00:00Yesterday, Fernando Mendoza, he got a little playing time.
00:03He threw a pick six.
00:05But it does appear that Clint Kubiak is not ready to wave the white flag on him possibly starting.
00:14At least it's the way he's making it sound.
00:16But this was adorable Fernando Mendoza yesterday doing his interview with Monday Night Football.
00:21And please tell Mr. Buck I say hello.
00:23Oh, we love it.
00:24There you go.
00:25What about Mr. Aikman?
00:27Oh, of course.
00:27I mean, he's a legend, you know.
00:29I think Mr. Buck needs some more love because, I mean, Mr. Aikman's already, you know.
00:32Well said, Fernando.
00:33You nailed it.
00:35God bless.
00:35Back to you guys.
00:36See, there it is.
00:37Back to Mr. Buck.
00:38That's the stuff.
00:39I mean, he is unique.
00:43And, yeah, I'll take that.
00:45We'll take the love from Fernando Mendoza.
00:47And he says all the right things.
00:49Sometimes it's very vanilla.
00:51But, boy, does he think he represents himself really, really well.
00:56What a refreshing personality he is.
01:02It, like, I don't know why people get so shocked and surprised at somebody that's just being who they are.
01:14Like, if you go at any point during his college career, he's been the same dude.
01:21It's not a Fernando problem.
01:24It's a us problem if we look at this and go, oh, my goodness, he's so genuine and he's this.
01:30He's being him.
01:31People are suspicious of the nice.
01:34Of course.
01:35Of course.
01:36But here's –
01:37And also, who wants to say hi to Joe Buck instead of Troy Aikman?
01:40It's Troy Aikman.
01:42I would also say that I would stick to my guns with him.
01:50Big picture.
01:51Right?
01:52For all the people that think that, oh, he looks good enough to play, just throw him out there.
02:00Well, the coaches know.
02:03And there's no rush.
02:05Where are you going now?
02:06Now, the only thing that could happen by playing a quarterback too soon is that his head gets scrambled and
02:13now you're playing catch up because he hasn't gotten to a certain point yet.
02:18Right?
02:19Like, people think it was great to see Shador play last year.
02:24But without him being able to read defenses and him just running around, how was that better for the Browns
02:30organization?
02:31It wasn't.
02:33So, to sit here and think.
02:35And then when you actually think about it, some of your more consistent quarterbacks all sat for a period of
02:43time.
02:45Some do.
02:46Most number ones now are going out there and they're playing.
02:49Like, listen, Cam Ward took his lumps last year.
02:52And it was rough.
02:53It was a rough go of it for him.
02:55Right.
02:55But you also understand that I would say some quarterbacks can handle it.
03:04Cam Ward seems like he has it all together to the point where he can go through something like this
03:10and still.
03:12Right?
03:12But that's something you got to absolutely know before you go that route.
03:17I mean, he physically looks like he's going to handle it, you know, as far as, like, you know, he's
03:21a stout kid, it looks like.
03:24Listen, they all do well in the combine, right?
03:27In the train motions to show how they can drop back, how they can do these things.
03:32But mentally, you're asking a guy to take on more than he's ever taken on in his life and still
03:40be able to perform at that level.
03:42I'm not saying there's not guys that can or can't do it.
03:46What I'm saying is, is that you risk a lot more putting a guy in there too soon than too
03:54late.
03:55Right?
03:56I mean, Tom Brady sat, what, a month, a month and a half?
04:00Right?
04:02Aaron Rodgers sat for three years.
04:06So, like, we have to, but then you have, like, the Troy Aikmans of the world who, by the way,
04:12let's also understand that you cannot be an athlete or a quarterback in the NFL and have the rookie years
04:24that Troy Aikman had and that Peyton Manning had and everybody go, okay, he has to go through his lumps.
04:31That doesn't happen today.
04:33Very doubtful.
04:34Right.
04:35So, understand what you're risking.
04:38But he's, I mean, odds are he's going to probably start at some point this year.
04:42No, I, again, understood.
04:46But guess what?
04:47If you look at all the success and who's struggling in the NFL, the guys who seem to be having
04:56a longer run are the guys that sat for a period of time.
05:03Whether it's a year, a month, or whatever.
05:07I mean, the new guys who are, who are, like, dazzling right now.
05:10I mean, Caleb Williams started right away.
05:13He started right away.
05:14They had absolutely no one, though.
05:17Right?
05:17Well, yeah, and he wasn't very good.
05:19Right.
05:20He wasn't, he wasn't very good.
05:21CJ Stroud was good right out of the gate, and now he's not good.
05:24It happened in Chicago.
05:26Right?
05:26That's the other thing.
05:28When you look at, like, they probably should have been more patient with Tua.
05:32When you look at, let's see, Stroud.
05:37When you look at the quarterback and.
05:41But Stroud was good out of the bat.
05:42He was good out of the bat.
05:44That was the weird thing, is he was good his rookie season, and he seems like he's regressed.
05:49Right.
05:49When you look at, you look at Carolina, he seems to be turning it around.
05:56What did they give Drake May?
05:57They gave him, like, did he start, like, I think he probably missed, like, what, four games to start his
06:01rookie year?
06:02Yeah.
06:03He started, like, four games, and they were.
06:05And then he was in.
06:05So bad, they just threw him in.
06:07Yeah.
06:08I understand.
06:08Who wants to see Bailey's happy?
06:10You have to be honest with, the organization has to be honest with itself.
06:15Right?
06:15Like, for these people to just say on TV, ah, just throw him in there.
06:20Let him take his lumps.
06:22You, more quarterbacks get ruined that way.
06:25Well, they have probably the most steady backup for him.
06:28Because even with, like, Cam last year, I mean, they had Will Levis behind him.
06:32Right.
06:32Which he probably beat him out.
06:35Which is going to be tough to have a guy you actually beat out backing you up.
06:40Because they're going to be even more inclined to let you take your lumps.
06:45Um, but, but yeah, there's, there's, like, I, I just, I just think that we're sitting
06:53here with these rules that are just made up.
06:59That, like, okay, I have the same information as all the people that are saying, just let
07:03him take his lumps.
07:05So do they not have more proof that a more established quarterback and some of the more
07:10established quarterbacks in the league did sit for a period of time, whatever that period
07:14of time is?
07:15Do they not have that same information?
07:17I don't think it's a mix.
07:19I don't think, like, you could say it's every established quarterback.
07:22Because, like, right now, look at, I mean, Jackson, I mean, it's usually, like, a few
07:25games.
07:26It feels like it's kind of a run.
07:27But I'm not saying it has to be a year or two years.
07:30I'm not saying it's Aaron Rodgers or, uh, or the quarterback in, in, um, Green Bay.
07:36I'm not saying.
07:36I mean, that's a unique situation, right?
07:39That two or three years, usually, usually teams don't have that patience or more importantly,
07:47they don't draft the quarterback that, you know, like that.
07:50But I would say, look at Patrick Mahomes.
07:53Patrick Mahomes, like, did he sit a whole year?
07:56Or, uh, I think he got, like, a game at the end of the year.
07:59But, yeah, it was Alex Smith.
08:01Right.
08:01It was Alex Smith.
08:02But other guys, you know, were either, you know, they've, they've moved around.
08:07Bo Nix started right away.
08:08Right now.
08:09So, like, the young, I think that's, like, kind of younger crop.
08:11There's a lot of guys who did get right in there.
08:13Right.
08:14And make things happen.
08:15But I think with Fernando, you know, with Tom Brady around the organization, and he's
08:20really been pretty passionate about it, it probably leans towards he's not going to
08:23start against the Dolphins.
08:24Yeah.
08:26But I don't know.
08:27Maybe, like, Kirk Cousins are just like, hey, he's too old.
08:29Is there anybody that understands what's sitting out a few games and what they learned sitting
08:33out more than Tom Brady?
08:36No, he definitely would.
08:37He would have the input on that, for sure.
08:39Okay.
08:39And now, if you have, you know, arguably the best quarterback to ever play the game, and
08:45him not even flinching on that, you think there has to be some importance to it?
08:51Yeah, I think so.
08:52I think that's probably going to, that's going to have some say in it.
08:55I would imagine, unless he just looks better than Kirk Cousins.
08:58Even if he does, the job here is not to make sure he's ready for this season, but maybe
09:10the seven to ten seasons after.
09:13And that's how you have to look at this, right?
09:16We're not looking at this as a short-term thing.
09:20We're looking at this as a long-term thing.
09:23What happened to, in Dallas, when he came in, when Tony Romo got hurt, and then he just
09:30basically kept the job?
09:32Different situation.
09:33Different situation with Tom Brady.
09:35You got to look at it different from a guy who is a number one pick.
09:39Like, a number one pick, or a guy...
09:41It doesn't change the qualifications of doing the job, though.
09:45It changes a little bit.
09:47I think it does.
09:48The idea that a guy is, you know, is going to be looked upon.
09:53First of all, it's usually that's going to be looked upon as the cream of the crop of
09:56the draft.
09:57So he should be more ready, theoretically, than a third-rounder.
10:00So I do think that changes something.
10:01Well, than a third-rounder, yes.
10:02But there's still some development that has to happen.
10:08There are certain things that are just a little bit different in how you have to do
10:13things, right?
10:15And so they have a veteran quarterback in there that can assist with that, where he can watch
10:22and learn how to be a professional.
10:24Like, again, I'm not saying that this is a long-term thing, right?
10:30But I am saying that most quarterbacks benefit from being able to see how it's done first
10:40and being able to learn that way versus just throwing them in there.
10:45Like, everybody mentally can't handle failure.
10:49That's true.
10:50And so without even knowing, you throw a guy in there, and then he's had more failure in
10:57his first, you know, three games than he's had in his whole career.
11:01Well, he seems like a guy that, I mean, going from a no-recruit guy to transferring colleges.
11:05Like, I could see him having the makeup to do that.
11:07Yeah, like, again, I could see it, too.
11:11Josh says, does Mendoza have a heel version of him?
11:13No.
11:14He said the Vegas Strip is a haunted house.
11:16He's treating it like the haunted house in the neighborhood.
11:19I don't think there is a heel version.
11:20I think he has his milk and cookies to go to bed and has protein shakes for breakfast.
11:24I think he's a ghost.
11:24I think he's a ghost.
