Jason Sobel- Significance of Water to Wine - Signs & Secrets of the Messiah
Transcript
00:10Last week, we took our first glimpse at Yeshua's first miracle.
00:14We uncovered the connections between the Jewish wedding celebration and God's character.
00:21In this episode, we'll continue to explore the profound symbolism at the wedding in Cana of Galilee.
00:30Through this miracle, we discover the blueprint to abundant living, abundant faith and trust, abundant obedience, and abundant chutzpah.
00:41We're going to see like Moses, we're called to have an intimate relationship with God and to act with faith
00:49and trust, even when our own resources run dry.
00:54Let's keep exploring how prophecy is being fulfilled today.
00:59This is where we see the Bible in HD.
01:02That's right now on Signs and Secrets of the Messiah.
01:07That's right now on Signs and Secrets of the Messiah.
01:10I'm the one who was our friend.
01:11I'm the one who was the one who was a king.
01:29That's right now on Signs and Secrets of the Messiah.
01:38You're going to hear me say this a lot throughout this series
01:42because it's true.
01:44Everything in the scripture has meaning and happens for a reason.
01:49This means that overlooking any detail about a passage
01:53leaves so much undiscovered.
01:56One of the ways we can understand the word of God on a deeper level
02:00is by understanding the context of the events in the Bible.
02:06Remember in Exodus when Moses turned the waters of the Nile River to blood?
02:12Standing before Pharaoh, he struck the water with his staff
02:16and it miraculously became a bloody stream.
02:19The fish in the Nile died and the water was totally undrinkable.
02:25Let's have a little history lesson.
02:27Ancient Egypt was a metropolis,
02:30a very advanced city with rich agriculture and technology.
02:34Pretty much all of that was made possible by the Nile River.
02:39Having a source of water close to the city meant that crops could grow
02:44and so could the population.
02:46It was their source of life.
02:49When God turned the water to blood through Moses, it was a statement.
02:54It took the entire foundation of Egypt and threatened its very existence.
03:00The thing that Pharaoh and the Egyptians needed most to live
03:04was now replaced with death and decay.
03:10Can you see why this miracle was such a big move?
03:15Old Testament scripture prophesies about the Messiah.
03:20He was supposed to be a prophet even greater than Moses.
03:26Moses was the guy that parted the Red Sea and turned the Nile to blood.
03:31He led the Israelites out of captivity
03:34and brought down the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai.
03:38This means that for the world to know without a shadow of a doubt
03:43that Yeshua Jesus is the Messiah,
03:46he would have to see prophecy fulfilled.
03:50And it would have to be fulfilled in an undeniable way.
03:57Okay, history lesson over.
04:00Let's fast forward to Yeshua's first miracle at the wedding.
04:05This is where he turns the water into wine, the Mayim into Yain.
04:11You might see a connection already.
04:13Water like the Nile, wine like the blood.
04:17But think about the context of what Moses' miracle represented.
04:23It was taking a source of life and turning it into the opposite, death.
04:29Yeshua's first miracle, he turns the entire thing on its head.
04:36He demonstrates that he is the greater than Moses.
04:41The one whom the prophet spoke about is here,
04:45and he brings life and blessing within.
04:48This comparison is a major theme throughout the book of John.
04:54Establishing Yeshua as the promised Messiah
04:56and the second greater Redeemer, much like Moses.
05:02But let's think about it for a moment.
05:04What sets Moses apart?
05:06First, Moses had an intimate relationship with God.
05:11Scripture says that Moses knew God face to face,
05:15Deuteronomy 34, 10 through 12.
05:18This is a big deal.
05:20It makes Moses unique among all the prophets.
05:24God spoke to the prophets in dreams and vision,
05:27but God spoke to Moses like one speaks to a friend.
05:32John's gospel begins by declaring,
05:35in the beginning was the word,
05:37and the word was literally face to face with God.
05:42This is immediately setting the tone.
05:45John goes on to say,
05:47Torah was given through Moses.
05:49Grace and truth came through Yeshua, the Messiah.
05:54No one has ever seen God,
05:56but the one and only God in the Father's embrace
05:59has made him known.
06:01John 1, 17 and 18.
06:04Here, John is making it clear
06:06that Yeshua shares an even deeper connection
06:09with the Father than Moses ever did.
06:13Secondly, Moses performed extraordinary signs and wonders.
06:18Yes, he turned water into blood,
06:20but Yeshua turned water into wine.
06:23Why?
06:24Because he came to bring us life
06:26and abundant life at that, John 10, 10.
06:29Wine symbolizes much more than simply a tasty drink.
06:34It carries deep significance in the Old Testament.
06:43The rabbis teach that Genesis contains a prophetic description of the Messiah.
06:49In Genesis 49, 10 through 12, it is written,
06:53The scepter shall not depart from Judah,
06:56nor the ruler's staff from between his feet
06:59until he comes to whom it belongs.
07:03He washes his garments in wine
07:05and in the blood of grapes, his robe.
07:09This is a vivid picture that portrays the Messiah
07:13washing his garments in wine,
07:15symbolizing abundance and blessing.
07:18Even as we read about in Amos,
07:20the mountains will drip with sweet wine.
07:23Wine is way more valuable than water.
07:26It takes a long time to grow and ferment.
07:29It's expensive and isn't common at all.
07:33That's why the image of the Messiah
07:35washing his clothes in wine is so impactful.
07:40It's revealing to us that in the Messianic kingdom,
07:43there will be so much abundance
07:45that wine, something that is so valuable,
07:49will be used for something as lowly as doing laundry.
07:53It's the abundance and blessing of the Messianic kingdom.
07:57It's the overflow.
07:58This means that Yeshua's first miracle
08:01not only brought joy to the wedding party,
08:04but also pointed to the overflowing blessings
08:08found in the kingdom.
08:10This is where he desires us to dwell.
08:13Because through his sacrifice on the cross,
08:16he provided restoration, hope, and abundant life.
08:21He doesn't want us to seek the earthly abundance
08:24that we think we need.
08:26We can move beyond the Nile rivers in our lives
08:30and embrace the provision of God.
08:33This sort of context reveals just how intentional God is.
08:39Yeshua's first miracle had to be water to wine,
08:43because it perfectly displays God's heart,
08:47abundance and joy for his people,
08:49and a sneak preview of the coming Messianic kingdom.
09:03I love spending time in Israel,
09:05and I especially love being in the Galilee,
09:10Galil in Hebrew.
09:12You know, we're not far from the biblical city of Cana of the Galilee,
09:18and we're actually in the biblical region of the territory
09:23that would have been given to the tribe of Zebulun.
09:28And this is actually one of the most fertile and fruitful parts of Israel.
09:35It's historically known for its vineyard and its winemaking,
09:41and so it makes sense that Yeshua turns the water into wine
09:45at a wedding here in Cana.
09:49Israel was one of the original nations that had a wine culture.
09:55There would have been many vineyards here in ancient times.
10:00Winemaking goes back over 5,000 years in the land of Israel.
10:05And as you see, we're standing in this vineyard.
10:08They're still making wine, even to this day,
10:10but a little bit different than it was in the past.
10:13It's amazing to think of the rich biblical history and heritage,
10:18and to be able to be here and to see it
10:22and to walk in the footsteps of Messiah is absolutely incredible.
10:29We've seen how wine, yain, symbolizing abundance
10:33was a key part of the miracle at the wedding.
10:36I want to go a little deeper into this
10:39because it applies right now to your life.
10:42We're called to live in simcha, joy and abundance.
10:47I'm sure you're thinking, yeah, that sounds great, but how?
10:52Well, I want to show you that this miracle outlines
10:56a blueprint for abundance.
11:02Abundant life is right now within your grasp.
11:06I'm breaking this abundance down into three points.
11:10First, we have abundant faith, emunah, and trust, betachon.
11:16Let's look back at a play-by-play of the miracle at the wedding.
11:22Yeshua, the disciples, and Mary are attending the wedding.
11:27Here's where it gets interesting.
11:28When the wine ran out, his mom turns to him and said,
11:33they don't have any wine.
11:35What was his response?
11:36He basically said, Mom, what's this got to do with me?
11:41It's not yet my time.
11:43Mary wouldn't take no for an answer.
11:46She turned to the servants and boldly declared,
11:49do whatever he tells you.
11:51Mary approached Yeshua with unwavering emunah.
11:56She fully believed that he would come through for them.
12:04The miracle only happened when the wine completely ran out.
12:10Can you imagine the humiliation and embarrassment
12:14the bride's parents must have felt?
12:16They were responsible for making sure
12:19there was enough wine for everyone,
12:21but they totally messed up.
12:24The celebration hit a major roadblock
12:27when the supply ran dry.
12:31They must have been freaking out,
12:33wondering, how did all this happen?
12:36And that's when Mary, concerned,
12:39turns to Yeshua and exclaims,
12:41they don't have any wine.
12:44Translation, do something quick.
12:47The wedding planners were in full-scale panic mode.
12:51Many of us reach points in our life
12:54where we feel like we've hit rock bottom,
12:58emotionally, physically, and financially.
13:02We're drained.
13:04Sometimes it's our own fault.
13:06Other times it's circumstances beyond our control.
13:10Life throws us a curveball and we panic.
13:14We don't need to fear
13:16because God's got it under control.
13:19In fact, he often waits
13:21till everything runs out in our lives
13:25before showing up.
13:27Yeah, I know it sounds harsh,
13:30but God allows our own resources to dry up
13:34so that we run straight into his arms.
13:41Let me share a little personal story.
13:43Our organization, Fusion Global,
13:47has faced some serious financial struggles over the years.
13:51We started as a small ministry with a small team
13:55and we rely on the generosity of people
13:58to support our work.
14:00I can't even count the number of times
14:03I was on the verge of freaking out,
14:06but God's grace always empowered us
14:09to remain steadfast,
14:11to trust him for a provision.
14:14He comes through for us every single time,
14:18sometimes in ways
14:20that can only be described as miracles.
14:23Let me tell you about one time in particular.
14:26We were invited to be part
14:29of this massive stadium event in Detroit.
14:32The problem?
14:34We didn't have the money to make it happen,
14:37but deep down we sensed God was telling us to go for it
14:40even though it meant spending over $5,000
14:44that we didn't have.
14:46Crazy, right?
14:47It was a huge leap of faith
14:49and you won't believe what happened.
14:52While we were there,
14:53we met an amazing person.
14:55Turns out she felt led by God
14:58to support our work
14:59and get this,
15:01she had no idea about our financial situation
15:04or the $5,000 we have spent,
15:07but she handed us a check
15:08and when I looked at it,
15:10I was absolutely blown away.
15:12It was for $5,000.
15:15He's basically saying,
15:17hey, I've got your back.
15:19Just trust me and stop living in fear.
15:23You know what faith is all about?
15:25It's about how we see things.
15:27When everything's falling apart
15:30and life is going crazy,
15:32it boils down to this.
15:34Do you choose to see God in the midst of the chaos
15:38and believe that he's working it all for your good?
15:41Or do you panic and run around like Chicken Little
15:44with your head cut off thinking the sky is falling?
15:48Faith, emunah,
15:50is about opening your eyes to a different perspective,
15:54one that aligns with God's vision.
15:57Helen Keller once said,
15:59the worst thing in the world
16:01is not to be born blind,
16:03but to have sight and lack vision.
16:09Here's the thing.
16:11There's a subtle difference between faith and trust.
16:16Faith means you believe in God's existence.
16:20Trust, betachon,
16:21is about moving forward,
16:24obeying his word,
16:26and having the assurance
16:27that he will come through for you.
16:30Mary had both faith and trust
16:33when she turned to her son for help at the wedding.
16:36If you want to experience abundance in your life,
16:40you'll need both of these in your arsenal.
16:46Now, when it comes to living the abundant life
16:49on God's terms,
16:50it all boils down to obedience.
16:54Mary's words to the servants,
16:57capture this beautifully.
16:59Do whatever he tells you.
17:01Unfortunately, our culture tends to view obedience
17:05in a negative light.
17:07It's seen as something unsatisfying and uncool,
17:12while cynicism and unbelief are glorified.
17:16But let me tell you,
17:17our culture has got it wrong.
17:21Disobeying God means forfeiting his blessing.
17:26It goes back to the Garden of Eden.
17:28Adam and Eve doubted God's words,
17:31and that doubt led to their disobedience.
17:35They took a bite of that forbidden fruit
17:37and were kicked out of the garden,
17:40missing out on all its amazing blessings.
17:47Finally, let's talk about abundant chutzpah.
17:51Chutzpah or chutzpah is a Yiddish word
17:54that translates to nerve,
17:56or as I like to say,
17:58holy audacity.
17:59But chutzpah is more than just guts and courage.
18:03Mary, when she said,
18:05do whatever he tells you,
18:06showed us that faith and chutzpah
18:09are essential ingredients
18:10for achieving great things.
18:13It's the perfect antidote to fear,
18:16the audacious spiritual nerve
18:19that empowers you to stand firm
18:21when necessary
18:22and boldly move forward,
18:25taking major risks under God's guidance.
18:29Faith and risks go hand in hand.
18:32With faith, you find the courage
18:34to take risks.
18:37Yeshua exemplified holy chutzpah.
18:40Just read about what he did in the temple,
18:42overturning the tables of the money changers
18:45at the end of John 2.
18:47Now that took some serious audacity.
18:50If we want to accomplish extraordinary things for God,
18:54we can't be passive or timid.
18:56In times of adversity,
18:58God is looking for people who possess
19:00an abundance of chutzpah
19:03rooted in faith and trust.
19:05People who refuse to take no as an answer.
19:17We've covered so much ground
19:19in our exploration of the miracle
19:22of the wedding of Cain at Galilee.
19:24We've seen how the wedding connects
19:27symbolically to God's covenant with his people,
19:30how the wine connects to Moses
19:32and Gan Aden, the Garden of Eden.
19:35We've uncovered how all these secrets
19:38point to Yeshua's desire
19:40to bring abundance into our lives.
19:44Now it's time to look at the big picture.
19:47We've seen how the wedding ceremony points
19:50to the union of God and his people,
19:53but there's another layer here.
19:55All of scripture points to Yeshua Jesus,
19:59but this miracle in particular
20:01shows how he views us.
20:04It's the powerful symbol of Yeshua
20:08as the bridegroom in us as his beloved bride.
20:12Yeshua wants to provide for us
20:15and care for us.
20:17What does that look like?
20:19Let's take a moment and explore
20:21the concept of provision and blessing.
20:24In Exodus 21.10,
20:27we find a verse that speaks about
20:30the obligations of a husband to his wife.
20:33This is practical stuff.
20:35It outlines what the Old Testament expectations
20:39would be for a marriage.
20:41It says,
20:43if he marries another woman,
20:45he must not deprive the first wife
20:48of her food, clothing, and marital rights.
20:51This verse reveals God's desire
20:55to provide for his people in three ways,
20:58sustenance, clothing, and intimate relationship.
21:02Since scripture tells us that we are his bride,
21:06it only makes sense that this reveals the things
21:10that God wants to do for us as well.
21:14God wants to meet your practical needs.
21:18This points to Yeshua as the source
21:21of our physical comfort.
21:24Hosea 2.19 and 20 beautifully captures
21:28God's heart for his people.
21:30It says,
21:31I will betroth you to me forever.
21:34I will betroth you to me in righteousness and justice,
21:37in love and compassion.
21:40I will betroth you to me in faithfulness,
21:43and you will acknowledge the Lord.
21:45This passage isn't speaking about clothing or food.
21:50It's about the intangible things.
21:52Not only does Yeshua want to meet our physical needs,
21:57but he wants to change our hearts.
22:00This is him meeting our spiritual needs.
22:03Now, we live in a broken world
22:07where sin has caused a separation between us and God.
22:13Things aren't perfect here
22:14by any stretch of the imagination.
22:17In the midst of our broken world,
22:19God has set up all sorts of examples
22:22of his love and glory.
22:24Family might be one of the best examples.
22:27It's a way that we can see pieces of God's character.
22:32The love of a parent gives us just a tiny glimpse
22:36at the love that God has for his creation.
22:40The commitment that you have with your spouse
22:43shows us a little sliver of the commitment
22:46that God has for us.
22:48These earthly examples can't even begin to compare
22:52to the love and joy we will experience
22:55on the other side of eternity.
22:58Yeshua performing his first miracle at a wedding
23:01offered us a glimpse of the ultimate wedding celebration.
23:06The messianic wedding,
23:08the marriage supper of the Lamb.
23:10The book of Revelation paints a vivid picture
23:13of this glorious event.
23:15In Revelation 19, 7 to 8,
23:19we read these words,
23:21Let us rejoice and be glad
23:22and give him glory
23:24for the wedding of the Lamb has come
23:27and the bride has made herself ready.
23:30Fine linen, bright and clean,
23:32was given to her to wear.
23:39Yeshua's first miracle at the wedding feast
23:43wasn't just a random act of kindness.
23:46It was a sneak preview,
23:48a glimpse into the future.
23:50A future where we,
23:52as the bride of the Messiah,
23:54will celebrate the ultimate wedding supper of the Lamb.
23:58I'm sure you've been to weddings
24:01where you felt the love in the air.
24:04The joy, the unity, laughter and celebration.
24:08It's an incredible environment to be in.
24:11Now can you imagine
24:13what a wedding hosted by our Creator would be like?
24:17That's going to be quite a party
24:19on a whole nother level.
24:27Throughout this journey,
24:28we're going to analyze more of Yeshua's signs
24:32and discover even more secrets.
24:35But to do it,
24:36we have to look at the new
24:38through the lens of the old
24:40and the old through the lens of the new.
24:43Scripture is meant to be viewed as a whole.
24:46When we neglect the old Torah,
24:49we miss out on the significance of the signs
24:52that Yeshua Jesus performed during His ministry.
24:56That's what this journey is all about.
25:00We're bridging the gap.
25:02I don't want you to ever view these miracles
25:04the same way again.
25:06I want you to see the events through Jewish eyes.
25:10You'll be shocked how Scripture gains this new depth
25:14and the little details finally make sense.
25:18That's what I call seeing the Bible in HD.
25:22That's why I wrote this book,
25:24Signs and Secrets of the Messiah.
25:26That's what we do with our ministry, Fusion Global.
25:30And that's why we love taking people to Israel
25:33on Rock Road and Rabbi tours.
25:36It makes the Scriptures come alive.
25:39On our next episode,
25:41we're beginning our exploration
25:43of another incredible miracle.
25:46We're taking a look at the signs
25:48and secrets of healing.
25:49When Yeshua gave a man the ability to walk
25:53for the first time in almost four decades,
25:57He didn't just help a hurting person.
26:00He gave us clues to His true identity.
26:03That's what we're diving into right here next time
26:07on Signs and Secrets of the Messiah.
26:36that's what we're diving into right here next time.
