00:00You know what we're talking about today, the dress rehearsal, the get ready game, Washington,
00:07Detroit, a great measuring stick, all the data we were looking for.
00:12We wanted to see what's going to look like, Tobes.
00:15What are they going to do?
00:16Three plays.
00:18I blinked twice and I missed it.
00:21Yeah.
00:21Mark wants you for in Milwaukee.
00:24Tobes, what a letdown that was.
00:26Yeah, I mean, that was pretty pointless, right?
00:28I mean, three plays, two of them that I frankly don't ever want to see again.
00:33Yeah, I'm good on those.
00:35Draw plays, whatever.
00:36But yeah, it was kind of gross to watch.
00:37And defensively, it was good to see them get some turnover.
00:40So the vibe started high, right?
00:42Two drives, two turnovers for us.
00:44Like, okay, maybe this defense is going somewhere.
00:47And then you had the offense trot out there for three plays.
00:49And everything that we talked about last week where PFF ranked them 32nd in offensive line rankings.
00:56I think ESPN had them 31st.
00:58And everyone's like, well, maybe they're better than that.
01:01Didn't look like it on Saturday.
01:02They certainly did not.
01:04So I'm serious.
01:05I want to know.
01:06How are you feeling?
01:07They got three plays.
01:09Two were negative.
01:10An incomplete pass on a play that got blown up.
01:13A sack for minus 10 yards and a give up run.
01:16That's your starting offense's preseason.
01:18That's Jaden Daniels' preseason.
01:19Last year, it was four snaps.
01:21That included a touchdown run.
01:22So at least there was something to hang your hat on.
01:24They went backwards for two plays and a give up third down run and put his feet up.
01:29How are you feeling?
01:31800-636-1067.
01:33You feel better somehow?
01:35Maybe they're so confident that you're so confident.
01:37Do you feel the same?
01:39Do you feel worse?
01:40Like I think a lot of us do.
01:42800-636-1067.
01:43We want your reactions throughout the show.
01:45This is for you, Washington fans.
01:48I don't know how.
01:49Here's what I'll say real quick.
01:51The argument that you feel better or that you feel good rests upon your confidence that
01:59they're going to do things that they have not demonstrated yet.
02:03That's not unreasonable, by the way, because you probably were raised, like I was, with
02:07Joe Gibbs 1, where their preseasons were terrible.
02:10They never mattered.
02:11And their track record was so good, you didn't care when they looked like garbage in the preseason
02:15game 1, 2, 3, or 4, or 5.
02:16You still do six of them.
02:20But this group doesn't have that track record.
02:22This group has last year as their most recent sample, where you Cadillac through preseason,
02:28you Cadillac through OTAs, training camp, the whole nine yards, and it's a, we'll just
02:35see what happens with this buzzsaw of a schedule to start the year.
02:39You're counting on, if you're confident, you're counting on, they're going to show something
02:44that they haven't shown.
02:45I don't mean schematically.
02:46I mean, Josh Connerly blocks well.
02:49I mean, the line is good or better than this, despite the fact that they haven't looked at.
02:55You just assume things are going to be different.
02:57And that's not a crazy assumption, but it requires a leap of faith that I'm not willing
03:02to make, given last year.
03:03Yeah, I mean, it's concerning because of the fact that the center position looked awful,
03:08looked atrocious.
03:09Julian Good-Jones, I said this when they released Tyler Biotish in the offseason.
03:14And their first thing was, well, Nick Allegretti or Julian Good-Jones will be the starting
03:19center.
03:19To which I said, if Julian Good-Jones starts at center next season, someone needs to be
03:24fired.
03:25That cannot happen.
03:26And unfortunately for them, Nick Allegretti has been injured for most of training camp.
03:31And so it's not like that was something that was planned on.
03:33But you opened up a hole there that didn't have to be opened up.
03:37If they would have saved $10 million in cap space, Danny, by getting rid of Tyler Biotish,
03:42I wouldn't have much of an issue here.
03:43I would say, yeah, I kind of get it.
03:45And then they ended up in a bad spot because Allegretti got hurt.
03:47They saved negligible amounts of cap space.
03:50And it's not like they went out and signed.
03:52You know, they used their cap space a little bit more this offseason, but they still had
03:55some.
03:56It's not like they were down to their last cent and they're like, we got to save these
03:59$2 million or whatever it was on Biotish.
04:01And so in turn, Allegretti, what he's praised for is he's a very smart with his protections
04:07at the center position.
04:08And I can tell you this, they could have used some help there on Saturday because Julian
04:13Gajones and the two pass protection snaps did not look very good.
04:17The first one, he's fooled by a stunt.
04:19The second one, more so on the tight ends, on the play action fake there.
04:24But regardless, that's just not good.
04:26And the problem is, I haven't seen Nick Allegretti to give me confidence that when he's in the
04:31lineup, somehow everything's going to be fixed on the offensive line.
04:34They can't run the ball.
04:36Danny, yesterday or Saturday, 17 for 35.
04:39That's two yards a carry.
04:41That's not going to cut it.
04:42This is an offense that's going to want to be able to run the football so they can get
04:45to their play action.
04:47You can't do that when you're averaging two yards per carry.
04:50And I get that they're going to have Bill out there and they're going to have more dynamic
04:54backs than Katron Allen, but that's just not acceptable.
04:57It's not like there were holes that were there that weren't getting run through and they also
05:01weren't protecting in the pass game.
05:02So what exactly do you do here?
05:04Wasn't the Lions full ones either.
05:06I mean, I don't want to say like, it's too early to use the word panic, right?
05:12Panic is irresponsible.
05:14But I will tell you, you do this gig long enough and fortunate to do it for a little while
05:18now.
05:19And you can kind of fast forward through stuff and see where the road's going.
05:24Now, every once in a while, you're delightfully surprised and that's fun.
05:27That's great when that happens.
05:28I love that.
05:28Like for two years ago, I didn't see 12 and five at the NFC title game.
05:32I don't know who did other than the blind Homer that tells you that it's going to happen
05:36every year and you've been right for the first time in 30 plus seasons.
05:40This doesn't look good.
05:42It doesn't.
05:44And either you put no weight on it, little weight on it, some weight on it, a lot of weight
05:50on it.
05:50For those of you that are walking around puffing your chest out going, just wait and see.
05:53We got something for the NFC East.
05:55Just wait.
05:56Daniels will fix it or whatever.
05:59It's a, I'm not putting much weight on this.
06:01And that's your right.
06:02You're allowed to do that.
06:03Because again, it's hard to figure out how to weigh these samples.
06:05Because to your point, the carries total and yardage total you just gave.
06:10I don't know how to judge that.
06:12That's sometimes twos against threes and threes against twos and fours and practice squad
06:16guys and whatever.
06:17I just know that it hasn't looked very good.
06:20Their touchdown came on a fumble that Benny Hill musicked around into the end zone.
06:25Their offense, their starting offense with the quarterback that I love so much played
06:29three plays.
06:31One of them was a give up run.
06:33And that's going to be it, guys.
06:35That's going to be it.
06:36That's your prep.
06:37They play in however many weeks it is.
06:39They have their last preseason game and then two weeks off.
06:42This is it.
06:43That was the sample.
06:44The amount of times that David Blau radioed in a play to Jaden Daniels, he said it in
06:48the huddle, and then they executed it was three times.
06:50Three.
06:51That's it.
06:52And if the whole point was, they've looked so great at the joint practices.
06:59They've looked so great here and there.
07:01And we'll see next week, of course, with the next set of joint practices.
07:04Assuming the Ravens don't cancel because they did that last year.
07:06That's why I make that zing.
07:09I'm hoping.
07:10I'm along with you guys.
07:11I'm hoping that we shouldn't put any weight on this.
07:13You can laugh at me.
07:14In a month, if they somehow start four and one with this buzzsaw of a schedule, you
07:19know, they drop one maybe to Dallas or Seattle and they surprise the world and beat
07:23Philadelphia and, you know, they're in the driver's seat.
07:26They're kicking everyone's ass.
07:26Bring this up.
07:27Laugh at me.
07:28Mock me.
07:28I please.
07:29I welcome it because we'll all be happy and we'll have a great laugh about it later
07:33that I can't believe we were putting weight on this.
07:36My point all along this preseason, this training camp and everything under the sun was I would
07:43treat doing me.
07:44This is me.
07:44Danny Ruye.
07:45I'm not in charge and I shouldn't be.
07:47But if I was, I would treat last season as such an epic disaster and they acted accordingly
07:53to some degree.
07:54They moved on from coordinators, which I'm grateful they did that, especially on defense
07:57where during the worst losing streak of my lifetime, they had Joe Witt change seats.
08:01That was it.
08:03I would go every paradigm that I have about how to build a football team, about how to
08:10run training camp and OTAs and lead-ups and practices and everything else needs to be
08:14thoroughly examined and probably changed, probably course corrected to a degree.
08:19And there's been more intensity.
08:21Is it enough for you?
08:22I'm asking you guys rhetorically.
08:24I know not everyone's been able to be there.
08:25Tobes has been there a bunch.
08:26Is this enough?
08:27Did that look like a group that's ready to rock?
08:30A group that's ready to go?
08:31Detroit did.
08:33A lot of teams around the league haven't, but they've got track records.
08:36This group doesn't.
08:37And I'm worried, man.
08:39I guess that's where I'm at.
08:40Yeah.
08:40I mean, I think to me, this is different because of so many.
08:44You look around the National Football League and there are teams that play their starters.
08:47There are teams that don't.
08:48The reason that I think this is such a thing here is third-year quarterback who missed a
08:54lot of last season due to injuries.
08:55So you'd like to see him get out there and play.
08:57Last season was such a disaster.
08:59And a lot of what they're doing in terms of preseason usage is similar to what they did
09:05last season.
09:06And you have two new coordinators.
09:08So you'd like to see some of this stuff run at full speed just to get a little bit of
09:11a
09:12taste of what you're doing in real game action.
09:15And Dan Quinn, to his credit, has said that they were going to run a more competitive
09:19camp, and they have.
09:20But in terms of preseason action, there's not a lot different here.
09:24And the thing I question a little bit is teams put so much weight on these joint practices,
09:31and I understand why they do, because it's a controlled environment.
09:36You can, as much as possible, ensure that your quarterback's not going to get touched.
09:40He's not going to get injured.
09:41And that's really, in Washington's case, right, in teams around the league, as long as your
09:47quarterback is healthy, you feel like you've got a shot, regardless of some of the other
09:50stuff we're talking about, just the feeling in the building.
09:52If Marcus Mariota has to start week one, the feeling in Ashburn is way different than if
09:57Jaden Daniel starts week one, regardless of what they look like.
09:59So I understand that.
10:00But I do think there's something to be said for playing football, because a joint practice
10:06is still practice.
10:08It's not football.
10:09Jaden can't get hit.
10:10But I want to see him out there processing, understanding, hey, I can actually get hit
10:15here.
10:16There's a difference in your mindset when you play football, understanding that it's live,
10:20whether it's he gets outside the pocket and decides to scramble in a practice, or he throws
10:23it away in a game, or the pocket breaks down and he throws it away, or he takes a sack,
10:28or those sorts of things.
10:29This is processing speed up to stuff.
10:31That's what I want to see is in real game action with a brand new offense for a quarterback.
10:38And frankly, I'm not as worried as Grant has made the point that he hasn't played a lot
10:42of football going back to last Halloween.
10:44And I understand that that's a valid point.
10:46I'm not as worried about that, but it is something that's completely valid.
10:49Guy hasn't played a ton of football and didn't really look like himself last year.
10:53So I'd like to just see him run through 12, 15 plays.
10:57I don't quite understand the idea of he's playing one series no matter what.
11:02Well, I would say we're playing until we get at least some sort of headway.
11:06And if you're not going to get any headway, then you're probably going to have to suit
11:08up next week.
11:09Yeah.
11:09If the line is that the line or the center position or whatever, and I got a note on
11:13that here in a second, isn't very good.
11:15So we can't play.
11:16Then again, everyone should be freaking out.
11:19That makes sense.
11:20If you don't have Nick Allegretti, a guy that's been a career backup offensive lineman
11:23who's bounced around as kind of a guard with a couple of games at center and some practices
11:28that you're counting on to be the dude.
11:29If the line can't function without him, you don't have a line.
11:32That's worth a damn.
11:33Julian Good Jones is going to play this year.
11:35Dan Quinn at the podium moments ago said that Matt Goldman will go back to exclusively center.
11:41So give you an idea that we're not just making this up.
11:45And further, KB on Twitter, I'm at funny, Danny, at Toby underscore Altizer, I believe
11:48on the Twitterverse.
11:51KB just brought this up.
11:52I think it's correct.
11:53Dan Quinn saw what we saw.
11:55They're not doing a walkthrough today.
11:56They're practicing today.
11:58They said, uh-uh, we can't do this anymore.
12:01We gave you guys maybe too much time.
12:03Who knows exactly the logistics?
12:04But some context clues are telling you that they saw the same thing that a lot of us saw,
12:10that it ain't good enough right now.
12:12So again, Matt Goldman, I believe their sixth-round pick, will go back to working exclusively at
12:18center after what they saw on film.
12:21800-636-1067.
12:23Let's go to Steve in Arlington.
12:25How are you feeling, man, after that preseason game?
12:28Hey, guys.
12:29Hey, buddy.
12:30Yeah.
12:31Hey, I echo everything that you're saying, and I love all the shows on the fan, but you
12:37guys, thank you for being, I'm going to say, objectively critical.
12:41Right?
12:41Everybody, it seems like nobody can touch Jaden Daniels at all.
12:46There's a bias against trying to make it look rosy, but I think you guys have hit it right
12:51on the head.
12:52They can either play him in preseason, and the chances are he's going to get hurt, but
12:58the chances are that he's going to be better prepared for when the games actually start,
13:02or they can take a bigger risk, in my opinion, of playing him when the season starts.
13:08And if he gets hurt, you're in no different situation.
13:12So it makes no sense to me, other than the fact that I think they know they have a problem.
13:18Right?
13:18And I love Jaden Daniels.
13:20I was, you know, everybody's excited about him coming here, but I think they know they
13:24have a problem, and they're really not addressing it, as we know it goes in these things.
13:29And then the other thing I would say everybody's kind of ignoring is the quarterback from Rutgers,
13:34I'm going to try to say his name, 8th and Terry Akas, I mean, he did a great job.
13:41And so what was the difference in the line when he was in, right?
13:45And if it was second versus third stringers, as opposed to first versus second stringers.
13:49Yeah, it may be that, Steve.
13:50And I appreciate the phone calls always, 800-636-1067.
13:54I didn't, I couldn't pause and figure out which Lions were in the game, the twos, the threes.
13:59I'm watching the local broadcasts with our guy Brian Mitchell and Helly and Rigo.
14:03So, you know, and they're not going to give you, okay, let's set the scene here.
14:08It's now a combination of this set of twos, it's the three linebackers, but it's the top corners.
14:14I have no idea.
14:15So that's always so hard.
14:17I mean, we've, again, we're DC fans.
14:20We've lived through, hey, this guy, you know, Trent Green, the third string guy's better
14:24than the first two guys.
14:25Does that matter at all?
14:26Or Gus Farrat's pretty good.
14:27Do we care?
14:27And eventually they would earn, you know, starting roles.
14:30So I'm not suggesting anything.
14:32I don't even know if he is, that the Suflaki slinger is ready to take over the starting
14:37gig over Jaden Daniels.
14:38I'll put the kibosh on that right away.
14:40But if the point is the line didn't look good, I'll co-sign that.
14:45Yeah.
14:45And to me, Brian Mitchell brought this up about a week ago, and I thought it was an interesting
14:50point.
14:50They can do whatever they want, Danny, but eventually they're going to get judged.
14:55And that day comes up on September 13th against the Eagles.
14:58And we can panic, hit the panic button, scream, and say this is stupid and everything.
15:02And if they come out and look good, call me an idiot.
15:05On Twitter, call in, I don't really care.
15:07That's fine.
15:07I will gladly take that, and I hope that's the case.
15:10I just know that what I'm watching right now, it does not certainly look like they're
15:13ready to play football.
15:14And look, you don't have to be in mid-season form, but you have to be able to function.
15:18You have to at least be able to run a play without Jaden Daniels looking like he's already
15:23going to get put in the grave.
15:24Like, he snaps the ball and has no chance.
15:27Like, I wanted to see...
15:28Dead on arrival, two plays.
15:29Guess what?
15:29If Jaden Daniels completed two passes on Saturday, and he looked like himself, we would have a
15:34joyous time.
15:35Even if it was, they picked up one first down, it'd be like, oh man, it was nice to see
15:38Jaden Slingo.
15:38He couldn't even throw the ball!
15:40Yeah, if we're here, that's a good point.
15:42If it's three plays because they went 80 yards in three plays, because they ripped off a catch
15:45and run, and something great happened, you go, what are they supposed to do?
15:49The offense is too effective.
15:51He sure as bleep wasn't that.
15:52You guys saw that, right?
15:54800-636-106-106.
15:55The question's simple.
15:57After that second preseason game, the dress rehearsal, the much hyped, and again, you
16:01know, whether their plan was to play one series and that was it and they stuck to it or whatever,
16:06but it was uninspiring.
16:08You feel better, worse, or the same?
16:11Because that's it.
16:12That's our look.
16:13That's what we're getting of Jaden Daniels and the offense.
16:15Unless something dramatic changes, I can't imagine it would, but that's the sample we got
16:19this preseason.
16:21Do you feel better, worse, or the same?
16:23800-636-106-7.
16:26It's Grant Daniel, the fan.
16:26Tobes in for GP.
16:27Don't go anywhere.
