00:21I mean, I've known B. Mitch for 20-plus years, and, you know, Riggo and I don't know each other

00:27but I grew up as one of his biggest fans, and it sounds trite, but, I mean, it's a dream

00:34Like, it's a bucket list type gig.
00:35Have you done it before?
00:37I feel like you've been involved in the preseason broadcast, but have you called it?
00:40I did the preseason games for the Titans for six years.
00:42Okay, I knew that.
00:43But not when you were here with four?
00:45No, it was, I believe it was Kenny Albert when I was here.
00:49Yeah, it was.
00:50Kenny did it forever.
00:51Joe, wasn't it?
00:51And then before, George did it for a while, like a couple years, back in the day.

01:00So, it's one thing to control him.

01:02Controlling Riggo.
01:03What is, like, when they reached out to you and told you, because I know as soon as you sent

01:08I was thrilled, you know, because you want to do something like this with someone you know.

01:13You know, too many times people get in the booth with a stranger, and you can feel that.
01:17You know, when you know somebody, it's much easier because it seems like a conversation.
01:21Yeah.
01:22We had talked a little bit, and I knew that you were going to be one of the guys, and
01:26then found out later
01:27that it was going to be John.
01:29And, yeah, I was pumped.
01:33It's going to be story time with Riggo for three hours on Friday or Saturday.
01:38You know, the games are obviously not on Sunday in the preseason.
01:41But, yeah, it's going to be great, and it's going to be fun to see some of these young kids.
01:44Yeah.
01:45It's going to be fun.
01:46Probably, obviously, not going to see a lot of the starters or Jaden.
01:49I would imagine they'll get a series or two.
01:51I need to see some of them.

01:54Yeah.
01:54Obviously, you're worried about injury.
01:58But it's a brand-new offense.

02:02So, I think, like, I'm watching them out there in practice ever since the first day,
02:06and I look at the intensity, which I think it upped.
02:10And I think that's what you need.
02:12I don't think you have to hit each other, take them to the ground, but you have to move fast.
02:16Because football is fast, not slow.

02:18So, as long as they give me that and I see a little bit of that, you can get them
02:22in a game
02:22and call a place where you get the ball in his hands in two seconds.

02:25I'm cool with that.
02:26Well, it's the whole operation, too, right?

02:28Getting the play in, listening to it in the helmet.
02:30You just got to get back on the horse a little bit, get a good drive or two under your
02:34belt,
02:35and then you're good to go.
02:36There's obviously a lot of coaches that don't play their starters at all in the preseason.
02:41McVay in L.A. has been that way since the day he got there.
02:43But they have guys that have been in the league for double-digital years, a lot of them.
02:48And I think it's easier that way.
02:50But when you get all these young guys and your two coordinators are young,
02:53I think you owe it to them to at least give them a chance to show you that you can
02:58pull back.
02:59You know, I just always felt like when I got here, I remember D. Green,
03:02I was talking with him on Saturday.
03:04He said, well, B., when you got here, you had a bunch of grown men on the team.
03:08True.
03:09It's not a bunch of grown men.
03:10Great point.
03:11Yeah.
03:11And even the guys that are now expected to do a lot, top guys, like, Tunsil, yes.
03:17Everybody else, five years, six years, maybe four.
03:20So, you need to have some level of those guys getting out and playing together to show you.
03:26Because football is football.
03:28And I don't think you get better playing football until you play football.
03:32But you had a chance to go out here and watch them today.
03:34I know you've been looking at stuff.
03:35But to see them out there today, what do you think?
03:39Fast.
03:40Everything's fast, right?
03:41And they're obviously working in a condensed space there on the 20- or 30-yard line.
03:46And there were some – Yankoff made some nice grabs.
03:52The secondary, I was impressed with how they were moving around.
03:56Cross was all over the place.
03:59Dude, old 98 coming off the edge.
04:01It can make some noise.
04:02He's fast, isn't he?
04:03Now, the question is, is he going to be the guy the first four or five games in Baltimore?
04:07Or is he going to be the guy that was with the Chargers for that last 11 or 12 games
04:10of the year?
04:11Or, you know, a couple of years ago when he had 10 sacks for the Ravens?
04:14Yeah.
04:16They have players.
04:17Do they have enough playmakers, I guess, during the course of the season?
04:22I think they do.
04:23I think they're going to be able to spread the ball around.
04:25I called a Rashad White game when Jaden Daniels was at Arizona State.
04:31And to be honest, I was more impressed in that particular game with Rashad White than I was with Jaden.
04:38He went off now.
04:39He's so smooth in the way he runs and operates.
04:42He can catch the ball anywhere.
04:44He can function as a receiver.
04:46You can split him out.
04:48I don't think he's been getting enough attention or love.
04:51You know.
04:51Oh, he's been getting it for me.
04:53See, everyone has been talking all year about the number two receiver.
04:56But for me, I'm not concerned about that.
04:58When you have Chig on the roster.
05:00That's your number two receiver.
05:01It could be.
05:02Because when you look at tight ends in the league today, tight ends are as sexy as receivers.
05:07You know, you've got the team that the tight end leads in receptions, leads in yards.
05:12So if you've got a guy that's going to have a distinct advantage over most linebackers or safeties, you have
05:17to look at that.
05:18But, you know, fans, they hear.
05:20And everything with fans is about what's called fantasy football.
05:25Well, that's why you're talking about the number two receiver, right?
05:27Who's going to be the other guy that I'm going to draft in the ninth or tenth round for my
05:30team?
05:31Who's it going to be?
05:33I think they're going to spread it out.
05:34I think there'll be different guys every game that step up.
05:38We had Trey Burks in Tennessee when I was down there for a little while.
05:42And he stepped into a really difficult situation.
05:46They got into a contract dispute with A.J. Brown, ended up trading him to Philadelphia.
05:50They got a first-round pick in return.
05:53And that's who they drafted.
05:54And they came in with some hamstring injuries.
05:56And that was his most productive year.
05:58Yeah.
05:58It was that first year in Tennessee.
06:00And we obviously saw that great catch last year from above.
06:02Yes, yes, yes.
06:03We need to see more, right?
06:04He could be that guy.
06:05Deion could be that guy.
06:06So, when he's healthy, and you've seen him, I guess, as healthy as when you were in Tennessee,
06:11what can he be?
06:13Trey Burks.
06:14He has all the tools.
06:16And I don't know exactly what it is that's been holding him back besides injuries.
06:20I think it's the route running.
06:22I think it's the detail to the position.
06:25I would imagine now going into his fourth or fifth year,
06:28he probably feels more comfortable, especially being able to come back to a place where he was last year.
06:36He's not as consistent as you would like him to be, right?
06:39Still for a relatively young player.
06:42But he can't be that big-body receiver who goes over the middle.
06:46He can also be a guy that stretches the field.

07:00Dan, what's your style of play-by-play?
07:04What would you say it is?
07:06I think more people want to hear the analysts than want to hear me.
07:09So my style is to get you guys engaged and telling stories.
07:13We're going to be talking about the game, of course.
07:15But preseason is a very different call.
07:17You get to promote your team.
07:18You don't have to promote the other people.
07:19Right.
07:20It's a very different call.
07:21Now, there's going to be some interesting storylines, too, with some of the other teams, right?
07:24But I want to hear from John Riggins.
07:27I want to hear from Brian Mitchell.
07:29I want you guys to bring to light what these guys are going through and tie it to your careers.
07:38And then I also want to live in the moment, too, right?
07:39There's going to be some great plays.
07:41Yes.
07:41You know, there's going to be – I'm blanking on his name, right?
07:44Jaden Bradley, right?
07:45The new receiver that came in.
07:46I called a couple of his games at UNLV.
07:48He's a really good player.
07:49We're probably going to see a lot of him in the preseason.
07:51Does he make the roster?
07:52Who knows?
07:53But those are the kind of guys and storylines that are going to evolve and develop throughout preseason.
07:58Every year there's somebody, right?
07:59You know, back in the day, the preseason hero was Babe Laufenberg.

08:03Still see him around all the time, you know, when he's doing Cowboys.
08:07I actually was in the booth when Troy Aikman and Joe Buck were calling a game,
08:12and standing right next to Joe Buck in the booth was Babe Laufenberg.
08:16He's kind of his stats guy.
08:17He gives him all these nuggets and helps him with the flow of the game.
08:20Yeah.
08:21So, anyway, there's going to be guys that most people have never heard of who are preseason heroes,
08:27and those are going to be fun storylines to watch.
08:28I'm looking forward to Henry, the little running back from, I think, was it Texas San Antonio?
08:35UTSA.
08:36Who had an unbelievable game against Texas A&M, which had one of the best defenses out there.
08:41You saw him do that against them, so you know that kid's going to have, and he'll probably be playing
08:46a lot, too.
08:47Oh, yeah.
08:47They've got to beat somebody.
08:48It'll probably be him and, I guess, Fat Man, Katron Allen will be doing a lot of running the ball,
08:55and they have different styles.
08:57So, I'm looking for that because when we had Cliff, we saw a certain level of a running game.
09:02I want to see this different style of thing, more the zone blocking and all that.
09:07I'm so fascinated by the running back position as well.
09:10You have Katron Allen, who's the leading rusher in Penn State history.
09:14And he's a late-round draft pick because that's a position where you can find guys like an Alfred Morris,
09:20right,
09:21from FAU who just kind of comes out of nowhere.
09:24Why is it so difficult to predict who's going to be productive in the NFL at the running back position?
09:30Do they just base so much on measurables these days?
09:33Today, with running backs, I just think one – like, Katron made the comment earlier.
09:37So, he said, I'm different – you will see that I'm different in pads.
09:44In other words, a lot of people that go out there and, you know, in shorts, I hear a lot
09:49of fans,
09:49a lot of media people too, lose their minds over a running back in practice when he has on –
09:55I call it t-shirt panties – when he has on nothing that he can use.
09:59But as soon as he changes that and put on those pads, you go, oh, now I see why he's
10:04good.
10:04But – and for him to be the leading rusher in Penn State history says a lot.
10:09Yeah.
10:10And he was sharing time with another guy.
10:12Yeah.
10:12Think about that.
10:13I mean, Saquon, Blair Thomas.
10:15I mean, there's a long list of incredible running backs who have been at Penn State.
10:19Yeah.
10:20So, there's been a lot of talk about the second receiver.
10:23We mentioned that earlier.
10:24And one guy who basically has become a fan of the team, I don't think he's going to be coming
10:29here.
10:30That's my opinion.
10:31I don't know.
10:33Stephon Diggs?
10:34Not Diggs.
10:35That's the question I want to know, though.
10:36Do you think Diggs would be a good fit?
10:38I was talking about Jaden's other teammate who has become –
10:41Oh, are you?
10:42Oh, Lord.
10:43I figure you'd get tired of talking about him.
10:45I have.
10:45That's what I'm saying.
10:46I don't think he's coming.
10:48So, Diggs, would he be a good fit, do you think?
10:50I think Diggs would be a great fit.
10:53He's a good locker room guy.
10:54He's well-liked.
10:55He's coming off a 1,000-yard season.
10:56He's a year removed from that injury.
10:59He played for a great coach that I have a ton of respect for in Mike Vrabel up there in
11:03New England.
11:04And by all accounts, Vrabel was a big fan.
11:07I don't know what it is.
11:09Maybe he wants multiple years.
11:11He doesn't want to sign a one-year deal.
11:12Maybe it's too much money.
11:14I mean, I already have a number in my head.
11:15I would give it to him right now in terms of guaranteed money, right?
11:18Give him two years and $12 million guaranteed, I'm talking about.
11:23I think he would be helpful.
11:25I just think his experience in that room – obviously, you have Terry.
11:30Terry's the guy.
11:32But there's a lot of other young guys out there, and he would be a good balance.
11:35And you throw him into that mix, all of a sudden you have another playmaker.
11:38In all your years of watching preseason, and like you said, everyone writes a story.
11:43It's a big play.
11:44What's the one you remember the most from a player on maybe the home team
11:49or the team that were playing against them?
11:50Well, that's a great question.
11:53Isaiah Likely.
11:54The tight end for the Ravens popped during a game in Tennessee.
12:00And I didn't really know much about him or who he was.
12:03But the way that he moves at that size, I said he's going to have a nice long career in
12:08the NFL.
12:09That's the one I kind of remember where I'm like, oh, wow, he's legit.
12:12So I just think back to James Strash.
12:16I forgot what year it was, but James comes in, he returns one touchdown.
12:21Then he returns another one.
12:23I'm like, whoa, whoa, whoa.
12:25Don't return another one, dude.
12:26You know who else?
12:28I'm on a team with you, and you're doing stuff in my position.
12:32You're like, yeah, yeah, I don't know.
12:34But, nah, I remember he and I had a conversation.
12:37He said, man, I'm trying to get your position.
12:42And he said, you help me at all causes.
12:44And I told him, I said, when I first got to the league, I didn't think veteran guys would try
12:47to help you.
12:48And Ernest Biner did for me.
12:50So I said, I'm going to always be this way because, listen, man, if you take my job, you're going
12:54to be damn good
12:55because I'm going to be good.
12:55I'm going to make sure.
12:56And I think that's the thing where, what I look at for training camp, I watch guys, the guy in
13:02their position,
13:03how much they're helping them.
13:04Because you see some guys, they never talk to the young guy.
13:07The other guys, every five seconds, they're having a conversation.
13:10Because I think it makes a difference about the team and not necessarily just you.
13:14Do you remember when Baltimore drafted Lamar Jackson?
13:17And I think it was Joe Flacco.
13:18And he said, it's not my job to help him.
13:21Obviously, they're very different quarterbacks, right?
13:23Yeah, yeah, yeah.
13:25But it's in all aspects of life.
13:27I see that in my business a lot when there are these young guys that are coming up.
13:31And there were so many people that helped me.
13:33I always want to pay it forward.
13:34And you love to see guys do that.
13:36But it's such a unique workplace, as you know, being in a running back room, a receiver room, a linebacker
13:40room,
13:40and somebody's trying to steal your job like James Thrash back in the day.
13:43But you've got to have confidence in yourself.
13:45And I think, like, once you get to this level, if you're afraid of competition, you're the wrong guy for
13:52the job.
13:53100%.
13:53You know, and I've always felt that way.
13:56You know, Jay and I have been working together forever now, too.
14:00I don't care what's the profession I'm in.
14:04If I have something I can help you with, I'm going to give it to you.
14:07I don't understand people that don't want to help people.
14:09It doesn't make sense to me.
14:11It doesn't make sense to me.
14:11I don't understand people who are jerks either, right?
14:14I mean, we're all humans.
14:15I was telling the story about how I used to see Belichick up on the podium.
14:21And it would kind of drive me crazy because he was just – he would be relatively disrespectful to certain
14:26people
14:26and make people feel less than.
14:30And then I had the opportunity with Willie McGinnis covering a Patriots training camp for NFL Network.
14:35And Mac wanted to go in and work out early.
14:38We go into a Gold's gym?
14:39He goes, no, we're going to the facility.
14:42And I'm coming from D.C. where you don't dream of going into the facility during training camp
14:48and working out as a media member, right?
14:50So we get there, and it's – you know, it's Willie McGinnis.
14:53He's beloved there.
14:54He's a Patriots Hall of Famer.
14:55We walk in.
14:56They hand me a stack of Patriots gear with a bar of soap on top, tennis shoes, you know, workout
15:02shorts,
15:02just like I, like, enlisted in the military.
15:05And we get dressed and he's like, all right, you ready?
15:07I got my trainer in there.
15:08He's going to come work us out.
15:09I got the same guy when I played here.
15:10And I'm like, if I see Bill Belichick, I don't know what I'm going to do.
15:15First person we see when we walk into the weight room, Bill Belichick.
15:19And I'm nearly crap myself.
15:21I was so nervous.
15:23And Willie's like, it's all right, Coach.
15:25He's one of us.
15:25And I got to listen to Bill just chop it up with Willie McGinnis for 15 minutes
15:29and just tell stories and just be a regular guy.
15:32That's so cool.
15:33That is what – that's the – people don't ever see that of a coach.
15:37Right.
15:37Like, those coaches put on an act for the media a lot.
15:41But when they're with their players, they let all guards down
15:44and become somebody different.
15:46Well, even when we did the Annapolis Touchdown Club dinner.
15:49So last –

15:50I guess this winter, February, Annapolis Touchdown Club, long tradition.
15:54They honored B and they honored Belichick.
15:56And I've emceeded for a couple years.
15:59And because Belichick basically grew up there, you know, Naval Academy is such a big part of his life.
16:04And Bill afterwards was just one of the dudes.
16:07You know what I mean?
16:07Like, we were just sitting there talking.
16:09And it's funny when you get to take guys out of their element because you're right.
16:13Like, he does try to belittle people at the podium and stuff.
16:16But –
16:16I think it's a challenge, though.
16:18I think he does it to see –
16:18It's almost a game for him.
16:20He wants to know who he can really believe in and will they quit because he was tough on them.
16:26You may be right.
16:27That's what John Thompson was.
16:29I'm telling you.

16:32Dude, before you finish that story, I have a great John Thompson story.
16:36So, I'm covering a Georgetown game.
16:39And I sit down in a seat on press row, like courtside, right?
16:45And Big John looks – and it was next to John Thompson.
16:48And I was so excited.
16:48You know, growing up in the area, you're a big Georgetown fan.
16:52And he looks at me and he goes, that's not your seat.
16:54I go, oh, sorry, coach.
16:56He goes, get on out of here.
16:59And he just kicked me out of the chair.
17:00Well, Ronnie was coming.
17:01Ronnie was coming to sit in the seat and, you know, watch the game.
17:05And he later on the radio actually apologized.
17:10He felt bad about it.
17:11I was so nervous.
17:13But he is – he just has that larger-than-life personality.
17:16You're halfway expecting him to have the towel on his shoulder
17:18as he's sitting there watching the game, right?
17:20And that's a little bit like Belichick.
17:22But when you get to know him and when you get to see him,
17:24it's a different atmosphere.
17:26I mean, Dan Quinn, I think, is different in that what you see is what you get.
17:30He's a very affidavit guy.
17:32He's gregarious almost.
17:32Yeah.
17:33Now, as somebody that's here every day, he doesn't tell you anything.
17:36And he prides himself on – Quinn.
17:38He prides himself on answering a question and providing nothing.
17:41Like, he'll laugh about it as he's walking out of the room.
17:44Andy Reid, same way.
17:46Yeah.
17:47Dude, obviously, calling the preseason is going to mean a lot for you
17:51as a kid that grew up here loving the Burgundy and Gold.
17:53From a straight football perspective, what are you most excited to see?
17:59I'm excited to see this new-look defense and how fast they're moving
18:03and just situational, right?
18:06Third and short, third and long, red zone.
18:10I'm excited to see – there's so many things I'm excited to see
18:14that we're probably not going to see in the preseason, right?
18:15We're going to see the starters for a couple of series, I would imagine.
18:18I'm excited to see how they look in that new offense.
18:21How does the running back situation play out?
18:24Bea and I were just talking while you were going, JP,
18:27about how everybody's so hyper-focused on the number two receiver situation
18:31and the fact that Chig will probably end up being the second most targeted guy
18:35and have the second most receptions on the team.
18:37And, you know, Rashad could end up having 50 catches.
18:41Totally.
18:41You know?

18:42They're going to be massive pieces.
18:44That catch he had down the right sideline was pretty phenomenal today.
18:48He told a story.
18:49He called the game with Rashad and Jaden.
18:51Oh, at ASU.
18:53He left more impressed with Rashad than he did Jaden.

18:59I tell you what, Rashad White's funny, too.
19:01I don't know if you saw this on social media or whatever.
19:03Last week, it might have been the first day of camp,
19:05was also Sam Hartman's birthday.
19:07And Jaden was walking down, yo, it's Sam Hartman's birthday,
19:10it's Sam Hartman's birthday.
19:11And Rashad White goes, man, you guys are like Chuck and Larry.
19:14If you remember that Adam Sandler movie with the two dudes.
19:17It was very funny.
19:18He just seems like a cool, very ready-for-his-role type of player.
19:24I think one guy I think we'll get to see some of in preseason is Sonny.
19:30And watching Styles today and pads, he just seems to be in the right place
19:35for a rookie.
19:36You know what I mean?
19:37It doesn't seem like we're missing many assignments.
19:39But you're right.
19:39Just the whole Durante Jones defense, how much more aggressive it's going to be.
19:44You're busy on NFL Sundays.
19:45You're all over the league.
19:46I don't know how much of last year you got to watch,
19:50but defensively it got bad.
19:52Oh, he knew.

19:54Well, that's why I love Nick Cross coming in here.

20:01I just think you're going to be more sound across the board in that aggressive
20:07defense that they're going to be running.

20:15You know, you bring in an edge rusher, you pay him $100 million.
20:19You have some faith.
20:19He's looked good, too.
