00:31Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio on the very day that way back in 1969, one of the
00:37most famous and fabulous musical festivals came to an end. It came to an end in Woodstock, upstate New York.
00:45It was billed as an Aquarian exposition. Of course, it was known as the Age of Aquarius in those days.
00:51Three days of peace and music.
00:54Fantastic. 500,000 attended and apparently up to a million people were on their way but got turned back because
01:01there wasn't any room for them. It was fantastic.
01:04Sheffield's Joe Cocker. Remember Joe Cocker in your lifetime? Maybe not. Very, very, very hoarse sort of voice. He belted
01:13out that Beatles favourite with a little help from my friends.
01:15But the big deal was at the very end when Jimi Hendrix stood there with his guitar and banged out
01:23Star Spangled Banner as it had never been played before. I'd love to have been there.
01:28Could you imagine the queue for the toilets?
01:30Ever practical, Rachel.
01:31Miles and miles and miles, I bet.
01:33Yeah. I've only been to one music festival, which was Womad, which is something about world of music and dance
01:39or something.
01:40Oh, OK.
01:40But you go. You're the right age.
01:42I've been to a few.
01:43Where have you been recently?
01:45I've never done the camping or glamping or anything like that but I went to British Summertime in Hyde Park
01:50in July and I saw Backstreet Boys and McBusted.
01:54And it was good?
01:55They were really good actually, yeah.
01:57A night time job?
01:58Yeah, it was in the middle of all the gorgeous summer, all the sunshine, it was like monsoon season.
02:05It was umbrellas up and down, up and down but it was a really good show.
02:08Great stuff.
02:09Really good fun.
02:09Now then, Rachel, who have you got?
02:11We have got Mark Davis with us from Widness.
02:13We all know about Widness but what we are really rejoicing is six extraordinary wins including the massive score of
02:22137 points on Friday which you may be interested to know.
02:26Mark is just nine short of our all-time record so, you know, you've got every reason to be proud
02:32and so have your two nippers.
02:34It was a fabulous performance.
02:35Now then, you're joined by Stella Mobont, a retired school teacher from York, one-time army officer and now is
02:43a vocalist, a singer I guess, in a chamber choir.
02:46Where do you, where do you sing?
02:48In Harrogate, it's a 40-strong choir and we've seen concerts and weddings and things in various churches in Harrogate.
02:55That's wonderful because the whole idea of choirs now has sprung up.
02:58It's extraordinary, isn't it?
02:59Every big city firm now has got its own choir.
03:03Yeah.
03:03It's wonderful really.
03:05Welcome.
03:06Welcome.
03:06And you take care of Mark Davis over there.
03:09Let's have a big round of applause for Stella and Mark Davis.
03:17And for her second appearance, of course, we have the wonderful, but brilliant, Angelica Bell, joined in Dictionary Corner as
03:25ever by the wonderful Susie Dent.
03:26Welcome to you both.
03:28Welcome to you both.
03:28Now let's get down to business.

12:13seven mark courage courage and outrage outrage excellent both of them two good ones yeah what
12:22else have we got Angelica anything interesting we got outrage outage yes um there's exact or
12:29somebody who demands something is an exact or that's number seven right an exact or sounds ugly to me just
12:37sound a bit ugly I think what he does is probably enforcer yes um so if you exact promises from
12:43somebody um you are an exact or okay thank you very much Susie 37 plays 17 now the numbers again
12:49here we go Rachel Stella's numbers game six more months please right six more gambling already thank
12:56you Stella I think yes very wise against this compressor right six little ones are two four one three six
13:06and
13:08nine could be tricky the target three hundred and two three oh two
13:43Stella three hundred and one but I haven't written that down three oh one how about mark three or two
13:48three oh two come on then six plus four six plus four is ten and nine plus one nine plus
13:57one is another ten times together one hundred times three three hundred plus the two very nicely done three oh
14:04two
14:10very good so 47 plays 17 but now it's our chance to talk to Angelica and Angelica you were right
14:16in at the
14:17start of the one show and have been there ever since as a reporter tell us a little bit about
14:22the sort of
14:23things you get up to I think one what I love about the one choice that you get to do
14:27a variety of things and
14:28sort of delve into a variety of topics um I've done some random things whether it's been at the largest
14:34you know the birth of the largest litter of dogs um to working with Claude Littner who do you know
14:40um we set up a sort of like a surgery on Watford High Street about asking getting people to come
14:46in to
14:46say you know how would you ask your boss for a pay rise or and he was giving tips on
14:50on what you should
14:51say to your boss I took some valuable lessons from him got that pay rise and you know and various
14:56things
14:56like a couple of months ago I went to Newcastle University and I don't know many people didn't
15:01know that Martin Luther King got an honorary degree from Newcastle University he came into the country
15:05was for 24 hours quick you know and got the degree and then went back and then he you know
15:10assassinated
15:10you know a few months after that um you know did something on dominoes and NHS spectacles a couple of
15:18weeks ago I did something on that yes yeah so it's interesting about how how the got those you know
15:23NHS how
15:24everyone was allowed to have them but how they were so awful and ugly and it did affect a lot
15:29of people
15:30but you know now we're all wearing nice specs so they're looking wonderful and you're looking very
15:34great as well so yeah it's a variety of subjects and I get to meet interesting people who wouldn't
15:38normally have a voice and I've got something to share because I think no matter it doesn't mean
15:42you have to be famous but you still have a story to give and something to share now of course
15:47the
15:47fashion thing let me tell you about Claude for a second yes he's a nice giving tips about how to
15:52get a pay rise
15:53yes he told me a lot about you Claude has never given anybody a pay rise he's notorious for not
16:00giving people pay rises but he had some good tips a lot of people came in and it's interesting to
16:06know
16:06that a lot of people quite you know wary to go to ask their boss for you know the tip
16:11or to ask their
16:12boss for a rise yeah but you have to feel that if you've got you're valuable to a company and
16:16you're
16:16an asset you should go in they can always say no your boss can always say no but at least
16:20you've asked
16:21of course of the danger always is they'll say actually I've been meaning to talk to you about the
16:26level of pain in fact we're thinking about cutting
16:28yeah and you just say see ya bye I'll get another one well done thank you very much Angelica and
16:34now
16:35we're turning back to mark mark let us go okay can I start with a constant pleasure thank you mark

18:10extraordinary so we having a stab in the dark or did you know that enough you didn't use it yeah
18:15good for you now what about the corner what news Angelica me I didn't get very good I didn't get

20:01Yes, very good. It's a cassock worn by Roman Catholic priests. Indeed. Anything else? Farsen? Yes. Yeah, I've got farsen.
20:10But yeah, just one seven that we can find, too. That's it? Yeah. All right, well done. Sixty plays. Seventeen.
20:16Mark, your numbers, please. Too large and four small. Don't need to. Thank you, Mark. Two large. Four little ones.
20:23Thank you, Mark. And for this round, they are six, six, seven, eight.

21:08Yes, Mark? Three, five, two. Three, five, two, one away. How about Stella? Three, five, two. Both of you, Mark?
21:16Seven times fifty. Seven times fifty. Three hundred and fifty.
21:19And then eight minus six. E is the two. The one away. And Stella, same route? Yes, exactly the same.
21:26All right, just let Mark have a glance before we turn to Rachel to see how it's done properly.
21:32Um, you could have said six plus six is twelve minus eight is four. Add to fifty for fifty-four.
21:40Times that by seven for three hundred and seventy-eight. And take away the twenty-five.
21:44Look at that. Lovely stuff. Well done, Rachel. Well done. Brilliant.
21:50So, sixty-seven plays at twenty-four as we sweep effortlessly into a tea-time teaser, which is Ben's line.
21:57And the clue, Ben's line was in the water for ages, but all he caught were these. Ben's line was
22:02in the water for ages, but all he caught were these.
22:26He caught blennies. Blennies.
22:29Susie, help me out with blennies.
22:31They're small, spiny-finned marine fish, Nick. They have scaleless skin and a blunt head.
22:36and you'll find them in shallow, inshore waters.
22:38And you don't really want them?
22:40I don't think so.
22:42Not, well, no, there's lots of different types.
22:44There's an eel, blenny, and it comes in the Greek meaning mucus,
22:48so I think we'll leave it there.
22:49I think so. Thank you very much. Thank you.

26:16all right 80 points nonetheless to mark Stella on 31 but now it's time for Susie Susie what have you
26:24got
26:24for us today Susie's origins of words I well I'm going to just touch very briefly on a blue-blooded
26:32snobs and where both terms came from I'll start with snob the very original meaning of that was a
26:39shoemaker or a cobbler so in fact a snob once meant somebody a very low standing social status somebody
26:46who was quite humble in origins and it was any much later that it began to be applied to people
26:51who were
26:51trying to imitate somebody superior or of higher social standing and of course it then came to have
26:57the meaning that we noticed today but it completely flipped over the centuries blue-blooded goes back
27:03to the 8th century when the Moors invaded Spain for the first time and much of the country was under
27:08Moorish rule and during the Middle Ages fair-skinned Europeans called all Asian people and darker skinned
27:15people from the Mediterranean Moors meanwhile members of the aristocracy was particularly pale skin as a
27:22result of never intermarrying I guess with the Moorish population were called sangray azul or blue blood and
27:29the idea was that the veins under the skin appear much more visible in pale skin than it does in
27:34a darker
27:34skin and of course we know that the white Spanish nobility it thought themselves fundamentally different
27:40from the Moors were very snobbish about it what worse probably and sadly they thought the most totally
27:47socially inferior which is why blue-blooded began to be associated with somebody of higher social standing
27:52today it's neutralized a little bit so it means somebody perhaps a royal blood or aristocratic blood but
27:57it's still got that sense of looking down on people who didn't have those blue veins poking through their
28:01pale skin excellent stuff thank you very good very good as ever
28:10excellent thank you Susie 80 points to Stella's 31 we're back with Stella for a
