00:00:22Good afternoon, everybody. I'm Vern Lundquist along with Dan Fouts.
00:00:26Philadelphia and Dallas have split their first two games this season. Game three this afternoon, a lot more on the
00:00:31line, Dan.
00:00:32And to put it in political context as we await the inauguration of our new president, it's a liberal conservative
00:00:38battle today.
00:00:39And you might be surprised, but the Cowboys are the conservatives in this game.
00:00:43With six Pro Bowl players on offense, you'd be surprised to find that Jimmy Johnson has told his offense that
00:00:49he wants him to be patient, to avoid the bad play, the turnover.
00:00:53Let his number one rated defense win this football game.
00:00:57In fact, he told the offense, if you think you have to win this game, you probably won't.
00:01:01The Cowboys are here as division champs. The Eagles are here as wild cards.
00:01:06They had to play last week. They won a big one at New Orleans.
00:01:09But there's been an ongoing conversation. Which is of more value, the rest or the momentum?
00:01:14And Richie Kotite said last night, I can promise you, you can't buy momentum and we've got a ton.
00:01:19Well, and they got it because of that great come-from-behind win last week against New Orleans.
00:01:24Kotite said he's the liberal in this game. He has to open up his offense early in this game.
00:01:29And he doesn't think that the Cowboys can come from behind because if they have to, they'll face that great
00:01:34pass rush of the Eagles.
00:01:37Philadelphia won the toss and they will receive to open the game.
00:01:42This is Dallas' first home playoff game since 1983.
00:01:49Lynn Elliott sends it deep.

00:01:56So the Eagles will open with very good field position.

00:02:47Charles Haley expected to have a big day.
00:02:50He's an early season acquisition from the 49ers.
00:02:53He is joined up front by Tolbert, Casillas, and Maryland.
00:02:57The linebackers, Vincent Smith, a rookie, Robert Jones, Ken Norton on the outside.
00:03:03And the secondary, another rookie, Smith, Larry Brown, Washington, and Everett,
00:03:07all coordinated by this man, Dave Wanstead, whose name has been prominently mentioned for a couple of vacant jobs.
00:03:19Cunningham showing a bit of patience, says the crowd noise will not be a factor today.
00:03:26Looks left all the way, avoids the sack, pulls it up, fires, flag is down.
00:03:32The pass is caught at the 46, and another flag is thrown at the 50-yard line.
00:03:37So we've got two of them.

00:03:57This may be a case where the receiver was out of bounds as well, and made him ineligible.

00:04:41Part of the game plan for the Eagles today, we'll put Herschel Walker in the I-formation
00:04:46behind Heath Sherman, and at least start the game with some misdirection type of plays.
00:04:51The Cowboys pursue so well, they have such great penetration along that defensive line,
00:04:56and Cotite wants to give them a look of running to the weak side,
00:04:59and have Herschel cut it back strong side.
00:05:02Dallas Cowboys led the league in defense against third downs in 1992.
00:05:10It's third and fourth, and Haley comes offside.
00:05:18And that'll give the Eagles a first down because Haley was so far off sides, couldn't get back.
00:05:28Unless there was motion in the offensive line, that's what Jimmy Johnson is claiming.

00:06:37And he is bumped out of bounds at the 35-yard line by Darren Woodson, number 28,
00:06:44who's been a big addition to the nickel defensive package of Dave Wanstead and the Cowboys.
00:06:49A perfect start for the Cowboys as their defense stops Eagles on their first possession,
00:06:55and then they'll bring on their special teams where they are so excellent at blocking punts,
00:07:00especially number 30, Isaac Holt.
00:07:02It was Kelvin Martin who, a year ago, stabbed the Eagles with an 85-yard punt return in Philadelphia
00:07:09that knocked them out of the playoffs.
00:07:11The Eagles with a terrific punt.
00:07:12There is a flag down.
00:07:15And Kelvin Martin has cut down the 18-19 yard line.
00:07:20Now we'll see if the Eagles might have left early or the Cowboys were offside.
00:07:31Jimmy's trying to get that same call.
00:07:33This will be against the Cowboys, and this will give the Eagles that first down.
00:07:37Crucial mistake on fourth and less than five yards to jump offsides on the punt block team.
00:07:44Now, Pat Beach is the center on kicking situations,
00:07:48and Johnson, I think, is claiming that he moved the ball as Alexander did earlier.
00:07:53Now, here's Beach right in the middle, and he moved the ball,
00:07:55but he moved it forward to cock it and get it loaded and snap it between his legs.

00:08:09Ike Holt, who, if anybody blocks one for Dallas today, that'll be the man.

00:08:34He was an outstanding pass catcher out of the backfield during his duration in Dallas.
00:08:42Well, we've seen Randall very patient in the pocket on his first two pass attempts,
00:08:47just dumping it off to Herschel on the swing,
00:08:49and that time it paid off for him as it picked up about eight yards.
00:08:53That builds confidence in a quarterback,
00:08:56something Cotite says is very important.
00:08:58He has a determined number 12 playing for him,
00:09:01but he's still, Cotite that is, worries about his confidence level.
00:09:05Second down and two, officially.
00:09:12They hand it off to Heath Sherman,
00:09:14and he's got the first down as he crosses into Cowboy Country at the 47-yard line.
00:09:23Cunningham is off to a three-for-three start,
00:09:25so that bodes well for Eagle fans and for the Eagle offense.
00:09:29But this guy right here, Heath Sherman,
00:09:31has been so important lately for the Eagles,
00:09:35105 yards last week against New Orleans.
00:09:38And this is why it's so hard to see back here,
00:09:40and he makes sharp cuts.
00:09:43On first and ten, Cotite and the Eagles go with what they call an ace package.
00:09:48Two wide receivers, two tight ends, and one running back.

00:10:04That's a gain of seven to Fred Barnett,
00:10:06who had two catches for touchdowns last week in New Orleans.
00:10:11And we look at this formation.
00:10:13Here's Byers, and here's Mo Johnson.
00:10:15So this is the ace formation.
00:10:17Two tight ends, and outside are two wide receivers.
00:10:20What this does is gives these Eagles balance across the entire line.
00:10:25Good pass protection there,
00:10:27and this is a nice seven-yard gain on first down.
00:10:30That's a formation we might see a lot of during third down and long today.
00:10:34It's going to force Haley and the other defensive ends to rush wider
00:10:38and give Cunningham more room to scramble up the middle.
00:10:42Second and three.
00:10:43Walker dances into the secondary with another Philadelphia first down.
00:10:47He is tackled at the 31 after a gain of nine.
00:10:55Well, Baldinger and Alexander are going to open up a nice hole on the left side.

00:11:01And watch as Herschel jumps through this hole for the first down.
00:11:04A nine-yard pickup, and this is his longest run.
00:11:08In a playoff game, his previous long was seven yards last week against New Orleans.
00:11:13He would deny any emotion about this game,
00:11:15but if you know him, you know that the emotion is present.
00:11:19Has to be.

00:11:23Walker comes left.
00:11:25Bobs and wheels and breaks a tackle.
00:11:27And the Eagles are doing an early job
00:11:29on the number one rushing defense in the National Football League.
00:11:33And that time they went right at Charles Haley, number 94.
00:11:37And this is what they want to do.
00:11:40They feel that Haley is a little bit undersized for a defensive end.
00:11:43He's controlled by the tight end there.
00:11:45Barnett gets an excellent job kicking out the cornerback, Brown.
00:11:49And it's a first down for the Eagles as they enter the red area.
00:11:53And a gain of 13, already 27 yards for Herschel Walker.

00:12:06Byers comes in motion,
00:12:08then turns back and leads Walker through the hole at right guard.
00:12:12And this time the defense holds,
00:12:14but a little bit of a twist on that running play
00:12:17as Byers turned back and was the lead blocker.
00:12:20And the reason they call it the red area is that's an alert for the offense.
00:12:24Red is an alert color.
00:12:25It means stop.
00:12:26It means danger.
00:12:27Well, the danger is here that this is the area of the field
00:12:30where defenses like to blitz a lot.
00:12:32And no team likes to blitz more in this area than the Dallas Cowboys.
00:12:36That time, just too many bodies up there for Walker to get loose.

00:13:31he has been the acknowledged leader of this defense
00:13:34since coming here from the 49ers.

00:13:58But it was also characteristic of Cunningham
00:14:01to give his receiver a shot at that ball.
00:14:04And the smart thing was is he threw it in an area where
00:14:07only his receiver could catch it
00:14:10or it would go out of bounds and not turn into an interception.

00:16:37night, Johnson said it was a problem with turnovers. They moved the ball well. That gave him confidence.
00:16:43Roger Ruzak, who sprained an ankle on an extra point when hit late last week in New Orleans,
00:16:48will kick off, and Kelvin Martin is the deep man. 3-0, Philly.
00:16:56Kelvin takes a high bounce, and Kelvin Martin has it at the 13.

00:20:16One thing we'll see from Dallas is a very conservative game plan by Norv Turner and Jimmy Johnson.
00:20:23They know that this defense of the Eagles has the ability to make a lot of turnovers,
00:20:28create those turnovers, and Johnson doesn't want to help him any.
00:20:31He said, in fact, yesterday, he's got to be willing that if things start to go bad,
00:20:36to pull back and just run the ball and punt it and not put his defense in bad position.
00:20:41Third down and nine, Eagles show a blitz.
00:20:45They're not coming.
00:20:47Aikman, with time, goes right for Novacek.
00:20:50Big catch.

00:20:54Well, he's an all-pro starter again this year,
00:20:57and he slumped horribly at the middle of the season.
00:20:59Matter of fact, the last game these two teams played, Novacek dropped a couple.

00:21:52His second choice might surprise you a little bit.

00:21:58because he realizes that the Eagles are going to be looking for Irvin

01:10:49And he likes guys that are light.
01:10:51He doesn't like a bunch of fat guys.
01:10:53He says we're the lightest team and the youngest team.
01:10:56And perhaps the fastest team in the NFL.

01:11:52I don't think it's ever has been as fierce as that between Dallas and Washington back in the Landry-George
01:11:58Allen days.
01:11:59But when Dick Vermeule was at Philadelphia and Landry was here in the late 70s, early 80s, these two teams
01:12:06got on it pretty good.
01:12:07And Philadelphia beat Dallas the only time they've played in the playoffs for the NFC Championship in 15-degree weather
01:12:14in 1980.
01:12:16But then when Buddy Ryan came aboard at Philadelphia before Jimmy Johnson got here, the rivalry began to get intense,
01:12:23and it's grown ever since.
01:12:25Yeah, Buddy stirred things up pretty good.
01:12:26But Bowtide, he's comfortable with the fact that it's a good rivalry.
01:12:31This is his type of game, being an ex-boxer.
01:12:33He likes that man-on-man challenge.
