00:00This German Shepherd waited outside of a Walmart for his family to come back.
00:04They left him there with a box full of his favorite toys, but no one would ever actually come back.
00:10That's when local pet photographer Liana steps in, and we caught up with her to hear what it was like
00:15meeting Maverick at that moment.
00:16It just crushed my heart because once I saw how friendly he was towards strangers and just the look in
00:24his eyes, I just knew I had to save him.
00:27Oh, hi.
00:32Okay, so I just got to the shelter.
00:34By the time Maverick made it to the shelter, he had completely shut down.
00:39And look, we don't really know why his family couldn't keep him, but whatever happened, it's really not hard to
00:46imagine what it would feel like for a dog to lose everything familiar.
00:50My German Shepherd was also abandoned, and so I think it just really hit home because I know how scared
00:58my dog was, and I just knew that Maverick felt the same way, and all he needed was one person
01:04to give him a chance.
01:05Liana couldn't really take on another animal herself, but she did the next best thing, which is use her platform
01:13hoping that she could find someone who could.
01:15We desperately need a foster because I don't know how long they're going to give him here, so stay tuned.
01:22When he was redlisted at the shelter, I knew that it was just fear. I knew that this dog wasn't
01:28aggressive. I just kept posting him. I wanted to know that I gave it my all, that I did everything
01:33in my power to save this dog.
01:35Then, someone hundreds of miles away in Washington State said yes. The only problem? Maverick was still in California.
01:45That's when I started getting really desperate and asking everybody in the transport community, hey, can you help me get
01:52this dog to Washington? It'll literally save his life.
01:55Finally, I was able to find someone, and I just knew that he was going to be safe.
02:01I'm on my way to Petsmart to get Maverick a collar with a name tag and tracker, and I'm so
02:07excited.
02:08Proof that rescue takes a village. Strangers stepped up one after the other until there was finally a way to
02:16get Maverick home.
02:18And, unsurprisingly, the moment that Maverick left the shelter, it was like meeting a completely different dog.
02:25Stories like Maverick's really are a reminder that the dog that you meet in a shelter is often not the
02:30dog that you will bring home.
02:32So, sometimes they just need a safe place and a little bit of patience before their real personality starts to
02:39shine.
02:39Seeing him in Washington, he's happy. He loves his owner. It really showed that if we all come together, we
02:47can save lives, and that is magical.
02:55So, sometimes you can takeには the dog that you're living or the dog that you are living under theologist.
02:59The dog is based on the dog that you said to us.
02:59Sí, he knows that he's the dog where he's the dog.
02:59So, you see what's going to be with him.
02:59So, he can't be seen as a dog.
