00:01This boy was pulled from a bus by officers in Canberra South in November last year who
00:08were on the lookout for an allegedly armed offender involved in violent robberies and
00:13carjackings. Once off the bus they pushed the boy to the ground, handcuffed him and
00:18arrested him and then they realised they had the wrong person. But after that police still
00:25searched him anyway and it's that search that the ACT and Commonwealth Ombudsman has found
00:31was unlawful. The report also pointed to aftercare errors when police sent the boy on his way
00:38without attempting to contact his family. There were also discussions about unconscious bias
00:43by officers who made assumptions the boy didn't have a contactable family and was homeless
00:48or couch surfing. But the Ombudsman found that race and racial profiling was not a factor
00:54in police conduct during the arrest. All up, the Ombudsman made eight recommendations
00:59and 22 findings. Police have agreed to five of those recommendations in full and three
01:05in principle. Among those are whether police should use race as a way to describe persons
01:12of interest and whether they need to create a definition for racial profiling. There will
01:18also be determinations as to what sanctions the police officers involved may receive.

01:24are pursuing, but they are not even less likely. But the police are not important or
