00:00The Grand Theft Auto 6 leaks just keep coming.
00:02We're now talking about 9 gameplay videos released in the span of a single week,
00:07despite Take-Two Interactive taking legal action to try to identify whoever is behind them.
00:13And at this point, I think there's a bigger conversation we need to have.
00:17Not just about the leaks themselves, not just about Rockstar trying to stop them,
00:22but about why these leaks are having such an impact in the first place.
00:25Because Rockstar has shown us very little actual gameplay from GTA 6,
00:30and with the official Netflix presentation coming up on August 27th,
00:35Rockstar now has a huge opportunity to take back control of the conversation,
00:39because after everything that's happened this week, they better actually show us something.
00:45According to the latest reports, the personal group operating under the name CyberLeak
00:49has continued releasing GTA 6 footage despite Take-Two's legal efforts.
00:54The latest video reportedly shows Jason driving to a gas station,
00:58causing some chaos, and stealing a pickup truck from a conspiracy theorist.
01:02That brings the reported total to 9 gameplay videos released this week.
01:07Previous footage has included driving in armed robberies, supercars, and gameplay inside a strip club.
01:14And what's particularly concerning for Rockstar is that some of these videos reportedly contain portions of cutscenes.
01:20That raises the possibility that whoever is responsible may have access to a playable build of the game
01:26containing much more than isolated gameplay footage.
01:30Take-Two has already issued subpoenas involving Microsoft and Discord,
01:33and has now reportedly gone after X for information that could help identify the people behind the CyberLeak accounts.
01:40Microsoft has confirmed that it is cooperating with Rockstar and Take-Two,
01:44while Discord has also acknowledged that it responds to a valid legal request.
01:49So this is clearly something Take-Two is taking seriously.
01:52And understandably so.
01:54Now there is an interesting recall here.
01:57The leaked videos have promoted a cryptocurrency token associated with the CyberLeak persona.
02:02That's led a lot of people to assume that this is primarily about making money.
02:07But there's a comment I've seen that is worth mentioning.
02:10Someone claimed that the leaker actually trashed or abandoned the cryptocurrency to demonstrate that the leaks aren't about money.
02:17Now I can't independently verify that claim, so I'm not going to present it as fact.
02:22But if it's true, it certainly changes how we should look at the situation.
02:26Maybe the cryptocurrency was never the primary motivation.
02:30Maybe it was a way of attracting attention.
02:32Maybe the person behind the leaks genuinely believes they're making some kind of statement about the future of gaming,
02:38digital ownership, or consumers losing the ability to resell games.
02:43Or maybe there's still another motivation we don't know about.
02:46The truth is, we don't know.
02:48And until we know who's actually behind CyberLeak and what their motivations are,
02:53I think it's better to focus on what we can actually see.
02:56And what we can see is a whole lot of GTA VI gameplay appearing online.
03:01And this brings me to my biggest issue with Rockstar.
03:04They haven't shown us enough.
03:06I'm not asking Rockstar to spoil the story.
03:09I'm not asking them to reveal every mission.
03:12I'm not asking them to show us the ending.
03:15I want to see gameplay.
03:17How does driving actually feel?
03:19How does shooting work?
03:20How does the police system work?
03:22How interactive is Vice City?
03:24How do NPCs react to Jason and Lucia?
03:28What can we actually do when we're not following a mission?
03:31How much has Rockstar's open world formula evolved since Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2?
03:37These are completely reasonable questions.
03:40And yet, Rockstar has been extremely careful about showing us the answers.
03:44We've gotten trailers.
03:45We've gotten screenshots.
03:47We've gotten information about Jason and Lucia.
03:50We've gotten information about the world.
03:52But we've seen very little extended, uninterrupted gameplay.
03:55And that's becoming increasingly noticeable now that other people are showing it for them.
04:00Now, before anyone says I'm criticizing Rockstar for not spoiling their own game,
04:05I understand why they're doing this.
04:07Absolutely.
04:08Rockstar doesn't want to reveal everything before release.
04:12And honestly, I don't want them to either.
04:14Part of the excitement of playing a new Grand Theft Auto is discovering things for yourself.
04:19But there's a difference between spoiling the game and showing people how the game plays.
04:25Rockstar could give us 10 or 15 minutes of gameplay without revealing major story surprises.
04:30Show us the driving.
04:31Show us the combat.
04:33Show us the exploration.
04:35Show us NPC interactions.
04:37Show us some random activities.
04:39Show us what happens when you simply walk around Vice City and start causing trouble.
04:43That's the kind of gameplay I want.
04:46I'm going to be honest here.
04:47When a game company is extremely reluctant to show gameplay, I start wondering why.
04:52That doesn't mean I think GTA 6 is secretly bad.
04:56I don't.
04:57We simply don't have enough information to make that judgment.
05:00And Rockstar has an incredible track record.
05:03But the gaming industry has taught consumers to be skeptical.
05:06We've seen companies show carefully selected footage.
05:09We've seen games market around features that didn't make it into the final product.
05:14We've seen publishers avoid showing certain aspects of games until release.
05:18Sometimes there's a perfectly innocent reason.
05:21The game isn't finished.
05:22The developers are saving surprises.
05:24The marketing strategy is built around mystery.
05:27All of those are possible, but sometimes companies don't show something because they're not ready for consumers to see it.
05:34And that's why I think Rockstar needs to give us more.
05:37Not because I think they're hiding something terrible, but because they've created an enormous amount of anticipation around the game.
05:44At some point, trust us isn't enough.
05:47Show us.
05:49And that's why this upcoming Netflix presentation is so important.
05:53Grand Theft Auto 6, an extended look, is scheduled to appear on Netflix on August 27th.
05:59And according to the report, Netflix will have the presentation exclusively for six hours before it becomes available elsewhere, including
06:06YouTube.
06:07That's fine.
06:08But here's what I want from Rockstar.
06:10Make it worth watching.
06:12If you're going to call this an extended look, give us an extended look.
06:16Don't give us another short cinematic trailer.
06:18Don't give us a few seconds of gameplay surrounded by marketing material.
06:22Don't spend the entire presentation telling us things we already know.
06:26Show us the game.
06:28Give us substantial gameplay.
06:30Let us see how the world works.
06:32Let us see the mechanics.
06:34Let us see the things that makes GTA 6 different from its predecessors.
06:37Because if people wait for the official presentation, only to get another short trailer, while the leaks have already shown
06:44them significantly more actual gameplay, that's going to be a problem.
06:49Now I want to make something very clear.
06:52I'm not saying Rockstar should be forced to reveal more because someone leaked their game.
06:56That's not how this should work.
06:58The people responsible for the leaks don't get to dictate Rockstar's marketing schedule.
07:03Rockstar shouldn't have to spoil story details because somebody stole or distributed footage.
07:08I don't think anybody should be cheering for developers to lose control of their work.
07:13But Rockstar can respond by showing consumers why the official version is worth paying attention to.
07:19Because right now, there's a strange situation happening.
07:22The official marketing is extremely controlled.
07:25The leaks are showing raw gameplay, and that creates a contrast.
07:29And ultimately, that's what this comes down to for me.
07:32I'm not rooting for the leaker.
07:34I'm not rooting for Rockstar to have its game spoiled.
07:37I'm not rooting for Take-Two to have to spend time and money tracking down whoever is responsible.
07:42But I am rooting for consumers to know what they're buying.
07:46GTA 6 is one of the most anticipated games ever made.
07:49People have been waiting years for this.
07:51They're going to spend their money on it.
07:53And I don't think it's unreasonable to ask Rockstar to show us what we're actually getting.
07:57Again, I'm not asking for the entire game.
08:00I'm not asking for story spoilers.
08:03I'm not asking them to reveal every surprise.
08:06Just give us enough gameplay to demonstrate what Rockstar has built.
08:10The GTA 6 leaks are clearly a massive headache for Rockstar and Take-Two.
08:15Nine gameplay videos in one week is something no publisher wants.
08:19And with Take-Two pursuing subpoenas involving Microsoft, Discord, and X,
08:23the company is clearly trying to figure out who's responsible.
08:26As for the leaker's motivation, maybe it's money, maybe it's ideology, maybe it's attention,
08:33maybe it's something else entirely.
08:35And if the claim that the cryptocurrency was destroyed to prove this isn't about money is true,
08:40then that's certainly an interesting development.
08:42But honestly, that's not even the most important part of the story to me.
08:46The most important part is that we're getting gameplay from leaks that Rockstar hasn't officially shown us.
08:51And that's why August 27 matters.
08:54Rockstar has an opportunity to take control of the conversation.
08:57Give us something substantial.
08:59Show us the gameplay.
09:01Show us what makes GTA 6 special.
09:03Because if this extended look turns out to be another short trailer with a few seconds of gameplay,
09:08after everything we've seen this week,
09:11that's going to feel like another slap in the face to consumers.
09:14Rockstar doesn't have to reveal everything.
09:16But after waiting this long, it's time to show us the game.
