John and Adriana discuss how the churches she experienced gradually shifted from traditional Bible-focused Christianity toward charismatic practices, emotional worship, encounters, deliverance, speaking in tongues, apostolic covering, spiritual warfare, and increasing expectations of submission to church leadership. Adriana describes how the transition happened slowly enough that practices once considered unusual eventually began to feel normal.

Adriana also shares how guilt, repeated church attendance expectations, emotional pressure, leadership culture, financial demands, and promises of spiritual breakthroughs led her to question what she was experiencing. After returning to Scripture and encountering teaching that addressed Word of Faith and related movements, she began reexamining those ideas and describes the peace she found in a less emotionally demanding approach to church.

00:31Hello, and welcome to another episode of the William Branham Historical Research Podcast.
00:36I'm your host, John Collins, the author and founder of William Branham Historical Research
00:40at william-branham.org, and with me I have my very special guest, Adriana Lobo-Arrea,
00:46former member of the Charismatic Movement.
00:49Adriana, I hope I said it correctly.
00:52I have trouble rolling the R's, but I did try.
00:55Maybe if you could tell everybody your name and a little bit about yourself.
00:59All right.
01:00Well, Adriana is my name.
01:03I'm Costa Rican, so I was born in Costa Rica.
01:07I lived there for a long time, and I moved to England about seven to eight years ago.
01:13And I grew up in the Christian church, since it's all I remember, since I was a child.
01:20So, and I saw these transitions from a very biblical, non-charismatic to charismatic church.
01:29So, that's kind of my story.
01:31Well, I'm interested to unpack that.
01:33I was in a—when we left the movement that we escaped, the Branham Movement, I was in a
01:39church, a particular one, that I could also see that it was going towards that direction.
01:43I don't think it ever ended up there, but I was alarmed whenever I was watching things happen
01:48that really matched some of the things that I saw in the Pentecostal charismatic movement
01:55that were unhealthy.
01:56There were things that they could have matched that were healthy, but they chose to match
01:59the unhealthy ones.
02:01And so, maybe you could tell us what brought you into the movement and what you started to see.
02:07I didn't come into the movement by choice.
02:11It just happened.
02:13Basically, as I said, I grew up in a Christian church, well, Christian household.
02:19As far as I remember, that church was very biblical, non-charismatic, a bit legalistic, if anything.
02:29And when there was a new pastor that came, things started to change.
02:34And she was a younger and newer pastor.
02:37I don't recall this very well.
02:40This is more like my mom telling me, but I can remember, confirm what she told me.
02:48And this new pastor started bringing guest speakers who brought these ideas of speaking in tongues
02:55and healing.
02:56And then he started bringing new music and modern music and more happy music, I would say.
03:05And all of these things, like, at the beginning, some people were a bit opposed to it.
03:11But most people liked it.
03:13And they were sent to receive it with open arms.
03:16And they really liked it, I guess, enjoyed it.
03:20But the charismatic gifts, if I could say that, was not practice as such, but it was kind of like
03:30little by little being shared with the church.
03:37It happened that several years passed.
03:40And then people, I believe, were being desensitized to it, because it wasn't like an abrupt transition.
03:49It was very little.
03:50And I think most people, even though they had doubts about it based on the Bible, they just
03:57felt like it was the norm.
04:00It was normal.
04:01And it was a thing to do next.
04:04Like, everybody was doing it.
04:06Maybe that's right, and we'll do it, even though people who studied the Bible at my church,
04:13perhaps, yeah, they didn't feel too comfortable about it, but they still want, they didn't
04:20think too much about it, because at the end of the day, everybody was doing it.
04:24And the pastor was very charismatic in personality.
04:29So if he said it was right, we just followed.
04:32So that's kind of like my story when I was my upbringing, in a sense, and eventually that
04:41pastor left, and then a proper Pentecostal pastor was brought to the church.
04:47And the funny thing is, he wasn't very open to crazy stuff.
04:54He was very biblical, but still the church was already going on that route.
05:03And especially when something that, I'm not sure if that happens in the U.S., but there
05:09is something called Encuentros.
05:11It's called Encounters.
05:13It's a very popular thing, and I don't know if you've ever heard of it.
05:16We do have that here, and it's funny because it goes in multiple directions.
05:21The Pentecostal charismatic movement, as I have been studying it, there are certain aspects
05:27of it that match spiritualism, and there are encounters that are very spiritualist-type
05:32encounters.
05:33And then, on the other hand, we have heard stories of people who have different types
05:38of encounters.
05:39What specifically are the encounters you're referring to, though?
05:43It's a specific type of spiritual retreat for a weekend.
05:49Among other things, I'm actually studying spiritual warfare, and I'm working with Franny
05:55Nance.
05:55We're getting deep into the spiritual warfare stuff, and they have all kinds of weird things.
06:01I was watching a video yesterday.
06:03The lady said that there was a coven of witches circling around her Airbnb while she was trying
06:09to stay there.
06:10And that type of mentality just breeds this type of doctrine.
06:15Yeah, indeed.
06:16So, yeah, I think we were okay to some extent, not still practicing the crazy stuff.
06:24But when these encounters came to the church, everything went down, I believe, because they
06:34just brought this new idea of this spiritual retreat, sober weekend.
06:41They take away everything from you.
06:43You can't communicate with anybody while you are during this retreat for the weekend.
06:48And it's incredibly emotional.
06:51It's exhausting emotionally.
06:54They just bombard you with, you have to forgive, and guilt.
06:59And they make you remember all your sins from the past.
07:05And you are incredibly vulnerable on those retreats.
07:10And everyone is a target, from children to adults, couples.
07:14Everyone has an encounter or has the choice to go to an encounter.
07:18And there's a lot of frenzy and people shouting and screaming.
07:23And a lot of it is like deliverance as well.
07:28People rolling on the floor because they're taking the demons out of them.
07:33It's very manipulative.
07:35And then everybody comes back from it, all high for Jesus, high for God, and shouting,
07:41screaming, and jumping in the church.
07:43And I started noticing, like, a lot of those people, if not the majority or all of them,
07:51after a couple of months, they were gone or they were just not feeling it anymore.
07:57Because it was all feelings.
07:59It was all emotions.
08:01And I think that really made it worse in that church.
08:07Because then we started inviting all this spiritual warfare thing and all this speaking in tongues
08:15without interpretations and people interpreting things.
08:19I admit I did have an experience with someone who gave me a word,
08:23and I have no idea how they knew what I was going through.
08:27So I'm not here to judge what happened to me.
08:30But that was one occasion in that environment.
08:35But, yeah, it was like we went from a church that was lights on, hymns.
08:42We barely clapped to a church that was, like, lights off during the worship time
08:48and two hours of worship time and songs that were very personal, not about the gospel, not about God.
08:55But we felt good, and that's what mattered.
08:58And even though we were, that's one of the things that I was really surprised because it was a church
09:05that really did Bible studies.
09:08It really went deep into the Bible.
09:10And yet, they started going into this.
09:15And I was really, I was caught up in it, but I've always had a very rational mind and very
09:23strong-minded.
09:24So I was always kind of like, there is something weird here.
09:27Every time they do an altar call, there's the same people there.
09:30What happened to them?
09:32Why is it always the same people at the front?
09:34And so I always had my doubts, but out of respect, firstly to my mom and then to the leadership,
09:42I try not to voice it out because, yeah.
09:46But I always had my doubts at that point.
09:48And then we had to move to a different church, and that's when everything was getting worse even.
09:55You know, I'm trying to picture the Pentecostal minister who comes into that type of environment.
10:01I've known a few and still know a few Pentecostal ministers, and they're not so much about the feel-good
10:07songs.
10:08They like the old hymns that are worshipped directly to God.
10:11It's not really about emotion or anything like this.
10:14I'm trying to picture him coming into a church that has this.
10:18How would he react?
10:19What was he like?
10:21What did he do whenever he first encountered this?
10:24The curious thing is his wife was very into manifesting things like speaking in tongues, but that was the main
10:32thing.
10:33He was opposed to it, but he didn't want to have problems with the strong leadership of the church because
10:40we were part of what's called the Evangelistic Alliance or Evangelical Alliance, sorry.
10:47And that Evangelical Alliance was the one, he was part of that too.
10:51But the church was in charge of voting for the pastor.
10:55So he is like, he let us know or he let know the leadership that he wasn't okay with that.
11:04But he was like, I don't want problems with you, so I'll let you do it.
11:09To some extent, he tried to put some guards, like bowling, I think.
11:16But still, the leadership at that point was very strong-minded too.
11:22So they sort of did it, but it wasn't extreme.
11:25I can only imagine.
11:27So after you started to feel this feel-good music and you watched the people coming up to the altar
11:33calls, and I remember very clearly what you're describing.
11:37I don't know if anybody else has ever seen a Pentecostal-style altar call, but everybody goes up front.
11:43There's crying.
11:43There's weeping.
11:44The ministers usually come down, lay hands.
11:47And looking back, now that you've said this, it usually is the same crowd of people.
11:52It's always the same people going up.
11:54And I'm not laughing because it's funny.
11:57I'm laughing because, for me, I knew those people, and I knew that as they were going up, some of
12:03them were very sincere.
12:05And those are not the ones I'm laughing at.
12:07But some of them, they were going up just to make a show.
12:11And if you've ever been in a Pentecostal movement where you have people who are there to make a show,
12:17it does get kind of funny.
12:19And there are actually songs written about this type of person.
12:22I knew this type of person.
12:25What was your feeling about the people who went up to the altar calls?
12:28Do you think they were sincere?
12:29Do you think they were just doing it for show?
12:31I agree.
12:32I think both.
12:34A lot of people I knew are very close.
12:38And I honestly think they were sincere in going there.
12:43They wanted some sort of freedom.
12:45I think it was the psychotherapy, in a sense.
12:49That's how I saw it.
12:50I was probably around 15.
12:53So I wasn't fully mature.
12:56I had some grasp of that.
13:00And I just thought, why is it always the same people?
13:03Is it like they have a lot of problems, emotional problems?
13:07I knew that.
13:09Especially the youngest ones.
13:10I think they were doing it for show, some of them.
13:14But usually women went to the altar call to be what we call ministered.
13:22It's basically, it's not about becoming a Christian.
13:25It's about feeling something, some sort of peace or deliverance.
13:31So I think there was a little bit of both, knowing the people I knew.
13:35But yeah, it was a mix.
13:40So you started to see the altar call as people were starting to get very emotional in church,
13:46which that would have been a significant change.
13:49What did you do next?
13:50I started to read my Bible.
13:53I think I was, funnily enough, I went to one of these spiritual retreats that was all crazy.
13:59But it did work for me.
14:02I wasn't coming crazy, but it did change something in me.
14:06I think I was born again there.
14:08I don't know.
14:09But I said, if I'm a Christian, I should read my Bible.
14:12And I started reading my Bible, like the whole Bible,
14:15and started finding out that this is not in the Bible.
14:19And I started asking questions.
14:25But at that point in my life, we have to move.
14:28So we have to change to another church, because we have to move to a different part of the country.
14:33So that church stayed like that.
14:36I think it's still going at the moment.
14:39But we moved to a different church.
14:40So we already have this mindset.
14:45That's what church is.
14:46And at that point, it's funny, because when Protestantism came to Costa Rica,
14:54it's a Catholic country, but Protestantism came to Costa Rica,
14:58there was a lot of opposition, a lot of violence sometimes.
15:02So the majority of the churches were like Presbyterian Baptist,
15:08very formal churches.
15:10And then suddenly, at that point, I'm thinking like 2010,
15:18the majority of the Christian evangelical churches were having this sort of style of service.
15:26That's what you were expecting.
15:28That's the idea.
15:29And it just spread it.
15:31Everybody was doing these encounters.
15:33Every single church had these dance ministries,
15:36which is like very Jewish type of dancing,
15:40which is something I haven't seen in other countries, really.
15:43It's very Latin American.
15:44I don't know why.
15:46But almost you would see every Latin American service,
15:51they have a dance ministry of especially girls
15:55who have these kind of dresses like Hebrew dancing style,
16:02and they try to justify all that they're doing with the Bible,
16:05but it's not in the Bible.
16:07But for some reason, it's very popular,
16:08and they mix that with the long worship time.
16:12And so that's what you expect from every church.
16:14So we moved to this other church,
16:16which have all this and more,
16:20because this church has an apostolic coverage.
16:25And me and my mom were like,
16:28oh, we don't like my mom and I.
16:29We didn't like that idea.
16:31Yeah, but the pastor was good.
16:34The sermons were good.
16:35And the rest looked the same to us.
16:38So while we're staying,
16:40we inquired about the apostolic coverage,
16:43and they said it was nothing.
16:45It was just a name.
16:46They didn't control the church.
16:48But we started noticing that every time
16:50that the so-called apostle came to visit,
16:53it was like Jesus was coming to visit the church.
16:57It was like this culture of honor
17:01that I've been listening to lately,
17:03especially in other cases in the years,
17:05that was what I was seeing.
17:07And it felt very weird and uncomfortable.
17:10But again, out of respect for my mom
17:13and respect of the leadership,
17:15I didn't say much,
17:16but I voiced out my doubts,
17:18and I tried questioning.
17:21But it wasn't that bad at the beginning.
17:25I was very busy finishing my uni,
17:27so I wasn't there all the time.
17:30But it was a bit,
17:32I started noticing when you,
17:34when we started coming more often
17:37and getting involved in the church,
17:39they started like ordering things,
17:43like controlling us in a very mild way.
17:46Like, oh, you have to come to both services on Sundays
17:51because you need to do this and that.
17:54Oh, they weren't like forcing us,
17:57but it was like expected of us.
18:00And then we started noticing
18:01there was a circle around the pastor
18:05that of these favorite people he had
18:08who were very, very loyal to him
18:11and his wife at that point.
18:13And there were all these little details.
18:17And it was bearable, I would say,
18:20to some extent,
18:21because the rest was quite biblical in a sense.
18:26It was, the sermons were biblical.
18:29The problem came when the pastor just disappeared
18:33one day, some five years after that.
18:39And there was a lot of secrecy.
18:43The family of the pastor just didn't tell us what happened.
18:46Everybody knew he was not around.
18:48He was not showing up for like two months
18:51preaching and teaching
18:52and he was nowhere to see.
18:54And the family was just,
18:56it's okay, he is fine.
18:58And they didn't say anything about what was going on
19:01until one day the apostle came
19:04and he appointed the pastor's wife
19:07as the new pastor
19:08just because.
19:12And I respect her
19:15and I appreciate her
19:16as another fellow Christian.
19:20But to be honest,
19:22I, well, I do understand now,
19:25my understanding is that
19:26maybe women are not the best to lead a church.
19:31And, but on the other hand,
19:32it was like,
19:33she doesn't have all the,
19:35she's not a good preacher,
19:37a good leader to be a pastor.
19:40But she had to be
19:42because she was the pastor's wife.
19:43So she had to be the next pastor.
19:45And then you started seeing
19:47all the family members
19:48getting these positions at the church
19:51and getting away with sin,
19:54getting away, in a sense,
19:55not all of them,
19:56but most of them is like,
19:58oh, you, you just stopped coming to church
20:00or you were like,
20:01we saw you doing these
20:02and it wasn't right.
20:03But nobody said anything
20:05because he was the pastor's
20:07brother-in-law
20:08or he was a pastor's wife
20:10or something like that.
20:12And then things just started,
20:15this new pastor started
20:17going to the US
20:19to these seminars
20:20or these retreats
20:22that I know now
20:24that are very NAR style.
20:26And she started bringing
20:27a lot of those things
20:29and the sappy music
20:30started coming during the sermons.
20:32And I just hated that.
20:34I just, it just doesn't,
20:35I want to hear the word being preached.
20:37But that was the thing.
20:39They stopped preaching.
20:40They were just appealing to emotions.
20:42They would just have this idea
20:44and they tried to use verses
20:47to kind of support the idea.
20:49And then they shouted
20:50for an hour and a half
20:52because it was a lot of shouting,
20:53which wasn't before.
20:55I didn't understand
20:56why do they need to shout?
20:58Why do they need
20:59the sappy music in the back?
21:01And now there were
21:03two, three hour sessions of worship
21:05and no preaching at all.
21:07And then I started asking questions.
21:10But the answer was,
21:12it's okay.
21:14We know what we're doing
21:15or submit.
21:16But they didn't mistreat
21:19or were never quite rude
21:21because they knew
21:23who they could be rude with,
21:25which people,
21:26and who, I would say,
21:28who they could bully
21:29because that's what it felt
21:31at some point.
21:32But then I started asking
21:34a lot of questions
21:35because of that.
21:36I would have asked questions too.
21:38So let's talk a little bit about,
21:40you mentioned the spiritual covering
21:42and talking about
21:44how controlling that was.
21:45I want to know more
21:47because that's something that,
21:49as I'm studying this happening
21:50in the United States,
21:51I'm a little surprised
21:52that other countries
21:53even put up with it.
21:54If somebody comes up
21:55and says,
21:56hey, I'm going to control you,
21:57most people say,
21:59no, you're not.
22:00How did that develop?
22:02What was that like
22:03when it entered your church?
22:04I think it was already there.
22:06It's just magnified
22:07after this pastor left
22:09because the new female pastor
22:12really, as I said,
22:14and I respected her
22:15as a fellow Christian,
22:16but she was pretty insecure,
22:20I think,
22:21and she needed these acolytes
22:23around her in a sense
22:24because that's what it looked like.
22:26The faithful acolytes
22:28would do absolutely anything for her.
22:31And she told them what to do,
22:34but it was so weird
22:36to see how willing they were.
22:39So I,
22:41for the rest of the people
22:44in the church
22:44who were not in that circle,
22:47it was very subtle,
22:49I would say sometimes.
22:51I remember I came to England
22:55to do a master's degree.
22:57I went back with a boyfriend,
22:58but it was a long-distance relationship then.
23:01And the only time of the week
23:03we had time to talk
23:05was on Sundays.
23:07So when I was serving
23:10in the PA desk,
23:12that day that I was serving,
23:14I had to be on both services.
23:18But I talked to my leader
23:21and I said,
23:22well, this is my situation.
23:23I'm still coming
23:24to one of the services to serve,
23:27but I don't think
23:28I can come to the second one
23:30because I want to have
23:31a chat with my boyfriend.
23:33And I actually realized
23:36I had that message
23:37that I sent to my husband
23:40at that point.
23:41It says,
23:42he told me that
23:42I had to choose
23:43between you and God.
23:44So he equate,
23:47he made me think
23:49that if I didn't choose
23:50the church,
23:52I was rejecting God.
23:55And I remember that message.
23:57It made me feel guilty.
23:58It made me feel bad.
24:00And I said,
24:02oh, I can't,
24:02how can I not choose God?
24:04I say I love God.
24:06I should go to both
24:09Sunday services.
24:10So it was these little things.
24:12It's like,
24:13oh, you shouldn't do that.
24:14It's like these expectations,
24:16guilt.
24:17It wasn't abusive
24:20in a sense,
24:21at least not with everybody.
24:22I think,
24:23I think there was abuse
24:25with some people
24:26closer to the leaders.
24:28Like they literally
24:30didn't allow them
24:31to go to the party
24:32of the grandchild
24:33because they have to be
24:34there for them.
24:35So for some people,
24:37there were abuse.
24:39But for the rest,
24:40I think there was more
24:41about very using guilt
24:44to convince us
24:46that this was the best
24:47thing to do.
24:48And if we actually
24:50loved God,
24:51this is what we're supposed
24:52to be,
24:52to be in the church.
24:53I mean,
24:54I don't know.
24:55I know in the US,
24:55this is not very common,
24:56but in Latin America,
24:57especially,
24:58you usually have like
24:59two or three services
25:00during the week
25:01on top of the service
25:03on Sunday.
25:05and it's like
25:06they're expecting you
25:07to be on all of them.
25:08And if you are not
25:10on them,
25:11they make you feel
25:12like you're not
25:12a good Christian.
25:13They don't even
25:14ask you
25:16if you're okay,
25:17if you have
25:18other responsibilities,
25:19if you're working.
25:21It's like,
25:22you should be there.
25:23And they make you feel
25:25like you're not
25:26a good Christian
25:26if you don't do it.
25:28And it's those
25:29kind of things
25:30that were not very,
25:33yeah,
25:33they felt very controlling.
25:35And I think
25:37in your podcast
25:38with the other,
25:39with Christian Arce,
25:40he mentioned like this,
25:43I can't make decisions
25:44unless the leader
25:45approves them.
25:46I think that happened
25:47in some senses.
25:48But what surprises me
25:51is some of those
25:55people were actually
25:57happy to surrender
25:58everything
25:59for this person.
26:01It was like
26:01an unhealthy love
26:03for the leader
26:04at the same time.
26:06And I just didn't like it.
26:08I mean,
26:08I did ask questions
26:10about it
26:10and they started noticing
26:12I was a bit of a rebel.
26:14But because I got,
26:16I was getting married,
26:18they just said,
26:19oh, good luck.
26:20So that's how I left
26:21because I got married,
26:23not because I had
26:23any disagreement.
26:25But I started noticing
26:26then that this
26:27was going
26:28in a bad direction,
26:32especially in finances.
26:34Have you ever wondered
26:36how the Pentecostal movement
26:37started
26:37or how the progression
26:39of modern Pentecostalism
26:41transitioned
26:41through the latter reign,
26:43charismatic,
26:44and other fringe movements
26:45into the new
26:46apostolic reformation?

27:34Okay, so we've talked
27:35about what happened
27:36in Costa Rica.
27:37The church is being,
27:39there's a virus
27:40that's spreading
27:41through the churches
27:42in Costa Rica,
27:42according to what you
27:43and Christian are telling me.
27:44This is something
27:45that I kind of knew,
27:46I actually have friends
27:48in Costa Rica as well,
27:49so I kind of knew
27:50this was happening.
27:51I don't think Costa Rica
27:52is the only place
27:53where this is happening.
27:54I think large volumes
27:56of people are experiencing
27:58this, right?
27:59And it's all coming
28:00from people
28:01who are in my history
28:02that as I'm looking
28:04through the history
28:05that is leading up
28:07to the charismatic movement,
28:09some of those names
28:10are spreading overseas.
28:11When William Branham
28:12spread overseas,
28:13along with him
28:14came every face
28:15that was in that
28:16type of movement.
28:17And then when he died,
28:18they're still coming.
28:19So Kenneth Hagin,
28:20for example,
28:21the Rhema,
28:22he's spreading
28:23William Branham's
28:24spoken word,
28:25but he's rebranded it
28:26as the Rhema
28:27and it's spreading
28:28throughout all kinds
28:29of churches everywhere.
28:31And what happens
28:32is it creates
28:33building blocks
28:34of theology
28:35and you can't
28:36really easily topple them.
28:38You look at the one,
28:39the doctrine
28:39that's the latest
28:40one on the top,
28:41well,
28:42to get to the root
28:43of the problem,
28:43you have to go deeper
28:44and then you find,
28:45well,
28:45that doctrine's not quite right.
28:46What's under it
28:47and you go deeper
28:48and deeper
28:48and in the end
28:50it's the leaning
28:52tower of Pisa
28:53only it's actually
28:54getting ready
28:54to topple and fall.
28:56I think that's
28:57what I experienced
28:59a lot of that.
29:00My story is a bit
29:03different
29:04because I wasn't
29:04really all in
29:06that,
29:07but I saw
29:09the process
29:10of changing
29:10of the church
29:12that I grew up in
29:13and then moving
29:14to this other church
29:15that had another
29:16process of
29:17even becoming
29:18more NAR,
29:20if I can say
29:20anything,
29:22if I can explain
29:23it that way.
29:25And just quickly,
29:26like,
29:27in terms of control
29:28and the finances
29:29they had,
29:30it was crazy
29:31and
29:34they wanted
29:35to move
29:35to the building
29:36in front
29:36of the church,
29:37buy it
29:40because they were
29:41renting at that point
29:42and they were
29:43just getting
29:44money,
29:45just collecting
29:46money from the people
29:46but they became
29:48very kind of
29:49forceful
29:49and asking people
29:50to get loans
29:51for them
29:52because they wanted
29:53this great
29:54beautiful building
29:56and I just said
29:57we can't just
29:58move the way it is,
29:59we don't need
30:00all this money
30:00and I was one
30:01of the two people
30:02in all the assembly
30:03who objected
30:06to that
30:06in front of everybody
30:07and they just
30:08looked at me
30:08like I was like
30:09almost the devil
30:11which by the way
30:12they just believed
30:13that there were
30:14witches around
30:15the church
30:15all the time
30:16as well
30:16but yeah
30:19it was a
30:20crazy process
30:21and I started
30:22hearing all these
30:24apostles
30:24and prophets
30:25and things
30:26and I was like
30:26what is this
30:27but I think
30:29my main
30:32confrontation
30:32or
30:33I get to know
30:34all this
30:35when I
30:36moved to England
30:37and then
30:39I meet someone
30:41and this person
30:43starts introducing
30:44me
30:44to all these
30:46things
30:46word of faith
30:48NAR
30:50all this
30:51declaring
30:52decree
30:52and
30:53I sort of
30:54heard about
30:55that before
30:56because obviously
30:57that was
30:58in Costa Rica
30:59at that point
30:59but all these
31:01names
31:01and all this
31:02spiritual warfare
31:03and all this
31:04courts of heaven
31:06things
31:07I'd never
31:08heard of it
31:09but this person
31:09was really
31:10into it
31:11and
31:14especially
31:15because
31:16he wanted
31:17a breakthrough
31:18and they
31:20were promising
31:20a breakthrough
31:21through
31:22doing all
31:23these things
31:24and
31:24then I go
31:25I start going
31:26to a charismatic
31:27church in England
31:28and they
31:30practice the gifts
31:32and they think
31:32oh you should
31:33be speaking in tongues
31:34and I tried
31:35but I didn't
31:36come out
31:36because my mom
31:37taught me
31:38if it's from God
31:40it's going to happen
31:41you don't need
31:41to force it
31:42so I just
31:42followed that
31:43advice
31:43and she is
31:45a very wise
31:46woman
31:47who really
31:48studied the Bible
31:49and a lot of
31:49that is
31:50because I learned
31:51from her
31:52but
31:54but yeah
31:54it was this idea
31:56that I needed
31:56to do this
31:57I
31:58I was very
31:59confused
32:00but I had
32:01this concept
32:02in my head
32:03already
32:03that was
32:04kind of
32:04like
32:04implanted
32:05in me
32:06when I
32:06was growing
32:06up
32:07like
32:07I
32:08think
32:08this
32:09is
32:09Christianity
32:09you start
32:10like a
32:11baby
32:12Christian
32:12just reading
32:13your Bible
32:13and singing
32:15hymns at church
32:16but eventually
32:17you start
32:18glowing in the
32:18dark
32:19and you start
32:20speaking in tongues
32:20and that's just
32:21what happens
32:22in Christianity
32:22so I was
32:24also like
32:25I already read
32:26my Bible
32:27a couple of
32:27times
32:28cover to
32:28cover
32:29why am I
32:30not doing
32:31those things
32:31I think
32:32I'm supposed
32:33to
32:33so I
32:34started
32:34getting
32:35very open
32:36to this
32:37and I
32:37allowed
32:38some people
32:39to kind
32:40of
32:40what they
32:40say
32:41minister
32:41to me
32:42and
32:43take me
32:44to the
32:44room
32:45in this
32:46building
32:46they have
32:47a heavenly
32:48portal
32:48and they
32:49believe
32:49that they
32:50just put
32:50some
32:51sappy
32:51music
32:51in there
32:52and they
32:53prayed in
32:53tongues
32:54for me
32:54and they
32:54put their
32:55hands
32:55on my
32:56belly
32:56I would
32:57be
32:58speaking
32:59in tongues
33:00and being
33:00freed
33:01from
33:01traumas
33:02that they
33:03come up
33:04with
33:04because
33:04nobody
33:06has a
33:06perfect
33:06childhood
33:07I didn't
33:08have a
33:08perfect
33:08child
33:09but I
33:09had a
33:09loving
33:09family
33:10I still
33:10have a
33:11loving
33:11family
33:11and they
33:13just made
33:13me believe
33:14that I
33:14had this
33:15kind of
33:15terrible
33:16childhood
33:16because of
33:17a couple
33:18of things
33:18that happened
33:19and I
33:20needed to
33:21be freed
33:22from that
33:22and I
33:23just
33:24I was
33:25very
33:25skeptical
33:25but I
33:27just
33:27thought
33:27you know
33:28what
33:28I think
33:29this is
33:30the next
33:30step
33:30I should
33:31be doing
33:32these things
33:33and this
33:33is the next
33:34level of
33:34Christianity
33:35that I'm
33:35supposed to
33:36be in
33:37so I
33:38was getting
33:39very open
33:39to it
33:41at that
33:42point in
33:42my life
33:43so yeah
33:44that's
33:45kind of
33:45like where
33:46I go
33:47from a
33:48very
33:49again
33:49very
33:50biblical
33:51non-charismatic
33:51to charismatic
33:53but still
33:54biblical
33:54to apostolic
33:55to now
33:56full-on
33:57NAR
33:58but I
33:59wasn't
33:59going to
34:00an
34:00NAR
34:00church
34:01it was
34:01just
34:01the
34:01influence
34:02from
34:02outside
34:03and it
34:04was
34:04it was
34:05all in
34:06with them
34:06but I
34:07couldn't
34:08there was
34:08something
34:09in me
34:09and I
34:10said
34:10that's
34:11not in
34:11the
34:11Bible
34:11that's
34:12not in
34:12the
34:12Bible
34:13and I
34:13kept
34:15debating
34:15with this
34:16person
34:16that's
34:17not what
34:17the verse
34:18means
34:19if you
34:19read it
34:19in context
34:20I have
34:20no idea
34:20now I'm
34:22studying
34:23theology
34:24at the
34:24moment
34:25so I'm
34:25doing
34:25a degree
34:26but at
34:27that point
34:27I had
34:27no idea
34:28and I
34:29still
34:29think
34:29that's
34:30not what
34:30the Bible
34:31says
34:31I just
34:32don't
34:32understand
34:33why am
34:33I supposed
34:34to do
34:34this
34:34I just
34:35don't
34:35feel it
34:36and I
34:37was always
34:37skeptical
34:38about it
34:38you said
34:39something
34:40that I
34:40actually
34:40want to
34:41highlight
34:41because
34:41I don't
34:42know that
34:42anybody
34:43has really
34:43said this
34:44before
34:44and it
34:44is actually
34:45true
34:46when you're
34:47in this
34:47type of
34:47movement
34:48they want
34:49to highlight
34:50the issues
34:50that you
34:51had
34:51in the
34:51past
34:53worse
34:53they want
34:54to continually
34:55bring them
34:55up
34:55so the
34:56things
34:56that you
34:56really
34:57really
34:57suffered
34:57with
34:58that you've
34:59moved on
35:00they will
35:00often try
35:01to find
35:02them
35:02they'll ask
35:03you
35:03what happened
35:04in your
35:04past
35:04and they
35:04want to
35:05find this
35:05I have
35:06been in
35:06sermons
35:07where they're
35:07actually
35:08calling it
35:08out
35:08the minister
35:09saying
35:09remember
35:10brother
35:10so-and-so
35:11back when
35:11you had
35:12this thing
35:13that you
35:13suffered
35:13with
35:14in the
35:14past
35:14and what
35:15it's
35:15doing
35:15is bringing
35:16all of
35:16these horrific
35:17memories
35:18to the
35:18surface
35:18and it's
35:19making
35:19people
35:19cry
35:20and once
35:21they cry
35:21the crying
35:22starts
35:22spreading
35:22everybody
35:23thinks
35:23the move
35:23of God
35:24is there
35:24but to
35:25the person
35:26whose past
35:26has just
35:27been resurrected
35:27they're having
35:28to relive
35:29all of those
35:30memories
35:30and it
35:31is painful
35:32I've watched
35:33people just
35:34really struggle
35:34with this
35:35when you leave
35:36and you go
35:37to a new
35:37church
35:37it's one
35:38of the most
35:38freeing
35:38things
35:39that you
35:39don't have
35:39to keep
35:40looking
35:40backwards
35:41instead
35:41you start
35:42looking
35:42forwards
35:43at the future
35:44that can be
35:45brighter
35:45not the past
35:46that was
35:46less bright
35:47indeed
35:48it's this
35:49idea of
35:51performance
35:53like
35:53you're
35:54I was
35:55I mentioned
35:56before like
35:56I was a bad
35:57Christian if I
35:58wasn't going to
35:59church three
35:59times a week
36:00and I didn't
36:02have a good
36:02excuse to not
36:03come like I
36:04was working
36:04something like
36:05that
36:05now it was
36:06like I wasn't
36:07a good Christian
36:08if I wasn't
36:09feeling
36:10stuff
36:11crying at
36:12church
36:12or just
36:13feeling
36:14very emotional
36:15I'm not
36:16particularly
36:17emotional
36:18in that
36:18sense
36:18I'm very
36:20strong-minded
36:21and rational
36:22I would
36:23think
36:23and
36:24I just
36:25I just
36:26if I don't
36:27feel it
36:27I don't
36:27feel it
36:28I don't
36:28force it
36:29but I
36:30found myself
36:31and that's
36:32what frustrates
36:32me about
36:33this part of
36:34my story
36:35at times
36:36I found
36:37myself
36:37pretending
36:38because I
36:39was so
36:40tired
36:40of being
36:42in that
36:42room for
36:43two hours
36:43and these
36:45people
36:46forcing me
36:47to do
36:47or feel
36:48something
36:48I just
36:49pretended
36:50and I
36:51wanted
36:51to believe
36:52that it
36:54was true
36:54I really
36:55wanted to
36:56because it
36:57was tiring
36:58to be there
36:59and they
36:59just
37:00yeah
37:01they're just
37:02expecting you
37:03to this
37:03expectancy
37:04this performance
37:05it goes
37:06from one way
37:07to the other
37:08it was very
37:09frustrating
37:09at that time
37:10and that's
37:11one of the
37:12reasons why
37:12they call it
37:13a high demand
37:13group
37:14it is so
37:14demanding of
37:15you to
37:16keep this
37:16mentality up
37:17in fact
37:18everything that
37:19you've mentioned
37:19so far
37:20even the
37:20emotions
37:21in the
37:21songs
37:21not many
37:23people think
37:23about this
37:24but when
37:24you are
37:26when you
37:26have heightened
37:27emotions
37:27and those
37:28emotions are
37:28being heightened
37:29by something
37:30that is
37:30outside of
37:31you
37:31it's really
37:32tiring
37:33because you're
37:33having to
37:34connect with
37:34that thing
37:34outside
37:35and your
37:35brain is
37:36struggling
37:37to think
37:37well why
37:38am I
37:38like this
37:39what is
37:40happening
37:40to my
37:40head
37:41and people
37:42get into
37:42that
37:42and what
37:43happens
37:43is over
37:44time
37:44it's weird
37:44you get
37:45actually
37:45addicted to
37:46it
37:46you get
37:46addicted to
37:47the hype
37:48because all
37:48of those
37:49endorphins
37:50are going
37:50through your
37:51body and you
37:52start to feel
37:53these senses
37:53going through
37:54you
37:54and people
37:55get addicted
37:55to it
37:56and then when
37:56they leave
37:57the emotion's
37:58gone and they
37:58don't know
37:59what to do
37:59with the
37:59absence of
38:00the emotion
38:02I'll never
38:03forget
38:03whenever I
38:04left
38:04I went
38:05to a
38:06normal
38:06casual
38:07sermon
38:07where they
38:08just got
38:08up and they
38:09said
38:09here's the
38:10bible
38:10we're going
38:10to read
38:11from the
38:11bible
38:11we're going
38:12to talk
38:12about this
38:13and I thought
38:14it was the
38:14most boring
38:14service ever
38:15where is the
38:16emotion in
38:17this
38:17and you know
38:19you leave
38:19and you think
38:20it's a cold
38:20formal church
38:21but in reality
38:23that's a lot
38:24healthier than
38:24what they were
38:25doing to our
38:25heads in the
38:25other church
38:26and that's
38:27kind of like
38:28what happened
38:28to me
38:29I guess
38:31I said
38:32I was never
38:33all in
38:34because I always
38:36had my doubts
38:36I always was
38:38skeptical
38:38I was like
38:39yeah
38:39I did my
38:41toes in the
38:42water and I
38:42didn't like the
38:43temperature so I
38:44just
38:44stepped back
38:45and
38:48eventually
38:49and this is
38:50again
38:50providential
38:51I
38:52after moving
38:53to England
38:54I go to
38:55visit my
38:55family and
38:56Costa Rica
38:56and my
38:57mom was
38:58listening to
38:58sermon
38:58of a
39:00random guy
39:01from Spain
39:02and
39:03at that
39:04till that
39:05point
39:06I've been
39:06majority of
39:07the sermons
39:08or the
39:08preachings I
39:09was listening
39:09on my own
39:10where from
39:11this trend
39:12of this
39:13area of
39:14NAR
39:14from
39:15recommended
39:17by those
39:17people who
39:18were introducing
39:19me to it
39:20and all
39:20that and
39:23and
39:23suddenly I'm
39:25listening to
39:25this preacher
39:26from my
39:27mom was
39:27listening to
39:28he was
39:29just
39:30preaching
39:30the bible
39:30he was
39:31just
39:31teaching
39:31the bible
39:32and he
39:32was so
39:33refreshing
39:33like he's
39:34not shouting
39:35at me
39:35he's not
39:36condemning me
39:37he's not
39:38he's just
39:39preaching
39:40if for some
39:41reason that
39:42sermon
39:42convinced me
39:43of something
39:43that's
39:44just because
39:45that's what
39:46he was
39:46talking about
39:47but not
39:47because he
39:48was trying
39:49to elicit
39:50any specific
39:50emotion
39:51in me
39:51and I
39:53come back
39:53to the UK
39:54I was
39:55really touched
39:56by that
39:57I was just
39:57who's this
39:58guy
39:58I started
39:59listening to
39:59this guy
40:00and the
40:01way the
40:02algorithm
40:02works
40:03so he
40:03recommended
40:04me other
40:05pictures
40:05similar to
40:06this
40:06and one
40:08thing led
40:08to another
40:09and then I
40:10ended up
40:11finding
40:12I think it
40:13was Justin
40:13Peters
40:13and then
40:15his seminar
40:16about the
40:17word of
40:18faith
40:18and I
40:19was like
40:19that was
40:20that's it
40:21that's why
40:23I felt
40:23so
40:25ostracized
40:26that's because
40:27it's not
40:27biblical
40:28he finally
40:29I could put
40:29a name
40:30to all
40:31the doubts
40:31and all
40:32the
40:34skepticism
40:35I was
40:36feeling at
40:36that point
40:36I guess
40:38to some
40:38people
40:39leaving
40:40or finding
40:40that out
40:41is just
40:42it destroys
40:43them
40:44a little
40:44bit
40:46but to
40:46me it
40:47was a
40:48massive
40:48relief
40:49because
40:50I am a
40:51fixer
40:52I think
40:52I'm the
40:53kind of
40:53person
40:53who if
40:54something
40:54is broken
40:55I need
40:55to fix
40:55it
40:56I don't
40:58I don't
40:59like to
41:00dwell on
41:00it
41:00and if
41:02I have
41:02something
41:04painful
41:04I need
41:05to know
41:06what is
41:06so I
41:07can fix
41:08it
41:08so to
41:09me
41:09being able
41:10to put
41:11a name
41:11on it
41:12and to
41:12understand
41:13why I
41:14was feeling
41:15so uncomfortable
41:16about this
41:16all the
41:17time
41:17was such
41:18a big
41:19relief
41:20I went
41:21into
41:21a state
41:23of
41:24all the
41:24moves
41:25I don't
41:25know
41:25I was
41:26very
41:26crazy
41:26about it
41:27like I
41:27had to
41:28shout it
41:28out
41:28in not
41:29the very
41:29nice
41:30way
41:30to
41:31people
41:31I knew
41:32that were
41:33into it
41:33I learned
41:35from my
41:35mistake
41:35but
41:36it
41:37it was
41:37such
41:38a
41:39relief
41:39again
41:40because
41:41I
41:41could
41:43now I
41:44could do
41:44something
41:45about it
41:45and what
41:47I started
41:47doing
41:47I went
41:48to study
41:49in theology
41:49I found
41:52your channel
41:52because I
41:53was just
41:53researching
41:54about all
41:54these things
41:55and just
41:57wanted to
41:58know what
41:58this was
41:59because I
42:00have people
42:00I love
42:01in this
42:02still
42:03not just
42:04here but
42:05the people
42:05from my
42:06previous
42:06church in
42:07Costa Rica
42:07and I
42:08just
42:08I want
42:09them to
42:10to be
42:11able to
42:11see
42:11how
42:14controlling
42:14the high
42:15demand
42:16that that's
42:17not
42:17the
42:18Christianity
42:19from the
42:19Bible
42:20Christianity
42:21from the
42:21Bible
42:21is a
42:22lifestyle
42:22and I
42:23I now
42:24go because
42:25I ended
42:26up I
42:26was going
42:27to charismatic
42:27church
42:28and
42:30I was
42:31finding all
42:32this
42:32out
42:33and I
42:33realized I
42:34wasn't
42:34feeling
42:35comfortable
42:35in that
42:36church
42:36anymore
42:36I do
42:37I still
42:38have a lot
42:39of friends
42:39from that
42:40church
42:40because we're
42:41not gangs
42:41so we can
42:42still be
42:43friends and
42:44I actually
42:45work in
42:45that church
42:46but it
42:48wasn't
42:49comfortable
42:49anymore
42:50I think
42:51in a sense
42:51it was that
42:52traumatizing
42:53effect of
42:53I just
42:55don't want
42:55to hear
42:55anyone
42:56speaking in
42:56tongues
42:56anymore
42:57I'd rather
42:57not to
42:58just
42:58I mean
42:59I don't
43:00think
43:00it's wrong
43:01if you
43:02do it
43:02the right
43:02way
43:03but I
43:03just
43:03prefer not
43:04to be
43:04around that
43:07and the
43:08good thing
43:08unlike Costa
43:09Rica
43:10and that's
43:10one of the
43:11things that I
43:12found out
43:12it's very
43:13difficult to
43:14find like a
43:15non-charismatic
43:16or charismatic
43:17leaning church
43:18they all have
43:19this as I
43:20said dance
43:21ministries
43:21and altar
43:23calls and all
43:24these things
43:25they all have
43:26that one way
43:26or the other
43:27it's very
43:28difficult to
43:28find a
43:30a really
43:30good church
43:31or
43:33a non-charismatic
43:34church in all
43:35the sense
43:37England is the
43:38opposite and I
43:39think it has to
43:40do with the
43:40personality of the
43:41British people
43:42they're not
43:42extremely expressive
43:43so it's more
43:45likely to find a
43:46church that is
43:47very formal
43:49very as you
43:49said boring
43:50but my
43:52goodness the
43:52relief of
43:53going to
43:54church and
43:55not having
43:56anyone shouting
43:58at you or
43:58screaming or
43:59just just I
44:02mean one of
44:03the things that
44:03I find very
44:04shocking when I
44:05moved to this
44:06church is the
44:08piano it's on
44:09the side and
44:10the people who
44:11are singing are
44:11on the side
44:12they're not on
44:12the stage so
44:14to me that was
44:15a first in my
44:16life because the
44:16music was central
44:18it became central
44:19in in in my
44:21experience a
44:22church experience
44:23but to have
44:24the the music
44:25on the side
44:26and then you
44:27don't sing five
44:28songs all one
44:29after the other
44:29because they don't
44:30want you to just
44:31get emotional
44:32they want you to
44:33sing because it
44:34means something
44:35and you understand
44:37the meaning of
44:38the song and to
44:39me that was such
44:39a great time
44:42and I'm
44:44enjoying it
44:44I do miss a
44:46little bit the
44:47emotions and
44:48the nice music
44:50and all that
44:50sometimes but I
44:53wouldn't change
44:54what I have
44:55now and the
44:55peace I
44:56have peace I
44:57think that's the
44:57word I have
44:58peace I don't
44:59have all these
45:00demands and all
45:01these expectations
45:03you know whenever
45:04you talked about
45:05leaving and being
45:06frustrated and not
45:08being able to
45:08express the
45:09emotions that's
45:10so common when
45:11people leave these
45:12high demand groups
45:12because you're so
45:13connected to the
45:14emotions that when
45:16you leave you
45:17were bottle you
45:18realize you're
45:18bottling up other
45:19emotions you're
45:20showing the emotions
45:21they wanted you to
45:22feel but all of
45:23the others you
45:24were suppressing
45:24and it's like
45:25this like this
45:26coiled spring
45:27the moment you
45:28leave that spring
45:29is going to
45:29bounce and if
45:31somebody's in the
45:32way good lord
45:33it's a mess I
45:35went through the
45:35same thing and I
45:36wish you know I
45:37wish I could do it
45:38over it differently
45:39but to be honest I
45:41don't know how you
45:41can do it differently
45:42because you were
45:43suppressing all of
45:44that if you could
45:45go back and give
45:47advice to people who
45:48are still trapped in
45:50that type of movement
45:51where they're toying
45:52with the people's
45:53emotions what
45:54advice would you
45:54give them
45:55get out but it's
45:56not the best
45:56advice I said try
45:59reading the bible
46:00just just simple
46:02without music in the
46:04background without
46:05emotions in the
46:06background try just
46:07to keep it simple
46:09read your bible
46:11find people around
46:13you who will help
46:14you studying the
46:15bible and people
46:16who are not from
46:17that environment
46:18and I guess to
46:20me it's to not
46:21see that people
46:22as the enemy
46:23because that's
46:25something that I
46:26found myself
46:28I was just
46:29starting to feel
46:30that way
46:30that people who
46:32weren't in this
46:34emotional state
46:35or this
46:36mystical
46:37spiritual
46:40movement
46:41they weren't
46:43they're kind of
46:44my enemies
46:44they're not
46:45your enemies
46:46and some
46:48people worry
46:48some people
46:49see that
46:52you're becoming
46:53controlled by
46:55this environment
46:56and they want
46:57to help
46:57and they're not
46:59your enemy
46:59be opened
47:01to other
47:02points of view
47:03because
47:05I think you
47:06become so
47:07focused into
47:08getting that
47:09I just
47:10want that
47:11and
47:13also
47:14I guess
47:15a quick
47:16one
47:16because
47:17that's
47:17what I
47:18would say
47:18to someone
47:19I really
47:20know at
47:20the moment
47:21and I
47:21really
47:21love
47:22is
47:25be honest
47:27is all
47:28these things
47:29that they
47:30promised you
47:31happening
47:31all these
47:32things they
47:33told you
47:33that if
47:35only you
47:35go to
47:36this conference
47:37if only you
47:37see this
47:38preacher
47:38if only you
47:39do all
47:40these
47:41rituals
47:42you will
47:43be free
47:44you will
47:45find your
47:45breakthrough
47:46and it
47:46doesn't
47:47happen
47:47so it's
47:47like reflect
47:48upon that
47:49and don't
47:50see others
47:50as your
47:51enemies
47:51because
47:52sometimes
47:52they really
47:53love you
47:54and they
47:54want the
47:54best
47:55that's
47:55very good
47:56advice
