The formation brings together vessels with different roles, including patrol operations in ice-covered areas, transport, rescue and logistical support.

The task group is led by the ice-class patrol ship Ivan Papanin and also includes the large landing ship Kondopoga, the rescue tug Pamir and the tanker Sergey Osipov. According to Russian media reports citing the country’s Ministry of Defense, the group is under the command of Vice Admiral Oleg Golubev, deputy commander of the Northern Fleet.

The final stage of preparations was carried out in Northern Fleet training areas, where the crews conducted joint exercises ahead of their departure for Arctic waters.
