so dehydrated I went to
02:27the first kind
02:28of like boring food kiosk stand and I've never seen one of these machines in my life the machine that
02:33like cuts the oranges directly in front of you and like creates freshly squeezed orange juice and
02:39luckily for me it was like peak orange season so I had perfectly juiced Valencia oranges straight off
02:46the plane and that is like the most concrete memory in my entire life and it's a high that I
02:52like continue
02:53to search for but even if I get it in Madrid it like doesn't exist but I think that's the
02:58beauty of
02:59traveling you get such incredible scent memories from moments that are most unexpected and then they
03:05kind of just live with you forever and then you end up chasing them one of my favorite aspects of
03:10travel is a good hotel scent I personally being in New York I love the smell of the addition hotel
03:16it's done by Le Labo it's black tea it's bergamot it's leather it's both kind of elevated but not
03:21too in your face and stuffy and old school which I feel like you can kind of get that vibe
03:28when you go to
03:28like the more classic hotels so I think that we can agree that fragrance is an undeniable part of
03:34travel and travel is an undeniable part of fragrance so today I wanted to talk to someone with a truly
03:40comprehensive scent repository just from the amount of places that she's traveled a cultural critic a
03:46former editor at some of the major fashion publications and she's been quite literally everywhere
03:53and if she hasn't been everywhere she's very much on her way to just being like the travel star
03:58of my personal dreams honestly Paris for sure Milan Jamaica which is in my cultural heritage so I'm
04:05happy to talk about that Tokyo which is a place I have to visit before I die might scatter my
04:10ashes
04:11there as well China Botswana crazy crazy repertoire this diva is on a plane what feels like kind of
04:18every week and her skin is incredible so I need to know how she is not dry from airplane air
04:24and her
04:25role in culture has placed her in the back of black cars in every fashion capital on the earth and
04:30I need
04:30to know what did it smell like where does someone with endless access actually want to be she's a fashion
04:37editor a consultant stylist extraordinaire she actually told me what was okay to wear today which
04:42I'm glad because now we look like ladies who lunch she dresses Bella Hadid Serena Williams and the
04:48first lady of New York City for her numerous appearances and she's the brains behind the must subscribe
04:53substack brain matter and depops trends spoke person so I have so many questions Gabriella hello welcome
05:02to nosedive thank you for having me oh my gosh every time you say nosedive I hear and that's going
05:08to be
05:08us into all of the information and your and your big brain quick fire game sniff or skip before we
05:15get
05:15into the proper nosedive already first and be honest okay because we've both been here for a
05:22very long time child I've never not been honest a day in my life listen I love it Manhattan streets

05:28the summertime oh skip sniffer skip skip child have you walked down the streets of Manhattan in the
05:35summertime the trash is trashing the subways are subwaying is it is there dampness in the air
05:42are we are we maybe using natural sweaters it's sewage is it sewage are the natural deodorants
05:47aluminum free but the thing is I feel like it depends on neighborhood I'm gonna hold firm on skip but
05:53you can sniff it up girl I'm it's just a little whiff not a full sniff just a little whiff
05:58okay the smell
05:59of a fresh Bottega leather bag oh sniff okay it's a calf skin and like I like a little this
06:08is actually
06:08so don't tell PETA I'm liking the cow smell I just I gotta say cow smell okay but talk to
06:13me about
06:14cow smell do you mean like are you getting barn I'm getting supple hide okay we're smelling craftsmanship
06:21we're smelling craftsmanship I'm smelling artisanal expertise okay okay um I already know what you're
06:31gonna say to this one so I already know it's a skip for me but you know a little whiff
06:37of cigarette
06:37smoke during Paris fashion week oh that's gonna be a whole sniff for me yeah big inhale it's a big
06:43inhale and let me tell you why there is a note of tobacco that feels warm like inviting absolutely
06:51cozy yeah and I feel like if I'm just walking past a cafe and everybody's outside and they're having
06:56like a little espresso and yeah a cigarette and you get a whiff of it it's like I want to
07:01go inside
07:02you're you're calling me and you're summoning me into this communal moment I think there is something
07:06very meditative I am not a smoker but I did live in Europe for an extended period of time and
07:12the
07:12smell of a fresh espresso with a cigarette at nine in the morning is just a meditative it's like incense
07:21like give me that in an incense and that's gonna be burning in my house last one sniffing your copy

07:27Lena Dunham's fame sick on the London tube oh okay yes I love the smell of paper and I gotta
07:36tell you
07:36I adored fame sick it was like this incredibly vulnerable way of talking about an experience that
07:45we all as the public as the audience had made our own assumptions about and there was just this like
07:50honesty to the way that she was telling her own story and like badassery to correct her own narrative
07:55I will sniff that book I will read that book I will sell that book on the street bootleg style
07:59were you a girls girl were you watching girls I was a girls girl I also was a girls girl
08:05I found
08:05myself and womanhood through girls which I don't know was the right path but I got to where I am
08:12today so I do have to ascribe some of my growth to that show anyway I'm so excited to get
08:17into the day
08:18with you yes I saw on Instagram that you were in Cotswold recently looking beautiful radiant like we
08:26said fabulous what were you doing there I was attending a wedding that we like to call the
08:31um Met Gala for publicists so it's Gabby Katz's wedding to a gentleman named Owen Beaufort's the old
08:36very posh wedding very posh and it was at this incredible estate and I said as I tend to do
08:42I'm like
08:42if I'm gonna travel I'm gonna travel like recreational travel was not always in my vocabulary
08:48growing up like we were a very worldly family we traveled a lot but it was not always with the
08:53intention of leisure okay so it was a trip not a vacation it was a trip not a vacation or
08:57it was
08:58like a move we moved a lot so now when I'm outside of my home I'm living it up I'm
09:04doing it all the way
09:05so I stayed at this incredible hotel there was a stable there I had this like enormous horse who was
09:12like 20 billion hands tall and we were just frolicking throughout this amazing lush greenery it just
09:19felt very bucolic and I'd never been to the cocktails before like I know London as like
09:23nitty-gritty fast everybody's partying have a pub break a pint like that's what I know about London
09:30and so going outside of it into this like pastoral kind of like small town like cottage like village
09:37cottage cottage core yeah is what the kids would say I hear I think the millennials say it I think
09:43the millennials actually created cottage core oh we're not okay got it yeah sorry that's ours that's
09:47yours that's ours that's yours yeah but I loved it and it was you know what being from a city
09:53you forget the smell of fresh air like it's it's not like a neutral smell it's like there's a fragrance
10:00to all of the like amazing lush greenery around again you know I'm into that barns I don't know
10:05what the barn smell says about me but I love her the fancy term is agrestic is it yeah I
10:12say two words
10:12coming out yeah you really are teaching me today I'm so glad it's just the abundance but the barn smell
10:17I think especially if you grew up riding horses being there like that feeling of extreme presence
10:25like when you're on an ant when you're on a horse or when you're around animals you have to be
10:29like
10:29locked in otherwise a horse is like no no no no no and to our point of fragrance and us
10:36diving in
10:36like you need to be present when you're riding a horse just like you are present when you were
10:40smelling something like it's the same like we are only living right now at this very time yeah you
10:45know yeah definitely brings you into your body yes to be riding so it's giving fresh air which I
10:52completely agree with you it could be like a little humid a little bit kind of like ozonic would
10:57you say agrestic agrestic agrestic with the barn the grass yeah yeah dare I say the little bit of poo
11:04smell you know what I mean that animal smell but rugged and alive it's like very very alive yeah
11:12definitely was this your first time going there this is my first time to the cotswels you know I think
11:16I went to the cotswels as an assistant on a photo shoot back in my vogue days but I have
11:21never gone on
11:22vacation and so it was just nice to be somewhere that felt like the slowness of it was the beauty
11:29of it instead of you know I go to a lot of I go to Jamaica all the time I've
11:32been to Japan like I go
11:33to busy places yes it was nice to be slow slow I love that well I do want to unpack
11:38that more
11:39for the people at home for the people that are listening to us already yip and yap and get deep
11:44into it but I want to know what you're up to these days you were just riding a horse yes
11:48in the
11:49countryside of England and now you're here with me yeah give us the pool tea what's going on well
11:55I typically the summer is like always my busiest season the way that fashion works is like everybody
12:00takes August off everybody who can take August off takes August off why so I think it's just like we
12:05need a break because the schedule is so punishing that we all have to align around one month okay
12:10August is nice weather we can get out yeah we don't really do like you know the the winter holidays
12:16in
12:16the same way so it's your turn to educate me can you just give me a really high level of
12:21the
12:21fashion calendar oh yes okay so we are going to four cities okay twice a year in September
12:31and again in February okay and we spend a month doing it okay fashion week is actually four weeks
12:37put together it's fashion month it's a marathon not a sprint and then we have couture in the summer
12:41okay in June July and then we also have couture in January so okay really it's like a lot I'm
12:49spending a lot of time on a plane okay and then our photo shoot schedule oftentimes you know if you're
12:54doing a the cover of a magazine a lot of times you'll travel towards a talent so that's very like
12:57LA focused okay if you're doing an editorial that's very heavy on on French brands or European brands
13:03you'll be in Europe okay you know New York has its own kind of cadence of editorial and commercial work
13:08but really we have to be transient like we got to go yeah do you have a home I have
13:12a home but like
13:13really where I feel the safest is in Terminal 8's American Airlines so I was gonna say I was like
13:20where do you go they are my people my family my longest term relationship is actually with a porter
13:25yeah at American Airlines and I'll be I'll I'll text him being like baby I don't know if I'm gonna
13:32make
13:32this bag it's cut off and he's like I got you sis and he'll print out my tags these are
13:36people who
13:37know and love me and have held me down for years now and I feel so much more comfortable in
13:43an airport
13:44or in on a plane or in a hotel than I do almost anywhere else which is like maybe something
13:49I should
13:50work on I don't think you should work on that I feel like that's a very like magical place to
13:54be
13:54because that's normally like the first gateway to hell for most people it is and you know what I also
13:59think it's it is residual adaptive behavior based on the fact that we move so much as a kid like
14:05I
14:06can be my mom was like a rolling stone a brilliant creative mind we suffered the loss of my father
14:11very
14:12very young and like we were just going with the flow and so I was moving schools and like I
14:18had to
14:18make new friends every year I had to be able to be in any room are you a little child
14:21I'm the baby of five
14:24I don't give baby girl energy to you you could be eldest sister or baby girl and I love that
14:29for me
14:29that is an amazing that's called duality okay I'm glad that we're talking about childhood because now
14:35at my ripe old millennial lady age I feel like everything that I do related to fragrance is tying back
14:40to what my eight-year-old little Asia would want and she was an agent of chaos like she needed
14:46to layer
14:47she needed body mist lotion body wash like all of it needed to be the same you know what I
14:52mean
14:52where you know exactly what you mean I was like spritz it up we got a spray we got the
14:56mist we got
14:56the aerosol deodorant we got all the things literally all of the things because we were
15:00also a little bit smelly and that's called and that's on and that's called puberty and that's
15:05on puberty and now I feel like the note that I'm really leaning into for layering because it just
15:10works like great in every season and it just gives me that sense of peace is like vanilla
15:15oh she's a saccharine girl she's like a little a little treat your treat a little but not like
15:21you know too sugar but just like she's a treat she's a treat and that has locked me into the
15:29eos
15:29vanilla cashmere trifecta you have some stuff next to you we should smell we should smell me in first
15:36class right okay you in first class literally the body lotion vanilla cashmere it also comes that's the
15:43and there's also a body wash and it just let me see here's what I'm gagging for hyaluronic acid
15:50hyaluronic acid okay can I put it on my face baby no oh right now let's not I don't listen
15:56can I do
15:56it in the air do it a little yeah and I'm like oh oh yes okay you know what I
16:04mean I'm hearing what
16:05grown up vanilla grown but she's eight year old me and 31 year old me because I start with
16:13the body wash in the shower because that is me time that is quiet time okay then I get out
16:18squeaky
16:19clean a little wet layer on the lotion and then when it is still wet I will spray the body
16:25spray on
16:25top of me so it's just like this nice locked in vanilla cashmere mist you know I mean it's giving
16:31little private car no credit limit oh I love a no credit limit you know what I mean it smells
16:37like
16:37you know when you go to your favorite hotel and then you get the big cozy robe yes and then
16:42you
16:42like shave your legs and you get in the bed and you like do little cricket feet you're like why
16:47did
16:47I know you're talking about yeah literally it is cozy unbothered she noise like noise canceling room
16:55it is that so get in on this new signature scent ritual baby I'm gonna get in on it I'm
17:00gonna fold
17:00myself into the vanilla it's cashmere it's luxury it's luxury it's all of that and don't skip on
17:06layering them you should try layering them well one thing about me she gets dry up in the airplane so

17:12need a little lotion I'm surprised that you are that this is not in your repertoire I am too and

17:18know what's crazy though I remember I don't even know if we're supposed to say this but I remember the
17:23damn the lip balm balls that is the millennial that's that was the millennial and now this is my
17:29this is your new millennials but like this is the grown-up this is the grown-up she grew with
17:33us and
17:33you can find her at evolution of smooth well if you're feeling so comfortable in all these places
17:38there must be something that kind of gives you that sense of comfort this is me laying I was like
17:44I want to hear about your love for American Airlines I want tell me about first class what's that
17:48smell like what do you have okay going on okay well here's the thing it's like we all live in
17:53a world
17:53that is like conditioned and colored by certain biases right and it can be like very difficult to
18:00exist in a black body to exist in a woman's body to exist in a fat body can we say
18:05it again right that
18:06part let's can we say it again right it is difficult to exist sometimes in marginalized bodies and so when
18:12you're in this kind of like rarefied air as some might call first class it can feel alienating it
18:19can feel like there are eyes on you like you're not supposed to be there and I've actually loved
18:23the idea and I've done this through my work I've done this socially I've done this anywhere I've been
18:27I'm like one thing I'm not going to do is shrink one thing I'm not going to do is camouflage
18:32like
18:32I'm going to be me wherever I am and I think that that's why I feel so comfortable in these
18:36places
18:36because I bring myself authentically wherever I am and so the feeling can be it can be complicated
18:45yeah but it is home to me now yeah and I feel like I deserve to be in those places
18:51I feel like
18:51I worked hard to be in those spaces and the payoff is that the nice things now can feel like
18:57the normal
18:57things yes I was reading something recently where I love learning about wisdom I have like an
19:03insatiable thirst and it can never be quenched but I need wisdom so I'm always trying to read
19:08wise phrases or just find like nuggets of wisdom everywhere and what you are talking about with
19:14it's uncomfortable to be in a black body a woman's body like a body that people don't like idealize
19:20is perfect but then stepping into a place where you feel like this is now mine my favorite quote that
19:27I've gathered this week is your desire becomes your destiny manifest it girl you know what I mean
19:33down listen like the more that you want something the more it becomes yours and I'm just like I'm so
19:39happy that you those are your places now you're the mayor you're the mayor of first class I am the
19:44mayor of first class and it's gotten me into trouble before because sometimes when I don't feel
19:47comfortable like I had an experience no people can smell that they can and it's like it's predatory and
19:53so I was just like you know what I saw a flight attendant I know over there in business I'm
19:58going to self downgrade myself and I wrote a tweet about it in order for people to feel like you
20:03never
20:03have to endure discomfort you should always prioritize your own safety and your own comfort
20:08and you should make make your home where it feels like it should be made don't like try and force
20:13yourself into anything and and I thought it was going to be like inspirational people did not like
20:16that people were like you are so spoiled the internet's a funny place the internet is the
20:23funniest city I've ever been to and I live in New York we're not okay on the internet and that's
20:28fine everyone is the mayor of their own internet and it's it shows and it shows and it shows and
20:33it
20:33shows versus everyone's the mayor when we should all be each other's neighbor would you talk to
20:37would you talk to your neighbor like that if they knew where you lived no no no no no uh

20:43yeah we're gonna talk about fragrance on a plane do you or do you not I just realized that I
20:49trafficked cured meats from Italy and I popped a salami on a plane once popped it right open and

21:01you're like complimentary notes of literally aldehydes and yeah with my salted meat there was some
21:07wood there were some notes of wood because I was wearing ball de fric okay no fragrance yeah it
21:13actually worked but I did realize like a little bit of salty salty it was a little bit of salty
21:17you know yeah cured meats but like the wood cured meats but make it fragrance yeah exactly and now we
21:23have a brand but all to say it's it was such a learning moment of like fragrance is experienced
21:29communally yes like it is there is sure do I want to smell like myself and it's it's an interesting
21:34conversation about like what one is allowed to participate in like say your comfort fragrance
21:43is like putrid oh sure that's amazing for you I'm glad you're feeling good in your body
21:47aggressive barn so say you're me say you're me and a cured meat barn is what you want to smell
21:53like
21:53absolutely um you there is a consideration of the way in which it changes your relationship to other
21:59people the dynamic that's happening in a six-person cabin so will I do salami again
22:04probably not am I bringing the burger probably not we learned and we grew from that experience
22:09and now what I do like to do which to some people could be equally offensive is I do bring
22:14a pillow
22:15spray okay for my pillow lavender citrus jasmine oh jasmine which is oh you hate a jasmine no I
22:22love a jasmine I love a jasmine I'm just I know that people don't love a jasmine I love that
22:27a jasmine
22:27is a little and that makes sense also because jasmine is indolic which also like if you really get
22:33into the chemistry it got a little poo smelled on some good first of all I sound like the most
22:40repulsive you're incredible no you're a fragrance you thought you were not a fragrance girl and you
22:45are this is your fragrance and lightning I'm here to just be your fragrance shepherd you are a perfume
22:48girl do that be my fragrance conciliary we love a little hand hug um jasmine is a crazy choice though
22:55I we are we are kin no we are the same but on a plane people would see you as
23:03public enemy number
23:04one it's a mist though it was like it's like it's a very delicate and you know where I got
23:08it actually
23:08it's the pillow mist from the rosewood london okay which is tell me about typically my finding it and
23:15getting it well I didn't realize okay so it was when I started leaning into my true purpose of yeah
23:20exclusively traveling in a luxury way that I is that a chapter in your memoir it should be it
23:27should be like and now I lay my head down upon the down yeah down upon the down and now
23:32we're cooking
23:34um but no I didn't realize that there are things like pillow menus and like you know which they have
23:39at the Bulgari hotel do you want a firm do you want a soft do you want a jasmine do
23:44you want a da da
23:45so I discovered it at the rosewood and I was like it really did almost like maybe like a
23:49eucalyptus would calm it doesn't it's more activating than that but in a way that I feel
23:55like makes me dream oh you want like that REM sleep I want that REM sleep but I want an
24:00active
24:00sleep like I don't need to be knocked out on the plane I also think I'm the kind of person
24:04who
24:04doesn't like to sleep through the entire flight like I want to enjoy my flight I think that the
24:07plane is somewhere that I feel at home I want to watch movies I want to I was gonna ask
24:11I was like
24:12what does that mean because I love us I'm like get me to bed immediately interesting okay well I'm
24:17holistically into the experience I have a I call it the poor man's Cosmo explain to me baby what you
24:26need is you need a can of cranberry apple juice and then it's a ginger ale okay then it's a
24:30lime
24:30wedge and it's a tiny little nip of Tito's vodka it's a Cosmo if you have to call it a
24:35Cosmo I've
24:36been drinking a version of that the virgin version of that okay since I was five my dad made that
24:44for
24:44me who was a Jamaican man and we'd be on air Jamaica and he was like this is your juice
24:48now
24:48it was Sprite you have to put it with Sprite not Tito's I was five well y'all do y
24:57'all y'all do like
24:58the rum cake though even at the five years old we were definitely in into the rum cake unfortunately
25:05um okay but I love all of the travel we're going to talk more about travel but I also want
25:09to talk
25:09about fashion because like I said we look like ladies who lunch and we would do a disservice if we
25:14were not talking about the cute cute ways what I think are the cute cute ways of fashion yeah and
25:19quiet luxury that trend took over a few years ago I don't know how I feel about it I feel
25:25like it's
25:25kind of over but it's also evolving into something hybrid with AI and Pinterest but what do you think
25:30is replacing that I think to your point about AI and I think like the human impulse to want to
25:39hold tight to individuality to creative expression to things that cannot be mechanically reproduced or
25:45artificially conceived of that quiet luxury was formulaic and and the reason why it was so prolific
25:53was because it made dressing very modular and very easy you could be in style without having
25:58personal style like it flattened the dimension weight of that was scripture well say it again this is
26:07what I mean like it was really just it was a way to feel that you were engaging with fashion
26:12without
26:12having to take any risk it was a very risk averse visual language and I think that that was a
26:19reaction to
26:19this like hyper conservatization of the world like the idea of making any noise was like not something you're
26:28trying to do in Trump era 2.0 or any Trump era and so it like really reigns supreme there
26:36like you could
26:36fit in without having to stand out now I think that we're reverting back to doing the most taking up
26:43space being ourselves because we're desperate to hold on to our humanity and our individuality because
26:48everything is becoming artificial we're in this world that where AI is creating facsimiles of like human
26:56expression but like nothing that's quite true to the human experience right nothing that's raw nothing
27:02that's raw like everything is quite literally engineered and it can approach human taste it can
27:09approach style and individuality but it like can't quite get there so I think people are reverting back
27:15to their their own predilections their own tastes and that's what I hope for and I might just be saying
27:20this to like convince myself that maximalism is back because that's obviously my own personal your flavor
27:25my own flavor of freak but I do I do sense it I sense like the need and the want
27:31in the fashion
27:32sector to to to freak out to freak out to be different I feel it in perfume too and what
27:39you're
27:39saying resonates a lot because even during that quiet luxury and I think perfume maybe is a couple of
27:45years or like there's like a drag from what happens in fashion and beauty and then like perfume gets kind
27:51of dragged along with it and it's the last thing to really change can I tell you something what
