01:16tonight i'm dr nika and today we're opening the file of one of cinema's most psychologically
01:22precise villains a man park chan boot built not it wasn't as a monster but a mirror park chan's old
01:32boy came out in 2003 and it's not an easy watch i'm going to be upfront about that this film
01:40deals with
01:42incest sexual ablations suicide and psychological torture and it doesn't do any of this easily it weaponizes them
01:53every disturbing element is low-bearing if you haven't seen it i'll give you what you need to follow the
02:01psychology it won the granbury at canes roger ebru described this film that strips bare the depth of the human
02:10heart
02:10that's exactly what we're doing today the basic setup odias is an unremarkable businessman who gets kidnapped
02:21one night and locked in a private prison a hotel room for 15 years and there's no explanation for that
02:31and he didn't have contact with the outside world just tv dumplings and four walls then one day he's released
02:40still no explanation a clock starts ticking wu jin gives him five days to figure out why he was
02:49imprisoned with the promise that wu jin will kill himself if he solves it that premise alone is unhinged
02:57what makes old boy a masterpiece is that the why turns out to have nothing to do with punishment
03:05it was never a prison sentence it was a preparation daisu was being punished for what he did he was
03:13manufactured into a weapon that made wu jin finish his plan and that plan took 20 years of carefully
03:22methodical construction that's our patient lee wu jin played by yuji tai i don't know extort with his
03:32extraordinary stillness the composure that somehow makes it more unsettling than rage would be he's
03:43he's immaculate he's the kind of man that looks like he's never had a problem in his life
03:50except he's had exactly one one that he decided is going to define everything we need to establish the
03:59facts before we could analyze the psychology because old boy gives us to us in pieces and in a specific
04:07way that's designed to manipulate your sympathy so let me lay it out straight wu jin and daisu attended the
04:16same high school they weren't friends they barely knew each other wu jin was quiet reserved and forgettable
04:26that many of their classmates didn't even remember him his sister sua was the opposite outgoing visible
04:36known and one day daisu stumbled upon something he wasn't supposed to see
04:42he witnessed wu jin and sua in a sexual encounter he didn't know that they were siblings he didn't
04:50even understand it he just thought it was a girl who was being risky so what teenagers do he mentioned
04:58it
04:58to juhan before transferring schools almost as an afterthought that's it that's the inciting incident
05:07an offhand comment something so stupid that he literally forgot by adulthood he didn't do it out
05:17of malice he didn't even know who these people were to each other rumors don't care about intent juhan
05:25spread it and then others spread it like rumors do and by the end it spread all across the school
05:32the
05:32story was that sua was pregnant that she was promiscuous and ruined here's where the clinical layer gets
05:41thick sua began to believe it she became consumed by the rumor and according to wu jin's account she
05:51developed what we call clinically call the pseudosiesis a false pregnancy a psychosomatic condition where a
06:00person develops physical symptoms of pregnancy including extended abdomen missed periods even nausea
06:09with no actual fetus this is real it's documented and it happens and happens entirely in cases where
06:20extreme psychological distress is there the mind is so convinced that the body should be experiencing
06:27that the body starts to perform it let me put that in plain language the social violence of that rumor
06:36was so
06:37total so persuasive that that it got into suan's body that's how destroyed she was on july 5th wu jin
06:47and
06:48suan went to the hop jump dam she jumped he was there but he caught her hand and she convinced
06:57him to let her fall to her death he watched his sister fall and he was holding her
07:05he let her go because she asked him to the autopsy found that she wasn't pregnant
07:11she died for a rumor a lie a teenage boy's offhand remark and wu jin was standing there holding the
07:21empty space where her hand had been now here's where i put my clinical hat and i want you to

07:30because this is where the character becomes genuinely instructive what does that experience do to a person
07:39let's talk about what grief so what is supposed to do prolonged grief disorder research which only got
07:47formally recognized in dsm5tr describes grief as having a trajectory acute grief is intense yearning
07:58preoccupation sadness disorientation over time the acute phase is supposed to
08:07give way to give way to integration but the person builds a life that accommodates the life they don't
08:13forget it they carry it they continue what we know from research sheer purgeson the whole complicated grief
08:24literature is that roughly at seven to twenty percent of bereaved individuals develop prolonged grief disorder
08:32grief that doesn't integrate grief that stays acute and where the yearning and preoccupation and the
08:40inability to accept reality and loss remains at crisis levels that could be years or forever
08:53symptom cluster one label chin is a case study of what happens when a prolonged grief disorder is left
09:01completely untreated and is instead given a purpose pgd doesn't just hurt it reorganizes you it takes
09:10a verbal form and builds a new identity around the wound everything you do and everything you want

10:16entire narrative for daisu the sole cause of suwa's death he erased himself from the equation completely
10:25clinically this is called externalization it's a defense mechanism specifically a primitive one meaning
10:34it's the kind that we associated with earlier psychological development or with a psyche with
10:41enormous pressure that can't afford inward where pain is real but the merchant is too threatening to
10:50hold so it gets projected outward onto a target everything bad that happened becomes that person's
10:57own fault wujan can't afford to be guilty if he acknowledges that he was having an affair with his
11:05sister that the relationship itself was the source of the shame that destroyed her or that he was holding
11:13her hand and let go there's no revenge plot there's only unbearable weight that what he contributed to his
11:23sister's death so he doesn't go there he builds a reality that he never has to go there daisu is
11:31that
11:32reality wujan is an instrument of injustice this isn't self-deception in a casual sense this is a full
11:41structural renovation of cause and effect maintained over decades enforced by the entire architecture of
11:50his adult life symptom cluster three the revenge planned as a symptom in itself we talk about revenge
11:59revenge in pop psychology like it's a choice like it's a deliberate decision that people make after
12:07they're wrong there's a substantial body of research baumeister's work co its earlier psychological framework
12:17the more recent forensic literature that frames revenge obsession not as a decision but as a symptom
12:26as a symptom the way the psyche kind of restores what we call narcissistic injury
12:34narcissistic injury has nothing to do with arrogance it's about the self-structure collapsing under a wound
12:43when something destroys your sense of who you are and violates your core identity so completely that you can't
12:51integrate it the psyche reacts for some people particularly those with narcissistic or paranoid traits
13:01the reaction is revenge not impulsive revenge methodical long thought-out revenge the goal sometimes isn't
13:14to hurt to hurt the other person it's restore your themselves when it's shattered and prove the wound can be
13:22answered and the universe can make sense again through
13:26their intervention wujin's wound is this the person who he loved most in the world died because of a rumor
13:35and the rumor came from a
13:36person who didn't even care enough to remember that's the unbearable part desu forgot he caused the death of li
13:45the suol and he forgot about it he moved on he had a wife
13:51a daughter a whole life desu was out there just living that asymmetry of impact is one of the most
14:00psychologically
14:01poisonous experiences a human being a human being can have research on betrayal trauma and injustice
14:10sensitivity consistently shows that that wound festers and it it isn't just the harm it's dispersion
14:18when the person who hurt you doesn't even know they did it the need for recognition becomes consuming
14:26you can't be made whole by their suffering alone they have to know they have to feel the weight of
14:34what
14:34they did and they have to hurt in proportion wujin doesn't just want desu dead he wants desu to understand
14:45he wants him to carry the knowledge the way wujin has carried it that's why the plan is so elaborate
14:52it and specific and it's personal it's symmetry wujin's version of symmetry that's the most frightening
15:03thing about it and let me be really clear as a psychologist wujin isn't a psychopath people throw
15:11that word around too easily a primary psychopath is in a shallow affect persistent callousness and a
15:20fundamental lack of remorse they don't feel the grief wujin feels everything the whole plan
15:29is is the grief he's operating from the feeling that never stopped that's the opposite of psychopathy
15:37what we're actually looking at is the constellation of prolonged grief disorder with traumatic
15:44bereavement features the loss of suwa wasn't just a bereavement it was a traumatic death witnessed
15:54sudden and marked by wujin's own participation he was holding her hand that's specific feature being
16:05per being there at the death and being unable to prevent it in his case actively releasing her was
16:13a rager risk factor for complicated chronic unresolvable grief guilt and grief become infused and because
16:23the grief can't be processed the nothing can move i'm also putting vulnerable narcissistic traits
16:31with differential here the kind driven not by grandiosity but by an inability to tolerate
16:39any result on itself the fragility of control the way even a phone conversation of someone calling his
16:49sister a slut sends him into a kill rage his sense of self is entirely wrapped around suwa and around
16:58the identity of the person who has to avenger any event of that narrative whoever however small is
17:06catastrophic we also see deep obsessional thinking that overlaps with persistent depressive patterns his
17:15presentation exceeds any signal diagnostic category he's a man whose entire psychic structure was rebuilt after
17:25a catastrophic loss into a mechanism of revenge there's more than that's more than this and there's one more
17:35clinical trait here this is the bond with his sister itself the relationship it's not healthy
17:42there was a profound power imbalance she said no in points the film doesn't romanticize it but it's
17:52it's clinically significant that wu jin's grief isn't just about losing his sister it's about losing an entire
17:59attachment figure who was also an object of desire that creates a different profile that's essentially
18:08impossible to process in any normal social context he couldn't tell people what he lost he couldn't be
18:16comforted for it or honor honor her publicly the loss is unspeakable and that isolation sealed the tomb
18:27around him social support and being able to tell a story are among the strongest protective factors against
18:35chronic grief wu jin had none of that and i want to spend some time on wu jin's act what
18:44he actually does
18:45because if you look at it through a clinical lens it's not the behavior of a rational man executing a
18:52revenge
18:53fantasy it's the behavior of a person trying to recreate a controlled condition the experience that destroyed him
19:03he waits until desu has a daughter he doesn't move until mido's birth born he needs that child the
19:13mirror image of his own situation of suah to exist before he can begin that's not strategic that's
19:23psychological he needs the symmetry to be complete he uses hypnosis to engineer a relationship between
19:32her father and his daughter he makes desu fall in love with mido he orchestrates incest this is the part
19:42where it's generally hard to metabolize even clinically what wu jin is doing here is creating
19:49force parallel he's saying you think what i felt was wrong then you do it then you live in it
19:58and then
20:00you tell me if it's monstrous this isn't just revenge this is psychotic level of projection he's
20:08so defensive against his own guilt and grief that his externalized and reenacted it on another person
20:16he's making desu perform of wu jin so that the shame can live somewhere else that's outside him
20:22then after all of that he reveals it he rips the secret open he forces desu to know knowing is
20:33the
20:33thing the whole plan hinges on the moment of knowing not on desu suffering of the abstract but
20:42on the specific shattering experience of finding out that their love is contaminated that that's the
20:50thing that you trust the most is the thing that destroys you wu jin wants desu to feel exactly what
20:59it
20:59is how it is to have a secret love turn into a weapon to be told what you thought was
21:05real was
21:06engineered to have the floor disappear under the thing you were most sure of that's the whole
21:14architecture it's not punishment it's education and psychology of wu jin's own wound this is the scene
21:24that makes wu jin one of the great tragic figures in cinema it's it's not because he's a great villain
21:33or he's not a great villain great tragic figure he walks to the elevator he's just completed at 20 years
21:42of executed plan perfectly days to obliterate it and he gets in the doors close and he smiles and then
21:53the memory hits him the damn suah's hand in his the look on her face the fall and then he
22:03starts to cry
22:04uncontrollable tears he falls apart and then he's sobbing drooling making noises that aren't even
22:12dignified and park chin holds that shot because what you're watching is 20 years of suppressed grief
22:21arriving all at once the plan was the wall between wujan and that and in that moment the plan was
22:30keeping
22:30the grief from leaping and now the plan is done and there's nothing left between him and july 5th the
22:39doors open he's already pressed the gun onto his head he doesn't shoot himself because he got what he
22:48wanted he does it because what he wanted was never what he needed he needed to grieve he needed two
22:57decades ago but what actually happened it wasn't the version that he was the villain but a version where a
23:07young man washed his sister you know he needed someone to sit with him and spend his rest of his
23:17life running away from that image and making it someone else's fault he needed the thing he could never
23:24have to be able to say out loud who she was to him and to be met with something other
23:31than disgust
23:33he never got that so he built a machine instead and when the machine ran out he had nothing left
23:42this is the clinical truth of old boys trying to deliver revenge isn't a grief response revenge is a
23:52grief refusal it's the refusal to accept that the loss is real that the dead stay dead but the wound
24:01is
24:01yours to carry rather than someone else to answer for wu jin spent 20 years for refusing to grieve and
24:10it
24:10cost him exactly everything wu jin earns a classification of calling architecturally terrifying and it's not
24:22because what he's done as horrific as it is but what he represents structurally is where he it gets you
24:30he's what happens when grief is given resources and time instead of a witness he's what human beings are
24:39capable of when the need for the wound to mean something is stronger than the need to live he's every
24:47person who ever decided that the way they were hurt was the most important factor about them taken to
24:55its terminal conclusion the horror of wu jin isn't the incest it was the elevator and it was all of

25:06meticulous devastating move instead in the end she's still gone and he's still standing in the dam 20 years of
25:16architecture and planning it's still there the grief is still there where he left it what park chan mook
25:24understood when he built this character and what i think gets missed in most readings about old boy is
25:32the film about revenge is that it's that wu jin is primarily antagonist he's a case study in what
25:40unprocessed traumatic grief does when it's given a container the container he chose was revenge
25:48he could have chosen addiction or isolation or illness anything anything that people use but he chose a 20
26:02year old plan because that plan gave shape to something shapeless it gave a future to a person who
26:10couldn't imagine one that's the part that implicates you not not if you were a su but wu jin what
26:21if you have
26:21something in you that you've never let meet grief something you've been routing through anger and control
26:29or distance or the story that someone else is responsible for something you can't face
26:36what's your plan what are you building instead of warning grief demands a witness li wu jin had none
26:46and the world around him and the world and old boy paid the price for it let me know in
