00:05He's the king of action movies.
00:08He's high-kicking all over the world.
00:11And he's easily one of the most recognizable screen stars on the planet.
00:17He is the one and only Jackie Chan.
00:20And right now, we've got him.
00:22You're gonna see Hong Kong like you've never seen it before.
00:25Through Jackie's eyes.
00:27He's come on home to give us the inside dirt on what makes his birthplace
00:31one of the hottest destinations in Asia for everyone.
00:35So don't even move, because you don't want to make Mr. Jackie Chan mad.
00:40Welcome to Hong Kong. City of life.
00:43One, two, three.
00:44Ha!
00:55That's the best buyer.
00:57Oh!
01:10Hong Kong. Welcome.
01:26Hong Kong.
01:27The birthplace of the hugely celebrated megastar Jackie Chan.
01:31It's the gateway to Asia.
01:33Sure, Hollywood USA is his new hometown.
01:36But Hong Kong will always be Jackie's true love.
01:40This is the town that swept him to fame and fortune.
01:43Taught him his skills, but kept him grounded.
01:46I grew up in Hong Kong. Definitely, yes.
01:49Hong Kong side, right top of the mountain.
01:53That's my home.
01:57He's kept close ties with the city.
01:59And right now, Jackie's here to show us everything you need to know about Hong Kong.
02:04Our movie star guide will reveal his secrets of Hong Kong.
02:08Of course, don't let the word hometown fool you.
02:11Hong Kong is fast and furious, just like Manhattan.
02:15Home to 7.2 million people and huge multinational corporations.
02:19It's not just a business center.
02:21It's also a playground for the super rich.
02:25These last 10 years, I'm tourists too.
02:27Every time I'm coming back, something new.
02:30But who says you have to be a billionaire or a movie star like Jackie to enjoy this city?
02:35From chaotic downtown to outside sleepy islands,
02:39and bargain markets to designer shops, Jackie reveals to us the metropolis locals call the city of life.
02:47That's my Hong Kong.
02:52Did you know that Hong Kong is as far south as the Bahamas and just as tropical?
02:57The city sits on the southeast coast of China,
03:00and has always been a gateway between China mainland and the Western world.
03:05Look around you. Contrasts are everywhere.
03:08Glittering skyscrapers are framed by lush mountains and white beaches.
03:15East meets west. Communism coexists with capitalism.
03:20All sandwiched between the mountains and the sea.
03:23Eleven million tourists come every year and pour a whopping seven billion dollars into the city.
03:31Even for wealthy Hong Kong folks, this means big business.
03:34No wonder the locals don't take tourists for granted in this town.
03:39Hong Kong is such a very small city.
03:42Everything is important.
03:43We have to buy from some other country.
03:45Even the water, buy from China.
03:47The food, buy from Bangkok.
03:49And the car from Japan.
03:51You know, we have nothing.
03:53So this is why tourism for us is very important.
03:58What you can take for granted is Hong Kong's size.
04:01It's such a small place, it's hard to get lost.
04:05Think you're outside America, on the other side of the world?
04:08Think again.
04:09Don't be surprised to see your favorite brands.
04:12From Starbucks to Big Macs, Coke to Holiday Inns.
04:16Not to mention the English language itself.
04:19America's everywhere, so never fear.
04:22Your grand skim latte is only a heartbeat away.
04:26Hong Kong people are so funny.
04:28If you, anything popular here, everybody come here.
04:32There's so many space.
04:34In this side, in this side.
04:35Nobody go.
04:36Everybody just start in one place.
04:38A tiny place.
04:40From fortune seekers to refugees, this place is a magnet.
04:43And this land is opportunity.
04:46A promise that follows through for many.
04:49Jackie is the classic example.
04:51His parents came here to escape Mao's China in 1952.
04:56Jackie was born in 1954 and appropriately named Chan Kong San,
05:00which means born in Hong Kong.
05:02His early years were spent at the French Embassy,
05:05where his father was a cook.
05:07Amazingly, Jackie made his first film at eight
05:09and landed his first leading kung fu role at 17.
05:12And he's been kicking you-know-what ever since.
05:16When Hollywood noticed him at 25,
05:18he was catapulted to international stardom.
05:21Today, he is Hong Kong's well-loved favorite son,
05:25their pride and joy.
05:28But Jackie's not always on a movie set.
05:31So how does he get around in a city that's divided by water?
05:35Hong Kong Island on one side and Kowloon on the other.
05:38I'll show you something special.
05:41We're going to cross the harbour.
05:44We take the Star Ferries.
05:47It's very interesting, exciting.
05:50Check out the view.
05:56Did you know that since 1934,
05:59the Star Ferries have been shuttling people across the harbour
06:02every eight minutes, 18 hours a day,
06:06for only 50 cents a ride?
06:10It's such a good time.
06:12Some people do it again and again and again.
06:21I think that's the image of Hong Kong,
06:23building on two sides of the harbour.
06:26High-kicking Jackie lives in L.A. these days.
06:29But Hong Kong is still under his skin.
06:31And even he gets a kick out of the knockout views.
06:35Every time when I introduce Hong Kong,
06:37even myself stay on the ferry.
06:40When I look at it, it's really beautiful.
06:43Yeah.
06:44Now, don't be confused.
06:46This is no ocean cruise.
06:47And it doesn't have to take up a big chunk of your day.
06:50But if you only have time for one thing in Hong Kong,
06:53it has to be the Star Ferry.
06:57Hong Kong.
07:04Moving on.
07:05Jackie really wants to see one of his all-time favourite places in Hong Kong.
07:10So we're hitching a ride with him.
07:12But he's so busy signing autographs,
07:14he's forgotten it's a business day.
07:16Monday, to be precise.
07:22Monday, today.
07:24We should do it on Sunday, yesterday.
07:29Much better.
07:32There's traffic everywhere, huh?
07:36Hong Kong is like L.A. and New York.
07:38All bumper to bumper.
07:40But nobody had better feel road rage with Jackie Chan.
07:44I love to ride.
07:46I always drive by myself, wherever I go.
07:50Come in, sorry. Sorry!
07:52That's Hong Kong.
07:56But where's Jackie taking us?
07:58To the place where he was born.
08:00Hong Kong's most popular destination, Victoria Peak.
08:04It's the city's best place for a view and not to be missed.
08:10Unlike sprawling U.S. cities like Los Angeles or Chicago,
08:14Hong Kong really is a tiny place.
08:16You can cross it in half an hour by train.
08:20At the foot of Victoria Peak, traffic's not the only problem.
08:25Giving up on his car, Jackie's chosen a quicker way to the top.
08:29This just goes to show that newer isn't always better.
08:33The peak trams have been chugging along since 1888.
08:37Jackie's taking us to the pinnacle of Victoria Peak.
08:40Or as the locals say, the peak.
08:43It's close to the French embassy where he lived until he went to a martial arts boarding school on Kowloon.
08:49The peak is one of the highest points in all of Hong Kong.
08:54The ride costs just $2 a ticket.
08:56But Jackie being Jackie, he doesn't always ride inside.
09:00Two years ago, I was doing a Hong Kong TV.
09:02I was on top of the train to film it and jump over it.
09:11As the most recognizable face in Hong Kong, Jackie's fans are everywhere.
09:17He doesn't need the film crew to get noticed.
09:19And he's just as excited as they are about the ride.
09:24We're going to the peak.
09:26The best view of Hong Kong. I show you.
09:30Jackie loves the romance of the tram.
09:33For him, it's a near vertical trip up memory lane.
09:38Every time I come back to Hong Kong, the first place I go is the peak.
09:43When you go on top of the mountain, you feel fresh.
09:48You just feel relaxed.
09:51Look at the view first.
09:53The peak is a dozen surprises all rolled into one.
09:57It's the number one attraction in this city.
10:00With scads of ways for the shops and entertainers to ease a dollar out of your pocket.
10:05From eats to oddities and plenty of neat surprises.
10:24It's also a very desirable zip code.
10:28The rent here can cost up to an unbelievable $18,000 per month.
10:34It's a really, really expensive land.
10:38Any house here, more than $3 million, $4 million.
10:41The cheapest house, apartment is $2 million.
10:44So this is why we call it $2 million view.
10:47You can see, it's so beautiful.
10:52From here to there, you can see the whole Hong Kong Kowloon.
10:56When you come here, you look at the view, you forget all the problems.
10:59Really, really relaxed.
11:08Once you've had your downtime, you can check out some of the other restaurants, shops and museums on Victoria Peak.
11:14And what could be more natural than burrowing into the side of the mountain to build a shopping mall and
11:21museums?
11:22Natural in Hong Kong, that is.
11:25There's even a Madame Tussaud's world-famous wax museum.
11:29Jackie's made the cast list.
11:31So if you didn't bring your own movie star, you can borrow Jackie for your photo opportunity.
11:36If that's not enough, play along with your very own rock and roll legends.
11:44Coming up next, hang on to your autograph books as we follow Jackie Chan movie star as he's mobbed by
11:52fans in the market and wrestles with giant lobsters.
11:59Get ready for part two.
12:05This is Jackie Chan.
12:07He was born in Hong Kong, and it's a city he loves and he wants to share with you.
12:12He's the star of Rush Hour and 60 other movies.
12:16He's Asia's number one heartthrob.
12:19And even though he lives mostly in L.A., he's come back to Hong Kong to co-star with his
12:24hometown, the place they call the City of Life.
12:29Jackie's dad was a chef and he loves his food.
12:32So now he's going to help us get the inside track on his old food stomping grounds as Hong Kong's
12:37favorite son and official tourist ambassador.
12:45Like every homecoming street-savvy Hong Kong boy, Jackie is set to get some real home cooking.
12:52If your tummy is ready to rumble like his, this is the place to sample Jackie's hometown grub.
12:59Every time I come back to Hong Kong, the first things I get to do is eat.
13:04Yeah, I miss a lot of food. I have to eat all kinds of food.
13:16In Hong Kong, it's never a long trip from the market to the table.
13:20These are the famous wet markets. Did you know the Chinese want to see their food alive and kicking before
13:27they buy it?
13:28In this market, if it doesn't wriggle or jiggle, it doesn't get sold.
13:33Chinese market, we call it wet market. Everything is fresh.
13:40Oh, look at this. Jump. Jump. One, two, three. Jump.
13:49That's all good. All fresh. Look at that.
13:56That's the best buyer. Look at this. That's a fresh.
14:06Now that he's trained the shrimps for the high jump, he's going to keep you one jump
14:11ahead.
14:11And there's always another market just down the road.
14:15This area, you have a wet market and dry market, maybe 15 minutes later, that's another one.
14:40Long ago, before refrigeration, the Chinese learned how to preserve food by drying.
14:49Our ever-hungry hero wants you to forget your waistline and try some real Hong Kong food.
14:56You can have a breakfast, you can have a dinner any time, lunch every day, any time, open 24
15:01hours.
15:02When I'm in London, when I'm in America, they're talking about Chinese food.
15:06Yes, they do make Chinese food, but I think becoming American Chinese food is not exactly
15:13Chinese food.
15:15The real deal is Cantonese cooking.
15:18This is local style, and for them and some critics, one of the very best of China's five regional
15:25cuisines.
15:26Of course, they could be biased.
15:29Forget the MSG and the fat-laden cooking you're used to at home.
15:32Here, it's the original fast food, and the emphasis is on fresh.
15:38If you want to blast your taste buds with strong flavors, then try another type, because Cantonese
15:44grub is subtle stuff that gourmets everywhere adore.
15:49To find the best restaurants, simply look for the crowds.
15:54Remember, most folks speak some English, and they do want to help you empty your wallets.
16:00No matter where you go to dine in Hong Kong, table manners are the same, yet they can also
16:06be very different from at home.
16:08Here, you have to get used to sharing.
16:11Eating out family style is the only way to go.
16:13Eating here is fun, and chit-chat at the table is all part of Hong Kong dining.
16:20When the bill comes, whatever you do, don't try to split the check with your friends in
16:25Hong Kong.
16:26The maitre d' won't appreciate it, and he may even throw you out.
16:31After dinner, it's time for Hong Kong nightlife.
16:38I really can say it's full of action, and a lot of life.
16:44It seems that the people never sleep 24 hours.
16:49Even in some other place, like America, even in Taiwan, when after 2 o'clock or 3 o'clock,
16:55you go to the restaurant, they close.
16:57No, in Hong Kong, anytime.
17:01This is a 24-7 town, and as some people are going to sleep, armies of other people are
17:07just waking up.
17:08So pick up the pace, and head for the nightlife zones, where you can party till dawn.
17:16And don't just take our word for it.
17:19It's fantastic because it combines so many things.
17:21I mean, you have the bright lights and excitement of New York City.
17:25You have the party atmosphere of New Orleans.
17:27You have the glitz and glam of Miami.
17:30It has everything of all the different cities combined into one place.
17:38But hang on to your wallet.
17:40Dancing till dawn can be pricey, with beer nearly $10 a hit.
17:47After you've had your fill of partying, grab the perfect late-night munchie.
17:51Fill up on one of Jackie's favorites, Hong Kong's version of the renowned egg roll.
17:58Try that.
18:00Good.
18:01Very favorite.
18:03Bye-bye.
18:05Coming up next, Jackie Chan takes us back to the Hollywood of his childhood.
18:11And it's not quite what you expect.
18:14He's gonna make sure you don't max out your credit cards.
18:17Because Jackie Chan is taking us shopping.
18:22Action star Jackie Chan is Hong Kong's favorite export.
18:26And he's taking a break from breaking box office records,
18:29to come home to the city he loves, and to show us the best.
18:33He's worked his way up from the bottom and made it.
18:36And he's going to give you the benefit of his experience.
18:40But after all, Jackie was brought up far from wealthy.
18:43But he's high-kicked his way to success.
18:46He knows the value of a dollar.
18:48So right now, Jackie's gonna share his inside information with hot tips from his own backyard.
18:55That's my Hong Kong.
19:00As they say in America, when the going gets tough, the tough goes shopping.
19:05And you'll need to be tough if you want to make it into even half of the shops and markets
19:09in Jackie's Hong Kong.
19:12Here you can buy anything and everything.
19:15The challenge is trying not to max out your credit cards.
19:18And getting a good deal while you're at it.
19:20So what does Jackie recommend you buy in a city where everything is for sale, tax-free?
19:26The answer is one of Jackie's personal passions, antiques.
19:31I love antiques. Hong Kong is one of the best places to buy.
19:34Why? Because we're so close to China.
19:38With thousands of years of history, China is a vast reservoir of treasures.
19:43And here, antique can mean seriously old.
19:47China was blocked off from the rest of the world for centuries.
19:50And even now, Hong Kong is the only place in the world where you can legally buy Chinese antiquities at
19:57their source.
19:58And on Hong Kong Island, there are two places to go prospecting for antiques.
20:03The first is upscale Hollywood Road, a kind of rodeo drive for old treasures.
20:09And just two blocks down, there's the strangely named Cat Street, where you can shop for just a few dollars.
20:16How about 25? 25 U.S.?
20:19Sorry.
20:20No?
20:21Okay.
20:24Some of the garage sale odds and ends in Cat Street aren't really old.
20:28But dig down a little and there are some truly old prizes.
20:33There are deals to be had if you don't forget to haggle.
20:36It's part of the fun.
20:37But just what does a Hollywood movie star collect when money is no object?
20:42Believe it or not, Jackie's choice is antique locks.
20:46Collect a lot of locks.
20:49Chinese old locks.
20:50I collect funny things, yeah.
20:53In fact, while their wives had a rest from shopping, these guys found some of Jackie's favorites, old Chinese combination
21:01locks.
21:02It's tricky when you don't speak the language and are haggling using foreign money.
21:07How does it work?
21:08Can you open it?
21:09Uh, yeah.
21:11Bingo!
21:12Look how simple that is.
21:14Now that he's found his collector's piece, let's see how the bargaining comes along.
21:1960?
21:2180, okay.
21:22No.
21:2260, no money.
21:2480?
21:2565.
21:26Good price.
21:2770, okay.
21:28Good price.
21:2970 dollars.
21:31Okay, thank you.
21:31The final bill?
21:33Less than 10 US dollars.
21:35Bye-bye.
21:35Not bad for first-time hagglers.
21:37Now that you're a black belt in bargaining, you can step up to the big leagues and head
21:42two blocks uphill to Hollywood Road.
21:45Here there are 250 shops, jumbled together and all selling Chinese antiques.
21:52Hollywood Road prices aren't good for your blood pressure.
21:55Sure, they can start from 50 dollars, but they can also skyrocket up to a million.
22:01That's a lot of money.
22:03But why would anybody pay so much?
22:05Well, the answer is in the US, it's considered cheap.
22:09Now a million may not seem cheap, but this stuff costs up to four times less than in the
22:15good old USA.
22:15The sales tax alone could make your hair curl, but here, it's also tax-free.
22:23Jackie's got his plastic out, and it's time to go shopping.
22:27You go into the antique shop, even if you're not going to buy it, you learn a lot of things.
22:32Here, Hollywood California veteran Jackie meets Victor, a veteran of Hollywood Road, Hong Kong.
22:39Hi, Victor.
22:40Hi.
22:45Amazingly, many of these antiques were made before the time of Christ.
22:50When I pick up the stone, what's that?
22:52Oh, that's 2,000 years old.
22:542,000 years old?
22:55How do you know?
22:56That's 3,000 years old.
22:58That makes you, I'm only what?
23:00I'm only 40-something.
23:01Wow, 2,000 years old.
23:04You just, you just cannot imagine why these kind of things still survive away.
23:23Hoses brings people good luck.
23:27I hope it brings the peace.
23:31Yeah.
23:40Everything on this table is under $200.
23:43But even though they are old, they're not so rare.
23:47But this 600-year-old horse is.
23:50And it recently sold for $35,000 here on Hollywood Road.
23:56For the buyer, that could be an instant profit of $100,000 back in the USA.
24:04No matter how much you decide to spend, make sure you get the real McCoy and not a high-class
24:09copy.
24:10Buying an expensive fake could really spoil your vacation.
24:14Because when you buy pieces, it is authentic.
24:17Your investment is well protected.
24:20If you buy pieces, it's a reproduction.
24:23So the money is just gone.
24:26If you see this sign, you probably won't get ripped off.
24:30Hong Kong Tourist Association, we have like a guarantee.
24:33The shop, they're not cheating you.
24:34You have to go there.
24:36Some other shop, you cannot tell.
24:40If old stuff isn't your bag, but bargains are, then why not check one of the other bustling day markets
24:46dotted throughout Hong Kong?
24:49The most famous of these is Stanley Market on the south side of Hong Kong.
24:54It's a honey trap for tourists, so don't forget to haggle.
24:59Stanley is a village, but it's a village dedicated to shopping.
25:05This is Ina from Texas, and this lady has a nose for a bargain.
25:10I've been here one week, and I come every day.
25:13And I find something different every day.
25:17The silver is a good buy.
25:19The linens are an excellent buy.
25:21And I've bought several different things that I cannot find in the States at the good prices that Hong Kong
25:26has.
25:27My husband says my bags are getting too full.
25:33But I still have a little space.
25:37If you've still got the shopping bug, then head for a night market.
25:42From 8 till the wee hours.
25:44And yes, we're talking 4 a.m.
25:46You can spend, spend, spend.
25:49This family are sampling the goods here at Kowloon's well-known Temple Street night market.
25:54I bought this purse.
25:56This one was seven American dollars.
25:59Seven dollars, yeah.
26:00Seven American dollars.
26:01Probably could have got it for five.
26:02But that was kind of why I didn't bargain.
26:05In a catalog, a cashmere sweater is about $250.
26:09And you can get them here for about $35.
26:13So it's a wonderful place to shop.
26:17Once you've filled your bags with designer wear, make some more space.
26:22But this time, for yourself.
26:25Did you know that the world's greatest place to tantalize your feet is in Hong Kong?
26:31If you're in the mood for a little movie star style pampering, this massage is for you.
26:37Two thousand years of Chinese medicine will be placed at your feet, literally.
26:44Here in Hong Kong, they are the masters of the ancient art of reflexology.
26:48That's foot massage to you and me.
26:51And visitors come from all over the world to sample its healing powers.
26:56So if your little piggies have been to the market, then get them out and get ready for a foot
27:01massage.
27:03It's health-giving.
27:05And for those lucky enough to experience it, it's just like going to the gym.
27:10Just one problem.
27:12It won't take an inch off your hips.
27:15At just $25 for a 45-minute foot massage, this is one treatment that will leave you walking on air.
27:25Coming up next, better save your seats as our martial arts movie star takes us on a crash course.
27:31into the real Hong Kong.
27:33So don't move a muscle unless you want Jackie Chan to whip your...
27:39That's my Hong Kong.
27:45Born in Hong Kong, Jackie Chan, star of more than 60 action movies, is showing us the real Hong Kong.
27:52Jackie loves this town and wants to share it with all of you.
27:56It's a place where the cultures of the East and West collide head-on.
28:00But if you don't want to be roadkill, stay with us as Jackie guides you through his Hong Kong.
28:08To many it's like a New Orleans of the East, but this Oriental Big Easy is a place of surprises.
28:15Give it a few hours to move to its own eastern beat, and you'll feel like it's a home away
28:21from home.
28:22It's uncanny when you see how soon you'll fit right in.
28:26Hong Kong is a multi-culture city.
28:28So this is why, I think this is why the tourists, when they come to Hong Kong, it's like,
28:33OK, no matter if you're Canadian, Indian, German, French, whatever you come, you feel like you're home.
28:42In Hong Kong, it's easy to forget that you're in a part of China where they've been doing things differently
28:48for thousands of years.
28:50Glance around you, and take a peek at this strange old world.
29:05The Hong Kong Chinese can be particularly superstitious.
29:08To them, everything has a symbolic meaning, especially numbers and colours.
29:15Red is very, very important for Chinese people.
29:19When you see red, there are always happy things going on.
29:21When you see white, it's bad things.
29:25Colours symbolise different things here than you might think.
29:29For us, white is a wedding colour.
29:32For the Chinese, white is for funerals, not celebrations.
29:36When you go to some other people's house, you see some white things around,
29:41then you know something happened.
29:43Maybe the fathers died.
29:45But you see some red lantern.
29:48That means maybe they're getting married.
29:52You needn't be shy about dropping in at one of the 600-odd temples in Hong Kong.
29:57Here, they don't call the shrink for the answer to a problem.
30:00They go person to person.
30:03I do something wrong.
30:04You know, people cannot tell the parents.
30:06You cannot tell the children.
30:08You cannot tell the friends.
30:08The only way you can, you tell the God.
30:23This is the Manmo Temple.
30:25Set up by a pirate who saw the error of his ways and plea bargained with the gods.
30:32His repentance didn't last long, though.
30:34Later in life, he went into politics.
30:38By burning incense and offerings, Jackie can ask for yet another box office smash.
30:45The principles of Buddhism are important to the Hong Kong Chinese.
30:51Tell the Buddha, I want to have a son.
30:54Next year, you have a son.
30:55Wow, I really, the Buddha helped me.
30:57They're going back to have to thank you, the Buddha.
31:00These kind of things.
31:06This is the great Buddha on Lantau Island, just minutes by ferry from the center of the city.
31:13Buddhist influence is everywhere, as is respect for all kinds of beliefs.
31:18Tell some people around the world you are a vegetarian, and they'll look at you funny.
31:23But here, they'll respect your point of view.
31:27From mountaintops to street level, Hong Kong can spring surprises.
31:32Look out for shopkeepers making roadside offerings to the spirit world to bring good business.
31:38Almost every shop has a shrine in Hong Kong.
31:42For those too impatient to wait for the favor of the gods, there's a shortcut to hidden knowledge.
31:48The fortune teller.
31:50In Hong Kong, there's no shortage of wise men and women to massage your hopes and fears in return for
31:57a few dollars.
31:58If you don't take it seriously, it can be seriously fun.
32:03And this is Fortune Alley, one of many places where the future can be revealed in mysterious Hong Kong.
32:13Chinese fortune tellers read more than just your palms.
32:16They look at everything, from your hands to your face, and from your bank balance to your phone bill.
32:22They claim to diagnose the future, rather than see it.
32:27From this age-old diagram recently bought from the supermarket, they'll tell you all kinds of intimate details about your
32:34love life or about your business.
32:36And watch out, even your monkey business.
32:41Jackie doesn't like to have his fortune told.
32:44I don't like people to say, Jackie, you be careful this year. You see blood. These kind of things make
32:54me nervous.
32:57But other elements of Hong Kong Chinese culture can be just as much fun to see and find out about.
33:03Much of the city is designed under the ancient principles of feng shui.
33:09It's become popular in the United States in the past few years.
33:13Simply understood, feng shui is about balance from where to place a chair to the number of fish in your
33:21fish tank.
33:22For the Hong Kong Chinese, it's almost as important as life itself.
33:27Feng shui masters are brought in to consult on every major decision.
33:32Would you believe that no important Hong Kong building can be built without a feng shui master's say-so?
33:38That's feng shui. One thing's for sure, it's no fad here.
33:43Mostly Hong Kong people just believe feng shui and makes them stay peaceful.
33:51And I think it's good.
33:54This hotel and condo complex might look like it's from Miami.
33:58But see that hole in the middle? It's not just for looks.
34:01It was designed for the dragon spirit of the mountain to have access to the sea.
34:06If you keep your eyes open, you'll see signs of feng shui everywhere.
34:11Look out for the fish tanks, which are said to provide a feeling of tranquility.
34:16There are even rules for the number and color of fish to make it the most lucky.
34:21I think feng shui actually depends where you stay, which place is comfortable.
34:26For me, that's feng shui.
34:29Older folks still follow the old ways.
34:32But even here in China, no one is immune from the culture of the boombox and the lure of the
34:37TV.
34:37Most people, they still believe these kind of things.
34:41But the young generation, they believe hip hop.
34:46Life has changed.
34:50But few rap stars have ever paid dues like Jackie Chan.
34:54Hollywood has made him the world's biggest action star.
34:57But his steely stare and iron muscles were made by ancient martial arts.
35:05I think when I was six and a half, when I moved to, from Hong Kong, moved to Kowloon.
35:11Because we stay in my, the martial arts school is kind of like a boarding school.
35:18At this school, Jackie learned his craft as a performer under the strict eyes of the master
35:23and became one of the seven little fortunes.
35:26But the basis of his acting skill was his martial arts training.
35:31So many martial artists in Hong Kong.
35:34I learned from Hong Kong because there are so many masters that come to Hong Kong to teach.
35:40He left his school at 17, and it wasn't long before his daredevilry got him a job as a stuntman.
35:46Movie mogul Charles Wang has known Jackie since those early days.
35:50I thought, oh, he's just doing all those dangerous, crazy stuns.
35:55He did it, not the stunt double, he did it by himself.
35:58That's why I say he has something different than anybody else.
36:04Stunt crazy Jackie Chan is a hero to wannabe martial artists from all over the globe.
36:11This guy's a kung fu master and Hong Kong movie stuntman.
36:15And when Jackie comes on the set, he gets 100% respect.
36:21When he arrives at the set, he summons all the kung fu experts to have a meeting.
36:26If we want to do something dramatic like falling through a table, he'll provide us all with ideas on how
36:32to do it.
36:34The young Jackie was not fond of schooling, but kung fu turned him from a handful in the classroom to
36:40a riot at the box office.
36:42Martial arts epitomize Hong Kong. Sure, it's a fighting art, but it was first conceived as a harmonious way of
36:48living.
36:50Right now, kind of like the center of martial art. We have everything here.
36:56Getting down and dirty at a kung fu center is something everyone can try.
37:01But what gave Jackie a launching pad to success to fame and fortune was the Hong Kong movie biz, second
37:08in size only to Hollywood itself.
37:10And I think it is a very, very wonderful location.
37:14You still have a contrast, the old and the new, and the west and the east.
37:20So it is a good place to film in.
37:38Even movie stars need downtime.
37:40And if, like Jackie Chan, you need a break from the action superheroing, put down your popcorn and try a
37:47little Tai Chi on the waterfront.
37:49Tai Chi is an ancient martial art with all the aggression taken out.
38:01Coming up next, stay glued to your sofa and check out Hong Kong with action star Jackie Chan.
38:08He'll whisk us away to a secret island far from the urban madness of Hong Kong.
38:13Just stay with us if you want to find out what a designated driver looks like in paradise.
38:20That's paradise.
38:24High kicking movie star Jackie Chan is giving us a personal tour of the place he loves best, his hometown
38:31Hong Kong.
38:33Now he's been here, he's been there.
38:35But the lure of Hong Kong makes our heroes so fond of the place they call the Manhattan of the
38:40East.
38:42Hong Kong.
38:45Hong Kong is exciting, fast and glittery.
38:48There's more Rolls Royces per capita than any other place on earth.
38:53It's all action, all the time.
38:55And it's great fun.
38:56But sometimes the noise, the people, the cars, can be a bit much.
39:03Oh, see?
39:05That's Hong Kong.
39:06The sound, the noise everywhere.
39:08That's the noise everywhere.
39:10You can...
39:10The difficult way we're filming in Hong Kong is quiet.
39:13Nobody quiet because so tiny place, you know, the sounds everywhere.
39:18So what do you do when you want a little peace and quiet?
39:21What do you do if the kids are antsy?
39:23Why not ask our favorite movie star?
39:26Changjiao, which is 20 minutes by boat.
39:29Beautiful.
39:30And we go to the island and have a dinner.
39:34Wow, that's the best seafood.
39:38Now it's time to recharge your batteries.
39:42Changjiao is a tiny picturesque island.
39:44It's name means Long Island.
39:46And it's just that.
39:48A thin strip of land just a couple of hundred yards across.
39:52It's just a short cruise from Hong Kong.
39:54And boats leave from the central ferry terminal every half an hour.
39:58At $2.50, it's another cheap day out.
40:05There are no cars anywhere on Changjiao.
40:08And while the ferry terminal still feels crowded,
40:10five minutes on foot,
40:12and you'll feel like you've got the whole island to yourself.
40:16Life here is as it's always been,
40:19although most of the time the weather is better.
40:22Local people get to their homes around Changjiao and neighboring islands
40:26on sampans,
40:27the traditional form of water transportation in Hong Kong.
40:33But getting around on land is even more fun.
40:36Taxis here are quite an experience.
40:41This couple is taking Jackie's advice.
40:44They're here to see relatives and friends.
40:46And they're on their way for one of Changjiao's famous seafood meals.
40:54In Hong Kong, Chinese always eat fresh.
40:58Fresh chicken, fresh fish, everything fresh.
41:02You choose the fish, then they cook it for you.
41:08Locals here don't order their food from a menu.
41:10They want to see it swimming around right up until it goes in the pan.
41:15Another approach is simply to choose it off the plate.
41:34Table manners with chopsticks can be tricky.
41:37But don't worry.
41:39Even experts use their fingers when wrestling with giant shrimp like these.
41:45I think most people just consider Hong Kong to be a shopping haven
41:51and completely ignore all the beautiful stuff around
41:54and all the local village life just like on this island here.
41:58So they're missing a tree.
42:02Having sampled the delights of island life just minutes away from the center,
42:06its lure is bound to drag you back.
42:09Hong Kong is a place of dreams and a city of high-octane beauty.
42:15Jackie Chan is still in love with his birthplace, Hong Kong.
42:19It was the starting point for his movie career,
42:21and he'll never forget his roots.
42:24Jackie and Hong Kong have grown up together
42:26from humble beginnings into something really special.
42:30Jackie has emerged from an unknown bit-part stuntman
42:33to a Hollywood box-office smash.
42:37Meanwhile, Hong Kong has grown into one of the great cities of the world.
42:41It's a place where East meets West in a fascinating fusion of cultures.
42:46But it hasn't lost its ancient and mysterious flavor.
42:49You can still experience the ancient feel of China.
42:53But in a city that has truly embraced the future,
42:57don't expect it to be exactly the same next time you return.
43:12I think that's the image of Hong Kong, building on two sides of the harbour.
43:17When I look at it, it's really beautiful.
43:19Yeah.
43:49Yeah.
43:52Yeah.
44:01And you can still hear it.
44:02You know, you're right.
44:02So you've got six cities.
