00:09Hate me, you man. Stop me, you cannot. For I am in your nature, I am in your blood. I
00:20am war. I feed the fields with blood splatter. I cover waters in war spilled blood.
00:30I am the sound of prisoners wailing. The fires loot from burning cities. The gore, the kills, the spoils from
00:40every land. I am the master of arms. I am rebelliousness. I am the darkness in all of you. I
00:51am the god of war.
00:56Ares is one of the twelve Greek Olympians and the god of war, the spirit of battle, the personification of
01:03violence and bloodlust. He was called the bane of mortals, the slayer of men, the city stormer, the armor clattering.
01:12Known by the Romans with the name Mars, he represented sheer brutality, the violent and untamed aspect of brutal warfare
01:22and slaughter.
01:23Making him a total opposite of the wisdom and war goddess, Athena, who represented the civilized form of war and
01:30military strategy.
01:32Ares, Ares, was the oldest child of Zeus and Hera, and brother to Illithiah, the goddess of childbirth, Hebe, the
01:39goddess of eternal youth, and Hephaestus, the god of fire and the forge.
01:44Ares is usually depicted, wearing a helmet, a shield, and a bloodstained sword or spear.
01:52He drives a four horse chariot, and is followed by dogs or vultures.
01:57He is sometimes, shown alongside his sons, Deimos and Phobos.
02:02On the battlefield, Ares is often accompanied, by a number of bloodthirsty deities, each symbolizing the terror of war.
02:11His two sons, Deimos and Phobos, represented panic and fear.
02:16His comrade, or sister, Eris, represented strife.
02:21Caduimos, represented confusion.
02:24And the lesser deity, Enyo, was the sacker of cities and sister of war.
02:28In addition, the Cares, who were horrid, grim-eyed female spirits, of death, and who dressed in cloaks, drenched in
02:37human blood.
02:39Also hovered, alongside Ares, and his companions, during battle.
02:44Now, although Ares, was an overwhelming force, whose mere sight, filled mortals with terror.
02:51He was not as mighty, and undefeatable, as he appeared to be.
02:55There were a number of encounters, where the war god's skills, were beaten.
03:00In his battle with Diomedes, Diomedes wounded, and defeated the war god, fair and square.
03:08During the Trojan war, Athena, easily bested him, after which she mocked him, and bragged of her superiority, as a
03:16warrior.
03:17Heracles, also defeated Ares, twice.
03:20First, during the battle of Pylos, and then, after killing Ares' son, Keknes.
03:27In addition, Homer tells us, that the twin brothers, Otus, and Dephealtus, once abducted the war god.
03:35And locked him up, in a bronze jar, for thirteen months, with not the slightest means of escape.
03:42Perhaps, if their stepmother, Erebboia, hadn't told the messenger god, Hermes, about the incident.
03:49Ares would have spent eternity, in that bronze jar.
03:53Since he was the savage, and brutal god, of senseless war.
03:57Ares was neither loved by gods, nor by men.
04:01Except Aphrodite, goddess of beauty.
04:04Whom he had, an adulterous affair with.
04:07He was repulsive to his own father, Zeus.
04:10To the extent that, after he was wounded in battle, by Diomedes.
04:14Zeus called him, the most hateful of all the gods.
04:18Adding that, if Ares hadn't been his son.
04:21He would have surely thrown him, into Tartarus.
04:24With Cronus, and the rest of the titans.
04:27The war god, had perhaps, a lot of consorts.
04:31With the most popular being the goddess, Aphrodite.
04:34Who was at that time, married to his brother, Hephaestus.
04:39Aphrodite bore him, Dinos, Phobos, and Harmonia.
04:43And the four Orots.
04:45Ares also fathered a whole race, of female warriors.
04:50Known as the Amazons.
04:52His consort, Otrira.
04:54Bore him the most famous four Amazons.
04:57Who were by names, Hippolyta.
04:59Antiope.
