00:31Good afternoon and welcome to Countdown on a very important day north of the border, as people right across Scotland
00:38of course are voting to determine their political future. It's the Scottish independence referendum and voters are being asked, should
00:46Scotland be an independent country, yes or no.
00:50And of course the union between England and Scotland goes way back, three centuries, I think 1707, and the future
00:58now may well change when the votes are cast.
01:01Very important day for people in Scotland and indeed for people in this country and Northern Ireland and Wales too,
01:08because Scotland, a wonderful country, I love it.
01:12I love to drive through the Trossacks for instance, in the highlands of Scotland are so special.
01:17We think about crowded England, go to Scotland, the vast spaces, the beautiful countryside, the locks, the cities, Edinburgh, what
01:23a great city that is.
01:25Are you familiar with Scotland, do you travel up there ever?
01:27I've only been there once actually, I've been to Glasgow, but I've got lots of Scottish friends and I've got
01:31some family that live up there that moved up from England and they absolutely love it.
01:35It's a different lifestyle, different weather. I think that the area that the school covers is like two hours wide.
01:43Yes.
01:43It's absolutely huge, yeah, but they've got a great lifestyle with all the cycling and mountains and walking and, yeah.
01:50Anyway, good luck Scotland, whichever way you turn. Now then, who have you got with us? Paul Worsley's back, going
01:56for a hat trick today, Paul, having already got two good wins under your belt.
01:59And you met your wife apparently, I'm not sure that I should be asking this, in an unusual place.
02:05That's right, yes.
02:06Can you talk about it?
02:07We actually met in a blind home.
02:09Oh really?
02:10Yes.
02:10How was that?
02:11Well, we both see perfectly well, but we were actually raising money for the home at the time, so we
02:17just happened to meet.
02:18Excellent stuff. And why are you particularly supporting that home or the...
02:23Not now, but at the time, yeah. I have been involved with various charities over the years, but at the
02:28time it was a particular home.
02:30Anyway, you saw something in each other, that's for sure, and there you are.
02:34And you've got your son Jack in the audience too.
02:36He's back again yesterday.
02:37Welcome back, Jack. You're joined today by David Morgans, and David's from Pattingham in Staffordshire, and your favourite place is
02:44Venice.
02:45Yes, it's wonderful, been there a couple of times, just like stepping back in time. No cars, no vehicles, old
02:53decaying vehicles, absolutely wonderful.
02:56They call it the Queen of Cities, I think. Glorious, glorious place. Wonderful stuff.
03:00Susie, welcome back.
03:02Thanks, Nick.
03:02And for the last time, until she reappears in our studio, the wonderful Jenny Eclare.
03:08Thank you. You'll be begging for me to come back.
03:11We're always begging. We're pestering your agent, and you turn us down time and again.
03:16Well, we've got you this time, and it won't be long before we get you back again either, young lady.
03:21Now then, Paul Worsley, take us away on the letters game, would you?

08:18This can be said about the second space on a Monopoly board.
08:39Welcome back, welcome back.
08:41I left you with a clue.
08:41This can be said about the second space on a Monopoly board,
08:45and the answer is cheapest, cheapest,
08:48which I think is the old Kent Road, the old Kent Road.
08:52It still is.

12:02Societal.

12:04It's an absolutely brilliant spot.
12:06You can talk about societal pressures, et cetera.
12:08Absolutely fantastic eight.
12:09Very good.
12:10Very good.
12:13And what else has the corner got to offer?
12:17Jenny.
12:17Well, I know it's flower-based, and I'm not quite sure how to spell it,
12:20but I'm going for calyxes.
12:23Calyxes, Susie?
12:24Yeah, they're usually spelled with a Y, but you can spell it with an I as well.
12:28The sepals of a flower, which form a protective layer around a flower in bud.
12:33Very nice.
12:33That's a triumph.
12:34Yeah.
12:35A triumph.
12:40Excellent.
12:4126 plays 16, and David, how about a numbers game?
12:47Two large, please.
12:48Thank you, David.
12:49Two from the top this time.
12:50And four little ones.
12:51And these ones are one, nine, eight, six, and the large two, 25 and 100.
13:01And the target, 854.
13:04Eight, five, four.
13:05One, five, five, five.
13:09And the target, 854.
13:33Don't catch up.
13:34And the target, 964.
13:36Yes, David?
13:378, 5, 4.
13:38Paul?
13:38I'm afraid I've gone wrong, isn't it?
13:40Gone wrong?
13:40I've gone wrong.
13:41All right, David, now's your chance.
13:43Um, 8 times 100.
13:458 times 100 for 800.
13:48And 9 times 6.
13:509 times 6 for the 54.
13:52Lovely.
13:54Yes.
13:56Paul?
13:57I'm having honest, but it's wrong the way I've gone, so.
14:00Paul, you surprised me.
14:01I think, uh, I think Sun might be a little bit cross with you.
14:07Never mind.
14:0726 All makes it more exciting.
14:10And now then, Jenny Eclair, our time has come.
14:16Anacdonc time.
14:17Please.
14:17All right, what have you got for us today?
14:19Well, now, earlier this year, I don't know whether any of your audience will have seen this programme,
14:24but I did a show called Splash.
14:26And this is a television show where they encourage minor celebrities to kill themselves.
14:31By diving headfirst off a diving board into water.
14:36And, um, I went off a five-metre board, which isn't extreme,
14:40but for someone who'd never dived before, it was quite a lot.
14:43And because of my weight and everything, I actually went in with the speed and velocity of a small car
14:47off a cliff.
14:48And that's how the dive was described.
14:52But more than that, I realised that at my age, by the time you get to my age, there are
14:56seven stages of swimwear.
14:59One, the bikini.
15:01Two, the tankini.
15:04Three, the one-piece.
15:06Four, the one-piece with a little skirt to hide the cellulite.
15:11Five, the one-piece with a sarong.
15:14And number six is going down to the beach and burying yourself up to the neck in sand.
15:19There is the elusive stage seven, of course, is when you get to the age where you couldn't care less.
15:26And that's where I am now.
15:27You don't care anymore.
15:29I couldn't care less.
15:30But tell me this.
15:33You just sort of shrug off these five metres.
15:36Yeah.
15:37That's actually quite a long way up.
15:39It's a scary way up.
15:41Yes, it is.
15:42Had you ever dived before?
15:43No.
15:44The last thing I'd want is an opportunity to dive off a five-metre board.
15:48Well, if they hear that, they will so beg you to do the programme.
15:51If it comes back for a third series, you will be right at the top of their list.
15:55I prefer 14 months in root canal treatment.
15:58Well, that's another reality TV show which I'm now going to pitch.
16:02It is.
16:03All right.
16:04Thank you very much indeed.
16:06Thank you very much, Jenny.
16:07Now then, Paul, 26 apiece, and let's have a letters game.

16:44And finish with a vowel, please.
16:47And finish with U.
16:51Kantan.
16:52I.
16:52I.
17:21I.
17:21I.
17:22Yes, Paul?
17:23A seven.
17:24Seven, David?
17:26Dodgy eight.
17:27Paul?
17:28In shores.
17:30And David?
17:31In curses.
17:33In curses, okay.
17:36Yeah, we do talk about an incursion, but in curse itself is not there as a verb, I'm afraid.
17:41Sorry.
17:41Bad luck.
17:42Bad luck.
17:43What have we got there?
17:44Jenny, the high diver?
17:46Cuisine.
17:47Yeah.
17:47Cuisine.
17:48Yeah, I think, I'm just wondering if you can put an S on it.
17:52Oh, cuisines from round the world.
17:55I think you probably can, actually.
17:58Food cooked in a certain way is a subsense, if you forgive the technical terms.
18:02I think you probably can have an eight with cuisine.
18:05Very good.
18:05And that's it?
18:06That's it, yes.
18:07Perfectly good.
18:07Good enough.
18:0833 plays, David's 26.
18:10And David, you're back on now for a letters game.

18:37Another consonant.
18:40T.
18:41And a final consonant, please.
18:43And a final Q.
18:45And here's the countdown clock.
18:48And here's the countdown clock.
19:18Yes, David?
19:19A six.
19:20A six.
19:21Paul?
19:21Six also.
19:22David?
19:23Bested.
19:24Bested.
19:25Both of you.
19:25I've got to fix that the same best.
19:26Nobody's bested.
19:27Same.
19:28Were you bested?
19:29I got bested, yes.
19:31And Susie?
19:31Likewise.
19:33Four halves.
19:33Oh, I'm dashed.
19:34Everybody's bested.
19:3539 plays.
19:36David's 32.
19:37Close run thing here.
19:39Numbers game for Paul.
19:41Can I do the inverted T, please, Rachel?
19:43You can, indeed.
19:44Thank you, Paul.
19:44Inverted T, one from the top.
19:46And five little ones coming up again.
19:48And this time, your little ones are two, ten, three, five, and one.
19:56And the large one, 100.
19:58And your target, 766.

20:35Seven, six, six.
20:36And David?
20:37Nope.
20:39Too far away?
20:40Yeah.
20:40All right.

20:42Five plus two is seven.
20:43Five plus two is seven.
20:45100 plus 10 is 110.
20:47Yep.
20:48You multiply the two together.
20:50770.
20:51Three out of one is four.
20:52It is.
20:53And subtract that.
20:54And you haven't used any of those.
20:55Well done.

20:59Well done, Paul.

21:0349 to where David's 32.
21:05But now, let's have a tea time teaser, which is doorbell.
21:09And the clue, no need for a doorbell at this establishment.
21:12It's got lots of knockers.
21:15No need for a doorbell at this establishment.
21:17It's got lots of knockers.
21:38And the answer, they made me say it.
21:45And we've got a vicar in the audience, so it's nothing to do with me.
21:48The answer is bordello.
21:51Bordello.
21:52From the Italian?
21:53Er, yes, from the Italian, but they took it from the French.
21:57Ah, typical French.
21:58There we go.
21:59Bordello.
22:0049 to where David's 32.
22:03Let's go to David.

23:18The maddest.
23:21Maddest person in town, yes.
23:23Absolutely fine.
23:24What offering from the corner?
23:26Well, there's atheism for seven, but David, you might kick yourself,
23:29because you could have added a D to misdate and have misdated for eight.
23:32It would have given you one more.
23:33Misdated.
23:34Well done, thank you.
23:3556 plays, David's 39.
23:37Paul, back on.

25:13Not a winning word, just a nice word.
25:15And Susie?
25:16I had endorser as well, Nick.
25:18Endorse.
25:18Very good.
25:19And thank you very much for rodeos.
25:2064 plays, 39.
25:22But now we're back in the corner again, where better to be, when it's Susie's origins of
25:28words time.
25:30Well, Nick, I'm often asked, who decides collective nouns?
25:35Because a lot of us like to make them up.
25:37You know, when does it become official?
25:38And the answer is with all English words, is when something is used often enough and is
25:42obviously quite plausible, then it stands a chance of becoming, you know, part of the
25:48English language in an official way, in the dictionary.
25:50But I've got some, some new, some old ones for you, which you may not have heard before.
25:56Buffalo, any idea for buffalo, what you might call?
25:59A hide of buffalo.
26:01It's an obstinacy of buffalo.
26:03Oh, you like that.
26:04A glaring of cats.
26:05Rachel, I like that one.
26:07A peep of chickens.
26:08Yes.
26:09Indeed, there are alternatives to these, so I'm not saying these are absolutely definitive.
26:12A bask of crocodiles, which I really like, a smack of jellyfish, a leap of leopards,
26:19a mute of peacocks, a knot of toads, a zeal of zebras, a blush of boys, a bevy of ladies,
26:27and a pity of prisoners.
26:29Very good, isn't it?
26:30Nice ones, aren't they?
26:31Lovely.
26:35Very good.
26:36But a mute of peacocks?
26:38Because they're noisy.
26:40They are.
26:40Eee!
26:41Eee!
26:41They absolutely are.
26:43That's a fantastic impression of a peacock.
26:45I defy anybody around this table to do a better peacock impression than that.
26:50Let me just close my eyes and do it again.
26:52Eee!
26:53Eee!
26:55Very good.
