25:33This one comes from Sarah Beveridge from Argyle and Bute on the west coast of Scotland.
25:37And she wrote that she recently came across the phrase to a T in a novel by Anthony Trollope.
25:43And she was surprised to see it in use so early in the 19th century.
25:46And she says, it led me to wonder how old a saying it really is and how it originated.
25:50And it is quite a modern-sounding expression, but it actually spans several centuries.
25:57The phrase itself means exactly to a perfect degree.
25:59And it's first recorded in 1693.
26:02But its roots seem to lie on an even older expression that involves a different letter of the alphabet altogether.
26:08For the ancient Greeks and Romans, if we look back to them, the letter I, called iota,
26:14since it was the smallest letter of their alphabet, was used in a figurative way to mean the least part
26:20of anything.
26:21And that's why today we talk about an iota to mean the tiniest amount.
26:25And incidentally, the anglicised version of iota, when we took it into English, was jot,
26:30which is why we say not a jot to mean not the least.
26:34And this is sounding quite complicated, but there was another phrase, to care not a jot or tittle,
26:40which again meant not the tiniest, tiniest part.
26:43And a tittle was the dot above the letter I, which is the smallest thing of all.
26:49And so in the same vein, to a tittle came to mean to the finest point of anything.
26:53And it's very probable that to a T is simply a shortening of to a tittle.
