1990 West Germany England 1/2
Transcript
00:00:05the saga continues tonight the stakes are high and mighty live from turin england against west
00:00:11germany for a place on the world's finest stage and the possibility of eternal glory in the
00:00:16eternal city of rome a very good evening to you our national game has been barracked buffeted
00:00:23belittled it's taken a right old hammering but here we are in the semi-finals of the world cup
00:00:27it's the biggest the proudest day in english football history since this fellow here lifted
00:00:32the world cup the jules remade trophy in 1966 bobby bobby more are we going to do it tonight
00:00:37well i sincerely hope so i mean for the first time we're probably going into a game the out-and
00:00:41-out
00:00:41underdogs i mean everything stacks up in favor of the germans but i mean the way the lads are digging
00:00:46into the reserves of energy and the determination and the character in the side you know who can say
00:00:51and the way the tournament's going yeah i think they might well do this is the place to be in
00:00:56turin
00:00:57tonight graham what about you are you for england well of course i'm for england yeah very much so
00:01:01and of course everybody back home are for england this is really it isn't it so let's get in and
00:01:07get
00:01:07at them now the team news not quite as anticipated actually terry butcher playing as an extra defender
00:01:12at the back peter beardsley is in as well alongside gary lineker but the butcher news is the one that
00:01:16seems to have surprised a few people bobby well yeah i mean i think we was waiting to see exactly
00:01:22what
00:01:22was going to be happening with regards to mark wright and uh john barnes but uh you know it would
00:01:26appear that uh you know he's starting with the team that started the second half against the
00:01:30cameroons which was basically a straightforward change beardsley for barnes and uh you know
00:01:34hopefully the result's going to be the same you were surprised weren't you terry butcher uh warming up
00:01:39there well i think the thing is that when the uh changes were made in the last game which resulted
00:01:44in trevor stephen uh being on the side and terry coming off i think a lot of people thought
00:01:49probably bobby would stick that but i mean you know terry butcher has not let the country down
00:01:53over 10 years why should everybody now be assuming he's going to let the situation down now i personally
00:01:59think that the fellow has done so well for the country there's no reason why we should be in any
00:02:04shape or form frightened because terry butcher's selected he's he'll be in there don't worry he'll
00:02:09be leading those lads on tonight and i think we are all i was going to have to just carry
00:02:14on
00:02:14actually bobby and incidentally thanks to bobby moore for joining us who's in good voice and
00:02:18commentating for capital radio uh uh this evening well by mutual agreement as we all know bobby robson
00:02:24will be moving on after the world cup we all know that but what a marvelous prospect for bobby to
00:02:28go
00:02:28out right at the very top here he is with jim rosenthal we'll be aware tonight when we come out
00:02:35of that
00:02:35tunnel and up the steps and and hit the green pitch just what the match is about what we're not
00:02:42aware
00:02:43of here as you can see it's so peaceful and quiet i don't think we're aware of the the atmosphere
00:02:50uh and the desire of people people back home i mean we're conscious of it but we're not there we're
00:02:56not in the streets we're not down the high street we're not shopping we're not hitting the buzz are
00:02:59we we're not watching the television we're not listening to the radio all the time you know we're
00:03:03trying to kind of keep players uh not sedated but nice and quiet and getting our rest and just
00:03:09concentrating on the game if there's one thing above all that you're going to drum into your players
00:03:15drum into every one of those players before they face the west germans tonight what is it bobby
00:03:19i'd have to be we've got the technical ability it has to be spirit you know the thing that got
00:03:24us
00:03:25through against cameroon you know we hung on didn't give it up i've seen the i've seen brazil get
00:03:30through on artistry on football uh well we haven't quite got the artistry of brazil but we have other
00:03:36factors we had we had factors in at the end of the cameroon match which the cameroon team didn't
00:03:41have that's what got us through let's hope those factors play their part tonight good evening to you
00:03:45from london and besides bobby moore's 108 caps in turin we have another 179 here in the studio with
00:03:52jimmy greaves jeff hurst and gordon banks all part of that memorable winning campaign in the world cup
00:03:58finals of the 66 jeffrey are you feeling at all nervous i certainly am i said in 66 it's the
00:04:03crowd that's
00:04:04nervous playing you're not so bad it's your family and friends and the nation that are nervous and
00:04:08i'm part of the nation and one of the supporters tonight and i'm terribly nervous are you the same
00:04:12gordon yeah i'm like everybody i think in uh in britain uh rooting for england and uh we've got to
00:04:18this stage now very very crucial stage semi-final and uh we're rooting for them to go through yeah
00:04:23jim i haven't particularly noticed your knees knocking no um i'm quietly confident after yesterday
00:04:30anything can happen in this world cup can't it so let's hope for the best mate yeah i thought your
00:04:35teeth were chattering when you put them on the table this afternoon they were they were for a bit but
00:04:39that was when the air conditioning's on now it's warmed up i mean they're they're nice and just have
00:04:43a quick look at the message the shirt oh well the shirt is toe one in against the old foe
00:04:48gary it's
00:04:48going to be semi-tough but england can do it let's have the spirit of 66 that's what it's all
00:04:55about
00:04:55well let's just talk about the game itself now uh gordon first of all i'm sure you're going to have
00:04:59particular interest in peter shilton because of course i mean when he started he was an understudy
00:05:03to you wasn't he at leicester that's right at leicester nick um he signed as a schoolboy
00:05:06played for england and uh he then uh signed full-time for forms and here we've got a game
00:05:13against egypt a great save got down and the guy's only maybe four yards from gore it's a terrific game
00:05:18next one against the belgium and he gets down tremendously it's going in the bottom corner
00:05:23but to his credit he pushes it away from the goal fortunately right he comes in knocks it for a
00:05:28corner kick but the best one of all this one against the cameroons where the the guy's completely clear
00:05:33under no pressure at all peter stands up holds his ground and then goes for the block great save
00:05:39a lot of goalkeepers would have committed themselves there and then and and it would have been easy for
00:05:44the forward but he made the goal very very small i mean he's he's 40 years old now are you
00:05:48quite happy
00:05:49that he's still number one oh yeah that that's why he's there that's why he's selected and uh he's
00:05:54been doing his job for england they've conceded a very few goals uh over the last few years and uh
00:05:59he's had a great experience counts for a lot mate yeah jeff let's have a word about the germans now
00:06:04i'm
00:06:04sure you're interested in the danger men well they've got three danger men haven't they i mean
00:06:07loath and matthias particularly the captain here we see him in the middle of the park he gets from box
00:06:11to box magnificently very very quick he sets this this ball up wide i think it's to to clinsman
00:06:17and he finishes the move as well and for a small midfield player he gets a very very good header
00:06:22which really goes in the corner and he's is well respected by his fellow mates jürgen clinsman is
00:06:27not only a great player he's having a great world cup and he's a tremendous athlete look at the way
00:06:31he carries away from ricard here with the ball not even without it and carries on running carries on
00:06:36putting him under pressure and he's had a super world cup and we've got rudy voller who again scored
00:06:41in the final four years ago he's had a rest but being sent off he'll be very very fresh
00:06:45and every finish is on target again so you've got three world-class troublemakers tonight at least
00:06:51three to start with yeah are you astonished jim that the opponents in the final of england get
00:06:55there are going to be argentina i am totally disillusioned by this world cup after the
00:07:01archers won it last night i have to be honest i think it's a sad day for the world cup
00:07:05because
00:07:06we all wanted italy to get there regardless because it keeps the pot bubbling over there yeah also because
00:07:11they look to be the best side and argentina don't deserve to be there they've scraped their way
00:07:15through and italy got off to a reasonable start um it might have been a little bit offside but little
00:07:23scalachi knocked it in and they looked at cruising along for a decent win and then i think they allowed
00:07:31argentina they sat back as they normally do allow argentina to come on i don't know what zenga was doing
00:07:37there gordon would know but uh and then poor old donadonio i thought was one of the outstanding
00:07:43players in the italian side misses the pen and there's maradona i was praying for that to go in
00:07:51i don't think um and then i don't know they didn't do their own work because the keeper dived that
00:07:58way
00:07:58in the match against the yugoslavs and he dived that way in that game as well i'm very sad because
00:08:04they have scraped their way through yeah they did play well last night i thought they played
00:08:08reasonably well last night but where can you get a meal an italian meal in london tonight
00:08:14ain't a waiter in sight now just a brief word are you happy to see beardsley in the side tonight
00:08:18for
00:08:18england um not really but uh there you go you know it's um it's bobby robson's choice uh i've got
00:08:25to
00:08:25be honest peter beardsley wouldn't be mine but bobby obviously got a lot of confidence in him
00:08:31all i can say is that if i had a manager that looked like me i'd have got more caps
00:08:35probably jeff and gordon would have done as well i think clients agree with that with uh i thought
00:08:39travis steven would play on the right hand side yeah i think everyone which would help to occupy
00:08:43bremer not occupying but be more concerned about him i think steven would have given a better balance
00:08:48jeff you're quite right okay for the time being thanks very much back to turin after the break
00:09:02well like bobby robson this world cup marks the end for franz beckenbauer as national
00:09:07team manager hoping to become only the second man in history to win the world cup both as a manager
00:09:11and as a player tony francis reports on the most successful and charismatic figure in german football
00:09:19the urbane mr beckenbauer exudes that majestic slightly superior quality which characterized his
00:09:26play that's why they call him kaiser the emperor we first noticed him as a 20 year old in 1966
00:09:33the only attacking sweeper in the world but powerless as it happened to prevent jeff hurst and
00:09:40england from running away with the trophy four years later in mexico it was a different story
00:09:47beckenbauer's goal began to undermine peter bonetti's confidence and from 2-0 up england were on their
00:09:53way out of the world cup
00:09:57we hope we play the same good game like we did 20 years ago and also we try we try
00:10:07to win the game
00:10:08and to be in the final there was an outcry in some quarters when beckenbauer was given the national
00:10:14job six years ago he had no qualifications as a coach only a record 103 caps for his country
00:10:21failure in the european championships on home soil two years ago was a setback but he's recovered very
00:10:27well his squad's been together for 50 days now the atmosphere is marvelous you can tell and the
00:10:34football has been by far the most impressive of the tournament italian clubs are falling over
00:10:39themselves to buy his players and it's no wonder here's book file the big defender
00:10:46litbarsky coming up in support
00:10:57his nonchalance belies a fierce determination to win the world cup again for germany
00:11:01and england's victory over the cameroons is exactly what he wanted cameroon is a very very
00:11:07uncomfortable uh team and it's it's not our style it's not our european style and we it's very very
00:11:15difficult to play against them so and also the english team we know everybody very very well so
00:11:23it's easier for us to play against england so there after the tournament the emperor hands the team
00:11:29over to bertie volks another world cup veteran while he repairs to his home in the austrian ski resort of
00:11:35kitzbühel before deciding what to do next marketing executive to the german football association club
00:11:43manager in the middle east or possibly u.s national team supremo that's if his command of the language is
00:11:50okay
00:11:52well there we are the great man kaiser franz franz beckenbauer but what about the the general
00:11:57for west germany out on the pitch these days graham lothar matthias well i mean arguably he's the best
00:12:03all-round midfield player in the world now and in terms of the team that beckenbauer has selected
00:12:10it looks to me as if he's providing matthias with a lot of midfield support what would concern me a
00:12:16little
00:12:17bit is how are we going to prevent this man with his very strong surging runs getting into the heart
00:12:22of us you tell me i can't tell you at the present time i'm going to watch and wait and
00:12:28see because
00:12:28it's just as important we create problems to them but matthias is a danger to us there's no doubt about
00:12:34that as i say he's selected other midfield players to give him that support it's a battle it's at the
00:12:41highest level that's what can david black keep an eye on him and also get forward into damaging
00:12:45positions as far as we're concerned i don't think that that is going to be the case i think that
00:12:49beckenbauer selected people to take care of the plat and to take care of gascoigne in the hope and
00:12:57the belief that england haven't selected someone to take care of matthias now on paper at the moment
00:13:03elton it looks that way and that's a little bit of a concern i think for any englishman what about
00:13:09peter beardsley up alongside gary lineker now you know lineker's happy with beardsley isn't he
00:13:13well i think that is as much to do with just exactly what you've said i think that gary lineker
00:13:18and peter beardsley now over the last four years have created a partnership where they're happy with
00:13:24one another and therefore i would read as much into peter beardsley's selection as to gary lineker
00:13:30being happy in terms of peter being able to hold up the ball make the kind of little runs that
00:13:35create
00:13:35space for gary and gary's aware of that it's been a partnership that has worked together more
00:13:41successfully than not over the last four years so i see little wrong as to why not play it in
00:13:46the
00:13:46semi-final of the world cup tell you what it's it's not full but there's a real buzz around this
00:13:51place
00:13:52maybe it's just because we're being very patriotic very jingoistic or whatever but i'm so excited why
00:13:57shouldn't we be i mean i'm hoping back home now i mean we're reading out here there's probably overall
00:14:02going to be 30 million people watching uh television tonight quite right and let's get in there and
00:14:08look for that win it's there's nothing wrong with being patriotic there's nothing wrong with wanting
00:14:14your team to win and i'm as excited as anybody else because i'm a spectator like yourself as well as
00:14:19looking at what i suppose people would say the professional side of things but this is the big thing
00:14:24isn't it it's a big game it's a big occasion and we're in there at long last we're in there
00:14:28well
00:14:29we've got another england fan who's just literally i was going to say walked in to join us i'm sure
00:14:34he's probably run i mean steve cramp great to see you steve isn't it nice to be here well i'm
00:14:38delighted
00:14:39i had a little bit with my wife about a month ago she said england will not even get the
00:14:43semi-final
00:14:44she said but if they do you can go and watch them so here i am delighted to be here
00:14:48and hope they have
00:14:48a good game in your view as a sudden supporters a very knowledgeable man about football what are the
00:14:52prospects well i think it's obviously going to be a tough game but i think the lads will be happy
00:14:58to be
00:14:58starting as underdogs i know in uh in running terms it's always better to be in that position
00:15:02and i think playing the germans will suit us a little bit more than playing against the cameroons
00:15:07our style of play and a great atmosphere here tonight and the lads have got a chance you know and
00:15:12i know if um if i was running that you love occasions like this you love the big match
00:15:17atmosphere hopefully they can turn it on today and do the business maybe even fairer question to
00:15:22you what about stamina it's now it's not as hot as it was last night for example but it's still
00:15:25going to be quite energy sapping isn't it out there well it's not so much a one-off like this
00:15:30i mean the lads have obviously had a few hard games and it it does catch up with you at
00:15:33some stage i
00:15:34mean i read i don't know if it's true that gary linick lost up to a stone in weight and
00:15:37if you're
00:15:38losing that amount of fluid it does have an effect on you um so hopefully tonight we can maybe get
00:15:42a
00:15:43result in 90 minutes and they won't have to go all the way because i think the germans have had
00:15:45a
00:15:46slightly easier passage than we have but you know they're professional footballers they're very very fit guys
00:15:51and i'm sure they'll give a hundred percent i don't know whether you know this but uh sunderland's
00:15:55first game back in division one is away to norwich now it's a little nice little training run for you
00:16:00just to get you limbered up later on well i've just heard that this evening so i'm quite happy because
00:16:05actually um i'm hoping to be at the european championship since split when the first game
00:16:09of the season starts so i'm happy it's away from home i'm not going to miss anything very strong
00:16:13geordie representation of course down there on the pitch tonight you'll be rooting for them especially will
00:16:17you yeah there's gaza chris waddle peter beardsley not mention the manager so um there's a very strong
00:16:23northeastern contingent great following back home everybody's behind them let's hope they can do it
00:16:28tonight i think graham that's that's one point which is stevie's just mentioned there and i think bobby
00:16:33mentioned in his interview as well that over here you're not quite as aware of the excitement the
00:16:38expectancy that the great sort of national feeling that there is surrounding this game well perhaps not
00:16:43but i think by now it will have got through to the players i mean in the early stages they're
00:16:48in
00:16:49sardinia away from things apparently they're now on the mainland they've got to a semi-final stage which
00:16:54many many people did not think they were going to do i think they'll be aware of it now uh
00:16:59i'll be
00:16:59surprised if they're not graham let's have a look at the the german side uh stay with us steve for
00:17:05a couple
00:17:05of moments let's have a quick look at the the german side now what do you what do you make
00:17:08of beckenbauer's
00:17:09lineup tonight well i mentioned earlier you know looking at the selection i don't think there's
00:17:14many people would have guessed his selection litbask is not even on the substitutes bench
00:17:19i he's got voller and he's got klinsman up front and he's packed his side with midfield
00:17:24players coming on from behind the ball that my one concern is that i think it gives matias support for
00:17:31him to get forward more and i think that also he will have selected uh players that's beckenbauer to
00:17:38possibly man mark gascoyne and perhaps like to get with platte as well now if that happens and we
00:17:45still are not in there with matias i i'm just a little bit concerned about that because there's no
00:17:51doubt about it both the germans and the italians they do take a lot of concern about the opposition
00:17:58and they do select sides to take into account the opposition now the italians got it wrong let's hope the
00:18:05germans have got it wrong eh just a quick word now with with gordon banks and jeff hurst in london
00:18:10i mean lads german teams have always played with great method haven't they do you think that this
00:18:15german team uh on its day has possibly got more flair than in previous years yes it looks at the
00:18:21moment
00:18:21like an outstanding team no question at all about that a very very powerful side physically what impressed
00:18:26me apart from their skill is the fact that all of them can get up and down the park as
00:18:30tremendous
00:18:31athletes and it's it's a superb test tonight if they win the world cup um which we hope they're
00:18:36not going to get past tonight they could be regarded as one of the the best german sides of all
00:18:40time in
00:18:40my opinion yeah i think they're more or less the same sort of uh style and everything that that we
00:18:46played against in our time very strong as as a side they defend well together they attack well together
00:18:52a lot of stamina and a lot of skill i think we've got to remember that when and i think
00:18:58england the lift
00:18:59that i think they'll get in this particular game is that of course argentina won yesterday the
00:19:06underdogs and of course england can win tonight
00:19:13thanks very much just a last quick word from steve crown before we let him go and enjoy the match
00:19:18and
00:19:18the atmosphere what do you make of the german steve from what you've seen on television so far
00:19:23well i think undoubtedly they've probably been uh the best sides uh in the competition so far but you
00:19:29know i think people have said they've scored goals against some defenses maybe as good as
00:19:34um the attacking side of things so hopefully we can exploit that we we've maybe not done as well going
00:19:40forward as we would have liked to have done in previous games hopefully tonight we can do it
00:19:43steve many thanks for being with us and i hope you have a great season as well
00:19:47and a great night for england building up
00:19:50as the teams are just about to appear to this uh crown i would estimate in turin tonight to be
00:19:57round about the 50 000 mark it's i'm only hazarding a guess but i would think the capacity here
00:20:04is about 80 it falls a few below that but all of them supporting either england or west germany one
00:20:10or two more germans one would expect because it is
00:20:13maybe only three or four hours drive uh across the border and down here yes but at the present
00:20:18time uh the english supporters are making the more noise and that's that's good news to us as well
00:20:24as the players in the dressing room i mean in one respect i hope that the germans are expecting
00:20:29to win this game because i think that in itself may help us uh there's no doubt about it that
00:20:35the germans
00:20:36have shown themselves to be a very good side but sometimes their confidence can go in to complacency
00:20:42they can become overconfident in their own ability arrogance the word i'd use well you can use that
00:20:49i might not use it but you can use that word and i'm sure people understand what we're saying but
00:20:54this is as far as we're concerned the people back home this is now the game isn't it that possibly
00:21:01will
00:21:01take us into the world cup and put into the world cup final and possibly win it but you can't
00:21:07look
00:21:07any further ahead now um than the next 90 minutes and i'm sure every england player out there will be
00:21:15looking to get hold of the game but as i've said previously as much as we're excited as much as
00:21:21we want
00:21:22the game talking to steve cram earlier you've still got to keep that little cold clear bit in your mind
00:21:28so that in fact you're professional enough when the heat's really on elton you've got to know what
00:21:33you're doing graham thanks very much indeed the tension's mounting here we're ready for the national
00:21:39anthems
00:21:45we will now listen to the national anthem performed by the band of the italian air force
00:22:14the national anthem
00:30:40Waddle's made a little dart in there as well.
00:30:44And it's a nice, fluid, positive start by England.
00:30:49Curler now to Berthold.
00:30:54This is Hessler.
00:30:57Soon to come and play here for Juventus.
00:31:03Stadium in Turin, of course, shared by Torino and Juventus.
00:31:09Followers making the run. Butcher spotted it.
00:31:12Took it well. Back now, back in support.
00:31:15Finds Beardsley, also supporting.
00:31:18Waddle playing it wide for Paul Parker.
00:31:23Came off for Gascoigne.
00:31:27Algantara ill at ease there.
00:31:28Hustled by Beardsley.
00:31:30And couldn't even get it through there again.
00:31:32Gascoigne now looking to get a shot in and almost succeeded in making it.
00:31:37And the Germans at the moment so uncharacteristically at sixes and sevens.
00:31:42But here's Hessler.
00:31:44Outside him is Berthold.
00:31:46Ahead of him is Rudi Voller.
00:31:49Voller's making the break.
00:31:52There's no shortage of pace so far as Des Warp is concerned.
00:31:56Voller felt that that came off the English defender.
00:32:00But as a man who's just come back from a one-match suspense and not prepared to argue with the
00:32:04officials.
00:32:06Ron Atkinson?
00:32:07Yes, it looks very much as if...
00:32:08Changed it slightly at the back today.
00:32:10Same three players occupying the back three positions for England.
00:32:13But slightly different pattern.
00:32:15Walker's going man-to-man against Voller.
00:32:18Mark Wright staying with Klinsmann.
00:32:19And Butcher's going to be the spare man at the back by the look of it.
00:32:22Makes sense to me because both Wright and Walker are quicker players than Terry Butcher.
00:32:27Terry Butcher will just be needed there to stand and organize and use his experience.
00:32:32Matthias.
00:32:34Gascoigne was pursuing him.
00:32:37Bulfold to Bremer.
00:32:41Klinsmann.
00:32:42Trying to turn Wright.
00:32:44Wright stuck well with him there.
00:32:45And no foul.
00:32:46The Brazilian referee.
00:32:49Jose Ramiz Wright.
00:32:52Has shown himself, in fact, to be one of the better referees in this World Cup tournament.
00:33:01Parker.
00:33:02A good ball from Butcher.
00:33:06Waller.
00:33:09Look twice at him.
00:33:10He's had the most savage haircut.
00:33:12Which I gather he did for charity.
00:33:13And made quite a few thousand pounds out of it.
00:33:15Lineker offside.
00:33:18He's also got a very, very important role to play tonight.
00:33:21Inasmuch as one of their key attacking figures is the number three Bremer.
00:33:25And it's so important for me that Waddle occupies him.
00:33:28Doesn't blame that infuriating deep position.
00:33:31That's neither here nor there, Brian.
00:33:33But actually has a go in a positive way.
00:33:35To keep their left back doing what he should be doing.
00:33:36Defending.
00:33:38Beardsley doing good work again.
00:33:39Getting really into the mood of this game, Peter Beardsley.
00:33:42But Gascoigne dispossessed by Hessler.
00:33:45He's after him now.
00:33:46But Hessler moved sweetly.
00:33:48Turned away from Gascoigne.
00:33:50Finds his captain Matthias.
00:33:51And in turn it's to Bremer.
00:33:54Lola on the far side.
00:33:55Walker's followed him out there.
00:33:57And succeeds in getting the tackle in.
00:33:59But he was pushing at the German striker.
00:34:01So it'll be a free kick to the West Germans.
00:34:07Parker supporting.
00:34:08The ball just in play up towards Lineker.
00:34:10Don't worry, the Germans will know all about Lineker.
00:34:13And they will be just that little bit frightened every time the ball goes towards him.
00:34:16He's in good form at the moment.
00:34:22Hits Waddle with the free kick.
00:34:26Hits Waddle with the free kick.
00:34:26In fact, both Waddle and...
00:34:32Gascoigne leaving it for Butcher.
00:34:36A throw to England.
00:34:46Fence going to Parker.
00:34:49To Waddle.
00:34:50To Waddle.
00:34:50Good play back, this one.
00:34:52Paul Parker taking it on.
00:34:53Can he get across in?
00:34:54No, it's a goal kick to the West Germans.
00:35:01and it's not a full house here and if you find yourself sitting on the edge of your seats at
00:35:07home don't worry I'm sure that there are millions in our country doing the same it's whatever you
00:35:12think or don't think of our national game it's this sort of night that draws us all together
00:35:16we all seem to be in this together as we shout on the lads in white hoping that Bobby Robson's
00:35:23team can find their way to that World Cup final against Maradona and Argentina in the Olympic
00:35:28stadium in Rome on Sunday evening it's with Waller
00:35:36now Butcher
00:35:39Robson holds such store by Terry Butcher he's known him from way back through his days at Ipswich
00:35:48and Olaf Ton
00:35:52in caution for the challenge on Chris Waddle
00:35:56here's Parker trying to get the ball into Lineker
00:36:01Beardsley up there with him now can Lineker cross it in it's a little too high for Beardsley and the
00:36:05Germans get it away up as far as Rudy Waller
00:36:09into the path of Hesler Klinsmann now he's got real speed right we'll have to motor to stay with him
00:36:19comes through to Butcher and then successfully through to Peter Schulte this looks like a problem area for us is
00:36:26going to be um little Hesler um player that I was hoping would play in this tournament because
00:36:31it's uh somebody I thought would be one of the stars of the tournament
00:36:36onside Beardsley the linesman on the far side kept his flag down
00:36:39Lineker's in a strong position as well Beardsley tried the shot the angle was far too uh severe
00:36:45they're having a lot of problems of germs at the back with when we make those little darting runs into
00:36:49the channels
00:36:50behind their uh fullback areas because uh Argantyler doesn't seem to know possibly should have crossed that a little bit
00:36:56better
00:36:56Argantyler doesn't seem to know whether to flatten out with his two marking defenders and he's playing everybody onside
00:37:01just to revert back quickly to that point I was making about Hesler
00:37:05when Platt goes forward it does leave a big hole in there Brian and I would just be worried whether
00:37:09Hesler has the ability
00:37:10which I know he has to come forward and break out of there and perhaps sometimes
00:37:14he and Berthold will find themselves going two against one um against Pierce
00:37:18well here's Hesler on the ball at the moment
00:37:20just over ten minutes of the game gone if you've just joined us here in Turin
00:37:25England 0 West Germany 0
00:37:28England in the World Cup semi-finals for the first time in 24 years
00:37:33this is West Germany's ninth World Cup semi-final
00:37:36they have an amazing record
00:37:39only twice since 1966 have they failed to reach the final itself in 1970 and 78
00:37:47here's a long way back to Peter Shilton
00:37:51and the police surely in evidence here some 7,000 we're told on duty here tonight
00:38:00Waddle the long ball forward
00:38:02Platt has gone
00:38:04chasing after it
00:38:06well he's turned to Algenthaler but Algenthaler in the end gets it back successfully to his goalkeeper
00:38:15well actually for me I think this is the best we've played since we've been out in Italy
00:38:18it's been a tremendous bright start that little run of Platt is there he cut them to ribbons with the
00:38:23run
00:38:23and they would they had to defend very very well just to prevent anything happening
00:38:26in the meantime it's Berthold as the West Germans now come forward
00:38:29Hessler being watched by Terry Butcher
00:38:33sidesteps Butcher once and then does it again
00:38:35there's the shot it could deflects on the defender
00:38:37and just wide of the goal there for a corner to the West Germans
00:38:42well Hessler showing us some of his wares there
00:38:45twice turning Terry Butcher
00:38:50and Bremer will take the corner
00:38:53there he is turning Butcher for the second time
00:38:55and the deflection probably just coming off Stuart Pearce and just beyond Shilton for the corner to West Germany
00:39:02Wolder in there Berthold in there Klinsmann a good header of the ball
00:39:06Buchwald up from the back
00:39:07but Buchwald didn't get a touch on it because Butcher was way ahead of him
00:39:13here's Hessler again the man who caused the problems a moment ago
00:39:20Matthäus spraying it wide this time to Bremer
00:39:25into Klinsmann and Wolder's after it
00:39:30I think you saw there very much of a German trait as well
00:39:33both Klinsmann when he laid the ball off and Wolder when he nearly got to the ball
00:39:36both went very very dangerously to ground
00:39:39they have got this habit or infuriating habit for me
00:39:42of trying to buy situations just outside the penalty area
00:39:49Parker for England
00:39:55to Wolder
00:39:58Parker stopped that time by Bremer then Parker had the last word
00:40:01no the last word came from the referee who's given the free kick to the West Germans
00:40:07several players tonight
00:40:09treading really on red-hot coals with one booking
00:40:12another one tonight means of course they would miss the final
00:40:16McMahon, Beardsley, Pearce and Gascoigne for England
00:40:20Berthold, Matthäus and Klinsmann for the West Germans
00:40:23they cannot afford to step out of line even once
00:40:28but battling well
00:40:29losing it though to Argental
00:40:31and the striker still sweep has come forward
00:40:33Matthäus almost got on the end of it
00:40:34but Barker was in very neatly indeed for England
00:40:42it's Pearce
00:40:46who's had a good World Cup for Stuart Pearce
00:40:48but that pass not quite getting to Gary Lineker
00:40:52this is Parker
00:40:55Waddle
00:40:57Parker
00:41:00Butcher to Gascoigne
00:41:02that's not a bad ball forward to Waddle
00:41:04Waddle in one of those advanced positions
00:41:07and we hope we see a lot more of that tonight
00:41:11Parker to throw
00:41:22Roze
00:41:22Waddle
00:41:22Waddle
00:41:24Waddle
00:41:24going ground-brainer
00:41:25now what about the cross
00:41:26Lineker can't quite get to it
00:41:27the clap couldn't quite get to it
00:41:29didn't quite reach Lineker
00:41:30and Matthäus hooks it away for the West Germans
00:41:33Butcher's header
00:41:34got enough purchase on it to find Gascoigne
00:41:36Gascoigne.
00:41:48England having shown great stickability in their matches so far,
00:41:52without showing really their true form.
00:41:55The indestructible English, the Italian papers were calling them today.
00:41:58But tonight, so far at any rate, showing just a little bit of style
00:42:01to go with that stickability.
00:42:03But Matthäus.
00:42:06Now Klinsmann.
00:42:07Vollers off on the break.
00:42:11Then Wright chooses his moment to perfection,
00:42:15takes it away from Hessler.
00:42:18Got Pearce available.
00:42:21I think that's the important thing with Klinsmann.
00:42:23Wright was brilliant there.
00:42:24You don't dive in at him, let him make the first move.
00:42:27I think if you dive in at Klinsmann, he'll pick you off.
00:42:29But if you make him make the first move,
00:42:31you've got a fair, better than even winning chance of winning it.
00:42:34Köhler.
00:42:34To Klinsmann.
00:42:36Köhler.
00:42:36Follows up front.
00:42:38Heardhold on the right here.
00:42:39And away on the far side is Klinsmann.
00:42:43And just for a moment, the English defence gave him far too much space.
00:42:48A little warning sign there, Ron.
00:42:50Yes, that's the problem.
00:42:51I mean, if you're playing man-to-man marking, a rigid man-to-man marking,
00:42:54which we look as if we're going to do,
00:42:55it's so important that you stick to your responsibilities.
00:42:58Mark Wright got involved in the earlier play.
00:43:00Klinsmann left him on a run.
00:43:01All of a sudden, Mark Wright was left on one side of the field,
00:43:03the opposite side of the field to Klinsmann.
00:43:05It is very much a rigid discipline if you're going to be the marker.
00:43:09Lineker to Beardsley.
00:43:09Nice touch.
00:43:10Now, can Gary Lineker get a shot in here?
00:43:12Could David Platt also?
00:43:14That's not a bad ball for Pearce.
00:43:17Crossed in once more,
00:43:18and Lineker almost getting on the end of it.
00:43:21And this really is a good start for England.
00:43:23Sixteen minutes of the game gone.
00:43:26Still 0-0.
00:43:27What is encouraging as well, Brian?
00:43:28They look so suspect at the back.
00:43:30This is brilliant interplay.
00:43:32We beat the sweeper system.
00:43:34Gary Lineker's nearly done what he's good at,
00:43:35getting first to the ball in the box.
00:43:37Butcher at the near post.
00:43:39Lineker just behind him, Platt just behind it,
00:43:41but not the best of corners that time from Peter Beardsley.
00:43:44He holds his hand up and realises.
00:43:47And it'll be a throw to England.
00:43:59For all that, the West German record in these championships
00:44:02have been very good indeed.
00:44:03Beacon, Yugoslavia 4-1,
00:44:05the United Arab Emirates 5-1,
00:44:07then a 1-1 against Colombia.
00:44:08They beat Holland in the second phase game,
00:44:10and then the Czechs in the quarter-final.
00:44:12They scored 13 goals, conceded only four.
00:44:17Pearce with a long throw.
00:44:18Butcher trying to get in there and make something of it.
00:44:22Pearce up again with a header.
00:44:23Butcher staying in there.
00:44:27Suddenly there are
00:44:29forwards springing forward.
00:44:32Walker kept his head well,
00:44:34gets it back quite comfortably to Peter Shilton.
00:44:53West German throw.
00:45:00Now, Klaus Argenthaler.
00:45:03To Jurgen Kohler for the West Germans.
00:45:06Argenthaler again.
00:45:07Regular goal scorer for Bayern Munich,
00:45:10but he's never scored a goal for his country.
00:45:13For a moment, as though he might have fancied a shot then,
00:45:16but in the end tried the little pass through to Völler.
00:45:19England defending well.
00:45:22Gascoigne.
00:45:24To Platt.
00:45:27Good ball there to Lineker.
00:45:29Inch perfect there for Gary Lineker.
00:45:32Waddell's made a terrific break as well.
00:45:36Waddell twisting, turning.
00:45:38Eventually finds Lineker.
00:45:41And Lineker gets his cross in.
00:45:44Paul Parker on the far side up with a header.
00:45:46Goal kick.
00:45:51Well, one or two of the German players
00:45:53have been fairly dismissive over the last couple of days.
00:45:55Talking about England's style being old fashioned
00:45:58and a bit out of date.
00:46:00And not really playing the modern game,
00:46:03but they've had one or two owners to think on those words
00:46:06in the opening 19 minutes.
00:46:14Olef Thorn to Thomas Berthold.
00:46:17Thorn again.
00:46:20To Völler.
00:46:21Thorn.
00:46:23Klinsmann.
00:46:24No foul.
00:46:26Yes point.
00:46:28Yes.
00:46:31He could just flicking it on, but there's no support up there for him.
00:46:36And Algenthaler can bring it forward again.
00:46:41Andy Bremer.
00:46:45To Berthold.
00:46:48Oh, there's a slip there.
00:46:49Berthold might care to go all the way.
00:46:51It was Gascoigne who slipped disastrously there.
00:46:53Bremer playing it in once more.
00:46:55Walker just getting a touch on that one.
00:46:59And a throw to the West Germans.
00:47:03Olef Thorn with it.
00:47:0620 minutes of the game gone in this first half.
00:47:09Still 0-0.
00:47:11Esler to Tone.
00:47:16And a corner for the West Germans.
00:47:19It came off Stuart Pearce.
00:47:24And Mateus will take it.
00:47:34Said to be 10,000 English fans in the stadium.
00:47:3740,000 from West Germany.
00:47:41Now for Mateus.
00:47:45Walker got it away.
00:47:47Hesler to Bremer.
00:47:49Good left foot on him.
00:47:51The way we make.
00:47:53We make.
00:47:53We make.
00:47:54Right control to Vola.
00:47:56Slip again there by Stuart Pearce.
00:48:00And a hand ball and a free kick.
00:48:05Jimmy Greaves in London.
00:48:06Quite a bright start then by the men in white.
00:48:08Oh Brian, this is a magnificent start.
00:48:10This is the best start that we have had in this World Cup Finals by a long way.
00:48:16And what we've just got to do is keep plugging away.
00:48:20And keep having the faith in ourselves that we've obviously got.
00:48:24And just be patient.
00:48:26Don't let's give anything away.
00:48:28Let's keep it to either back.
00:48:30Just let's keep playing the way we're playing.
00:48:32Because I think we've got them looking very shaky indeed.
00:48:36But here come the West Germans now.
00:48:39It's Tone making a tremendous break.
00:48:41Klinsmann outside him.
00:48:44Tone again.
00:48:47And a goal kick.
00:48:51Yes, it's the best form England that was shown certainly in this World Cup 90.
00:48:56And it was curious really Ron Atkinson that the Argentines who Argentinians who've been lumbering along and somehow staying in
00:49:04goodness knows how in the tournament.
00:49:06They in fact in the semi-final put on a performance that was far better than anything they'd shown before
00:49:10to beat the Italians last night.
00:49:11That's right. I think there's many of the teams that are much more much knows.
00:49:15We've stuck at it.
00:49:16You used a good word there.
00:49:17Stickability earlier on.
00:49:18But we've always felt, haven't we, that England have a performance in them.
00:49:21Tonight hopefully this will be that performance.
00:49:25Berthold who was injured in the clash with Stuart Pearce.
00:49:30Certainly the encouraging signs there are like Peter Bersley's had a nightmare on the trip.
00:49:33Now all of a sudden he's looking to be bright and zestful.
00:49:36The runs he, Lineker and David Platt are making down the sides of their centre-backs.
00:49:40Give you hope every time that there's something at the end of it.
00:49:45It's Bremer.
00:49:47To Algenthaler.
00:49:52Troubles here as Mateus brings it forwards.
00:49:57It was Hassler.
00:49:58And now here's Waddle.
00:50:02To Lennikov.
00:50:06Stop by Bremer.
00:50:07No foul.
00:50:08Play on, said the referee.
00:50:09There's a lot of movement in this game now.
00:50:11A lot of good movement thanks to a lot of sensible refereeing.
00:50:14Now this is Mateus.
00:50:17The Hassler.
00:50:18Flicked on there to Bremer.
00:50:20Beardsley getting in.
00:50:21That's a characteristic move of Beardsley.
00:50:23Getting in there, just nicking the ball away.
00:50:26Parker playing it forward to Gascoigne.
00:50:27Giving Waddle very little chance actually.
00:50:30But there was a foul.
00:50:31And a free kick to England.
00:50:40It's Butcher.
00:50:44Waddle.
00:51:07For that.
00:51:15Offence
00:51:20Curled in there towards right
00:51:21Who nearly got a touch on it
00:51:24Gascoigne hit powerfully there
00:51:25Into the arms
00:51:28Of the German goalkeeper
00:51:33Fine, that's encouraging as well
00:51:35The England bench must be pretty confident
00:51:37That's another good effort from Gascoigne
00:51:39Good to see midfield players backing up outside the box
00:51:42But the England bench must be very
00:51:44Very happy with Mark Wright
00:51:46The very fact that he's been sent up for every second
00:51:49Doesn't look as if they're too concerned
00:51:50About him splitting his head again, Brian
00:51:53Well, here's Hesler
00:51:55Black was at him
00:51:57Algentala for the West Germans
00:52:03And Butcher can shepherd that one back quite comfortably
00:52:06To Peter Schiltern
00:52:18Yes, lovely ball
00:52:20Hit with the outside of the boot
00:52:21And Gascoigne read it perfectly
00:52:23Will that go for the corner
00:52:25And I think there was a foul by Gascoigne
00:52:28Or was it by Buchwald
00:52:29No, it's given England's way
00:52:32I think he's good at that young Gascoigne
00:52:33Getting people round the sides of the box
00:52:35And if he can't beat them
00:52:36He's got that Klinsmann-like habit
00:52:38Of just being able to run into a defender
00:52:40Watch this
00:52:41He's made sure he's collided with the defender
00:52:43He's bought a free kick there
00:52:44But he does it quite well to be fair to the kid
00:52:47Well, let's see what he can do with the free kick
00:52:48Now, Gascoigne with it
00:52:49Butcher's in there
00:52:51Plats in there
00:52:52Right with a plaster over his eyes
00:52:53In there
00:52:57Gascoigne's free kick
00:52:58Floated there
00:53:00And
00:53:01Ilgner gathering it
00:53:03High above his head
00:53:04But there was an offside
00:53:05It's a free kick to the West Germans
00:53:20Aragantala
00:53:20There's Beardsley after him again
00:53:22And after him again
00:53:23And still Beardsley goes
00:53:24Just nicks the ball away from him
00:53:26But it goes again to the West Germans
00:53:27Matthias now
00:53:28Spreading it wide
00:53:30Once more to Bremer
00:53:33A little space here for Hestos
00:53:35Treads on the ball
00:53:35And Butcher was in in an instant
00:53:37And Lineker pulled away
00:53:39Over on the left-hand side
00:53:40Gascoigne now picking it up
00:53:44Foul again on Gascoigne
00:53:45That time by Tone
00:53:46And another free kick to England
00:53:5027 minutes gone
00:53:52England are quitting themselves well
00:53:54But it's still scoreless
00:53:56Here in Turin
00:53:57In this World Cup semi-final
00:53:58Paul Parker for England
00:54:00On the far side
00:54:00Cut out easily though
00:54:01By Bremer this time
00:54:02Tries to get it forward
00:54:03Walker there
00:54:04Again quick to respond
00:54:06And getting in ahead of
00:54:08Klinsmann
00:54:14Walker again getting the touch
00:54:15Klinsmann trying to get away
00:54:16Trying to bring
00:54:17Voller into the play
00:54:18Here's Klinsmann
00:54:21And now Fairtold
00:54:25Charged down beautifully
00:54:26By Pearce
00:54:27And it'll come for Beardsley
00:54:29Now Guntala's at his back
00:54:32Played in for
00:54:33Platt
00:54:36Gascoigne
00:54:36And away goes Platt
00:54:39He's only got Lineker up
00:54:40Although Waddle's making a great break
00:54:41As well as with David Platt
00:54:43He might want to go all the way
00:54:44In the end he tried just too much
00:54:46A look of disappointment
00:54:48On the face of Chris Waddle
00:54:49Who'd made such a break for him
00:54:50In actual fact Brian
00:54:52I think Chris Waddle
00:54:53Made a bad run there
00:54:53He actually took the space
00:54:54That Platt he wanted
00:54:55I think it'd have been better
00:54:57Running wider
00:54:57And giving Platt more options
00:55:00Matthäus
00:55:01For West Germany
00:55:02Sorry Ron
00:55:02He tightened it down very much
00:55:04I mean David Platt
00:55:04Would have liked the option
00:55:05To have either had a go
00:55:06At the last man
00:55:07Or indeed to have joined up
00:55:09With Waddle
00:55:09But Waddle took the space there
00:55:11But encouraging to see
00:55:12Waddle at least run forward
00:55:15Algenthal
00:55:17In the end it came to Nuffel
00:55:21Brookwald
00:55:22The big defender right forward
00:55:23Bringing Berthold into the play
00:55:25Klinsmann and Waddle
00:55:26Waiting in the middle
00:55:26And Ton's in there too
00:55:28And it was
00:55:30Poor work again by the West Germans
00:55:32As Gascoigne takes it up again
00:55:33For England
00:55:35Backed up by Beardsley
00:55:37A little chip by him
00:55:38Finding Gascoigne again
00:55:39Beardsley's gone on his run
00:55:42And Gascoigne tried too much
00:55:44And was unable to put it anywhere
00:55:47Other than to Buchwald
00:55:49Here's Matthäus
00:55:53Esla
00:55:55Bremer
00:56:00Agenthaler to Köhler
00:56:04Buchwald
00:56:11Manage has made a brave decision
00:56:13You would think
00:56:13Bearing in mind
00:56:15We've talked about Matthäus
00:56:17Oh here's Waddle away
00:56:18Schiltern off his line
00:56:20Oh Waddle still there
00:56:22Terrific work again by Gascoigne
00:56:24That really saved England's bacon
00:56:26Because Waddle had turned
00:56:27And Schiltern was out of his goal
00:56:29And the cross had gone through
00:56:31Goodness knows what Klinsmann
00:56:32Would have done to it
00:56:33But Gascoigne did some
00:56:34Terrific defending there
00:56:35For England
00:56:37Rudy Boller again
00:56:38Cross coming in towards Klinsmann
00:56:40Who's usually good in the air
00:56:41But beaten that time
00:56:42Parker
00:56:43Completing the clearance
00:56:46Now Bremer
00:56:49Spell of pressure here
00:56:49From the West Germans
00:56:51Agenthaler
00:56:53Long range shot
00:56:54Goal kick to England
00:56:55He's been doing that
00:56:56A fair amount
00:56:56As he's stepping through
00:56:57And you just wondered
00:56:58When he was going to
00:56:59Unleash one of those
00:57:00I think if you remember
00:57:01Games against Glasgow Rangers
00:57:03You've seen him do it
00:57:04Once or twice
00:57:04We've hit miracle goals
00:57:06But he's allowing
00:57:07To come through us now
00:57:08That could be
00:57:09That's a great ball
00:57:10Through there
00:57:10I think Peter Schilt
00:57:11Was a little bit frightened
00:57:12Of knocking him down
00:57:13There in the box
00:57:14You know
00:57:15Gamble to try and push him
00:57:16Away from
00:57:19Goal
00:57:20Beartold
00:57:21Esther
00:57:22Just to go back
00:57:23To that earlier point
00:57:24It is a brave decision
00:57:26I think by
00:57:26Bobby Robson
00:57:28Not to
00:57:28Not to put someone
00:57:30In marking
00:57:30Matthias
00:57:31We generally reckon
00:57:32To be the best
00:57:33Midfield player
00:57:34In the tournament
00:57:34And yet the nearest
00:57:36Marker he's had
00:57:36In most occasions
00:57:37Has been in fact
00:57:38Chris Wadden
00:57:39Half an hour gone
00:57:40Still 0-0
00:57:45To the goal
00:57:46Coming forward
00:57:46Braymond
00:57:48To
00:57:50Downside of the boot
00:57:51They're trying to get
00:57:52Klinsman away
00:57:53Bright covered it well
00:57:54For England
00:57:58West German is through
00:58:00Braymond will take it
00:58:12On to the left foot
00:58:13He's always more comfortable
00:58:14With that
00:58:14Walker gets it away
00:58:17Beardsley chasing
00:58:19And doing well
00:58:20Lineker loves playing up front
00:58:21With Beardsley
00:58:22And at the moment
00:58:22This is an excellent
00:58:23Combination
00:58:24Now can Beardsley
00:58:25Finish it off
00:58:26Well he's picked up
00:58:27Waddle here
00:58:31Outside of the boot
00:58:32Lineker's
00:58:33Hello
00:58:33Platt
00:58:34Couldn't get on the end
00:58:35Of it
00:58:35Pierce
00:58:36A blockbuster
00:58:36Possibly
00:58:38And in the end
00:58:39On to his
00:58:40Less favoured foot
00:58:42And a goal kick
00:58:43But again
00:58:44The Germans slow
00:58:45To
00:58:46Come and mark
00:58:47Them in there
00:58:48Yeah and I think
00:58:48Peter Beardsley's
00:58:49Made a hell of a difference
00:58:50This is Peter Beardsley
00:58:51Playing tonight
00:58:52It's not
00:58:53Alright we'll see
00:58:54Waddle
00:58:54Good ball in from Waddle
00:58:55Lineker's very unlucky
00:58:56To miss that
00:58:57As indeed is
00:58:57Platt on the second ball
00:58:59Then we see
00:59:01We'll see Pierce
00:59:02Just not quite
00:59:03Make a good contact
00:59:04Off his right side
00:59:05But the encouraging thing
00:59:06Is that the runs
00:59:07The two strikers are making
00:59:08Particularly Peter Beardsley
00:59:10Who's had a
00:59:10As I say
00:59:11Hasn't had the best of times
00:59:12But today looks to have
00:59:13All his zip about him
00:59:14Nice ball there
00:59:15By Hessler
00:59:17Froller
00:59:18Pursued again by Walker
00:59:20He's not giving him
00:59:20A moment's piece
00:59:21And look
00:59:22That's Hussler
00:59:23And Froller
00:59:23Into a mistake
00:59:24He's hobbled off
00:59:25With an injury
00:59:25The game will go on
00:59:26He's off the field of play
00:59:28And you can see
00:59:29The referee there
00:59:29Indicating to the
00:59:31West German physios
00:59:32You've got to come
00:59:32Round the back of the goal
00:59:33If you want to attend
00:59:34Quite right
00:59:41We're waiting for the
00:59:44Ball to return
00:59:45And the Germans are taking
00:59:46As much time as they can
00:59:47They obviously want to try
00:59:48And get
00:59:50Their man back on the field
00:59:52Again
00:59:58It's with
01:00:19And it comes clear to Klinzman
01:00:28And it comes clear to Klinzman
01:00:30Froller
01:00:30Froller still getting treatment
01:00:31On the far side
01:00:32It breaks down the game
01:00:32But this time
01:00:33It's
01:00:37Actually the whistle had gone
01:00:38But it was a moment of
01:00:40Wonderful excitement there
01:00:41Chris Waddle letting fly
01:00:43From something like
01:00:4435 yards
01:00:45That Badu Ildner
01:00:46Backpedalling
01:00:47Furiously
01:00:48And just getting
01:00:49A hand to it
01:00:50But the whistle had gone
01:00:52What a lovely
01:00:53Clean strike there
01:00:55By the England
01:00:56England player
01:00:57Chris Waddle
01:01:00And back goes the goalkeeper
01:01:02Just flicking it onto
01:01:03The bar and over
01:01:04But the whistle had gone
01:01:05It would have counted
01:01:05For nothing
01:01:06And Platt's conceding
01:01:08Another free kick
01:01:09As he goes into
01:01:10The back of Hessler
01:01:13Hessler will take
01:01:14The free kick
01:01:15To Bremer
01:01:17Boller still getting
01:01:18Treatment on the
01:01:20Far side of the ground
01:01:24They're told
01:01:26And the foul there
01:01:27By Pearce
01:01:28On Berthold
01:01:29Will give the West
01:01:30Germans a free kick
01:01:32Let's go back to
01:01:33London again
01:01:33For a quick word
01:01:34With Geoff Hurst
01:01:37It's amazing really
01:01:38Brian
01:01:38What a great start
01:01:39You had to dream
01:01:39A start for a
01:01:40World Cup semi-final
01:01:41This is it
01:01:43Tactically it's great
01:01:43To see Chris Waddle
01:01:44Now in the last
01:01:45Third of the field
01:01:46Doing what he
01:01:46Should be doing
01:01:47And at the back
01:01:48The picking up
01:01:50The marking
01:01:50Is a lot better
01:01:51Than it has been
01:01:51With the leggy
01:01:52Mark Wright
01:01:53Along with Klinsman
01:01:54And Desmond
01:01:55All-Cruz
01:01:55Quick and nippy
01:01:56Along with Vuller
01:01:57And leaving
01:01:57Butch's spare
01:01:58And that's really
01:01:59A masterful
01:02:01Tactical switch
01:02:01For me
01:02:02I mean we're
01:02:03Curling balls
01:02:03To front people
01:02:04Everybody's doing
01:02:05Exactly what they
01:02:05Should be doing
01:02:06It's a marvellous
01:02:06Marvellous start
01:02:08Well but two
01:02:09Germans now off the field
01:02:10Getting treatment
01:02:10They're down to nine men
01:02:12And really the referee
01:02:13Yeah he's being
01:02:14Quite severe and strong
01:02:15About it saying
01:02:15The game will go on
01:02:16So Matthäus
01:02:17The West German captain
01:02:19Will have to gather
01:02:20His beleaguered forces
01:02:21Around him
01:02:22Vuller is almost
01:02:23Back onto the field
01:02:24And I'm sure
01:02:24They will hold up
01:02:25The free kick
01:02:26Until Bertolt
01:02:26Does get back on
01:02:34Looks concerned
01:02:35But here's Matthäus
01:02:38And Wright
01:02:39With a brave header away
01:02:43Here's Lineker
01:02:45Parker
01:02:47As Jeff Hurst
01:02:48Was saying
01:02:48It's good to see
01:02:49Waddle
01:02:49In these forward positions
01:02:52As opposed to
01:02:54So much negative play
01:02:55That we saw from him
01:02:56Really
01:02:56For so long
01:02:57Against the Cameroon
01:02:58Of course I'm sure
01:02:59That Jeff would appreciate
01:03:00That strikers working
01:03:01Well together
01:03:02And Lineker and Beardsley
01:03:03At the moment
01:03:03Seem to be very happy
01:03:04In each other's company
01:03:08Waddle with a long
01:03:09Long ball
01:03:09When it reached Stuart Pearce
01:03:12The Germans get it away
01:03:13To Thomas Bertolt
01:03:16Forward to Klinsmann
01:03:19Tries to
01:03:20Dummy Walker
01:03:21Walker
01:03:22Pushing him away
01:03:24And the free kick
01:03:31In actual fact
01:03:33Just a step over
01:03:34Walk a little bit
01:03:35Too close
01:03:35Just the threat
01:03:36Of Klinsmann's pace
01:03:37Our defenders seem to be
01:03:39Having more of a problem
01:03:40In the last few minutes
01:03:41Since Waller's gone off
01:03:42They're not quite sure
01:03:43Now who they've got
01:03:43To Mark
01:03:44Where's before
01:03:45It was all spelt out
01:03:46For them
01:03:47Well there's Waller
01:03:48Still getting treatment
01:03:48Still some way
01:03:49It seems from getting
01:03:50Back onto the field
01:03:51And Matthäus
01:03:53The West German skipper
01:03:53With the free kick
01:03:55Looking towards
01:03:56Buchwald
01:03:57Who's in there
01:03:57Parker just getting
01:03:58A little touch
01:03:59On that ball
01:04:00To get it into touch
01:04:02And Olof Thorn
01:04:04With the throw
01:04:04For the West Germans
01:04:06Back to Brink
01:04:15Klinsmann
01:04:16Wait wide for Gertel
01:04:20That looks very much
01:04:21As if Waller may not
01:04:22Be coming on
01:04:23Actually
01:04:23I notice that
01:04:24They've just handed in
01:04:24Their registration
01:04:26To the FIFA official
01:04:29Here's Hessler
01:04:33Turn
01:04:34Trying something
01:04:35From the range
01:04:36Shelton
01:04:36A good save
01:04:37That bounce
01:04:38Just awkwardly
01:04:39In front of him
01:04:39And he spread himself
01:04:41Beautifully
01:04:42And gathered it
01:04:43In the end
01:04:44Quite comfortably
01:04:47It's now
01:04:48With Stuart Pearce
01:04:50Forward to
01:04:50Piersley
01:04:51A little turn
01:04:52By him
01:04:52And a clear
01:04:52Obstruction there
01:04:53By Buchwald
01:04:55Over three kicks
01:04:55A week
01:04:59As Ron was saying
01:05:00It looks as though
01:05:00Riedler
01:05:01Will be coming on
01:05:02And indeed
01:05:03That's the end
01:05:04Of it for
01:05:04Rudy Vela
01:05:15So that was the
01:05:16Partnership
01:05:16That were in
01:05:17Against
01:05:18The Czechs
01:05:18In the quarterfinals
01:05:19When Vela
01:05:20Was suspended
01:05:22In the meantime
01:05:23It's swallowed
01:05:24With the free kick
01:05:25For England
01:05:27Bramer getting it away
01:05:34Butcher
01:05:35To Parker
01:05:37Played in again
01:05:38For Gascoigne
01:05:43Offside against Parker
01:05:44Free kick
01:05:44To the West Jones
01:05:48About six minutes
01:05:49Of the first half left
01:05:52This fella
01:05:53Is helped
01:05:54Away
01:06:06Agantala to
01:06:11Köhler
01:06:12Spook
01:06:13Vowl
01:06:16To Bremer
01:06:19To Agantala
01:06:19To Buchtwald
01:06:24And then
01:06:25Agantala
01:06:25Spotting a little
01:06:26Gap
01:06:27Looking to get
01:06:30Well he looked to get
01:06:31Matthias through
01:06:33And Parker brought him
01:06:34Down
01:06:34There was a handshake
01:06:35At the end
01:06:35But a free kick
01:06:36To the West Germans
01:06:38But he's a threat
01:06:39When he steps in
01:06:40Is Neil
01:06:40Agantala
01:06:41When he steps in
01:06:41From the back
01:06:42That's a typical
01:06:43Matthias run
01:06:46Somehow
01:06:47Other
01:06:47Lineker
01:06:48And Beardsley
01:06:48Have to try
01:06:49And negate
01:06:50That a little bit
01:06:50When Agantala
01:06:51Steps in
01:06:52Not easy
01:06:52For them
01:06:52I must confess
01:06:54So Matthias
01:06:55Behind this free kick
01:06:56Bramer's in there too
01:07:01Agantala's up there
01:07:02Tong's going in
01:07:03Flinsman's in the wall
01:07:04Having a little
01:07:04Tussle with Stuart
01:07:05Pearce at the moment
01:07:11Five minutes to go
01:07:12To the interval
01:07:13Played there
01:07:14For Agantala
01:07:15And pushed right
01:07:16By Peter Shilton
01:07:22As I say
01:07:23He's never scored
01:07:24For the West Germans
01:07:25But he was nicely
01:07:26On target there
01:07:27And Shilton
01:07:28Was more than equal to
01:07:29It was a favourable
01:07:30Hight for a goalkeeper
01:07:31Of Shilton's standing
01:07:32To be honest
01:07:32But here's a corner
01:07:33Could be more problems
01:07:34Now for England
01:07:35Bramer curling it in
01:07:36And England defending
01:07:38Well again
01:07:38Out as far as Hessler
01:07:41Beardsley coming out
01:07:42To nick it away
01:07:43Into touch
01:07:49Tong getting it in
01:07:52Riedler
01:07:53Not really a shot
01:07:54Pearce getting it away
01:07:56With the right foot
01:07:56Only as far as Agantala
01:07:57All hands to the pump
01:07:58At the moment
01:07:59In this English defence
01:08:01Bramer
01:08:01To Matthias
01:08:03What a ferocious shot
01:08:04But surely not
01:08:05From that range
01:08:06Back again for Agantala
01:08:08He was being closed down
01:08:09Well there Matthias
01:08:10Here's Bukval
01:08:13And now Berthold
01:08:18Agantala
01:08:18Lineker coming back
01:08:19To lend a hand
01:08:24Hessler now
01:08:24On the far side
01:08:28To get the ball
01:08:29Back again
01:08:30Still with Hesler
01:08:32Still with Hessler
01:09:00Hesler
01:09:05Good spell there by the West
01:09:06But for all that
01:09:07The English defence
01:09:08Looking quite comfortable
01:09:10Let's see what they can do here
01:09:14Saved by Schiltern
01:09:15And a free kick
01:09:16Or rather a corner now
01:09:17Which Bramer will take
01:09:24Butcher getting it away
01:09:26Hessler
01:09:29Riedler
01:09:32Hessler again
01:09:34Berthold
01:09:39Agantala swept wide again
01:09:42To Bramer
01:09:45He was looking across
01:09:47To the left hand side
01:09:48Of the field
01:09:48Bramer
01:09:49Usually found a bit of space
01:09:50For himself
01:09:50And he most times
01:09:51Uses it so well
01:09:53It's Olaf
01:09:54Toll
01:09:59Riedler
01:09:59Back to
01:10:00Agantala
01:10:03Berthold
01:10:03Bit of space
01:10:04For him
01:10:04Playing it quickly
01:10:05Into Hessler
01:10:07Everybody
01:10:08Barlinica
01:10:08Back in the English
01:10:09Half of the field
01:10:13Butcher
01:10:14Losing out for a moment
01:10:15There
01:10:15And the German fans
01:10:18Shout for a free kick
01:10:20The referee
01:10:21Well on the spot
01:10:22Waves play on
01:10:24Brian
01:10:25It's funny how games
01:10:25Can change in an instant
01:10:27I think this
01:10:28Game's changing
01:10:28A little bit
01:10:29Since the advent
01:10:30Of Riedler
01:10:30He's come on
01:10:31He's been busy
01:10:32And bright
01:10:32He's never stopped moving
01:10:33Whereas
01:10:34Voh was a little bit static
01:10:35He was easily picked up
01:10:36Now at the moment
01:10:37This lads
01:10:37Chewing all over the front line
01:10:39And all of a sudden
01:10:40They find they've got a target
01:10:41They can play off
01:10:43Essentially now
01:10:44They've started popping the ball
01:10:45About the Germans
01:10:46And basically
01:10:47It's because this guy's there
01:10:48Offering himself all the while
01:10:51Right
01:10:52To Waddle
01:10:55Gascoigne made a good break away
01:10:56On the right hand side
01:10:57There
01:10:57And how well
01:10:58Waddle has found him
01:11:02Gascoigne treading on the ball
01:11:04Bringing
01:11:05Tries to get it away
01:11:06Gascoigne brings him down
01:11:07A free kick to the West Germans
01:11:08But Waddle's hitting
01:11:09Some magnificent long balls
01:11:10Tonight
01:11:11He's playing in a funny area
01:11:13He's not playing as deep
01:11:13Certainly not playing as deep
01:11:14As he did against the Cameroons
01:11:16Playing in a little bit
01:11:17Of advance
01:11:18And that's still not as high
01:11:18Up the field
01:11:19As we would like to see him
01:11:20But more in the role
01:11:21Shall we say
01:11:22Of a creative
01:11:22If player
01:11:25Hook foul to
01:11:26To Algenthala
01:11:31To Brema
01:11:37Matthias
01:11:40Brema
01:11:44Matthias
01:11:46Algenthala
01:11:47Berthold in some space
01:11:49On this side
01:11:49But he plays it short
01:11:50And simply
01:11:51To Buchwald
01:11:55The last few seconds
01:11:56Of the first half
01:11:57Now
01:11:58Bright first half
01:11:59By England
01:12:00But
01:12:01Nothing on the score sheet
01:12:02For them
01:12:03But nothing for the Germans
01:12:04Either
01:12:04Still 0-0
01:12:09And there goes
01:12:10The half-time whistle
01:12:11In this
01:12:12World Cup semi-final
01:12:14Here in Turin
01:12:15The half-time score then
01:12:17England 0
01:12:18West Germany 0
01:12:19Great great start
01:12:21By England
01:12:21But one would have thought
01:12:23Bobby Robson
01:12:23Needing to do a little bit
01:12:24Of reorganising
01:12:25At half-time
01:12:26Defensively Graham
01:12:27Now that
01:12:28Voller's got off
01:12:28And Reidler's come on
01:12:29That's changed the shape
01:12:30Of the Germans
01:12:30Doesn't it
01:12:31Well Reidler's playing
01:12:32That little bit wider
01:12:33Than Voller
01:12:34Wider of Klinsmann
01:12:35And that means
01:12:36That the three lads
01:12:37At the back
01:12:37Have just got to make sure
01:12:38That they're right
01:12:39They're a little bit
01:12:39They haven't quite
01:12:40Got it sorted out
01:12:41Because with Reidler
01:12:42Coming out
01:12:43He's pulling them
01:12:43A little bit wider apart
01:12:44And I think
01:12:45That that will
01:12:46You know
01:12:46Attention will be paid
01:12:48To that
01:12:48In the England dressing room
01:12:49At half-time
01:12:50I think Ron said
01:12:51During the commentary
01:12:52England playing
01:12:53Their best football
01:12:54Controlled football
01:12:55Of this World Cup
01:12:56So far
01:12:56Some great passing movements
01:12:57Oh very much
01:12:58I mean there's one here
01:12:59Starting involving
01:13:00Actually
01:13:01Two of the England
01:13:02Midfield players
01:13:03Gascoigne
01:13:04Who's been absolutely
01:13:06Superb
01:13:06Gary Lineker
01:13:07Looking nice and sharp
01:13:08In there
01:13:09It's a lovely movement
01:13:09Having a look
01:13:10Nice little run
01:13:11To his partner
01:13:12Beardsley
01:13:12They're looking
01:13:13Happy to be together
01:13:14Again
01:13:15And then pushing in
01:13:16Again
01:13:17To Platt
01:13:18Who along with
01:13:19Gascoigne
01:13:19I think have been
01:13:20Outstanding for England
01:13:21In the first half
01:13:22Great ball delivered
01:13:24For Pearcy
01:13:25And Gary unlucky
01:13:26Because there's his strength
01:13:27To come across the face
01:13:28Of the defender
01:13:29This time the German
01:13:30Got his foot in
01:13:31But that was a hallmark
01:13:32Of what England have done
01:13:33Right through
01:13:34Since the start of the game
01:13:36And until the last
01:13:37Five or ten minutes
01:13:38They really have
01:13:39Controlled the game
01:13:40I've been very
01:13:41Very pleased
01:13:41With the midfield
01:13:42I mean for me
01:13:43Chris Waddle
01:13:44Is playing right side
01:13:45Midfield
01:13:45There's three
01:13:46Midfield players
01:13:46In there
01:13:47And they have
01:13:48Dominated in the
01:13:49Middle of the park
01:13:50So far
01:13:51So good
01:13:52With a word of caution
01:13:53Back to you in London
01:13:54Nick
01:13:54Thanks very much Elton
01:13:55Well Geoffrey Hurst
01:13:56I think it's fair to say
01:13:58England playing very well
01:13:59But overall
01:13:59It's a really attractive
01:14:00Game of football
01:14:01Isn't it
01:14:01I think it's a credit
01:14:02To the World Cup so far
01:14:03If they want to look
01:14:03At standards FIFA
01:14:04On how the game
01:14:05Should be played
01:14:05Without the terrible
01:14:06Acting we've seen
01:14:07In previous games
01:14:08That's a great standard
01:14:09To attain
01:14:09But forgetting that
01:14:10I'm only really interested
01:14:11In our bad England
01:14:12And what's amazed me
01:14:13Is the quality of the passing
01:14:15In previous games
01:14:16Our passing
01:14:16Has been absolutely abysmal
01:14:18I don't think we've
01:14:18Strung three passes together
01:14:19In the rest of the tournament
01:14:21The quality
01:14:22From five yards
01:14:22To fifty yards
01:14:23To the night
01:14:23Straightforward passes
01:14:25Curling with the inside
01:14:26And the outside
01:14:26Of their foot
01:14:26Fifty yard balls
01:14:27And waddle
01:14:27It's been absolutely amazing
01:14:29And the understanding
01:14:29They've had between them
01:14:30It's been marvellous
01:14:31Jim you were saying
01:14:32Before the game
01:14:33That you weren't too happy
01:14:34About Beardsley
01:14:34Being in the side
01:14:35Well no
01:14:35I've been
01:14:36I'm a great admirer
01:14:37Of Peter Beardsley
01:14:38In his Liverpool role
01:14:39I have been critical
01:14:40Of his role
01:14:41With England
01:14:42In the past
01:14:42But I've got to
01:14:43Hold my hands up
01:14:44Not to the Germans
01:14:45But to Peter Beardsley
01:14:47And say that
01:14:48He is having
01:14:49A superb game tonight
01:14:50I suppose Bob's had a lot
01:14:52Of faith in him
01:14:53And has given him
01:15:20I think we look quite sound
01:15:21At the back
01:15:22Really when you consider
01:15:23The strengths of the strengths
01:15:24Of the Germans
01:15:25Is these guys up front
01:15:26Peter Shilton
01:15:27Was nearly stranded
01:15:28At one time
01:15:28Yes he was
01:15:29There was a ball
01:15:29Push through
01:15:30But I wouldn't say
01:15:30He was stranded
01:15:31No in fact
01:15:32He did ever so well
01:15:32Here
01:15:33Because when the ball
01:15:34Is
01:15:35Oh this one
01:15:36Is a little bit
01:15:37Dicky
01:15:37The shots dipped
01:15:39Just in front
01:15:40Of him
01:15:40Which he's took well
01:15:41This free kick
01:15:42Squared to the middle
01:15:43He's adjusted his position
01:15:44And come forward
01:15:45And he's made that easy
01:15:46He's made that look easy
01:15:47If it had stood back
01:15:48It would have had to have made
01:15:50A more difficult save
01:15:51So his positioning
01:15:52Was very very sound
01:15:53One man
01:15:54Another man we must mention
01:15:55Chris Waddle
01:15:56He's had a terrific game
01:15:57He's been getting forward
01:15:57Hasn't he
01:15:58Well in the rest of the tournament
01:15:59He's been picking balls
01:16:00Off the back four
01:16:00And playing five yard passes
01:16:02To next to nobody
01:16:03And my grandmother
01:16:03Could have played like that
01:16:04Tonight and I've been advocating
01:16:05For the last few games
01:16:06He's doing his business
01:16:08In the last third of the field
01:16:09And he's getting there
01:16:10And he's running into there
01:16:11He's running players
01:16:12Into that position
01:16:13Then getting in one to one
01:16:14And that's where
01:16:15He's got to do his job
01:16:15It's no good beating people
01:16:16In the back four
01:16:17Our back four
01:16:18It's beating them
01:16:19In the last third of the field
01:16:20And he's been tremendous tonight
01:16:21One thing I must put
01:16:22To both of you actually
01:16:22Whether you'd fancy
01:16:23The penalty situation
01:16:24That we now have these days
01:16:25In the World Cup
01:16:26At my age
01:16:27No thank you very much
01:16:28I couldn't even think about it
01:16:29At my age
01:16:29Yeah well can I just bring back
01:16:30Some grotesque memories
01:16:32For you Geoff
01:16:32Thank you very much
01:16:33I think it's December 71
01:16:35West Ham against Stoke
01:16:36League Cup as it was
01:16:38Hurst taking the penalty
01:16:40Banks the save
01:16:42It was
01:16:42Well Gordon's smiling anyway
01:16:44One of my lucky ones
01:16:45But Banksy brought you down
01:16:46In the first place
01:16:47And should have been sent off
01:16:48For the professional foul
01:16:50Cynical foul actually
01:16:51And then he
01:16:51Then he has the cheek
01:16:53To save it Geoff
01:16:54That was a cracker
01:16:54It was a hell of a save
01:16:55It was one of my lucky ones
01:16:57The first leg at Stoke
01:16:58I had a penalty
01:16:58We won there
01:16:59Exactly the same position
01:17:01I put it within an inch
01:17:02And he went exactly there again
01:17:04And a little monkey
01:17:05Knocked it over
01:17:06Thanks for reminding me
01:17:06Yeah I know you'd appreciate that
01:17:08Just briefly
01:17:08A word of praise
01:17:09For the referee of this game
01:17:10He's refereeing it well
01:17:11Which makes a very pleasant change
01:17:13Right yes
01:17:14I don't think
01:17:14With the game as it's being played
01:17:16In the spirit
01:17:17It doesn't have to
01:17:18It's refereeable
01:17:19Some
01:17:19Yesterday
01:17:19In some cases
01:17:20It wasn't even refereable
01:17:22Yeah
01:17:22But it's an easy game
01:17:23For a referee
01:17:23It's been a beauty
01:17:24It's been a beauty
01:17:24With the sport and the way
01:17:25It's been played
01:17:25We're clearly happy
01:17:26On all fronts
01:17:26Gents for the time being
01:17:27Thanks very much
01:17:28Back to Turin
01:17:28After the break
01:17:40Welcome to Steve Koppel
01:17:41Who's here observing
01:17:42And supporting the team
01:17:43That he used to play for
01:17:44England
01:17:451982 World Cup
01:17:46Now you're a little bit unhappy
01:17:48I know beforehand
01:17:49About the defensive formation
01:17:50Are you happier now?
01:17:52Well I think on the performance
01:17:53They've done terrific
01:17:54The markers have marked
01:17:56Really tightly
01:17:56Except for one or two occasions
01:17:58And I think England
01:17:59They've got to be happy
01:18:00After 45 minutes play
01:18:01You were a little
01:18:03Wanted to point out
01:18:04That we were talking about
01:18:05What was going on
01:18:05In the England dressing room
01:18:06And what was going on
01:18:07In the German dressing room
01:18:08Was probably more interesting
01:18:09As far as you're concerned
01:18:10That would interest me
01:18:11Because I don't think
01:18:12There's any way
01:18:13That Franz Beckenbauer
01:18:14Will be pleased
01:18:14With their first half performance
01:18:16They've never really got off
01:18:18Their game off the ground at all
01:18:20Which is due to England
01:18:21I mean they're taking nothing away
01:18:22But if we were to say
01:18:24Go into the German dressing room now
01:18:26That's what we think
01:18:27Can we put ourselves
01:18:29In his mind
01:18:29Because as much as now
01:18:31Being a physical battle
01:18:32It's got to be a mental battle
01:18:33As well
01:18:33And I would think
01:18:35He's been having
01:18:36Some rather strong words
01:18:37To one or two of his players
01:18:38Steve would you make
01:18:40Any changes tactically
01:18:41Or maybe bring on
01:18:42A substitution
01:18:42Or you're just happy
01:18:43The way it's going
01:18:44Well I'll be
01:18:46Well pleased really
01:18:47With as I say
01:18:47The first half
01:18:48The thing that worried me
01:18:49The last five minutes
01:18:50Is that the Germans
01:18:51Were getting a little bit more
01:18:52With Bremer and Bertholdt
01:18:54And I think that could be a problem
01:18:56In the second half
01:18:57If we can stop that
01:18:58If we can get our fellas
01:18:59Especially Chrissy Waddell
01:19:00Run at a few more people
01:19:02I can only see a good result
01:19:03At the end of this
01:19:05Let's hope so
01:19:05Forty-five minutes to go
01:19:06Unless of course
01:19:07Is extra time
01:19:08And heaven forbid
01:19:08The penalties
01:19:09As we rejoin
01:19:10Ron Atkinson
01:19:11And Brian Moore
01:19:12Thanks a lot Elton
01:19:13As the second half
01:19:15Gets underway
01:19:15The West Germans
01:19:16In those faded green shirts
01:19:18Attacking the goal to the left
01:19:19Yes
01:19:20No doubt
01:19:21Franz Beckenbauer
01:19:22Had plenty to say
01:19:22Apparently he read
01:19:23The riot act
01:19:24After their quarterfinal
01:19:26Against Czechoslovakia
01:19:27And said
01:19:27If we play as badly
01:19:28Against England
01:19:29In the semifinal
01:19:30You can forget
01:19:30All about the final
01:19:35This is Hessler
01:19:38It's looked as though
01:19:39He might cause a few problems
01:19:40Skilful little player
01:19:41They're on the right side
01:19:42Of midfield
01:19:47It's with Bremer
01:19:49And now Buchwald
01:19:53Argentele
01:19:54A long ball forward
01:19:55Looking out to
01:19:56Turn
01:20:01And then comes to Pierce
01:20:04Curl with the jump
01:20:05For the West Germans
01:20:06Gets it to Berthold
01:20:09Matthäus
01:20:11Agentele
01:20:13Going away on the left
01:20:14For him
01:20:16Berthold again
01:20:19Hessler's gone away
01:20:19Outside
01:20:20Has played in nicely
01:20:22Towards Riedler
01:20:23And then for Matthäus
01:20:24England in a spot of trouble
01:20:26Here
01:20:27And in the end
01:20:29It was David Platt
01:20:30Who got it back safely
01:20:31To Peter Schiltern
01:20:35But with Matthäus
01:20:36Getting a little bit of freedom
01:20:37Inside the England box
01:20:39That really was a worrying moment
01:20:40Very much so
01:20:41I think what is happening now
01:20:43That happened at the end of the first half
01:20:45Was Argentele
01:20:46Is getting plenty of free possession
01:20:48He's an excellent player
01:20:49Not in the Beckenbauer class
01:20:51But towards that in possession
01:20:53He sets up play
01:20:54Switches play
01:20:54He brings white people into play
01:20:56And he's also got the ability there
01:20:58So he's just split the defence
01:20:59From 50 yards
01:21:00And almost got Olive Tarny
01:21:02And so
01:21:04Somehow or other
01:21:04I don't think we can allow him
01:21:06As much freedom on the ball
01:21:07Here's Riedler
01:21:09To Hessler
01:21:14He looks really dangerous
01:21:15Trying to get a 1-2 goal
01:21:17But Beardsley had something to say about that
01:21:21Sadly for England
01:21:22Beardsley's forward pass
01:21:23Goes straight through
01:21:24To the West German defence
01:21:25And it's Andy Brenner
01:21:27She had a horrible feeling
01:21:29When I saw the team announced
01:21:31That we were left without
01:21:32Too much resistance
01:21:33In midfield
01:21:33If he came against us
01:21:34I'm hoping that doesn't work out
01:21:37I personally would have liked to see
01:21:39A place for McMahon and Steven
01:21:40In there somewhere
01:21:42Because this sort of
01:21:43The fellow like Hustler on the ball
01:21:45And Mateus
01:21:46People like that
01:21:47They can all get very, very busy
01:21:48And at the moment
01:21:49They're just pinning us back
01:21:50By ball possession
01:21:52Argentele now
01:21:53Here's Totten
01:21:58Trying to get
01:22:00Hessler in
01:22:01Some good defending
01:22:02Good combination there
01:22:04Between Butcher and Walker
01:22:1322 times
01:22:14These two nations have met
01:22:15England with 12 victories
01:22:17The West Germans with 6
01:22:18And 4 drawn
01:22:24Parker
01:22:26Oh, bang it in for Paul Parker
01:22:29Almost getting a shot in
01:22:30With a great surge of pace
01:22:33In that West German penalty area
01:22:35And I thought for one wonderful moment
01:22:37It was going to bounce
01:22:38Superbly for him
01:22:39To hit something on the volley
01:22:40Hard beyond Ildner
01:22:42And it just didn't bounce properly for him
01:22:44Some good defending though
01:22:44By Argentele
01:22:46Yeah, this is
01:22:47This is a great
01:22:48Great perception there
01:22:49From Waddle
01:22:50Young Parker's gone on ahead
01:22:52Ball sits up nicely
01:22:53Not a natural forward
01:22:55Possibility of a corner there
01:22:56I would have guessed as well
01:22:57But not a natural forward
01:22:58I'd love to have seen
01:22:59A natural forward in that situation
01:23:01The lad was in
01:23:03Sort of uncharted territory
01:23:05For him, Brian
01:23:05And probably just started
01:23:07To panic a little bit
01:23:10Berto
01:23:12That would represent
01:23:13Our best chance
01:23:14I don't fancy us
01:23:15If we sit back
01:23:15And try and absorb pressure
01:23:16I think they'll pick us off
01:23:18Like this
01:23:18I think we proved
01:23:19In the early part
01:23:20Of the first half
01:23:21When we went at them
01:23:22Gave them problems
01:23:23At the back
01:23:23Because they're not racy
01:23:24They're not quick
01:23:24At the back
01:23:25And that would represent
01:23:26Our best chance of success
01:23:29Argentele
01:23:30With a bad hold
01:23:31On the far side
01:23:32Successfully finds him
01:23:33Shakes off
01:23:34The tensions
01:23:35Of Peter Beardsley
01:23:38Break is on there
01:23:39With Tone
01:23:43That's out of play
01:23:45Goal kick for England
01:23:48Talking about the
01:23:49Overall record
01:23:50Between these two countries
01:23:52England have won 12
01:23:53Out of 22
01:23:54But it rather disguises
01:23:55The fact that the West
01:23:56Germans in fact
01:23:56Didn't beat us
01:23:57Until 1968
01:23:58And since then
01:23:59They've won 6
01:24:00Out of the last 10
01:24:02England have won only 2
01:24:04So the recent record
01:24:05Certainly favours
01:24:06The West Germans
01:24:07And the last time
01:24:08We met was in 1987
01:24:09In Dusseldorf
01:24:10On that occasion
01:24:11They won 3-1
01:24:16It's Pearce
01:24:19England doing well
01:24:20At the moment
01:24:20But still
01:24:21Not finding a way through
01:24:23Hard though David Platt
01:24:24Was trying there
01:24:27Now Gantala
01:24:27Shut the door
01:24:28Coming forward again
01:24:29A long ball forward
01:24:31By him
01:24:31Trying to get Riedler away
01:24:33But Shilton
01:24:33Read that quickly
01:24:34For England
01:24:41Always remember
01:24:42For a place
01:24:42In the final
01:24:43When this wonderful
01:24:44Jamboree of 1990
01:24:45Comes to an end
01:24:46In just a few days time
01:24:48On Sunday evening
01:24:49In the Olympic Stadium
01:24:51In Rome
01:24:56It's Lee
01:24:58To right
01:25:04The gap suddenly opened up
01:25:05And Wright was prepared
01:25:07To give it a go
01:25:07It came off the defender
01:25:08But
01:25:09Opener there
01:25:11Under the likelihood
01:25:12Of an English corner
01:25:13Berthold
01:25:17That was Beardsley again
01:25:18That was
01:25:19For Beardsley
01:25:20That Liverpool fans
01:25:21Would know so well
01:25:22Just sneaking in there
01:25:23Getting possession
01:25:24Looking for Stuart Pearce
01:25:26A throw to England
01:25:30I've said it before
01:25:31You know
01:25:32In this system
01:25:32Pearce does have a
01:25:33Thankless task
01:25:34He's our only real
01:25:35Left-sided player
01:25:36He's got to cover
01:25:37An awful lot of ground
01:25:38At that
01:25:39Beardsley on the chase
01:25:42Again
01:25:43And wins a corner
01:25:44German's not too happy
01:25:45With that
01:25:48But again
01:25:49A typical piece of Beardsley
01:25:50You know
01:25:51I've always liked
01:25:52Watching Peter Beardsley
01:25:53Play
01:25:53And it's suddenly
01:25:53Defined that he
01:25:54Just was
01:25:55As we've said so often
01:25:55In this World Cup
01:25:56Chasing the game
01:25:57But now
01:25:58He's really on top
01:25:59Of the game
01:25:59And here he is
01:26:00With a corner
01:26:01For England
01:26:01Floated in there
01:26:02Platt trying to get in there
01:26:03I'm surprised
01:26:04That Alginthalo
01:26:05Allowed that to get down
01:26:06To boot level
01:26:07Before
01:26:08Getting it clear
01:26:09And Berthold
01:26:09On the chase for them
01:26:10Trying to get Klinsman away
01:26:12Walker doing a good job
01:26:13Suddenly Tone is in there too
01:26:16This could be a real problem
01:26:18Not for Peter Shelton
01:26:20An excellent piece of goalkeeping
01:26:22As Parker tried to hold off Tone
01:26:24And the 40 year old England goalkeeper
01:26:27Did so well
01:26:31Bottle now
01:26:31Taking up the running for England
01:26:33Gascoigne taking it on from him
01:26:35Trying to go past Alginthalo
01:26:37And away come the Germans again
01:26:39Matthias
01:26:40Getting it back again
01:26:41From Tone
01:26:42A challenge from Peter Beardsley
01:26:43And now Berthold on the far side
01:26:47Hassler outside here
01:26:48And Riedler going through the middle
01:26:49The bad pass
01:26:50They were on the wrong wavelength
01:26:52And England breathe again
01:26:55Braymer struggling
01:27:00Braymer's down on the bench
01:27:01As we have a look again
01:27:01This fine piece of goalkeeping
01:27:03Standing up
01:27:04Big and straight there
01:27:05Peter Shelton
01:27:06Made it a difficult target for Tone
01:27:09And I noticed when the ball came back
01:27:11From Peter Shelton
01:27:12Braymer was calling somebody else in
01:27:17To cover for him
01:27:22Ron Atkinson
01:27:23Yes I mean
01:27:24We just said about Shelton
01:27:25I mean
01:27:26We certainly haven't seen a better keeper
01:27:28In the tournament
01:27:2840 years of age
01:27:29Who knows what he might play to
01:27:30Just having a little look there
01:27:32At Gascoigne
01:27:32Gascoigne after that run
01:27:34Through a minute or two ago
01:27:35Looks as if he's banged his leg
01:27:37A little bit
01:27:37I know he didn't get up too swift
01:27:39And he looks maybe
01:27:41To be hobbling a little bit
01:27:44Well it's only a lively start
01:27:46To this second half
01:27:46As Motha Mateus
01:27:48Swings one forward again
01:27:49Towards Klinsmann
01:27:50Up goes right
01:27:53And Riedler
01:27:54Trying to get one in there
01:27:55Hessler might get a shot on target
01:27:57But here's Gascoigne
01:27:58Winkling the ball away for England
01:28:02Parker away on the right for him
01:28:03Again Waddle's made a good break
01:28:05And he's played it instead to Lineker
01:28:06Who let it run too far
01:28:08Braymer was in there
01:28:08Back on the field again now
01:28:13There's always something
01:28:15A special feel
01:28:16About England-West Germany games
01:28:17And this one's certainly got it here
01:28:18Again in Turin tonight
01:28:21Hessler
01:28:21The worrying thing at the moment
01:28:22Brian
01:28:23It looks
01:28:23Grammar's on about
01:28:24What the Germans were talking about
01:28:25At half time
01:28:26I wonder if Beckenbauer said
01:28:28Hey
01:28:28Get it geared up
01:28:29Let's step up
01:28:30Because at the moment
01:28:31They're going a lot harder
01:28:33And faster than this
01:28:34Hessler with the cross
01:28:35Wright with the clearance
01:28:43Yes occasionally at the back
01:28:44It's all hands to the pump now
01:28:47Backing down the hatches
01:28:49And Mark Wright
01:28:52With a valuable clearance there
01:28:54But it's a corner which Braymer will take for the West Germans
01:28:57Klinsmann's in there
01:29:00Berthold's in there
01:29:00Riedler's in there
01:29:01But so too was David Platt
01:29:03And Lineker suddenly put it back inside the penalty area
01:29:06But Gascoigne got it away
01:29:10Ten minutes of the second half gone
01:29:12Nil-nil
01:29:13In the World Cup semi-final in Turin
01:29:15Between West Germany and England
01:29:19Hessler
01:29:23Argentala
