00:00Good morning, we are live at the Sportsbook.
00:03Gets you ready for football season when you got all this action going on.
00:07They got the contest sign up at Circa.
00:09We go through our college football playoff picks whenever we're out here.
00:13You gave yours out in our number one.
00:15I'm going to give mine coming up at 8.35.
00:18Who are the 12 teams? Who wins it all?
00:20As we look ahead to this Tiger weekend, off day today,
00:24you've got Scooble Friday and potentially Otani Sunday.
00:29It's not official, but all of the prognosticators
00:33and all those that are quote-unquote in the know
00:35believe that he is going to be back on the mound soon
00:38and they are projecting that it will be Sunday at Comerica Park.
00:43Our question, if you're interested in going to the ballpark this weekend
00:46but can only go to one game,
00:48would you go to Scooble on Friday or Shohei on Sunday?
00:51We'll just say he's pitching Sunday.
00:54What's the answer?
00:55To me, it's an easy.
00:57I'm going to go with my franchise player.
00:58The guy that I started a franchise with, that's Shohei Otani.
01:02And if you're talking about going to see the greatest baseball player of all time,
01:10how many times does he actually – now, he will be in the game Friday night.
01:15He'll be in the game Saturday.
01:16But you get a chance to see something that is unbelievably unique,
01:22a pitcher that is a dominant pitcher and is also a dominant hitter,
01:28doing both in the same game.
01:31And I don't know that they're – in my mind, there's no question.
01:34I've seen Tarek Scooble pitch.
01:36I've seen him pitch a bunch in Comerica.
01:38And I am sick and tired of all Scooble topics.
01:42If I had a chance to buy a ticket to go see a player on an opposing team,
01:49I'm going to go see Shohei Otani.
01:51And by the way, that's kind of where we've gone with this season
01:53is you're going to see the other team.
01:55Sure.
01:56I mean, that's what you do throughout the course of a season.
01:58You're going to see your team play, but then you take, okay,
02:01who are they playing and what games do I want to go see?
02:06The Dodgers are coming to town.
02:08They've got a lot of big name and star players.
02:11Who are you going to see?
02:13See, I went the other way.
02:15I'm planning on going Friday.
02:16I think there's emotions with Scooble.
02:19There's an attachment.
02:20People have feelings about that game much more than they do the oddity
02:24and the phenomenon that is Shohei.
02:27You know, he might only throw an inning or two.
02:30And he could come back to Comerica again in his career.
02:33Scooble gets one initial return to Comerica Park
02:38and the emotions that come with it.
02:39Some will boo him.
02:41Some will cheer him.
02:41Will they show a video montage and give him his moment?
02:45There's more riding emotionally on that game than Sunday.
02:50And I am curious how fans are going to react.
02:52I think some of it is going there to see and take in what the reception is.
02:58There's a curiosity.
02:59Yeah, but I can hear that.
03:00You won't hear it and you won't feel it like you would.
03:02As you do, being there in person is obviously always the best.
03:06But you'll be able to hear a lot of what's going on at home from your couch Friday night.
03:12And I would much rather be there to watch the greatest player of all time.
03:18He doesn't come to Comerica Park all the time.
03:20And you don't know if, yes, when he comes, he's going to hit.
03:24But you don't know if you're going to be able to see the ultimate package of a guy that can
03:29pitch and hit in the same game.
03:31Because it may be one of those where he throws.
03:33And part of why you might not want to go see Shohei, he's going to be on a pitch count.
03:39Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
03:40Is that going to be two innings?
03:42And then he's pulled.
03:44Is it going to be four innings?
03:45Who knows?
03:45But your point is you just want to see it, even if it's for an inning.
03:47You want to see this guy who's arguably the greatest of all time doing stuff Babe Ruth was doing.
03:51But now he's doing 50 steals, 50 homers, and he's a stud on the mound.
03:55I just don't think you're getting a stud on the mound on Sunday if he's in for eight batters, 12
04:01batters.
04:02Yeah, I mean, I think he'll be in for a little bit more than that.
04:04But, yeah, I mean, that's the drawback.
04:08But you also get a chance to say, you know, I was there.
04:10And maybe he has one of those special performances at the plate where, hey, he leads off.
04:14I mean, Valdez is going to be on the mound, I believe.
04:17On Sunday?
04:18Yeah.
04:18And so he might lead off with a home run and then come out and pitch, you know, great for
04:26the first three innings.
04:27It's unique what he does.
04:28But he's 32, not 42.
04:30He's incentivized to play another decade of Major League Baseball.
04:33The Dodgers come every year.
04:35How long is he going to actually be pitching at this level?
04:38It's a fair question.
04:39But I'm assuming he's going to do both for a while, and they're going to come every year.
04:43And maybe it's not every year you can see him, but there will be another chance to see him do
04:47both at Comerica Park.
04:48Well, it's the same thing for Scooble.
04:49You won't get a chance to see him the first time pitched in Comerica.
04:51The first is the significance.
04:53Yeah, but it just doesn't move any of them for me.
04:56AJ's talking about pit in your stomach, awkward.
04:58I just think there's a more interesting story with him on Friday.
05:01And sure, for AJ, for the guys that are going to be at the plate.
05:04Well, for fans.
05:05It's going to be different.
05:06And for fans, it will be different.
05:07I don't know that they're going to have the pit in the stomach that AJ will have or Scott Harris
05:12will have
05:12or anyone else will have of seeing them for the first time wearing a Dodgers uniform
05:18or wearing any uniform, for that matter, across from them.
05:21But I think for fans, for me, I would just rather go see.
05:25I'm just so sick and tired of talking about Scooble.
05:27I don't think you're alone.
05:28Some of the early texts will take some calls, 248-539-9797.
05:32It says, what a surprise.
05:34The troll host wants to see Scooble more.
05:37We've seen Scooble pitch.
05:38Who cares?
05:40If you think I'm the troll host, wait until tomorrow.
05:42Yeah, you're going to have double trolls.
05:45Rieger rivals anybody.
05:47Tech says, John, you go Sunday.
05:49Here's another reason.
05:50Tickets Friday night are double the cost.
05:52I'd pay half price to see the generational talent.
05:56Generational?
05:57I mean, you're talking about it's an opportunity to see the greatest baseball player of all time play.
06:04And he's playing in your stadium only a handful of times every single year.
06:13And you have a chance to see him do, in his prime, what he does best.
06:19And that is both pitch and hit.
06:24If Otani pitches one inning, it's better than going Friday, Bill and Canton.
06:29Yep.
06:30Now, this is, I bought tickets beginning of the year for Sunday's game.
06:33Full intention of seeing Shohei.
06:35I could care less about Scooble.
06:37There you go.
06:38I mean, you had no idea how the pitching matchup would be.
06:40But, yeah.
06:41Is this really a topic?
06:42Otani all day?
06:43No debate.
06:43If the Tigers play a Scooble Memorial video, how could you possibly take the organization seriously after that?
06:50Oh, I don't think there'll be anything of that nature.
06:52I think it will be interesting to see the tip of the cap from the fans.
06:57But I don't think there'll be anything like that from the organization.
07:03I think they will.
07:05Really?
07:05I think they'll do a video for Scooble.
07:07Two-time Cy Young Award winner.
07:09Thanks, Scoobs, for all you gave.
07:12Back-to-back playoff appearances.
07:13I expect a video.
07:14You can judge him however you'd like.
07:15I expect a video.
07:17And I expect most people to cheer him.
07:19I don't disagree with that.
07:21So if most people are going to cheer him, then it's not tone-deaf for them to do a video.
07:25I'm not saying whether I agree with it or not, but that is my expectation.
07:29You'll get some booze, trust me.
07:30But I think you're going to get more cheers.
07:32Part of that's why I want to go and see it.
07:33Did the Lions do that when Stafford came back?
07:36And I'm not talking about the playoff game, but for the regular season game.
07:39Well, did he come back in the regular season?
07:41They played out there early in Dan Campbell's tenure.
07:45The first return for Stafford was the playoff game.
07:48Yes.
07:49Right.
07:49Then the regular season game was later.
07:51Yeah, correct.
07:52They did not do it for the playoff game.
07:54No, I know.
07:54That changes the equation.
07:56Yes.
07:56But during the regular season, I don't think they did that either.
07:59And maybe it was, hey, time had passed.
08:01I think that's more of what it is.
08:02This is so fresh.
08:03This is weeks later.
08:05Yeah.
08:05Well, hold on.
08:05Let's go to the same organization.
08:07And another great pitcher that pitched her.
08:10Did the Tigers do this for Justin Verlander on his return?
08:12I don't remember.
08:16If someone remembers, let us know.
08:18I don't remember.
08:19Tom, do you think they do a video for him?
08:23I think it's possible.
08:24I mean, the stuff that he did, yeah, I don't think they will because I think it's too fresh.
08:33A texter wants to know if he'll get the full Stafford treatment, which I guess implies we're booing his kids.
08:41Are we doing that on Friday night?
08:44We're booing Scoobal's very young children?
08:46No.
08:46Full Stafford treatment?
08:48No.
08:49I know you'd be okay with that.
08:51He's the enemy, John.
08:52If you were sitting in the stands, what would your response be when Tarek Scoobal walks to the mound?
08:58Bottom of the first.
09:00I'm not going to give him a standing O, but I also don't think I'd boo him.
09:03I'm sure whatever it is, we'll hear it on Kelly Scoobal's podcast.
09:09It's complicated.
09:10We talked about how his legacy is complicated, right?
09:13There's more pretzels sold at Tigers games than there probably are at Lions games.
09:18We talked about how Scoobal's legacy is complicated.
09:20I have no issue with him wanting the biggest deal possible.
09:24I hated how publicly he seemed to want to play both sides and that he put his foot in his
09:31mouth almost every time he spoke in the last season.
09:34It didn't make him likable.
09:36At the same time, can you separate that he was a two-time Cy Young Award winner, that he's the
09:40best pitcher we've had since Verlander and one of the greats that we've ever seen throw a baseball in Detroit,
09:45and he left for business reasons?
09:48I mean, that's why it's so complicated.
09:49If he had just maybe been more honest or more open as opposed to this like Boris bot, he would
09:55have been more likable.
09:56That's why it's complicated.
09:57Well, and on top of that, it's three years of trade deadlines.
10:02Exhaustion.
10:03Yeah, it's just exhaustion, and honestly, I'm exhausted with any topic of Tarek Scoobal, and now we're forced with it
10:12again.
10:13I don't want to be present.
10:14I can watch it at home, and I can keep it on.
10:18I can turn it off.
10:18I can mute it.
10:19I can do whatever I want, but then on Sunday, I can go see, and I just go back to,
10:24I can go see the greatest baseball player of all time.
10:26Anytime he comes to town, even if he's not pitching, if he's just batting, I'm intrigued and may want to
10:32go.
10:32Just to tell my grandkids someday, and I would want to take Jack.
10:36I would want to take Teddy, the kids, so that they can say, yeah, I saw Shohei Ohtani play.
10:42Does anybody in the future say, well, I saw Tarek Scoobal in his first game back at Comerica Park?
10:50I don't think the significance is there.
10:52Sunday holds up more over your lifetime.
10:54Hey, the last thing I wanted to say on Scoobal and the reception, if you're someone who boos him, I
10:57imagine a lot of it is about the delay in the elbow.
11:01Because that is the thing that I think would bother you the most as a fan.
11:04He missed a critical, well, maybe it's that too, but I think missing a critical month, the worst month of
11:09their season,
11:09because he knew something was off but wanted to make sure he got his money this year, that directly sabotaged
11:15his team.
11:16That is, I think, the thing you could be most irate about.
11:19I think if you're booing, there's a lot of different reasons why you could boo.
11:23And it may just be the ultimate frustration.
11:24It could be the contract.
11:26It could be the elbow.
11:28It could be Scott Boris.
11:29Like, you're going to be booing him for a number of different reasons.
11:32I'm not saying I would go and boo him.
11:34I would probably, I wouldn't have much of a reaction.
11:38Verlander got a tribute video, multiple standing ovations when he came back to Detroit in 2018.
11:43He was much more likable.
11:44He was more likable.
11:46And he had some, I mean, Scooble had a couple good playoff moments, like Tom was at one of them.
11:51But Verlander had some, like, eight inning, double digit, shutout, stud performances and gotta have it games.
11:59Game five against Oakland.
12:00I think a couple game fives against Oakland.
12:02I also think, you know, the old saying, time heals all wounds.
12:06If his first return was next year, then I think when, if you've had more time to sit on it,
12:15this is so recent.
12:17Like, you're picking at an open wound.
12:19That's a good point.
12:20Tech says, if a girl cheats on you, do you remember the good times and all the cool things she
12:24did?
12:24No, she cheated on you.
12:26That's a great comparison.
12:28Do we think Scooble cheated on us?
12:30Or he wasn't going to re-sign and wanted to hit free agency?
12:33I think he had wandering eyes.
12:36But he didn't cheat, but he was, like, liking other girls' photos.
12:40He emotionally cheated.
12:41Yeah, right.
12:42248-539-9797.
12:45Wow, we got to that conclusion.
12:46We can take some calls and texts.
12:48We'll get Heather's news.
12:49And then the college football playoff picks.
12:51You can rewind for John's.
12:52I'll give you mine at 835.
12:54It's 97-1.
