for smart ideas and practical solutions to make the most of your space.

Located in Tokyo’s leafy Ogikubo neighbourhood, this 40sqm/431sqft space within a multi-generational family home has been reimagined as a bright, open retreat for a daughter returning to live alongside her ageing parents. Originally divided into two rooms, architect Shinji Sonoda removed the wall between them to create a single, flexible living space organised around the rhythms of everyday life, from working and exercising to dining, relaxing, and pursuing hobbies. Wire-suspended shelving, storage, and partitions are used throughout the interior, creating a sense of lightness while allowing the space to adapt over time. With windows on three sides overlooking a Japanese garden and custom shoji screens to filter natural light, the home is designed to capture changing light throughout the day.
