Transcript
00:32The fifth labor of Heracles was to clean the filthy stables of Orgeus in one day.
00:38The stables belonged to King Orgeus of Elis, had 1,000 healthy cattle in it, which created an enormous litter
00:45of dung, and had never been cleaned in more than 30 years.
00:49And, Heracles was to clean them all in just one day.
00:54Even Orgeus himself believed this could not be done, so he promised to give him one-tenth of his cattle,
01:00if he managed to clean the stables, in one day.
01:04Eurystheus had grown increasingly irritated by the hero's success, time after time, so he sought to humiliate him this time.
01:12And what better humiliation than to clean the disgusting, dung-covered stables of Orgeus, worse still, in one day?
01:19It was clear to him that Heracles possessed godly strength, which was the more reason he saw this task fitting,
01:26as his strength would do little or nothing, in helping him clear millions of heaps of dung, and dirt, within
01:32a day.
01:32But again, Heracles was out to surprise him.
01:37Proving he had wits, just as he had strength, the hero changed the direction of the Penaeus and Alpheus rivers,
01:43by digging trenches, that made the waters flow directly into the stables, cleaning all the waste, and getting the job
01:51done.
01:52You could imagine Eurystheus' horror, when he saw the stables had been cleaned, that same day, even before twilight.
01:59But he quickly came up with a splendid excuse.
02:03Just like the Hydra task, he again refused to acknowledge Heracles' success at this task, saying that the rivers, did
02:10the work for him.
02:12More so, when Orgeus delivered his own end of the bargain, by giving one-tenth of his cattle to Heracles,
02:19Eurystheus used that as an additional excuse, not to count the fulfilled task.
02:24Thus, the cleaning of the Orgean stables, would not be counted, among the supposed ten labors.
02:31Again, Heracles would have to fulfill an extra task, to make up for it.
02:35So he had seven more labors to perform.
02:47See you next week.
