Russia simulates defense of strategic Arctic island with Bastion systems and Northern Fleet ships

Exercise on Kotelny Island rehearsed a response to a naval landing in the New Siberian Islands, including drone defense and computer-simulated anti-ship strikes.

Russia’s Northern Fleet conducted an exercise in the Arctic in which units equipped with the Bastion coastal missile system simulated the defense of the New Siberian Islands against an attempted naval landing.

The activity took place on Kotelny Island, where Russia maintains a permanent military presence. According to the Northern Fleet, the scenario involved an opposing force attempting to land troops on the archipelago in order to seize Russian military facilities.

The exercise is notable for testing, in a single sequence, several elements required to defend an isolated Arctic position: the movement and deployment of launchers, protection against aerial threats and drones, engagement of naval targets, and ammunition resupply.

The exercise was also reported by Russian media outlets citing the Northern Fleet’s press service.
